SHELLIE MURTAGH
Shellie Murtagh is from Limerick, Ireland and has been surrounding herself with horses from a very young age and at nine years old showed great determination in saving up enough money for her first horse. At the age of 14 she began breaking in and training young show jumping horses. Around the same time by coincidence or fate she worked with a teenage boy on the autism spectrum that changed her thinking. This was a boy who was thought un-teachable yet could ride a horse with relative ease. Having spent a considerable amount of time with him Shellie was inspired to develop her skills so that she could improve her methods of teaching people on the autism spectrum using horses to communicate with them. In 2007 Shellie bought a four month old Friesian foal from Holland and began his training as a therapy horse and named him Slí Maith which is the Irish for ‘A Good Way’. He is now part of the family and is the one who reminds Shellie daily, of the potential significance of their work together. The SHELLIE Project was developed as part of her vision to advance services for children with special abilities and on the autism spectrum. Shellie trained to become a horse riding instructor with the British Horse Society completing Equestrian Qualifications GB Limited BHS Stage 3 in 2011. Shellie received her Bachelor of Education and a BA in Philosophy in 2013. Shellie pursues continuing professional development and relevant courses which include 2005-2006, Psychology correspondence course, DCU Irish Centre for Talented Youth. 2007, The Academy of Applied Physics University of Limerick. 2009, Information Technology Fetac

Shellie’s plan is to develop a national primary school devoted to children with special abilities. Shellie wishes to present a whole new methodology to educating children with special abilities in a more appropriate, interesting and enjoyable manner with the aim of providing a better quality of life. Shellie’s other passion is singing, from her days in school where she sang in the choirs and as a soloist in both Salesians Primary and Crescent College Comprehensive secondary school and the choir in the Dominicans church in Limerick. Shellie reached the All Ireland Final of Scór na nÓg in the group category as well as winning many local categories. Shellie has also sang with some local bands and preformed to a full house in Dolans Warehouse.
THE SHELLIE PROJECT Shellie’s Project is planning to develop a national primary school recognised by the Department of Education and Skills (D.E.S.), devoted to children with autism and special abilities which will incorporate horse therapy along with the techniques and methods learned during her teacher training at Mary Immaculate College. Combining the two will present a whole new approach to educating children with special abilities in a more interesting, suitable and enjoyable manner.
Blue Shellie has witnessed remarkable changes in children on the autism spectrum while riding with them. This along with research to date and other anecdotal evidence led Shellie to the view that the horse connection needs further research and she hopes to achieve this as part of the project. Davnet Kiernan O’Brien is Shellie’s partner on this project and shares the same enthusiasm and passion for this vision. Davnet and her husband Cyril, owners of the Clonlara Equestrian Centre, an A.I.R.E. approved yard have over 25 years experience working with horses and children with special abilities. The SHELLIE Project is now collaborating with Brunel University in London, the University of Limerick and Connor Solutions U.K. The principal individuals are Prof Ian Sutherland, Professor of Bioprocess Engineering, Dr. Christina Michailidou Specialist Physiotherapist in Graded Exercise Therapy at King’s College London, Dr Tara Dalton B.Eng Ph.D. and Dr Eric Dalton BSc PhD from the Stokes Institute in University of Limerick, and Dermot Guerin CEO of Connor Solutions. Brunel University have developed and given on loan to Clonlara Equestrian Centre, BABS (Brunel Active Balance System), a mechanical horse that replicates the motion of a horse in walk.

“It’s a great honour for me to have recorded this song with Shellie. Her interpretation raises the piece to a new level and the feeling I experienced when we sang together for the recording is something I certainly won’t forget. Many thanks for the opportunity to be part of this Shellie.” - Eoin Coughlan

MILFORD CARE CENTRE
Blue
Milford Care Centre (adjacent to the University of Limerick in Castletroy, Limerick), is a provider of Specialist Palliative Care and Older Persons Services to the people of the Mid West. The overall infrastructure at Milford Care Centre has changed dramatically over the years since the establishment of Milford House Nursing Home by the Little Company of Mary in 1928. Despite these physical changes we, as a healthcare facility, have strived to ensure that we continue to deliver the highest quality and safe care to our residents, patients and visitors. Today we still uphold the core message of the Little Company of Mary which is reflected in our Mission Statement. We believe that the people we serve deserve only the best and that is what we seek to achieve through our continuous improvement policies and training. Our job here in Milford Care Centre is to make a positive difference to people’s quality of life and this is a role that we take very seriously. We, as a Voluntary Service Provider, are fortunate to enjoy a very strong working partnership with the Health Service Executive and other key stakeholders. Furthermore, we feel privileged that our community supports us so much through our many volunteers and the fundraising support we receive on an ongoing basis. Our commitment to our many funders remains that we ensure that all of the resources available to Milford Care Centre are used to deliver high quality and safe patient-centred care in an efficient and effective manner. These are clearly challenging economic times so needless to say we continue to need as much support as we can get and we would like to acknowledge and thank the people for the wonderful and generous support Milford has received down through the years.
