Ford Transit Custom wins International Van of the Year 2013 Trophy

W

ith 117 points out of 133 available, the all-new Ford Transit Custom is the winner of the International Van of the Year award 2013, beating the Dacia Dokker and Mercedes-Benz Citan to take the trophy, which was presented at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover. The most prestigious award in the light commercial vehicle sector is presented annually to the van which, in the opinion of the 24 judges, makes the most significant contribution to the efficient carriage of goods by road, to safety and to sustainability. Announcing the 2013 result, Chairman of the International Van of the Year Jury, Pieter Wieman, said, “The winning van design had impressed the jury on a number of fronts and above all by the fact Ford has succeeded in building a complete new light van on an existing platform and with the use of existing driveline and chassis components. Furthermore, the new Transit sets new standards with regard to styling, drivability and load carrying ability. The new Transit Custom has a car-like exterior and interior which makes the vehicle attractive for the growing European group of self employed people and craftsmen that use the vehicle for both business and private journeys.” The driving dynamics are also very close to a passenger car which is partly due to the

PSA Peugeot Citroën & Toyota announce a new cooperation on light commercial vehicles in Europe

T

oyota Motor Europe and PSA Peugeot Citroën has signed a new agreement on light commercial vehicles for the European market. Under the plan, PSA Peugeot Citroën is to supply Toyota with light commercial vehicles for sale in Europe under the Toyota brand. As a first step, starting in the second quarter of 2013, PSA Peugeot Citroën will supply Medium Size Vans derived from its existing vehicles Peugeot Expert and Citroën Dispatch. The agreement also includes collaboration on next generation vehicles which are to be produced by PSA Peugeot Citroën. The collaboration is expected to last beyond 2020 and thereby cancels the long standing arrangement with Fiat Professional that produced the same van badged as the Scudo. 4 FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Winter 2012

Under the plan, Toyota Motor Europe is to participate in the development and industrial investment costs for the next generation product. There are no plans for the two companies to enter into capital tie-ups or joint production. “The Light Commercial Vehicle segment is an important one for us in many markets

throughout Europe,” said Toyota Motor Europe President and CEO Didier Leroy. “By joining forces with PSA Peugeot Citroën, we have found a good solution for our loyal customers following the recent discontinuation of our own Hiace model. We already enjoy a successful jointventure partnership with PSA Peugeot Citroën in the small car segment and they are a leader in the European light commercial vehicle market, with a solid reputation for quality and versatility.” According to a representative from Fiat Professional, the relationship with PSA Peugeot/Citroën regarding the joint production of the Fiorino/Bipper & Nemo in the mini-cargo (B) segment and the Fiat Ducato/Peugeot Boxer & Citroën Relay will not be affected by this announcement.

An Post enhances delivery services with Zetes track & trace

A

n Post has completed a major project with Zetes to enhance its customer delivery service levels. The contract, which involves supplying an electronic proof of delivery (ePOD) solution to equip all 4,200 of its delivery staff with a 100% paperless track and trace system, is a key element of its development strategy. In commissioning the solution from Zetes, An Post had four key objectives: to improve the overall customer delivery experience through the provision of real time tracking data; to reduce the manual administration required for proof of delivery (POD) cards; to ensure that An Post has the capability of taking immediate advantage of future developments in mobile technology and fi nally, to further improve the company’s environmental footprint through lower paper consumption.

Renault-Nissan to supply 15,000 fleet deal with Danone

he Renault-Nissan Alliance is to provide 15,000 vehicles in an exclusive fleet contract with the Paris-based nutritional food company Danone. The first-of-its-kind deal for the Alliance provides a full range of vehicles to Danone in 25 countries for at least five years.

lowers.ie, Ireland’s premier on-line f lower store delivering f lowers, bouquets and arrangements locally, nationally and internationally, has just taken delivery of the fi rst of a fleet of five Fiesta Vans, which will be used for its express delivery service. In wishing Martin O’Gara, General Manager of flowers.ie well on the deal, Paul O’Sullivan, Regional Manager for Ford Ireland said, “The Fiesta Van is the ideal vehicle for a company like flowers.ie. Its low running costs and great manoeuvrability make it the perfect choice for delivering to houses, great and small, around the country. Its top class safety rating ensures the fragile f lower products arrive in pristine condition.” Martin O’Gara of flowers.ie said: “Our drivers love the Fiesta Van – it is a great car to

drive and with our branding on the vehicle it really is a ‘head-turner’ on the road. We are also keeping our costs low with three years free servicing, three years roadside assistance and a three year warranty.” The Dublin based company has seen a significant growth in business from Irish people who are working / living abroad to the extent that now 40 percent of flowers.ie business comes from overseas clients. “It is bittersweet for ourselves in that our business is benefiting to a large extent from the high number of Irish people who have left our shores over the last number of years,” added Martin. “However, we provide a valuable service in keeping those emigrants in touch with their loved ones in a very real way and that is very heartening.”

