Kulanu - All of Us. Together. Core Values and Guiding Principles
Strategic Plan
Our organization continues to work towards its three strategic goals:
February 2015
•
Identifying new and enhanced revenue sources. We are looking at ways to maximize revenue of existing programs. We continue to look at ways to expand and enhance select programs and services, and we are in the process of evaluating new sources of revenue.
•
Becoming a “provider of choice.” We will develop and sustain cutting edge technology for operational support; and to elevate and sustain high quality services and care. We will elevate and sustain high quality buildings and amenities, develop a culture of innovation and excellence, and create an adaptable business model.
•
Becoming an “employer of choice.” It is our plan to update our talent management. We also plan to establish professional development opportunities for staff and revise the performance review process. Another key goal is to strengthen employer/manager and leadership/staff relationships. Watch this column for future updates.

LIVE the Core Concepts! It’s not enough to know what the Core Values of your company are: you have to live them, too! Notice where they are being put into action around you every day. Who do you know who is LIVing the Core Concepts? Send us the name of an employee you noticed putting one of these concepts into practice and we will honor them in an upcoming Personnelly Speaking! Example: The staff of the Rubenstein Family Kosher Oasis does not accept tips! However, they have a tzedakah* box at the front counter. When guests leave a tip on the table, you will see the servers putting the tips in that box, not pocketing the tips. The tips then go to the Employee Annual Gift Fund, which is used for the gift cards we receive every December. Donations received from all three residences during the year are also combined in this fund. So thank you to the servers of the Rubenstein Family Kosher Oasis, who share their tips with all of us! LIVE The Core Concepts! Leadership Integrity Vision Excellence Tradition Compassion Community *tzedakah, which translates to righteousness or justice, is a Jewish or Hebrew term that, in today’s society, is often used to mean charitable giving.

Clip ‘n Save: Resident Dietary Guidelines Please communicate to all staff in your department about the dangers of giving food to our residents if you do not know their specific dietary needs. If any staff member, visitor or volunteer does not know a resident’s dietary needs, they should not give them any food, snacks, etc. While this gesture is meant with good intention, it can really hurt those we are here to nurture and protect. We have residents with dementia who cannot consume food by mouth, yet this practice continues to happen on a regular basis. Dietary needs of residents can change daily; please check with the nursing staff to ensure the correct diet is being followed. Food given to residents who cannot swallow properly can cause food particles to drop into lungs, cause infection and potentially death. Diabetic residents on antibiotics can react slightly to even the smallest amount of sugar and go into an unresponsive state. Residents who need thickened liquids who instead are given regular liquids can easily choke and suffocate. We have identified residents who cannot have any food or liquid by mouth with a purple bracelet on their wrist. The bracelet means “Nothing by Mouth (NPO)”; purple is designated the universal color. Please communicate this information by reminding your staff, adding it to monthly in-services or by any means necessary. If you are unaware of a resident’s dietary needs, please do not serve food or snacks. For some it can be a matter of life and death.
Tu B’Shevat 101 Tu B’Shevat is a holiday intimately connected to the agricultural cycle of the Land of Israel. The 15th day of the Jewish month of Shevat is the New Year of Trees. Today, this holiday is often celebrated by planting saplings and also by participating in a seder-meal that echoes the Passover seder, in which the produce of trees, including fruits and nuts, are eaten. Tu B’Shevat links Jews with the land of Israel and is a Jewish celebration of the environment. When the Temple stood in Jerusalem, Tu B’Shevat served as the day on which farmers offered the first fruits of the trees they planted, after the trees had turned four years old. The following Tu B’Shevat signified when the farmers were allowed to begin making use of the produce of the trees they planted, whether for personal or economic reasons. In the late 19th century, Tu B’Shevat was rediscovered as a celebration that links the Jews with their land. The holiday became one of re-dedication to the ecology of the denuded land, with the planting of trees taking center stage in the celebration. Jews outside of Israel contribute money to plant trees there. With the increasing concern for the environment, Tu B’Shevat has taken on an additional meaning as a day on which Jews can express and act on their concern for the ecological well-being of the world in which we live. This has led to the rediscovery of the Tu B’Shevat seder, now transformed into a celebration of G-d’s bounty and the environment. http://www.myjewishlearning.org
Can I Quote You On That? We are in need of new quotes to use on our websites! If you have something you would like to say about living or working at Chai Point, Jewish Home and Care Center or Sarah Chudnow Community, whether about the experience of living and working here, the food, the activities, or just in general, we want to hear from you. Please email comments to rloss@jewishseniorliving.org or visit the Mar/Com office on the B level of Chai Point. You will find a form there to fill out. Quotes will be used on different pages throughout the websites, and changed periodically. PERSONNELLY SPEAKING | FEBRUARY 2015 | 3

Use these tips to take action in lowering your risk for heart disease and heart attack. • Ask your doctor or nurse how to maintain a healthy weight and how to prevent and control high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes. • If you smoke, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW to help you quit. • Limit alcohol. • Make healthy food choices for meals and snacks. Grab a healthy snack on the go. • Be active. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park farther away and walk. • Know the symptoms of a heart attack.
