here are always familiar faces at the Chamber, and often times just as many unfamiliar faces. If you are a regular attendee at events, you will likely recognize a good portion of the people in the room -- you may even know most of their names. Put yourself in the shoes of a new member attending an event for the first time, a young professional, someone new to the area or maybe just a person with a reserved personality. Attending a Chamber event isn’t always comfortable for everyone and it can be extremely intimidating for newbies. At the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, we pride ourselves in making our events different; not only business-friendly, but people-friendly too. Our Chamber staff does its very best to receive new members, guests, first-time attendees and, of course, our valued general membership. However, it isn’t always easy. With almost 2,000

members of the Chamber, and an employee-multiplying factor, the Chamber staff meets hundreds of new people each and every day. As you can imagine it isn’t easy to remember all names, but you can almost bet they will remember your face. We at the Chamber understand it isn’t always easy for people to attend our events and fit right in, so we do our best to reach out and make attendees feel at ease. It also may not be physically possible for the Chamber staff to personally greet each person at events, so the key belongs to our Chamber Ambassador Committee. These member volunteers offer welcome guidance through the process of being a new member, and they always greet you with a smile. If you’re a tenured member, we can always use your help to improve the image of the Chamber, and an integral part of that image is how people feel at our events. Reach out to the new

or International Women’s Day 2012, 500 custom made purple scarves were commissioned by the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Women’s Leadership Alliance from Women’s Work, a fair trade retail store located in Poughkeepsie. Made in Ecuador by Estela Sa-
ransig and her family, the scarves were specially made for International Women’s Day. In addition to their beauty, the scarves have the added value of being produced using fair trade principles. On a day which celebrated women’s achievements, the act of
buying fair trade scarves not only spoke well of those who participated in the walk and acknowledged the talents of the artisans, but also had a direct financial effect on the lives of the weavers in Ecuador. This one purchase of scarves provided the equivalent of one year’s salary for each artisan.

ince we never had a winter, I’ve been thinking a lot about spring. Spring might be my favorite season in the Hudson Valley – it’s the perfect time to dust off the golf clubs, get out in the garden, dine al fresco, take a stroll over the Walkway, and just generally enjoy the great outdoors. Sometimes as business owners in Dutchess County, we forget that one of our greatest economic resources is the sheer beauty of our hometown. People want to come here, are lining up to eat in our restaurants and shop in our boutiques, and at the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, we want to help our members take full advantage. So many of our upcoming events are focused on doing just that. Right here in the Hudson Valley, we grow some of the finest, freshest food in the country, and thanks in part to the Culinary Institute of America we grow some of the finest chefs too! When you put those two elements together, you get the Breakfast of Champions, returning to the MidHudson Civic Center on the

morning of June 20. All of the best restaurants in the region will be offering up samples of their signature dishes, so make sure to wake up early and bring your appetite. Not long after the Breakfast of Champions it’s time for the Balloon Festival. I truly feel that nothing helps people get a better Dutchess County experience than our annual Balloon Festival, where patrons can experience not only some of the wonderful landmarks we have to offer, but also learn about some great local businesses, restaurants, and more while spending time with friends and family. Look for more information on these and other events coming soon. I’m so happy that spring has sprung! Hopefully you are too, and I can’t wait to see you out and about thinking local first right alongside me.

MI is the world’s leading not-for-profit membership association for the project management profession, with more than 600,000 members and credential holders in more than 185 countries. PMI’s fundamental goal is to foster greater recognition and acceptance of project management’s successful role in governments, organizations, academia and industries. The PMI Hudson Valley Chapter advances this objective on a local level and provides a forum for practitioners through education, professional development, volunteerism, and
networking. Project management is defined as the application of skills and techniques to execute projects effectively and efficiently. It is a strategic competency for organizations, enabling them to tie project results to business goals — and thus, better compete in their markets. Certified Project Managers are in high-demand. The Project Management Professional certification (PMP) is one of PMI’s most sought after certifications and represents an understanding of nine key business areas. Specifically, the PMI Hudson
Valley Chapter objectives are to: • Encourage and facilitate education, certification, and professionalism in project management • Disseminate information within the Hudson Valley regarding developments in project management • Promote formal project management principles and techniques within local businesses, universities and professional associations • Support and enhance the project management profession by developing quality programs based on local project manager needs • Create and deliver an edu-

Get involved with the Hudson Valley Chapter of PMI by volunteering. The first step is to come to one of its monthly meetings (you do not need to be a member to
attend) or visit its website - www. pmihvc.org. Year after year, the Hudson Valley Chapter of PMI works to create new programs and improve existing ones for the benefit of its members and the community. For them to continue this progress, it is very important that they persist in having individuals donate their skills and valuable time. If you are interested in learning new skills, earning credit towards certification, meeting new people, or just giving back to the community, volunteer to get involved in the chapter.