Ford Transits join ibev Service Team

eircom Dial in 100 New Opel Astra Vans

T

he first major f leet sale of the new Opel Astra five door Van has been supplied to eircom, Ireland’s largest telecommunications provider. The fleet of 100 versions of the successful Opel Astra 5 door hatchback has been assigned to eircom’s engineering front line managers across the country. Th is will bring eircom’s fleet of Opel vehicles to almost 650. The Astra Van features a 1.3C DTi (95hp) or a 1.7 CDTi engine that boasts 125 hp but returns an impressive 4.5l/100km combined fuel consumption, with CO2 emissions of only 119g/km. To ensure the maximum standards in safety and reliability, Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) has been included as standard. Recommended retail prices start at €16,538 excluding VAT and are available in two options; the S and SC trims. The Astra Van is available with a range of options that include Satellite Navigation, Bluetooth, Parking Distance Sensors and a USB Plug-In on SC models. The rear side doors provide excellent access to the load area, which in turn has a steel mesh bulkhead as standard as well as load lashing eyes to ensure the highest levels of safety and security for the driver and passenger.

Ford aims to Go Further with its new Commercial Vehicle range

Revealed: New Ford Transit Connect, Transit Custom & Transit

F

ord Motor Company is aiming for 500,000 annual unit sales of its commercial vehicles by 2016 which would increase its share of the European market by almost 4% from its 9.3% of today. This objective and others were presented at a special event in Amsterdam attended by 2,500 Ford dealers, employees and the media. The ‘Go Further’ event which detailed an ‘aggressive product acceleration’ in Europe that will encompass the company’s One Ford Global portfolio is all part of Ford President & CEO Alan Mulally’s way of turning around the flagging brand’s presence in the European marketplace. As one of the key speakers, Mr. Mulally targets profitable growth with the introduction of new cars, sport utility vehicles and commercial

vehicles. “Even with the near-term business environment Europe presents a significant opportunity for profitable growth,” said Alan. “Today, we are accelerating the introduction of our new products in Europe, leveraging our One Ford plan – with a full family of vehicles offering the very best quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design and value – just like we did when we transformed our business in North America.”

Stephen Odell, Ford of Europe Chairman & CEO concurred, “The European market holds potential for profitable growth that’s clouded at the moment by the economic crisis,” he said. “The total European car and CV market, including Russia, is expected to grow 20 percent in the next five years to 23 million vehicles. While others are backing off or cutting product investments, New Ford Transit Interior we at Ford are accelerating the introduction of new products, leveraging our One Ford global strengths.” Mr. Mulally also mentioned that its logistics processes will be streamlined which will cover stocking controls, better and faster delivery and lowering costs all round. Under the One Ford plan for Europe 71% of its product lineup will come under this programme by 2017 up from 43% currently. “15 truly global vehicles will be on sale by then,” he said.

Over the next two years, Ford will have completed the introduction of its new commercial vehicle range featuring class leading technology and innovation and the lowest cost of ownership. The ‘blue-oval’ brand will be ready to meet the forecasted resurgence in the European commercial vehicle marketplace that’s set to grow by more than 30% to almost 4 million units per year by 2017, with the small commercial vehicle segment alone increasing by more than 70%. The complete redesign will include the broadening of the Transit range to become a stand alone brand within the Ford family. At the top end, the long wheelbase Jumbo version follows the 1-tonne Custom model just launched. Next year will see the introduction of an all-new Transit Connect with the Transit Courier entering the compact category, a surprise addition (displayed as a prototype) due in 2014. There will also be a corresponding range of Tourneo people carriers. “With the all-new One Ford commercial vehicle line-up, Ford will have the most comprehensive and most up-to-date line-up of CVs in Europe. No brand will offer wider coverage of the light and medium commercial vehicle segments than Ford,” Barb Samardzich, Vice-President Product Development, Ford of Europe said. “We leveraged our global expertise into designing the new Transit family from the ground up with superb capability, best-in-class cost of ownership and amazing new features,” she added. Ms. Samardzich was keen to emphasise that over 6.8 million Transits have been sold over the Transit’s 47 year history.


COVER “Tough, functional and professional,” is how Barb described the all-new Ford Transit, which brings new levels of capability and versatility to the medium commercial van market.” It replaces the heaver 2 tonne Transit derivatives in Europe and other worldwide markets and will eventually replace the popular Ford E-Series range in North America. Offering a comprehensive range of body styles and versions, with multiple wheelbases, roof heights and new chassis cowl versions, the all-new and more capable Transit is tailored to meet the needs of key worldwide markets. For Europe, front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive will be provided, powered by the latest Econetic 2.2 litre Duratorq TDCi diesel. Meanwhile, the all-new Ford Transit Connect attracted huge attention with its stylish lines and deceiving load carrying ability. The sub-onetonne panel van will be sold either as a short wheelbase or long wheelbase (pictured) variant (as before), and features Kenetic Design and the latest low CO2 powertrain technologies to deliver best in class fuel economy in all of its target markets. From what we saw, the cockpit is car-like in design, with the latest Ford interior technologies and driver assistance systems installed. A dual passenger seat will also be an option similar to what PSA Peugeot Citroen offer in the Partner/Berlingo.

