Cabaret Sauvignon, All-Female Singing Group blends Voices & Friendships

lena Zazanis, Alex Finger, Amanda Levie, and Amy Elise belt, croon and harmonize songs without any instruments, just a pitch pipe to locate important first notes. They’re known as Cabaret Sauvignon, “a female a cappella ensemble covering tantalizing tunes from torch to top 40.” The four songstresses layer their voices in harmonies that modernize classics like “Bie Mier Bis Du Shoen” by The Andrew Sisters and put a twist on Top 40 Pop hits like Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love”. Cabaret Sauvignon can be seen in their first cabaret performance A MYSTERIOUS A CAPPELLA MURDER CABARET at the 16th annual Midtown International Theatre Festival in Manhattan for two shows, July 30 and August 2. The show is described as a “reality-theatre tale where four female vocalists
meet in fierce competition, surmount their backstage backstabs, form the a cappella group Cabaret Sauvignon, and allegedly murder their manager.” Leading up to their first cabaret show, Cabaret Sauvignon has been performing since they met at Art House Productions in 2013. “We did a workshop,” Amy says. “I heard and saw Elena sing. You know how you gravitate toward someone? I gravitated toward Elena and I wanted to be part of what she was doing.” Amanda and Alex joined the group and they have become a welcome surprise when they give pop-up performances at restaurant and business opening receptions. They perform regularly at Two Boots on Newark Avenue in Jersey City, and recently gave a special performance of the classical piece Also Sprach Zarathustra by Johann Strauss that was used in the film “2001: A Space Odyssey” for the Jersey City

Elena studied music professionally; Amanda sang in choirs at Marymount Manhattan College and the University of Oregon; Amy grew up singing in children’s choirs; and Alex has a strong background in musical theater. “I’m baffled that it works,” Amy says. “We’re all very opinionated, assertive Type ‘A’ personalities.” “We keep each other in check,” Alex adds. They take turns rehearsing in each other’s Jersey City apartment and they all agree that singing together has put their voices and their friendships in sync. They went from working together to becoming friends and now they’re like family, Amy says. OL’ BLUE EYES IS BACK! Cont’d from Cover Sinatra sang in the studio and performed onstage for more than 50 years, recording hundreds of songs, and performing thousands of shows. Jam packed with memorabilia, music and all things Sinatra, this exhibit is both a loving tribute and a peek into the complicated life journey Sinatra took, from small time Hoboken street kid to saloon singer to concert and film star and in his later years, show biz royalty.
The personal mementos Sinatra collected, the home movies that were taken of him with family, photos, correspondence, music, and awards on display shine a warm light on a popular and hard-working performer who juggled a star-studded career with the obligations of family. Along his journey, Sinatra sought new challenges for his talents, from tap dancing with Gene Kelly to dramatic acting with Burt
Lancaster to painting abstracts on canvas a la Wassily Kandinsky. SINATRA: AN AMERICAN ICON is a visual and audio feast for Sinatra fans and those who want to know more about Ol’ Blue Eyes. SINATRA’S HOBOKEN DAYS The exhibit begins in the library’s lobby with several black and white photographs including one taken in 1938 of a young and somewhat bewildered Sinatra at the microphone of the Rustic Cabin in Fort Lee where he worked as a singing waiter for $15 a week. Inside the entrance, several platinum and gold albums he was given are on display including one for selling 1 million copies of “Come Fly with Me” and another for “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning.”
Move on to a display of memorabilia from his early Hoboken days including parents Marty & Dolly Sinatra’s 1913 wedding portrait, a photo from when Marty, a Hoboken firefighter was burned during a fire; and one of the Hoboken saloon Marty O’Brien’s that Sinatra’s parents
Page 6-July 15th -July 31st, 2015 River View Observer
bought in 1920. Instead of naming the saloon Marty Sinatra’s, they gave it an Irish name because back then, Hoboken was divided into neighborhoods according to ethnicity and the bar was in the Irish section of town. Another Sinatra memento: Sinatra’s ID card from when he was a kid living at 841 Garden Street in Hoboken, printed in his own hand.
Ever since Sinatra was a kid, he would sing and accompany himself on the ukulele which is also on display: “While Frank’s primary interest was his voice, he had been playing ukulele since he was a boy,” it states next to the instrument on display. “He wooed his future bride the first time they met, serenading her with a song on the uke.” The exhibit features a timeline of Sinatra’s life in Hoboken; his first marriage that took place in Jersey City and then a timeline of his early singing career where he crooned at the microphone as a soloist fronting Big Bands
A FILM STAR IS BORN Sinatra’s early radio days are on exhibit with rarely heard recordings of broadcasts including Sophie
Tucker’s private recording collection and a special 1945 V.J. Day show with Bob Hope, Meredith Cont’d on page 7

