SCULPTING IN METAL & WOOD JC Sculptor Philip A. Robinson, Jr. Shows New Work in Brooklyn Exhibit Art on View Sat, Mar. 23 at Carrie Able Gallery, Brooklyn

By Sally Deering Philip A. Robinson Jr’s wood & metal sculptures are larger than life images of women and men, including a gray-bearded Kanye West in a broken rusted chains. Recently on view at the weekend-long Art Fair 14C held at the Hyatt Jersey City at Exchange Place, Robinson’s sculptures were part of the 107 Bowers Gallery’s exhibition which also included local artists Cheryl Gross and Andrea McKenna. If you missed Robinson’s works at Art Fair 14C, his sculpture will be featured at Carrie Able Gallery in Brooklyn beginning Sat, March 23. Currently, one of Robinson’s sculptures can also be seen in the retail men’s shop Lulumon in the newlyopened Hudson Yards complex on Manhattan’s west-side. Large sculptures of swirling metals and carved wood are a big part of Robinson’s artworks. “I love working with my hands,” Robinson says. “My father is an electrician. He was always working with his hands. When I was young, I would make 3D objects for school, so my mother put me into art programs. I went to the Putney School in Vermont in 11th grade. I

school system”, he says. He’s been a resident of Jersey City for the past 8 years, and over the recent March 16th weekend, Robinson exhibited at Art Fair 14C in Jersey City. “I thought the quality of art was really good,” Robinson says, “and the level of Fine Art was really high. Over the weekend, I had conversations with several artists, and I did a lot of networking.”

urator Maria Ross of the non-profit Mariarts promotes the mission “to facilitate young artists’ inclusivity and exposure to different communities”. Ross will be spotlighting her dedication to young artists at THE 3RD ANNUAL HOLI AND ART FESTIVAL at Barrow Mansion in Jersey City. “Holi is a festival they have in South Asian culture,” Curator Maria Ross of Mariart.org says. “It celebrates the coming of spring, light and color. It’s a spiritual and cultural holiday.” THE HOLI AND ART FESTIVAL AT BARROW MANSION will be held on Sat, April 13 from 3-10 pm, and along with the Children’s Art Exhibit, the day-long event will feature performances by the Shehnaaz Dance Academy at 7 pm, and Soprano Tharanga Goonetilleke with pianist Lucas Barkley at 7:30 pm. Along with the free entertainment, light refreshments will be served. “This is the third year we’ve been doing the Holi and Art Festival and the first year for the children’s art exhibit,” Ross says. “We encourage parents of children 5-17 to submit their artwork. It can be in any medium – painting, sculpture, photography,