Mercedes-Benz Nissan - Official Van supplier gets Vito Effect to Red Bull F1 Racing

ercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles Ireland has introduced a special limited edition ‘Effect’ version of its popular Vito van. The new Vito Effect comes with a range of enhancing features that include full body colour coding, 18 inch light alloy wheel rims in titanium grey, chrome fi nish front and rear and a more dynamic side appearance. Selling at an additional retail cost of only €1,800 plus VAT, the Vito Effect is available in panel van format or as a Mixto combined people carrier-cum-van (Crew Cab) version. Body work comes in three colour choices - arctic white, obsidian black and silver metallic.

ontinuing the partnership created last season between Red Bull Racing Formula One and Infi niti, the contract to supply Red Bull Racing with Nissan Light Commercial Vehicles and related services has been extended for the 2012 season.

To support the transportation needs of Red Bull Racing at their factory in Milton Keynes and for all operations throughout the 2012 Formula One season, Nissan continues to supply a fleet of over 30 vehicles, including the award-winning Nissan NV200 and the Nissan NV400. Iveco & Dainese – working together towards safety

t the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hannover, Iveco presented new solutions for protecting the passengers of light and heavy commercial vehicles. Special D-air air bags developed by Dainese for protecting the body have been fitted to the seats for each of these prototypes. D-air technology comes from the world of motorcycle racing where it protects champions like Valentino Rossi, Nicky Hayden, Stefan Bradl and many others and is the result of over 10 years research and development work that has allowed air-bag technology to be applied to the human body around which D-air air-bags 10 FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Winter 2012

from those of drivers of smaller sized vehicles. Statistics show that vehicle roll-overs are the main problem to be coped with in improving passive safety in commercial vehicles. Road Safety Matters by Nifast Fleet Safety Services Post-Collision Support Services that it was UK registered (at least not until we hit it). What we should have picked up on was the registration number the location and the fact that they slowed approaching a junction. It is reasonable to expect they were looking for a right hand turn and would slow or stop again at another junction. Bear in mind most ‘fi nger post’ information signs are opposite a junction and difficult to read until you are right up to them. Here is the potential for the situation to develop that we outlined earlier.

R

egardless of how experienced a involved in an undesired event, be it a near-miss, a minor tip or a serious collision. Once the Authorities, the insurance people and the legal team have the required reports, a decision is usually taken on who was primarily responsible for the incident or what proportion of blame lies where. Th is will deal with the cost element and the legal ramifications if any.

However, from a driver's point of view and indeed from an employer’s point of view it is important to examine these incidents in more detail to establish the sequence of events which led up to the incident. Th is needs to be done in an open and non-judgemental manner with a view to identifying at what point prior to the event did the potential for the situation to develop, present itself.

Consider the following scenario: We are driving along a single lane regional road with a hard shoulder either side to meet with a key client. Weather conditions are good, and our speed is approximately’ 80km/h. It’s a relatively straight section of road with one UK registered vehicle (a van) about 40-50 metres. Th is vehicle is out near the centre line blocking our view. We seem to be gett ing

a litt le closer now, we check our rear view mirror and then look back to fi nd the vehicle ahead has stopped in front of us.

Bang! We are into the back of them. No one is hurt but both vehicles are damaged. Our car of course has a split radiator, so it’s now a tow-away job. The driver of the van says his neck and back are hurt and he requires an ambulance. The Gardai are informed and the paperwork starts. We call the client, who we are on the way to meet, to explain our current situation and why we will be missing our appointment. Needless to say, they’re not too pleased as their MD had changed his/ her schedule to attend the meeting. Naturally tomorrow’s schedule is now in complete disarray as well.

So where does the Post Collision Support Services element come in?

The proper response may be to: • Profi le what the driver ahead is doing and when they are doing it, hold back to increase forward vision, identify the next junction be it left or right, as they may decide to use a left junction to turn around and go back up the road • Have an escape route selected (maybe it is possible to pass them on the hard shoulder to the left if they slow to turn right) • Know what is behind and brake early to get the attention of any following drivers • Above all, question why the driver ahead is doing what they are doing! So, was the above collision foreseeable and avoidable. Probably. Not definitely, but probably. Post Collision Support is about reviewing an incident with a view to assisting a driver in understanding how they might anticipate a similar situation developing in the future and how to deal with it.

When we review the above starting maybe 5km back from the incident site, we make a few observations. We remember the driver ahead slowed slightly about half way along this route without activating the brake lights. But it didn’t really register that this occurred at a right hand junction. They then picked up the pace again. We didn’t notice the van was branded ‘Joe Bloggs Building Services’ or

Toyota Hiace confined to history

A

t the end of 2011 Toyota Motors Europe announced that the Hiace van was to be discontinued. Production of the very popular and much-loved van was killed off and Hiace is no longer marketed in Ireland by the Japanese car maker since the end of last year. As one of the most prevalent commercial vehicles of our time, its pedigree and history makes it one of the true icons in the commercial vehicle world.

