All this packed into one day to give locals, whether newbies or long-time residents, the opportunity to learn more about this wild and crazy place called Hudson County. Carmela Karnoutsos, Professor Emeritus at New Jersey City University is one of the event planners, along with Robert Foster, Executive Director of the Hoboken Historical Museum. “The History Fair is part of a state-wide initiative to celebrate New Jersey’s heritage and all it brings to people today,” Karnoutsos says. “It’s an opportunity to educate the public about the state, the individual communities, and the people who work in history at the local level. Here in Hudson, we have a number of people who help preserve Hudson County’s history on an ongoing basis.” JERSEY BY THE BOOK Several authors will give talks about their books and New Jersey history. Steve Hart’s talk may be of special interest to fans of the HBO hit series ‘BOARDWALK EMPIRE’. Hart is the author of American Dictators: Frank Hague, Nucky Johnson, and the Perfection of the Urban Political Machine, and will give a talk about the former Jersey City mayor and other colorful

Jerseyians. Hart also wrote The Last Three Miles: Politics, Murder and the Construction of America’s First Superhighway (The New Press, 2007). Joseph G. Bilby, author of 350 Years of New Jersey History, From Stuyvesant to Sandy (with James M. Madden and Harry Ziegler) will share insights about his research of New Jersey. Bilby is Assistant Curator of the New Jersey National Guard and Militia Museum in Sea Girt, and columnist for The Civil War News. Holly Metz of Hoboken will speak about her book Killing the Poormaster: A Saga of Poverty, Corruption, and Murder in the Great Depression (Lawrence Hill Books). Metz has written extensively on legal, cultural, and social issues for the American Bar Association and for publications including The Progressive, Labor History, Metropolis, and The New York Times. Professional dancer and teacher Ayesha Khanna blows the roof off the Grassroots Community Space in Jersey City when she turns on the music and her students take to the dance floor for her one-hour Bollywood Funk dance class. It may be a patriotic song, but when Khanna choreographs it Bollywood Funk-style, it’s a new and energetic presentation. The 12 dancers at a recent Saturday class were learning steps to a routine to the Bollywood song “Indiawale” (the electronic version) by composer Vishal Shekhar – and seemed to be having a blast. Hudson County Community College Celebrates Dedication of New Library Building

Area elected officials to join faculty, staff and administrators attend ceremonies marking the official grand opening of the new, six-story building on the College’s Journal Square campus. On September 29th, Congressman Albio Sires, Hudson County Executive Thomas A. DeGise, and other elected officials and community leaders gathered with the Trustees, students, faculty, staff, and administration of Hudson County Community College (HCCC) for the official dedication of the College’s new Library Building. The ribbon-cutting ceremonies took place inside the sixstory, multifunctional structure, which is located at 71 Sip Avenue on the College’s Journal Square Campus in Jersey City. The 112,000 square-foot building is just steps away from the Journal Square PATH Transit Station. Dr. Glen Gabert, President of HCCC, said the Library Building was designed to serve as a center of knowledge and learn and to promote a sense of com

munity and connectedness for students, faculty, staff, and all who live and work in Hudson County. “This College and this Library Building belong to our

community, and we hope everyone will utilize the resources and enjoy the amenities,” Dr. Gabert said.

“IMAGINED REALITIES”

“IMAGINED REALITIES” is a visually evocative and illuminating exhibition devoted to the recent work of hob’art members Miriam Untoria and Meredeth Turshen. Each artist draws inspiration from her environment to represent her own imagined realities. Although different in approach, their new work evokes a balance of sensibility and emotion, reality and imagination. Miriam Untoria uses acrylic paint, collage, small sculptures, and found objects to create emotional depictions of portraits and imaginary existences in two and three dimensions. Meredeth Turshen is exhibiting new bold, layered, and textured paintings on paper in oil, with traces of pastel and graphite; the compositions evoke energy and movement and radiate light. On October 10, the exhibition “IMAGINED REALITIES” will open at hob’art co-operative gallery, 720 Monroe Street, E208, Hoboken, NJ. Miriam Untoria and Meredeth Turshen will present artwork in the mediums of acrylic, oil paint, pastel, mixed media and assemblages. In addition, during Hoboken’s monthly Gallery Walk on Sunday, October 19, the artists will speak about their technique and processes at 3:30 pm.

Saddle Up for Ribs, Beer and Flat Screen Heaven Smokin’ Barrel Serves Up House-Smoked Texas BBQ and 23 TVs for Sports Fans

By Sally Deering

H

oboken’s 13th street just got a new kid on the block: Smokin’ Barrel Authentic Texas BBQ is the most recent addition to the neighborhood and the place is jumping with locals who like smoked meats and a choice of 50 domestic beers to watch the big game on one of 23 flat screen TVs. The brainchild of a group of business-partners Robert Kakov, Nirav Patel, Richard Gaetor, and Anthony and Danielle Lenardo – Smokin’ Barrel fills a void on Willow Avenue where there’s a dearth of restaurants and local places to hang out with friends and watch a game over some cold brews. There are glass topped-

barrels that serve as bar tables, and if you can’t find a stool at the bar, you can always hitch a ride on one of the leather saddles affixed to a thick coil for a little “Yee-Ha” with your BBQ. “It’s a vision,” Anthony Lenardo says. “We have the only in-house smoker in Hudson County.” Other restaurants in Hudson may serve their version of BBQ, which might be “pouring BBQ sauce on meat that’s already been cooked,” Anthony Lenardo says, but authentic Texas BBQ is a different and slower process. With authentic Texas BBQ, the cook applies a spice rub to the meat and then smokes the meat in a smoker for 10 hours. That’s what they cook ribs, pork and brisket at Smokin’

Partners Robert Kakov, Tony and Danielle Lenardo, Chef Otis Gordon, consultant Marc Bernstein, and Partners Narev Patel and Richard Gaetor enjoy a Sunday afternoon at their new Hoboken restaurant Smokin’ Barrel.