In 1953, Sinatra was cast as Private Angelo Maggio in FROM HERE TO ETERNITY, based on the novel by James Jones. He won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Other films followed, some dramatic THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, and some called on him to be a song-and-dance man. The exhibit features the white dance shoes he and Gene Kelly wore in one of their dance numbers in “TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME.” SING WITH SINATRA In one room of the exhibit there’s a recording booth where a visitor can step inside and watch a video of Sinatra singing “The Theme from New York, New York.” It gets better. Visitors are given a
chance to sing with the Master, just by hitting a button on the Touch Screen. The exhibit reveals a lot about Sinatra’s politics, too, says one visitor. “What I took from the exhibit is that Sinatra was a very complicated man,” Stan Sinberg, a writer and former New Yorker visiting from San Francisco says. “He was a pioneer in race relations. Just look at his TV shows in the 1950s and 60s where he’s singing with Ella Fitzgerald and they’re hugging and touching. This was rare back then. I was also surprised by his paintings. I had no idea he was a visual artist, too.” Sinberg, who’s vacationing in Manhattan for several weeks, says he’s returning for a second look. “There’s so much to see and listen to,” Sinberg says. “I really liked the recording booth where you can sing a duet with Sinatra. And when you play back what you recorded, the “Make It Stop” option was hilarious. I also liked the tuxedo in the glass case. He really was a skinny guy when he was young.” SINATRA’S LATER YEARS
Sinatra expanded his artistic chops when he
picked up a paintbrush and began expressing himself through oils and acrylics on canvas. Several of his paintings – bright abstracts with geometric shapes – are on view. He never sold his paintings, and preferred, instead, to give them away to family and friends – sometimes even fans.
Sinatra won Emmys, Oscars, a Golden Globe and so many more awards and well-deserved accolades during his career. His last official shows were December 1994 in Japan; right before his 79th birthday and his final show was on Feb. 25, 1995. He passed away three years later in Los Angeles on May 14, 1998, at 82. The White House awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985 and in 1998 the Congressional Gold Medal, posthumously. ALWAYS THE SALOON SINGER Sinatra always saw himself as a singer in a saloon, according to his daughter Nancy Sinatra, Jr. “My dad’s roots were in the saloon, and he never forgot that, never lost that,” Nancy Sinatra says. Nobody knew that better than Sinatra, himself. If you wanted to know the real him, all you had to do
was listen. “Just let me sing, baby,” he once said. And so he sang…and we’re still listening. If you go Now through Sept. 4 SINATRA: AN AMERICAN ICON