Toyota chiefs said at the time that limited sales and an inability to comply with Euro 5 engine emissions legislation were the reasons behind the move to remove the Hiace from the Toyota catalogue. Toyota Ireland subsequently confi rmed that sales had ceased with Euro5 regulations coming into effect from 1 January 2012. Although Ireland and some other European countries did have a derogation until December 2012, it decided to ditch the Hiace sooner than was necessary. Despite the demise of the Hiace, Toyota is committed to return to this segment of the light commercial market in the coming years with the introduction of a replacement for the Hiace in the future. The recent announcement in relation to a tie-up with PSA Peugeot/CitroĂŤn verifies this – see News Story page 4. At the time of the announcement, Ian Corbett, Marketing Operations Manager with Toyota Ireland informed Fleet Van & Utility, “Toyota has confirmed its long-term commitment to be present in the LCV market in Europe and to develop new and innovative light commercial vehicles in the coming years. Hiace and the introduction of a new vehicle in this category.� The Toyota Hiace (H10) was fi rst produced in 1967. That model lasted for ten years before it was replaced by the second generation in 1977 and was produced as a delivery van and a cab-over pick up. Designated as the H20, H30 and H40, the second generation of the Hiace lasted until 1982. Th is revision had a more streamlined body style and single headlights instead of the previous dual setup. A new engine was also

introduced with the fi rst arrival of a 2.2 litre diesel powerplant offered. Toyota also added some new variations of the Hiace, then available as a double cab pick up, a high roof commuter vehicle or an extended long wheelbase van. In 1982 the third generation of the Hiace came along. It was designated as H50, H60, H70, H80 and H90 and was produced up until 1989. At this time Toyota was paying more attention to driver comfort and this model had a much improved cab design. It was also at that time that the model number directly represented t he wheelbase dimensions. H50 was the short wheelbase, H6 0 w a s long wheelbase and the H70 was considered the super long wheelbase. H80 and H90 related to the two pick-up versions in short and long wheelbase. By 1989 the Toyota Hiace was one of the most popular and biggest selling vans in Ireland. Known as the H100 it remained in production until 2004 and was again available in both short and long wheelbases. A new range of engines were on offer from a 2.0 litre petrol up to a 3.0 litre diesel. While the previous model had built a strong reputation, this was probably the generation that shot the Hiace to the top of the sales charts at the time with only the Ford

Transit outselling it in this country. By the time the fi fth and final generation of the Hiace arrived in 2004 the face of the Hiace had changed substantially. Here was a new van that embraced the modern age and became more desirable with industry. However, Toyota was growing its passenger car business at breakneck speed and while there was a new four-cylinder DOHC engine fitted in the Hiace, the writing was already on the wall, with Euro 5 coming over the horizon and Toyota not having a compliant engine in the pipeline. Such is the pedigree of the Toyota Hiace over the 44 years of its existence, it is litt le wonder that it holds fond memories for a large slice of the commercial vehicle-driving population. Many of them still populate our roads today and that is likely to continue, given the longevity of its style and competence. As a panel van it has a reputation of being tough and comfortable. It has been enormously successful for Toyota and has been the van of choice across a wide section of industry including construction companies, as a delivery van and with utility companies and state organisations. It was also hugely popular as a minibus and with taxi drivers. However, the Toyota Hiace will probably be best remembered as the vehicle of choice for all walks of life in Ireland. It was robust and adaptable and because of its shape and width it was easy to park and manoeuvre in the city. It was also assured on the open road and above all, it was ultra reliable and inexpensive to repair and maintain. With the announcement of its forthcoming alliance with PSA Peugeot/CitroĂŤn, Toyota is going down a different route for future light commercial vehicles. However, we can be sure that the strengths and attributes that made the Hiace such a popular choice will certainly be incorporated into the next generation of Toyota vans.

64th IAA Commercial Vehicles Show – Hanover, Germany

A

t the opening ceremony for the 64th IAA Commercial Vehicles Show, Matthias Wissmann, (pictured) President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) told an audience, “Th is IAA is an impressive demonstration of the drive for innovation throughout the commercial vehicle industry. The new vehicles are becoming even more efficient in terms of consumption, even safer and even cleaner. Over 350 world premieres – two thirds of them by suppliers – document the progress made in reducing CO2, in aerodynamics, optimising classical drivetrains and developing alternative drivetrains. With 1,904 exhibitors from 46 countries, the IAA has also become even more international.”

Its truck-style frame features rear-wheel drive, direct injection turbocharged diesel engines, 4x4 versions, natural-gas engines, up to 17.2 m3 of loading space volume and 210 cm internal height, common rail fuel injection, six-speed transmissions and seven tonnes maximum permitted mass.

Iveco Powerful, environmentally friendly and reliable, the Daily showcased all its features at Hanover: light and versatile so as to meet the transport demands of any professional.

In brief, these are the strengths that summarise the history of an undisputed star in the lightduty commercial vehicle market.

Nissan Nissan continues to fulfi ll its objective in reaching the number 1 spot in global van sales and sees the further development of its electric vans as a means to that end. On show was the premiere of the e-NV200 Concept sporting FedEx colours, backed by two other electric Commercial Vehicles, the Cabstar e-Refrigerator and the e-NT400 Cabstar Concept.

