FIRST EVER CITIZENS SUMMER ACADEMY

WIZARD OF OZ IN THE COMMUNITY

CREATIVE LEARNING WORK IN DEMAND

Following the success of our weekly drama classes that now see over 200 children attend the theatre every weekend to participate in drama activities, we ran our first ever Easter Academy during the spring break holidays. Summer 2008 sees the first Citizens Summer Academy with over 100 places up for grabs across all age ranges from 4 – 18 years. From roleplay and storytelling activities with the wee ones through to voice tuition and character work with the older groups, professional TAG drama tutors work intensively with young people to create their own devised performance pieces. The perfect way to learn new drama skills, meet new friends – and have some fun! See p. 15-17 for more information about our drama classes.

Last year over 24,000 people came to see Peter Pan and The Wizard of Oz is set to break box office records again. This year, over 900 children from the Gorbals and surrounding schools will get the chance to have a free workshop in their school and come to see The Wizard of Oz at the subsidised ticket price of just £2. Plus we hold a Charity Preview in aid of the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice which last year raised over £2000 in ticket sales. We are also delighted that Glasgow City Council will continue their sponsorship of 3 schools performances which results in 1300 Glasgow school children seeing the Christmas show absolutely free.

In the last year over 1000 sessions and workshops have been delivered by our Citizens Learning and TAG team, involving tens of thousands of participants across Scotland. In addition, over 10,000 people saw our young people’s touring performance work in venues and schools across 16 different local authorities from the highlands and islands to the borders. But the quality of the experience is just as important as the quantity and we are proud to be working on groundbreaking new projects in partnership with Glasgow Youth Justice Services – working with socially excluded young people – as well as the British Stammering Association, running a series of free drama workshops as part of a pilot project for young people who stammer. Our experienced drama practitioners continue to be in demand to bring their innovative techniques to new and challenging environments.

NEWS AWAY FROM HOME TAG’s smash hit show Yellow Moon had the honour of opening the 2008 Brits off Broadway Festival held annually at 59E59 Theaters in New York. There was a ‘Scots off Broadway’ theme this year and we were proud to be one of three companies flying the flag for Scottish theatre. Yellow Moon picked up another accolade this year – the Brian Way Award for the best writing for young people, awarded to playwright David Greig. This follows the TMA award for Best Show for Children and Young People won in 2007. Members of our Young Co. performed at the National Theatre in London in a new play by Davey Anderson. And around Scotland we’ve been just as busy touring three shows for young people, Wee Fairy Tales, Yellow Moon and Liar. From the Borders to Orkney, we now engage with over 100,000 people per year.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned

DON JUAN A NEW VERSION BASED ON CARLO GOLDONI’S DON JUAN TRANSLATED BY ROBERT DAVID MACDONALD

CITIZENS COMPANY

An unrepentant womaniser? Cruel seducer? Or a genuine lover of the beauty of women? The Spanish legend of Don Juan has been immortalised by an array of writers, actors, poets, playwrights, composers and filmmakers from Mozart to Johnny Depp. In a debauched world fuelled by lust, the infamous hedonist Don Juan leaves a trail of broken hearts, angry husbands and outraged fathers. But not all women fall at Don Juan’s feet, as they weigh up the odds of accepting the hand of the greatest lover of all time… Bringing together a 21st Century Don Juan with his historical counterpart, this is a bold collision of old and new in a radical new version of the timeless story.

THE BY HAROLD PINTER LONDON, 1959. Aston (a quiet reserved man) has helped an old tramp to escape from a café brawl and brought him back to his scruffy one-room flat. Mick (his taunting younger brother) isn’t too happy about his older brother’s act of kindness. As the old man struggles where to place his trust, he is made Caretaker of the assorted junk. Despite his obsessional fears of draughts, gas leaks and illfitting shoes, he must secure his new position to survive – by playing off one troubled brother against the other. Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker brought him his first major artistic and commercial success, and has been adapted for television and film. With a masterful use of dialogue, this is a brutally funny play that endures today as a modern classic. Directed by Philip Breen whose previous work at the Citizens includes the acclaimed productions, Shadow of a Gunman and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui.

TOMMY DOCHERTY

BRIAN BLESSED

MAIN THEATRE Thursday 4 September, 7.30pm

MAIN THEATRE Saturday 6 September, 7.30pm

More commonly known as ‘the Doc’, Gorbals-born Tommy Docherty has had an outstanding football career as player and manager but nowadays is equally in great demand as a celebrity speaker. The fast-talking, wisecracking Glaswegian is constantly sought as a media pundit by the press, radio and TV. Few others have his track record in the game. Starting out at his beloved Celtic in 1947, it was at Preston where he enjoyed the most successful period of his playing career and also picked up 25 international caps with the Scotland squad. His managerial positions have included Manchester United, Chelsea, QPR, Derby County, Porto, Wolves, Aston Villa and Scotland. A colourful and often controversial character this special evening promises to be full of entertainment from a great Scottish football legend and king of the one-liners.

