Bridge Arts Festival’s Stay Home Sofa Series features “Shall We Dance ”With the force of a Mack truck, Cheryl and Christopher Mack, founders of the Bridge Arts Festival in Bayonne, are not allowing the global health crisis to stop delivering arts to the community and they created the “Stay at Home Sofa Series.” “We wanted to continue to provide the community with access to quality arts entertainment,” said Cheryl and added, “Being physically distant doesn’t mean that we must be socially distant. The arts connect us in such a special way, it calms our souls during difficult times and audiences could enjoy arts in their homes without putting their health at risk.” The next production of the Sofa Series is “Shall we Dance” on June 11, 2020 at 6:30 PM written by LIT Council Founder Akin Salawu starring Katya Collazo and Adam Davenport. “Shall We Dance”
tells the story of two nurses celebrating their anniversary virtually while treating COVID patients in two separate NYC hospitals. The piece was developed in LIT Council, a Writers Group for Men of Color at the Tank in midtown Manhattan. “We are thrilled to partner with the LIT Council during this special presentation of the Stay Home Sofa Series,” notes gallery co-owner Christopher Mack, “This performance demonstrates that physical distance will not stop us from socially connecting to high quality arts entertainment.” Bridge Arts Festival Facebook Page will host a livestream of the event as well as on the official festival website https:// bridgeartsfestival.com/.

Cheryl Lee, A Lady on a Mission
RocaBella Vodka – The brand built on love & desire to help its community Cont’d from Cover By Monica Prestia I had the pleasure of speaking with her and finding out about this strong and confident woman who talks about overcoming tragedy by helping others. RVO -Cheryl, please tell us about your husband, Capt. Mark V. Lee, Sr. of the Jersey City Fire Department CL My husband was the captain of the Jersey City Fire Department for 30 years, Engine 10 on Holiday Street. He was very into helping the community there and was a 9/11 first responder. After fighting for his life for many years, On May 9, 2014 he passed away, of 9/11 related illness. The morning the towers were hit my husband had just gotten off a 24-hour shift at the firehouse. My son was a quarterback for his high school in Toms River and Mark always took off the month of September so he could watch our son play football. That morning, my husband jumped on a boat to get to the twin towers at Ground Zero and was there for 17 days. He slept and ate there - he was small in stature and was able to get into areas and walls to help. He was on the bucket lines (brigades). He remembered everything that happened on 9/11 it stayed in his head. The smell stuck with him. It never left him. He went to many, many funerals and masses all the way to Washington DC to honor those we lost. He lost his best friend, Paul Nimbley, the Vice President of Cantor Fitzgerald at WTC
Jersey City Firefighes Capt. Mark Lee, Sr. & son Mark Lee
9/11. Every year, During the month of September, it was very difficult for Mark because of all the memories. He had no regrets and would’ve done the same thing again and given his service. His job was to serve and protect the community and he had no regrets if he had to do it he would’ve done it again. Now, my son is a Jersey City firefighter for nine years now. Mark Lee Jr. is also at Engine 10 in Jersey City where my husband was. RVO-What is the name of the Christmas Drive that your husband founded? Tell us about the Fund. CL The Capt. Mark Lee Christmas Fund. We are heavily involved with the firefighters, the Jersey City community and the local businesses. We wanted to make it and keep it personal because my husband dedicated his life to it. When my husband became very ill, the one thing he asked us to do is to keep this Christmas Drive alive. We started with and (delivered to) 2,300 children when my husband passed in 2014. My son, local businesses, local fire and police departments and I have brought it to
8,000 children and 368 individual families. Mark Lee Jr. and I work with and help by providing toys, food cards, Chuck E Cheese Christmas spectacular, food delivery to individual homes, & more importantly we spend time with these children. My son teaches the kids how to ride the bikes we give them. We work with the Boys & Girls Club. We also have a very hands-on approach with the autistic children in the school system. We delivery the toys and spend the day with them along with Captain Buddy Hayes, his sister my son and myself with the Board of Education. Everything we do is with a hands-on approach. RVO-Do the kids know and expect you every year? CL Yes, they do. We are starting early to prepare and plan because of the pandemic. 100% proceeds go right to the children. Food, Toys, and Clothing. All proceeds! Some families need personal assistance to get services and I help them. It goes beyond those items and I help them personally. Everything is for the children and they need to know that there are good
people out there. RVO-Has helping others helped you – Has this been Cathartic in your journey? CL Oh yes, since I’ve started doing this and we started reaching out to more people I’ve gotten very emotionally attached. By January, I couldn’t move for a month. I’m emotionally drained. When I see these kids and they hug you and the parents hug you and they thank you. When you can call up Shop Rite and get 100 food cards and they say no problem you can have them next week. It means a lot. My son would say so and so doesn’t have a turkey, I tell him please go get them food. When the Pandemic started I delivered 389 meals, 70 reusable face masks that are going to the elderly + 600 pairs of gloves. RVO-Are you also helping the elderly? CL Yes, in Jersey City, Tom’s River nursing homes and Boonton Fireman’s home. RVO-Did you launch RocaBella to assist in your charity work? CL Yes, RocaBella is a proud American brand, RocaBella is a natural flavored vodka that has as its ultimate mission to help fallen first responder families with a hands on approach. Our RocaBella Gives is a national non-profit dedicated to building a solid foundation for children via activities that support education, confidence building and positive growth. The charity members volunteer to work with the community to support local activities such as toy
drives, educational programs and more. RocaBella is a woman who is fierce. She is bold she’s been through so much tragedy and has come out stronger and more confident. I can play in the dirt in the day and dress to the nines at night. I’m a nana I’m 57 years old. I play with my 12 yr old grandson. He thinks I’m the coolest and says “my nana can do everything and is the koolest”. I travel with him and he was very close to my husband. He was almost 5 when he passed and remembers every detail about him. I am the first woman to launch a gluten free, made in America, 3 flavored vodka - All natural and distilled in Florida. From farm to table. RVO-How did u come up with Rocabella Vodka? CL My family recipe. Friends and family would come to all my great parties in Jersey City, and it became the go-to cocktail at all the baby showers. I would make it for my son to bring to parties. I would put it in a white Styrofoam box. This year was 6 years of my husband’s passing and as it came to an end I would make drinks for my son and he said, “Mom these are so good but it’s somebody else’s Vodka”. I used to make teas for my husband and he believed they kept him alive. I have always created drinks. My friend, Sara from Barbados, asked me what I was doing and I told her I was creating. She said “well tell me what you are doing. You are very creative. I need to Cont’d on page 8

Joking around I said “you’re going to have to sign an NDA (nondisclosure agreement). She introduced me to this woman from L2L a marketing company and she listened to my story and asked me why I want to make this Vodka. She asked me my creative ideas and I told her how I admire the strength of celebrities like J LO, Celine Dion and their passion for achieving their goals and I convinced her to take a chance on me and she did. I asked my close friend, Maryanne Woods, wife of Jersey City Captain James Woods who passed away unexpectedly, to partner with me at RocaBella Vodka and join me on this venture. I believe our husbands brought us together. We have so many similarities. Neither one of us has sisters and we became each others right arm. RVO This is a great story. You sound like you have a lot of energy! What do you think your husband would think of you becoming an entrepreneur and launching the RocaBella brand? CL He is so proud of me. He knows I always wanted to. I always wanted to do this but family always came first. I took care of my dad. My father was a captain at Hudson County Jail and when he had a brain stroke I took care of him for 11 years. My mom suffered from a mental illness and I still take care of her.