“Our exhibitors are presenting their innovations on an area of 260,000 square metres – which is equal to 44 football pitches. The slogan of the IAA, ‘Commercial Vehicles – Driving the Future,’ is therefore virtually tailor-made for this trade fair,” Mr. Wissmann said. He added that major topics were the optimisation of aerodynamics and vehicles with alternative drivetrains. “With less drag, and with hybrid and electric motors, all the way to fuel cells, commercial vehicles will in future use even less fuel and therefore have lower CO2 output,” the VDA President underlined. “New driver-assistance systems were making commercial vehicles even safer,” he said, “and trucks were already leading innovation, for example with the emergency braking assist.”

GM Opel A combination of Combos with varying ‘configurations’ took up a large portion of the floor space on the Opel stand. Most of the exhibits however were German spec. Racking systems provided by Sortimo and Bott were used. From the 108 variants available on the Combo, Opel states that it has “the right model variant for every utility profi le.”

PSA Peugeot Citroen Side by side were the Peugeot and Citroen stands demonstrating the latest EV technology from the PSA camp. Both from their light van range, Peugeot Partner and Citroen Berlingo have now been fully electrified. The new Partner Electrique and Electric Berlingo will be on sale mid-2013 featuring a 47 kW (67 hp) motor and torque levels of 200 Nm and a range of up to 170 kilometres.

REPORT Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Volkswagen kept the German f lag f lying high at its home venue with almost 100 commercial vehicles on exhibit at the IAA. Central to its display was the e-T! an electric powered concept based on the Transporter for the postal service. On the eve of the Show the Cross Caddy and Amarok Canyon were revealed at a separate venue to an invited audience. “Diversity for every job” is the brand’s theme.

Fiat Professional With the Fiat Auto Group rarely out of the headlines, its commercial vehicle arm is forging ahead with additional versions of the multi award winning Doblo Cargo, and the showing of the new Strada Pick-Up truck which att racted a lot of attention. Pity it is not available in RHD … as yet! See Test Drive Report next month!

Ford Naturally enough pride of place at the Ford stand was the newly crowned International Van of the Year 2013, the Ford Transit Custom freshly logoed following the prize ceremony. Among its big display were the next generation 2 tonne Transit and Transit Connect which all share the Ford Kinetic design theme. No sign of the Transit Courier though. See further features on Pages 8 & 9.

Mercedes-Benz Many examples of Mercedes-Benz, van range were prominently placed in the Daimler halls. Premiered was the new Citan Van (based on the Renault Kangoo), the Vito E-Cell Crewbus, the Sprinter E-Cell prototype as well as various versions of the Vito and Viano. MobiloVan is the brand’s new mobility guarantee which ensures that customers are kept on the move in the case of breakdown.

Sortimo Globelyst C, Sortimo’s lightweight racking system has gone to the next level with the Black Edition prototype manufactured from carbon. For rough, tough jobs, the new X-Shell launched is a stackable transport container for all boxes from Sortimo’s product range. They are robust, weatherproof and multifunctional.

‘Fuso’s 4x4 – Off-Road at a Canter! being said, the suspension gives a sense that a driver would have to try extremely hard to damage this hardy light commercial. Fitted with a five-speed transmission, gear selection is not as smooth as would normally be found in road-going versions. Though not currently available, the possibility of specifying Fuso’s superb ‘Duonic’ automated transmission, may come in the future and would be a welcome option.

C

anter is such a common sight on Irish roads that it often goes completely unnoticed. However, taking to the highways in the 4x4 version will draw as many curious looks as if it was a convertible. The high stance of Fuso’s off-roader ensures puzzlement on the faces of the general public. At first they are not sure what is unusual about the truck, but they know that something is different. Canter is world renowned as a tough and highly versatile work unit, which has earned it the title of the biggest selling commercial vehicle in Daimler AG’s portfolio. So adding off-road capability simply extends the possible uses further. Although targeting a niche market in Ireland, when global sales opportunities are included, the idea behind a 4x4 version becomes obvious. Even in Ireland there are many operators who need a vehicle with the ability to leave the paved surfaces occasionally. The standard Canter is robust to say the least, and as we expected, the 4x4 is tougher again, and displays all the qualities necessary to instil confidence. The high ground clearance gives a good approach angle of 35°, and a departure of 25° - and though the front differential is positioned somewhat lower than one would expect, it did not cause any difficulties over any of the three test sites we tackled.

As an all purpose site service vehicle and for those who need a tough, durable, light commercial off-roader, Fuso’s 4x4 Canter has the capability. When combined with a proven track record on versatility, reliability and endurance, leaves us with little to throw muck at.