With his imposing stature, distinctive booming voice and trademark beard, Brian Blessed is one of the country’s best known and highly respected actors. A distinguished and varied career has encompassed all forms of media as well as stage roles. He has appeared in a number of Shakespearean productions on both stage and screen, including four of the five Shakespeare films directed by Kenneth Branagh. A versatile actor, Blessed has also starred in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of Cats and originated the role of Baron Bombhurst for the stage musical version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. In film he has costarred with Katherine Hepburn and starred in George Lucas’ Star Wars series. He has written five books and has a great love for mountaineering which has resulted in three expeditions to Mount Everest and a trek to the North Pole. An utterly fascinating character, this talk is set to be informative, thought-provoking… and full of fun!

DENNIS TAYLOR MAIN THEATRE Friday 5 September, 7.30pm Dennis Taylor was a professional snooker player for 24 years and though now retired still regularly commentates on the sport for the BBC. He is best known for winning the 1985 World Championship, beating the then seemingly invincible Steve Davis on the final black in what is considered to have been one of the sport’s greatest finals. In addition to that Crucible success, Dennis also won the B&H Masters, the Rothmans Grand Prix, the Canadian, Australian and Tokyo Masters titles, as well as captaining Northern Ireland to the World Cup in 1987. An extremely humourous character, Dennis is snooker’s joker in the pack and this promises to be a hugely entertaining evening from one of the sport’s greatest players.

“memorable, subtle and bold” THE SCOTSMAN (on Birds of Paradise’s Beneath You)

Where the land meets water, where the urban meets rural, Alan Wilkins’s new play explores what happens when a landscape changes, when a town loses its young people and the sea loses its fish. As the spotlight falls on this small Scottish community, a complex web of interdependencies is revealed – life in this rural idyll is far from straightforward. A mother is struggling to make ends meet running a chandlery and a whalewatching boat. Her daughter is torn between her ambitions and supporting her mum and boyfriend. Then there are the two newcomers. Why have they chosen this quiet fishing village? Where does their money come from? All is not quite what it seems!

Follow Me is a dramatisation of the final moments of the beautiful party girl, Ruth Ellis, famed for the cold-blooded, murder of her lover... and for being the last woman in Britain to be hanged. The play takes us into the worlds of the hanged and the hangman in the moments leading to Ellis’ execution. Explaining her motives yet showing no remorse, she draws us into the mindset of one driven to commit the ultimate crime. Pierrepoint, the ultimate professional but increasingly plagued by doubt, explains the craft of being a pub landlord by night and a public executioner by day. An utterly fascinating tale about the British way of life... and death.

AND TELL SAD STORIES OF THE

THE PARADE BY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS Written when he was 29, The Parade is an autobiographical depiction of one of Williams’s early romances, what he later called that “pivotal summer when I took sort of a crash course in growing up,” a chronicle of how he “had finally come thoroughly out of the closet.” The play details his own emotional crisis after being dumped (for a woman) by the first great male love of his life. This living interpretation featuring Laurance Rudic, explores the flexibility of human desire as Williams poetically reveals a story of unrequited love.

PREVIEW: Tuesday 21 October, 7.30pm A GLASGAY! PRODUCTION SEE BOOKING INFORMATION FOR PRICES

Misdirected passions, deluded drag queens and seedy straight boys painfully collide in this long neglected gem amongst Tennessee Williams’s work. Startlingly modern in its concerns, it is by far his most open exploration of the queer psyche and its place in society. Tinged with his trademark melancholy and yet offering insight into the writer’s more flamboyant and comedic side, Candy and her universe will entertain and provoke in equal measure. This is a work of which Williams was hugely proud, but sadly aware could never be performed in his own lifetime. BY C HRIS O’CO NNE LL It’s 2028. In the face of a feast of unabated nihilism, hundreds of camps have been built to torture and gain information at any cost from those who aim to blow apart the rich pickings of a world that is wealthy beyond its dreams. Alex, a translator at Camp Zero, seeks to tell the world of the brutal regime within the camps, and finds his life is suddenly on the line. Survival is paramount, death may be inevitable, but the truth has to be told. Chaotic, fast and furious, Zero is an explosive and anarchic stare at the ethics of torture and the curse of censorship.