FIRE & VICE IN Old JERSEY CITY
Seasoned Reporter Pens Novel on 100-Year Old Sabotage Frank “Boss” Hague at Center of Controversy, Again!
Ron Semple, Author of BLACK TOM Terror on the Hudson, worked as a reporter for the Jersey Journal and Hudson Dispatch
By Sally Deering
S
ome reporters seem to have ink in their veins; just the hint of a good tale propels them to find the facts, pinpoint the characters and put it in print. That seems to be the case with Ron Semple, a 5th Generation Jersey Cityite who walked the Jersey City beat for the Hudson Dispatch and Jersey Journal in the 1950s and 60s, Semple wrote news and features and at 27 became the Jersey Journal’s City Editor with a crew of 50 reporters he could send out on a moment’s notice to get a story. More than 50 years later, Semple finds himself once again writing copy about his hometown. In BLACK TOM, Terror on the Hudson (Top-Hat Books, 516 pgs.; $27.95) Semple turns back the calendar to 1916 when German saboteurs destroyed a large railroad munitions depot (Black Tom) on the Jersey City waterfront. The
Frank Hague
explosion killed and injured several night watchmen and caused extensive property damage costing millions of dollars. “What was perplexing about “Black Tom” was that everyone maintained it was an ‘accident’ until the railroad sued Germany in 1924 for damages and years later collected $50 million dollars,” Semple says. “How could that have happened in a big city that was just a grouping of ethnic villages where no secrets were possible?” That’s just a tip of the proverbial iceberg. When the Black Tom explosion occurred, Semple wasn’t even around. Born in 1935, Semple’s dad left Semple and his mother when he was a year-old; his mother went to work in a dime store in Hoboken and Semple’s grandparents took care of him. Semple’s dad had been a reporter at the Jersey Journal and he would come back to visit his son and take him along to the paper’s newsroom
Page 16-July15th -July 31st, 2015 River View Observer
in Journal Square. “I would sit there banging away at a typewriter with two fingers,” Semple says Although his dad introduced him to a city newsroom, Semple says the real influence on his decision to be a journalist came from Fr. Raymond York at St. Peter’s Preparatory School in Jersey City. Semple was trying out for the football team because “that’s how you got dates with girls” and he was lousy at punting the pigskin so Fr. York recruited him to write for the school newspaper. Semple penned a humor column and other stories for the high school reader and after graduation set off to Loyola University in New Orleans to study journalism. He left Loyola to serve
in the U.S. Marines – at the tail end of the Korean War – and after his discharge he returned to Jersey City, attended Saint Peter’s College and took a job as a reporter for the Hudson Dispatch, a morning newspaper headquartered in Union City and distributed throughout Hudson. He left there to be a reporter for the Jersey Journal where, at 27, he was promoted to City Editor. “That’s the job I really loved,” Semple says. “I had all these reporters and I could cover everything I wanted. I had a list of assignments and it would run five pages long. I enjoyed the control; you could tailor what the newspaper was going to be like. In those days, as City Editor you not only did that, you put out the front page. I learned how to read type upside down and backwards.” Semple’s career path takes more twists and turns than the streets of Jersey City. He sailed to West Africa as a crewman on a freighter, traveled extensively in Scotland, Ireland and Sweden, worked as a truck driver, construction
laborer, and the mate on a charter fishing boat. Semple also worked as legislative secretary to a state senator and sold nuts and bolts in a hardware store. These days, Semple lives in Advance, North Carolina with his wife Jane. He was with FEMA for ten years working on hurricane rescues from Katrina to Superstorm Sandy. It was on a visit back to Jersey City to see former colleagues that Semple felt inspired to write about the Black Tom incident. “I came up to Jersey City to visit friends, Bob Gallagher and Bob Waldron (former Jersey Journal reporters) and we went down to Liberty State Park where we could see the gap in the Skyline where the Twin Towers had been,” Semple says. “I saw a historical plaque on the Black Tom Explosion of 1916. I’m a 5th generation Jersey Cityite and City Editor for many years, and I never heard of Black Tom. I started reading about it and finally in 2013, I went to Warren Murphy’s 80th birthday party, and he said why don’t you stop talking about that damn book and write it.” Murphy, a highlyCont’d on page 17
FIRE & VICE IN Old JERSEY CITY Cont’d from page 16 successful author and screenwriter wrote this on Semple’s BLACK TOM book jacket: “... Mr. Semple has managed to combine fact and fiction along with a family saga of a time in our history when it really was all different, so the book is history and epic and exciting and sometimes laugh-aloud funny, as it tells the down-home stories of the overlapping ethnic groups who peopled those cities that long century ago...” Being a book author is another exciting chapter in Semple’s life, he says, and he’s already working on his next book. “I quit newspapers at 52 and spent the next 30 years

in an attempt to break the World Record and win the title. Hoboken’s Guitar Bar has been rocking along the Hudson for years with its All–Stars shows, bringing together Guitar Bar’s staff of great musicians for a rollicking night of music and fun. For the past two summers hundreds of local musicians – both professional and amateur -- joined the All-Stars in an attempt to break the world record. Previous attempts were terrific, but didn’t top Germany which holds the record with 1,802 participants. Guitar Bar now asks all strummers to come join the band. They’re calling on everyone with an acoustic guitar, mandolin, ukulele (or any other acoustic string instrument) to play along with the All-Stars for a performance of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” followed by other easy songs even beginner guitarists can follow including tunes by Chuck Berry and other classics. Whether you’re an experienced musician or just starting out, the Guitar Bar has tutorials on its YouTube page for guitar, mandolin and ukulele that will teach players all the basic chords of the songs. Join their event page on Facebook, connect with other people who’ll be joining the All-Stars, and get all the information needed to learn the chords at: guitarbar.com/worldrecord. Mendoza’s mural, which was unveiled on July 11, is part of the Jersey City Mural Arts Project. “The “Skyway” mural depicts an iconic northern New Jersey roadway that has been indelibly burned into the landscape that makes up the gritty personality of the Garden State.,” Mendoza says. “It links Newark and Jersey City and it serves as a commuter’s road to New York City, and yet, to me this roadway symbolizes a path for greater recognition, resolve, and the resiliency of our community.” To view this photo in color log onto www.riverviewobserver.net