In-cab comforts are the same as found in any Canter, and the 4x4 is also available in Crew Cab format. Getting into the drivers seat could be improved with the addition of extra grab handles as the cab stands significantly higher than on-road model, and we found it a bit tricky on the next section of our test - off-road on soft-ground. In two wheel mode we did manage to get stuck when turning tight on a full lock on very soft ground. However we were quite surprised how far we managed to get through the muddy wet field before we needed to get out and manually engage the front wheel hub locks. Once the hub locks were engaged the Canter pulled itself out without difficulty, and ploughed on regardless, revealing how competent an off-roader it is. Its simplicity in off-road driving is a great benefit, as drivers have enough to do negotiating whatever terrain they are driving over. For on-road driving Fuso’s Canter could use a six-speed transmission, we found it revving out of the green at speeds above 70 kp/h. That being said it is quite comfortable on the road, and behaves like a normal Canter with a high seating position resulting in better visibility.

We first ventured for a drive in a regular quarry in dry conditions, here we were impressed with the assured footing and stability of the Canter. To some degree it managed to get around fine in two wheel drive mode. Only when we searched for areas with loose surfaces and poor traction did we required to engage four wheel drive. The 175hp (129 kW) engine delivers 430 Nm of torque and feels just right for the work. When driving around the quarry, and driving on our next test section, a mixed wet and dry building site, we found the ride to be quite stiff and the leaf spring suspension quite unyielding. Citroën Berlingo Airdream – ‘The Heir to Andre’s Dream’

The attractive styling of Citroën’s light commercial, presents a more car like profile, and is more in keeping with the French manufacturer's passenger models. The interior is also more car like, offering a softer finish yet remaining durable and easy to clean. Optional equipment includes front fog cornering lights, retractable mirrors, parking sensors and air conditioning. Over the production run of Berlingo almost as many options have become available for the working aspect of the van as for the driver. So devices such as roof racks, tow bars and window protection grilles are all custom fit to improve vehicle utilisation.

T

he highly competitive light commercial sector is one of the most crowded, and is typified by the no nonsense manner of the vehicle owners. If fleet operators are excluded, many vehicles in this class are owned and run by self employed or small businesses. For these operators the van is the business, if it does not work neither do they, so practicality and reliability are paramount. Andre Citroën saw a market for this type of transport back in the days of the legendary 2CV, and the lineage is almost tangible from behind the wheel of the latest Berlingo. Decades of experience has enabled Citroën to continually develop its popular light commercial, with numerous small improvements over its long production run making it a respected and practical vehicle. Important because, aside of the transport aspect, these vans often double as the office and the car. The Berlingo Airdream eHDi comes with a Euro 5 rated 1,560 cc four cylinder diesel and 6-speed automated EGS transmission. In this cost conscious segment the automated option may not suit everyone. Nevertheless, it could be worth looking at the benefits two pedal driving brings. If operating in fleets with regular driver changes, it may help to reduce downtime and therefore costs. Operation is simple, drive is selected by turning the mode selector to ‘A’. Although it is possible to select ratios or override the automation by using the paddles mounted on the steering column. Berlingo Airdream boasts a ‘micro-hybrid’ drivetrain which incorporates regenerative braking where the energy is re-used to power the engines Eco Stop/Start system. Combined with the EGS transmission Citroën claims a 15% fuel saving on the urban driving cycle.

If the ‘Extenso’ folding seat option is selected, load space increases to 4.1m3, and allows for long loads to protrude into the cabin area, and provides additional storage space under the middle seat. The centre seat also folds and can be used as a desk. In total Berlingo will comfortably take two Europallets, and has improved the six load securing anchorage points to ensure the cargo stays in one place.

Vehicles in this class may not always be treated with the respect they deserve even when they have worked hard to earn it. Berlingo continues to look good and do the job well with a certain touch of style.

Extenso further improves the practicality of what is already a practical work vehicle. Rear doors open to 180° and the easy to operate rear quarter roof hatch caters for taller items. Not always necessary, but handy to have all the same, and improves the flexibility of the van. An optional offside sliding door can be fitted to compliment the standard nearside opening. On the road Airdream delivers a comfortable car like drive, the 6-speed EGS responds well with a smooth shift action. If used as a service vehicle, where once on location, little or no driving is done for the rest of the day, the choice of either manual or automated transmission won’t matter a great deal. However if used for deliveries where driving is the main activity the automated EGS is worth considering, and may help residual values. Safety is taken care of with standard ESP and ABS, though stability and roadholding are excellent, as is braking performance. Urban delivery Operations Today and in the Future

unloading can in turn cause delays to the throughput of transport traffic. All of this makes it difficult to commit to fi xed delivery deadlines and achieve overall optimisation. Consequently smaller vehicles are deployed.

