Becoming Everything You Are:
ANSWERING THE CALL FOR SERVICE TO NATION
“Thank you for your service.” We say this to people who have served and are still serving. We say this to their families. It is an all-encompassing, open-ended expression of gratitude for a reason. We cannot begin to encapsulate all the ways those in the military and its employ protect us on land, in the air, at sea, and in space. The list is so vast, and ever-expanding.
All of it touches your ability to become everything you are as a human being living in this nation. There’s a new frontier that needs protection, oversight, and demands equality now. The Metaverse. It exists to facilitate mundane daily life of the ordinary citizen and protect the enormity of space exploration.
The military is poised to shape, lead, even command the Metaverse. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our seasoned and next-generation military leaders to take “Thank you for your service” into the Metaverse.

The theme for our dinner is “Answering the Call for Service to Our Nation”. The BEYA Stars and Stripes Committee in partnership with leaders from the Department of Defense, industry, and academia continue to work diligently to provide our nation with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) talent. The opportunities for youth in STEM have never been greater. History has shown us that the support of committed educators, outstanding volunteers, and most importantly parents are the keys to youth success in STEM. It is the BEYA Stars & Stripes mission to help create the environment to motivate, encourage and help youth to pursue a STEM education.
BEYA Stars and Stripes rests on the shoulders of committed Senior Executives who volunteer their time and energy. The central piece of our efforts is the Pre-Dinner Mentoring led by Secretary Craig Crenshaw, Virginia State Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs. Over the last 10 years 1250 active-duty Flags, Generals and Senior Executive Service (SES) have mentored 6,787 youth prior to our dinner/awards event. This year will be no exception. At 1600 on Friday, February 10, Secretary Crenshaw and his team will mentor over 600 students at the Gaylord Resort in National Harbor, Maryland. Over 140 Active Flags, Generals and SES personnel have volunteered to participate, thereby providing an engaging experience for our youth. The Pre-Dinner Mentoring is looking at states outside the Mid-Atlantic region to include Ohio and Alabama to expand our reach in 2024.
SES Jesse McCurdy (Ret.) leads our year-round mentoring utilizing retired Flags, Generals and SES personnel. Our partners include the top-rated high schools in the nation, according to US News and World Report. We are finding that effort to become even more promising as we and youth learn to explore opportunities and receive mentorship from some of the most accomplished executives in the government. These executives bring experience from all the Services and the National Security Agency.
Finally, our BEYA Stars and Stripes Student ambassadors have taken the lead for our BEYA Career Day. The BEYA Career Day is led by LTG Bruce Crawford (Ret.). 2022 presenters include leaders like Mr. Wayne Young, Vice President at Jacksonville Electric Authority, one of the largest public utilities in the nation and Dr. Kyla McMullen, computer science Associate Professor. The 2023 cohort of students has an average GPA of 4.1 and includes National Honor Society members, teen entrepreneurs, and students from 4 states. This year, the newly formed BEYA Stars and Stripes Scholarship program will provide additional funding for Career Day student ambassadors and high achieving STEM/HBCU students to continue their higher education.
This year, we are honored to have the United States Army as our featured service. We are especially proud to have the Honorable Secretary Christine Wormuth, USA attend as well as being a keynote speaker for our awards event.
Congratulations to our BEYA Stars and Stripes 2023 Military awardees. You are role models and motivators for our future leaders.
wOn behalf of Dr. Tyrone Taborn and Career Communications Group, Stars and Stripes Founders, and our military and corporate sponsors, we are most grateful to have your participation. We will make it an impactful experience for you — The BEYA 365 Experience.
Sincerely,
Tyrone D. Taborn Chairman & CEO VADM Anthony L. Winns, USN (Ret) National Chairman of BEYA Stars and Stripes CommitteeFebruary 9, 2023

Greg Hayes Chairman and CEO Raytheon TechnologiesDistinguished guests and honorees,
We cannot dare to dream, nor will we realize hopes for a safer tomorrow, without encouraging and investing in future generations of leaders. Leadership requires many skills and qualities, and chief among them is the ability to inspire and uplift those around you. Tonight, we gather in celebration of those who have gone above and beyond as leaders. They have embraced their duty as teachers, mentors and champions of the next changemakers.
Our innovations, and thereby our security and prosperity, will only be as strong as those who contribute to them – and therein lies the strength of equity, diversity and inclusion. Tonight’s honorees have advanced science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through their commitment to diversity and our collective future.
The work of equity and representation is never done, and no one entity can do it alone. Together with the United States Army, The Boeing Company is pleased to sponsor the 18th annual Stars and Stripes Dinner. We are proud to support U.S. servicemembers and the mission of BEYA Stars and Stripes.
Thank you for joining us this evening. To our honorees: thank you for the example you have set as community leaders and servicemembers. Your pursuits have made the discipline of STEM – and our nation – better.
Sincerely,
Theodore (Ted) Colbert III President and Chief Executive Officer Defense, Space & Security The Boeing CompanyDear Friends and Colleagues,