Smokin’ Barrel while Chef Otis ensures orders are going out on a timely basis. “We do brisket the Texas way and Carolina Pork,” Bernstein says. “The Texas way is the smoke and the rub; the Carolina way is a vinegar BBQ you add after you smoke the meat.” Smokin’ Barrel’s menu is a hearty selection of Starters, Wings, Salads, Sandwiches, Burgers, Entrees and Sides and it’s all laid out on one page. Starters include Rib Tips, Smokin’ Barrel Nachos, Short Rib Chili, Catfish Bites, Bacon Wedges, Pulled Pork Slider, Smoked Brisket Slider, Blackened Salmon Slider, and the Slider Sampler. ($7.95-$14.95) There’s one more specialty on the Starters menu: Fried Pickles, slices of kosher-dill pickles battered, deep fried, salted, and absolutely delicious. ($7.95) Salads feature Caesar; Arugula; and Iceberg Wedge ($8.95-$9.95). (Add Grilled or Fried Chicken or Shrimp, Blackened Salmon or Grilled Steak for additional $3.95-$5.95.) Sandwiches and Burger selections are Angus Beef Burger, Turkey Burger, Hickory Smoked Veggie Burger, Smoked Beef Brisket, Smoked Pulled Pork, and Catfish Po-Boy Sandwich ($9.95-$11.95) (Add cheese or bacon for $1; add both for $2.) Wings are served either boneless or traditional with your choice of Bar-B-Q,

Honey Buffalo, Mango Jerk, Honey Mustard or Spicy Chipotle Bar-B-Q. (5 wings for $4.95; 10 for $8.95; 20 for $17.95.) Entrees include Smoked Brontosaurus Short Ribs, Smoked Baby Back Ribs, Chicken & Ribs, Roasted Half Chicken, Brisket and Pork Platter, Blackened Salmon, Grilled Shrimp Skewers, Grilled Hanger Steak, and Grilled Porterhouse Pork Chop. ($15.95$21.95) Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm and the menu features Wings-nWaffles, Steak & Eggs, Fried Chicken on a Biscuit, French toast, and Omelets with a choice of fillings). ($9.95-$14.95) Sides are Grilled Corn, Cole Slaw, French Fries, Sweet Potato Fries, Pit Beans & Pork, Mashed Potatoes, Homemade Mac & Cheese with Bacon, Basket of Corn Bread, Collard Greens, and Baked Potato. ($2.95-$6.95) “The menu may be minimal, but it’s a very big process,” Bernstein says. “There’s a lot of labor, a lot of prep time that goes into this.” The beers are all domestic and there’s a choice of 50 on tap and in bottles; and some old style Southern drinks with a choice of high-end bourbons. BBQ meats; 23 flat screen TVs and a choice of 50 beers. Smokin’ Barrel may not be the first BBQ restaurant to open in Hudson; but with the in-house smoker, it’s a stand-out.

And where else can you get battered Fried Pickles?

3 Easy Ways to Warm Up Any bedroom (BPT) - As the weather cools down, people are preparing for cozy nights indoors. Perhaps nowhere is the desire for warm, comfortable living spaces more important than the bedroom. Fortunately, it only takes a few simple tricks to warm up any bedroom in just one weekend. Step 1: Switch to down and feather bedding Down and feather users reported warmth as the main reason for purchasing down products, tied at 55 percent with softness and fluffiness, according to a 2013 nationwide Harris survey conducted on behalf

of the American Down and Feather Council (ADFC). “Down is a natural insulator that creates warmth without the added weight that many synthetic fill materials have; and the lightness creates a fluffier bedding experience,” says Stephen Palmer, ADFC president. That warmth even allows

homeowners to turn down the thermostat and save some money on heating costs. In fact, 80 percent of users said down and feather products can help save money on home heating bills, the survey found. Step 2: Opt for a warm color palette Cont’d on page 26

3 Easy Ways to Warm Up Any bedroom Cont’d from page 25 Don’t underestimate the psychology of color. Warmer colors, such as shades of red, orange and yellow, can heat up a room. Choose rich tones to create an inviting feel. Popular colors this year include cayenne shades of red, deep oranges, and bright, botanical-inspired yellows. Accent walls or warm, richly-colored accessories are excellent options for those not ready to commit to such a bold color in the entire bedroom. Throw pillows and blankets, rugs or art can be easily changed with holidays or seasons. Step 3: Select warm, effective lighting Warm up your bedroom and create an inviting living space with strategically placed lighting. When

selecting artificial light, avoid bulbs that cast blue tones and select bulbs with yellow hues that light the space with a soft glow. Keep in mind that sometimes overheard lighting can be harsh, especially in a bedroom. Place table lamps on bedside tables or add a standing lamp near a comfortable chair. Candles are a simple and inexpensive way to add a warm glow. If desired, pick an inviting scent that complements the season – apple cinnamon for fall or evergreen for winter. And don’t forget to take advantage of natural light by selecting window treatments that let in sunlight, such as transparent curtains. Just these few simple changes can warm up the bedroom during the cold

days ahead. Not only will you keep toasty warm at night, but you’ll enjoy the inviting space during the day as well.