A

s part of a traffic survey, PTV AG has quantified the annual requirements of a German citizen in terms of goods requirements: each year, one citizen consumes around 3 tonnes of food, including packaging and waste material, 130 kg of drugstore products, 130 kg of newspapers and post, and also 185 kg of non-food items. That corresponds to the delivery of one truckload of goods. According to this calculation, a city of 300,000 inhabitants would require the delivery of around 1000 truckloads per day. On top of this there is also the supply traffic which caters to the needs of industry, as well as service, waste disposal and construction vehicles. Based on model calculations produced by PTV AG, urban freight traffic for the city of Zurich and its surrounding area totals some eleven million tonnes per year. This is even before taking into account the issue of delivery deadlines. Many goods, such as newspapers and specific foodstuffs for example, must be delivered fresh each day. Some products can in fact be stored, however storage areas in cities are limited if not somewhat rare. In addition, further restrictions are also imposed on logistics companies: due to customer time slot requirements, consignments cannot be optimally combined, and any potential for combination of consignments is further limited as a result of urban access restrictions. Often there are no loading areas, and the obstructions caused to the flow of traffic by loading and

Many cities, logistics companies, the automotive industry and research establishments are working together on concepts to improve logistics planning capabilities and urban road traffic conditions. As such, traffic control systems are helping to ensure that better use can be made of the limited areas available for traffic. Combining consignments and cooperation measures in this area are contributing to shifting delivery vehicles to outlying areas. Optimisation of organisation and fleet structures, as well as the use of IT resources, are able to improve CO2 efficiency. In the future, urban delivery transport will continue to gain in importance – and will also be subject to additional restrictions. Significant trends here include the Climate Conferences in Copenhagen and Durban, which have set a clear focus on reducing greenhouse gases. Th is will also form the relevant target level against which the efficiency of the steps being taken must be measured. The internalisation of external costs in line with the “polluter pays” principle will be used to finance measures. Costs for avoiding traffic noise or pollution will be charged to the transport sector. Urban delivery logistics will adapt to the amended business models of industry and commerce, leading to new product range structures and supply models (petrol stations have become grocery stores, food stores have become post offices, etc.). One of the most exciting challenges will be e-commerce. It too can extend urban delivery with new supply models, which in turn leads to new transport structures. Whereas in the past deliveries have primarily been carried out in inner-city areas, in the future delivery traffic will increase in residential areas. Delivery points are also changing on a daily basis (customer addresses, alternative delivery locations), i.e. routes have to be replanned each day. Customers expect quick deliveries, and anything which takes more than one or two days results in a significant reduction in acceptance. Combining all of these elements with efficient route planning represents a significant expansion of the range of tasks undertaken by logistics companies.

In general it can be said that further individualisation of consignments will also occur in the future. The main endeavour for urban delivery transport will be to achieve maximum efficiency in the execution of transport services in terms of CO2 levels. Th is will be ensured through a high degree of utilisation of vehicle capacity - e.g. by combining consignments and transporting them in the “correct” vehicles to guarantee a reliable, quality delivery service. In the future, large trucks will therefore not be able to take over the tasks carried out by small vans as delivery vehicles. On the contrary, progressively smaller vehicles will play an increasing role in further shaping the characteristics of the urban delivery sector. Many cities are experimenting with how to make use of electric vehicles for zero-emission deliveries. A promising approach is to deploy urban fleets made up of electric vehicles. These vehicles, stationed permanently at transhipment points close to the city, can take over the consignments from the national transport system.

Test Drive Report:

O

f all the van manufacturers, Iveco cannot be accused of resting on its laurels with the Italian brand continuing to refresh its best selling Daily range. In its latest guise, the Daily not only gets refreshed on the exterior and interior but also the drivetrain has been enhanced. All together, the modifications have achieved the objective of reducing the total cost of ownership. And as with previous generations of Dailys, long service life is guaranteed. When in Italy, I’m always intrigued by the many older Dailys still at work and still in good shape. While the changes to the bodywork and styling inside are appreciated, it is the new range of Euro 5 engines that attract the attention of transport/ fleet managers these days. The introduction of the 205 hp 3.0 litre Twin Turbo, the most powerful 4-cylinder diesel in its category is most interesting, and the subject of this Test Drive Report. From this run, we managed to achieve a record fuel consumption return of 31.2 mpg (7.5 l/100 kms) which pleased the powers that be at Iveco Ltd! The 3.5 tonne Daily 35S21 high-roof panel van with 17.2 cubic metres body and loaded with 980 kg was taken on a rural route mixed with National and Primary roads. Average speed was 38 mp/h (61.6 kp/h). The most powerful 4-cylinder diesel on the market, the 205 hp, 3.0 litre with intercooled Twin Turbo technology develops 470 Newton metres of torque. This is the first engine of its kind to cross the 200 hp threshold thanks to the use of two turbo compressors: one low inertia unit for an instant and enlightening response at low revs and a second unit that delivers maximum power. in association with ZF transmissions, which provides smooth engagement all the time. Nothing wrong in the way it moves either. We all know the Daily’s truck-style chassis frame and rear wheel drive combination is its strength, always delivering a smooth yet positive drive. Attention to road safety systems have always been maintained and the latest Daily is no different. The introduction of the latest generation Electronic Stability Programme - ESP9, brakes each wheel individually and reduces engine speed if the vehicle starts to lose stability. ABS, EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution), ASR (traction control) and Hill Holder are also among the safety features fitted. This version of the Daily looks significantly different as the new front features a prominent silver bar on the grille to house a bigger Iveco wording. The new headlights now incorporate DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) and optional cornering fog lights. Air flow distribution has been improved through the redesigned grille for the new engines. New Daily’s interior has many improved comfort elements through increased functionalities thanks to on-board equipment. Storage space has been cleverly created too. Standard features on this unit are a

dual passenger seat, full steel bulkhead and side sliding doors with 1250 mm aperture. Among the options fitted include:- cruise control, heated/electric mirrors, full air-con, suspended drivers seat, cornering lights plus a rear camera and coated plywood floor in the load bay. Indeed the big advantage of this engine is not only the generous power available but also its fuel economy. The best of both worlds. With over 2 million units sold, the new Daily has reconfirmed its role as the ultimate professional vehicle for the professional user.

