PROJECT BRIEF >>>>
The goal of the project is to visually represent researched data and information on a chosen subject. The subject can be anything that can be measured statistically. The visual representations are divided into three categorized solutions: typographic based, image-based, and non-computer based posters. The concept I explored is the Kansas City School Missouri District (a failing inner-city school district) in comparison to nearby districts. I gathered all the information from The Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education’s website (mcds.dese. mo.gov) which I believe to be an accurate source of information about Missouri schools.
RESEARCH >>>> COLLECTING DATA
Initially, I looked at many different sources for information about the Kansas City Missouri School District. Most the facts varied from source to source. For this project I feel it’s important to use consistent and accurate facts, so I settled on the idea of finding and using one reputable site for all of my information. I found The Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education’s website (mcds.dese.mo.gov)
BRAINSTORMING >>>>
HEADLINES, WORDLIST & SKETCHES
I started building ideas for my concept by creating a list of words associated with my subject. This exercise “gets the juices flowing” and is a useful creative reference tool throughout the process. I also created a list of possible ideas for headlines, or titles for my posters, and quick pencil sketches to get my visual concepts out before hopping on the computer.
ROUND 1 >>>>
EXPLORING CONCEPTS
For this part of the process the goal is to come up with as many visual concepts for my subject as possible. I push myself to think of ideas that really push the overall concept of the subject. The more posters I create at the this part of the process, the more ideas I have to pull from later.

TIGHTENING CONCEPTS
At this stage I’m taking the most successful ideas from my exploration posters and tightening the concepts. I’m also focusing on making sure I am showing clear hierarchy, organization of information, and deciding on which concepts work best for my three categorized solutions: typographic based, imagebased, and non-computer based posters.

ROUND 3 >>>> REFINING CONCEPTS
At this point in the process I have narrowed down my concepts, chosen the headlines, and decided on two posters that work best for each category. The next step is to refine these concepts by tweeking certain elements and addressing any unresolved issues with the concepts before deciding on my final posters.
