espite its location in the heart of Ulster County, SUNY New Paltz is a magnet for growth throughout the whole Hudson Valley. There are countless ways for Dutchess County businesses in particular to take advantage of New Paltz’s presence in our region, and at the April Contact Breakfast, college President Donald Christian will deliver a keynote address focusing on just that.

Christian was appointed the eighth President at the State University of New York at New Paltz, effective June 16, 2011. He served as Interim President from July 2010 until his appointment as President.

Prior to his time in the Office of the President, Christian served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the College for the 2009-2010 academic year.

As President, Christian is responsible for all aspects of campus academic and administrative operations, including education, research, faculty recruitment and development. Working in collaboration with internal and external constituencies,

the president provides overall leadership and guidance for the College, including the leading of discussions and processes to identify attainable institutional goals.

The president represents the ChrIsTIAN campus’ interests within the SUNY system, with local and state-elected officials and with the surrounding communities.

here are always familiar faces at the Chamber, and often times just as many unfamiliar faces. If you are a regular attendee at events, you will likely recognize a good portion of the people in the room -- you may even know most of their names. Put yourself in the shoes of a new member attending an event for the first time, a young professional, someone new to the area or maybe just a person with a reserved personality. Attending a Chamber event isn’t always comfortable for everyone and it can be extremely intimidating for newbies.

At the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, we pride ourselves in making our events different; not only business-friendly, but people-friendly too. Our Chamber staff does its very best to receive new members, guests, first-time attendees and, of course, our valued general membership. However, it isn’t always easy. With almost 2,000

Women gather, walk in solidarity

H

undreds of women (and a few men) gathered on International Women’s Day to celebrate and help educate people about the plight of women in other countries. The keynote speaker was Dr. Carol Ann Malizia and the youth speaker was Shafari Pinak, a Highland High School senior. Following entertainment and speeches, the women walked across the Walkway Over the Hudson. We look forward to seeing you next year on March 8.

or International Women’s Day 2012, 500 custom made purple scarves were commissioned by the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Women’s Leadership Alliance from Women’s Work, a fair trade retail store located in Poughkeepsie.

ransig and her family, the scarves were specially made for International Women’s Day. In addition to their beauty, the scarves have the added value of being produced using fair trade principles.

On a day which celebrated women’s achievements, the act of

buying fair trade scarves not only spoke well of those who participated in the walk and acknowledged the talents of the artisans, but also had a direct financial effect on the lives of the weavers in Ecuador.

This one purchase of scarves provided the equivalent of one year’s salary for each artisan.

ince we never had a winter, I’ve been thinking a lot about spring. Spring might be my favorite season in the Hudson Valley – it’s the perfect time to dust off the golf clubs, get out in the garden, dine al fresco, take a stroll over the Walkway, and just generally enjoy the great outdoors.

Sometimes as business owners in Dutchess County, we forget that one of our greatest economic resources is the sheer beauty of our hometown. People want to come here, are lining up to eat in our restaurants and shop in our boutiques, and at the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, we want to help our members take full advantage.

So many of our upcoming events are focused on doing just that. Right here in the Hudson Valley, we grow some of the finest, freshest food in the country, and thanks in part to the Culinary Institute of America we grow some of the finest chefs too! When you put those two elements together, you get the Breakfast of Champions, returning to the MidHudson Civic Center on the

morning of June 20. All of the best restaurants in the region will be offering up samples of their signature dishes, so make sure to wake up early and bring your appetite.

Not long after the Breakfast of Champions it’s time for the Balloon Festival. I truly feel that nothing helps people get a better Dutchess County experience than our annual Balloon Festival, where patrons can experience not only some of the wonderful landmarks we have to offer, but also learn about some great local businesses, restaurants, and more while spending time with friends and family.

Redesigning your infrastructure

Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union (HVFCU) Middletown Branch Manager Jean Sexton has been recognized by the Middletown Recreation Commission for her dedication and commitment to the City of Middletown. Sexton, a life-long Orange County resident, has been with HVFCU since 2000, and the manager of their Middletown Branch since its opening in May of 2007. She has donated her time and talents to such local nonprofits as the Middletown Cares Coalition, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Pathstone, and Literacy Orange, in addition to participating at various events that support youth, health, and financial wellness across the greater Middletown community.

Poughkeepsie resident Susanne O’Neil has been hired to serve as Walkway Over the Hudson’s new Volunteer and Special Project Coordinator.

O’Neil will manage all volunteer activities as well as design and seek funding for outreach projects for the Poughkeepsie-based nonprofit organization. One of her priorities will be to recruit, train, and manage Walkway’s nearly 100 volunteers and Ambassadors, who serve as tour guides, greeters, and support Park staff.

“Susanne brings a fantastic set of skills and a great deal of related experience to Walkway Over the Hudson. We will put her many talents to good use,” said Walkway Executive Director Elizabeth Waldstein-Hart. “On top of her

professional experience, she’s a board member and a race director for the Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club and serves on the Dutchess County Youth Bureau’s Board of Directors.”

The Mount Beacon Incline Railway Restoration Society has selected Michael Colarusso as its President and Chief Executive Officer. Colarusso, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who served as the Society’s Chief Operating Officer for the last two years, replaces Anne Lynch, who is staying on as vice president. Lynch called the change another step forward for the organization. “Mike was absolutely the right choice for us as we move ahead,” she said. “He’s been instrumental to our recent successes and I know that he’ll bring us even closer to our goal.”

Colarusso noted the Society’s significant progress during Lynch’s four-year tenure. “Anne has taken us to new levels. Under her leadership, we tripled our membership and revenue, established an operating endowment, completed market and economic feasibility studies, identified potential contractors and service providers for the reconstruction, and developed a great restoration concept that will serve us extremely well going forward. Thanks to her, we have an excellent sense of what the railway will cost and the public benefit it will provide. I have some big shoes to fill, and I’m grateful that Anne remains part of our leadership team. We work extremely well together.”

This year, the club is honoring Chris Silva, who has been Executive Director of the Bardavon 1869 Opera House since 1994. Through his efforts, Chris has significantly enhanced the value of arts and entertainment in the Hudson Valley.

ince 1973, The Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse has been working locally to reduce and hopefully eventually eradicate all instances of child abuse in Dutchess County. Each year, The Center serves more than 13,000 abused and at-risk children while also providing support and education services to over 3,000 adults while standing as the only agency in Dutchess County to provide sexual-abuse prevention training. Everything they do serves their dual mission to both help abused children and educate adults to prevent future abuse.

Tell us a little about Carol L’Heureux I’ve been in banking for 25 years and have worked in many various departments. I was a Branch Manager for many years until I took on a new opportunity with Mahopac National Bank as the Branch Administrator. I have been in this role for four years. I feel this has truly been my most accomplished position. I have the opportunity to work with the best managers developing them in their role. I also have the opportunity to get to know the business clients and the communities we serve.

How did your involvement in LD help you in your personal and professional life?

Leadership Dutchess taught me how to have more confidence in a leader-

ship role where I can lead by example and always know that I would never ask anyone to do anything I would not do myself. It has also allowed me to not be hesitate to open doors and take changes with my career and people I care about.

Are you or have you been on any boards since you graduated?

Although I am not currently serving on any boards, I was a board member for a local Rotary club and have been an long time advocate for many charitable organizations and took a lead role for organizing various charity events that we have at the bank.

What was your favorite experience from Leadership Dutchess?

My favorite experience was all of the wonderful people I have met and continue to be friends with a few of my classmates. We will always hold a special bond and remember our experiences that we shared.