reated in 1898, the Paris Motor Show is the biggest event of its type in the world. From 29 September to 14 October over 1.3 million visitors are expected to call into Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. Fleet Van & Utility’s Rob Van Dieten looks at the exhibit premieres from a commercial point of view. FORD TOURNEO CONNECT Stylish and spacious is how Ford describes the all-new Tourneo Connect, the passenger version of the Transit Connect. Included in the powertrain options will be Ford’s award winning 1.0 litre EcoBoost pet rol engine, Active City stop and SYNC in-car infotainment system. HYUNDAI ix35 FUEL CELL The Korean brand’s commitment to ecofriendly mobilit y sees the next phase of its hyd rogen technology evolve into the ix35 Fuel Cell. It accelerates to 100 km/h in 12.5 seconds, has a top speed of 160 km/h and can travel 588 km without refuelling. By 2015 Hyundai expect to sell 1000 units.

Coloured bumpers, the side sills and wheel arches to give it a more rugged appearance complimented by other enhancements to give it an off-road look.

Opel seeks light commercial success with new Combo The Sportive specification features extras such as air conditioning, height adjustable drivers seat and body-colour bumpers and mirrors, as well as the aforementioned sliding side door. The interior will be familiar to anyone who has sat in a current Doblo; apart from the Opel badge on the steering wheel, the switchgear and controls are pure Fiat. That’s no criticism though, the Combo is a well laid out vehicle, with controls where you expect them and plenty of storage areas, including in this high roofed van, a useful overhead compartment. The driving position is comfortable, offering good visibility, aided by large mirrors that include a separate blind spot section.

ross-brand collaborations and platform sharing are the order of the day in the commercial vehicle world, as manufacturers seek to maximise returns on investment in difficult economic times. Opel, through parent General Motors has already tried and tested this approach with its larger panel vans, and has now teamed up with Fiat Professional for the third generation of its light panel van offering, the Combo. Based on the current Fiat Doblo Cargo, the 2011 International Van of the Year, the latest Combo enters a tough market against established rivals such as the Volkswagen Caddy, Citroen Berlingo, Peugeot Partner, Ford Transit Connect, and of course, the Doblo. That it is meant as a serious contender in this market can be seen by the number of variants that customers can select from - indeed finding the Combo of choice could be a potentially confusing affair. As well as two trim levels (Combo and Sportive), there is a choice of short (L1) or long (L2) wheelbase, two height variants (H1 & H2), and two gross vehicle weights (2.0 and 2.3 tonnes). Payloads range from 705kg up to one tonne, while the Combo offers between 3.4 and 4.2 cubic metres of loadspace depending on the model. Braked towing weights range from 1 tonne to 1.5 tonnes. Three turbocharged common rail fuel injection diesel engines provided also by Fiat are offered. The 1.3CDTi has 90PS and 200Nm of torque and is mated to a five speed manual gearbox. The mid-sized 1.6 CDTi developing 105PS and 290Nm is likely to be the most popular in Ireland. The top of the range 2.0 CDTi has 135PS and 320Nm torque. Both larger capacity units

come with a six-speed manual gearbox, while Stop-Start technology is also available as an option with these engines. Access to the load compartment is via 60/40 split side mounted rear doors. In addition L2 models get both nearside and offside slide side-access doors. L1 Sportive models feature a nearside door as standard, with an offside door available as an option. All versions are wide enough to accept a Europallet with a maximum load width of 1,714 mm, dropping to 1,230 mm between the wheel arches. Lengthwise the L1 model can take loads up to 1,820 mm with the L2 version extending to 2,170 mm.

On the move, the Combo is well insulated from noise from the load area by the full sized bulkhead, while the engine is notably quiet and refined even on motorways. It’s quite economical too - drivers should expect to return fuel consumption figures of around 5.6 l/100 km (50 mpg), while the 290 Nm of torque from the 1.6 diesel engine is more than up to the job. On the downside though, it is disappointing to see that ESP isn’t standard, costing an extra €558 to have fitted. That gripe aside, the new Opel Combo is a worthy contender against established rivals in the competitive compact van category. Thoroughly modern and versatile, it represents a significant step forward from its Corsa derived predecessors.

Fleet Van & Utility recently test drove the 1.6CDTi L1 H2 model. Featuring the higher roof, it offers a maximum load height of 1,550 mm compared to 1,305 on the regular van. Incidentally you can only order the high roof with the shorter wheel base – Opel doesn’t offer an L2 H2 model, presumably for fear of users exceeding payload capabilities. As tested, the payload for this van is 1.0 tonne, and it can tow a braked trailer up to 1.3 tonnes
