Hudson County Community College’s ‘Hudson Scholars’ Program Wins 2023 National Bellwether Award

On Tuesday, February 28, 2023, Hudson County Community College’s (HCCC)

“Hudson Scholars” program was recognized with the 2023 National Bellwether Award. The honor was presented at the 2023 Bellwether College Consortium “Community College Futures Assembly” in San Antonio, Texas.

The nationally acclaimed Bellwether Award recognizes cutting-edge, trendsetting programs that address critical issues facing community colleges through applicable research and the promotion and replication of best practices in Instructional Programs and Services,

Workforce Development, and Planning, Governance and Finance. The Bellwether Award has been compared to football’s Heisman Trophy because it is competitively judged and awarded by respected peers in leadership positions.

Ten Bellwether Program

Finalists from across the United States were selected to compete in each category, and the rigorous selection process included two rounds of judging by peers and academicians in the field. The finalist teams made presentations to a jury of anonymous judges that included community college national association leaders, college leaders, business and technology leaders, and national policy influencers.

Mayor Fulop gives oaths to newest JCPD

OfficersOver 90% represent minority populations in region’s most diverse city 75% of the 777 Officers Hired by Fulop Administration are Minorities due to Impressive Diversity Recruitment

Efforts

Mayor Steven M. Fulop, City Council Members, Public Safety Director James Shea, Police Director Tawana Moody, and Jersey City Police Officers welcomed 15 recruits who recently graduated from the police academy to join New Jersey’s largest municipal Police Department. Notably, 14 of the 15 newest JCPD members represent minority populations.

“With today’s class, we are marking an important milestone as nearly all of the newly sworn police officers are minorities representing Jersey City’s unparalleled diversity. In fact, 14 of the 15 new officers grew up in the very community that they swore to serve when they took today’s oath,” said Mayor Fulop.

The newest JCPD recruits sworn in today include 10 Hispanic officers, 4 females, 1 Egyptian officer, and 1 of Guyanese descent.

drama society presents rent

Cont’d from Cover

The Bayonne High School Drama Society will present Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning rock musical RENT (School Edition). The rock musical that defined a generation, RENT’s themes of love, social justice, and faith still resonate with young people today. The show is directed by former Broadway performer and BHS Musical Theatre teacher Lori Alexander. Following the success of last year’s hit production of The Wiz, the staff and students are excited to bring this iconic rock opera to life on the BHS stage. Alexander states, “similar to the characters in RENT, today’s young adults are emerging from a worldwide health crisis and trying to figure out who they are and what their purpose is. They are coming of age while dealing with social media influences, mental health issues, and a divisive political climate among other things. As they face contemporary issues of the 21st century, our students connect deeply with the show’s message of friendship and hope. They celebrate the mantra ‘No Day But Today.’ “

Based loosely on Puccini’s opera “La Boheme,” RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven impoverished young artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out all while trying to survive in New York’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The show reminds us to measure our

lives with the only thing that truly matters — love.

RENT (School Edition) will be performed in the Alexander X. O’Connor Auditorium at Bayonne High School, 669 Avenue

A, Bayonne, NJ. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Performances are Friday, March 31 at 7pm, Saturday April 1 at 7pm, and Sunday April 2 at 2pm. Tickets can be purchased at bhsdrama.booktix.com starting March 20th. Note: RENT (School Edition) deals with drugs and sexual content. Please be advised that it may not be appropriate for children under 13 years of age.