Redesigning your infrastructure
Distance doesn’t matter. IT needs to enable the way business needs to be conducted. Employees need and want to be able to collaborate and share data from anywhere to anywhere, so be prepared with the proper equipment or systems in place to make that happen. Business never stops. You can’t afford to not be able to conduct business at any time so it’s
important to make sure your redesign includes the ability to have your business up and running if disaster or data loss occurs. Centralized applications and data. If your workforce is spread out across states, counties or multiple offices in one region, having all of the tools that help them get the job done easily accessible and easier to manage for your IT staff will keep your business running more efficiently. MEMBER NEWSLINE News... Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union (HVFCU) Middletown Branch Manager Jean Sexton has been recognized by the Middletown Recreation Commission for her dedication and commitment to the City of Middletown. Sexton, a life-long Orange County resident, has been with HVFCU since 2000, and the manager of their Middletown Branch since its opening in May of 2007. She has donated her time and talents to such local nonprofits as the Middletown Cares Coalition, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Pathstone, and Literacy Orange, in addition to participating at various events that support youth, health, and financial wellness across the greater Middletown community. “We’re very proud of Jean’s accomplishments,” said her supervisor, Area Retail Manager John Carola. “Jean embodies one of HVFCU’s strongest hallmarksservice to our community. We’re pleased the Recreation Commission chose to honor her this year at their Annual Dinner Meeting.”
Poughkeepsie resident Susanne O’Neil has been hired to serve as Walkway Over the Hudson’s new Volunteer and Special Project Coordinator. O’Neil will manage all volunteer activities as well as design and seek funding for outreach projects for the Poughkeepsie-based nonprofit organization. One of her priorities will be to recruit, train, and manage Walkway’s nearly 100 volunteers and Ambassadors, who serve as tour guides, greeters, and support Park staff. “Susanne brings a fantastic set of skills and a great deal of related experience to Walkway Over the Hudson. We will put her many talents to good use,” said Walkway Executive Director Elizabeth Waldstein-Hart. “On top of her
professional experience, she’s a board member and a race director for the Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club and serves on the Dutchess County Youth Bureau’s Board of Directors.”
Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union (HVFCU) is proud to announce that its staff of ten Mortgage Loan Officers, including Nancy Lilly-Hamilton, Rob Dominguez, Chris Rosenbergen, Matt Ohrvall, Maryann Fuller and Tom Henry recently completed the Certified Mortgage Planning Specialist (CMPS) certification from the CMPS Institute. These five loan officers serve HVFCU’s Dutchess County members through full-service branches in Poughkeepsie, Hyde Park, Pleasant Valley, Beacon, Wappingers Falls, Fishkill, and Hopewell Junction. CMPS professionals have demonstrated financial knowledge and expertise regarding the tax and financial planning implications of various mortgage and real estate investment strategies. The certification is unique; giving the Loan Officers the knowledge to better advise members on their mortgage, real estate equity, and life planning needs and goals. Recognized for its preeminence within the industry, the CMPS curriculum represents the core knowledge expected of residential mortgage advisors, regardless of the diversity of specializations within the industry.

The Mount Beacon Incline Railway Restoration Society has selected Michael Colarusso as its President and Chief Executive Officer. Colarusso, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who served as the Society’s Chief Operating Officer for the last two years, replaces Anne Lynch, who is staying on as vice president. Lynch called the change another step forward for the organization. “Mike was absolutely the right choice for us as we move ahead,” she said. “He’s been instrumental to our recent successes and I know that he’ll bring us even closer to our goal.” Colarusso noted the Society’s significant progress during Lynch’s four-year tenure. “Anne has taken us to new levels. Under her leadership, we tripled our membership and revenue, established an operating endowment, completed market and economic feasibility studies, identified potential contractors and service providers for the reconstruction, and developed a great restoration concept that will serve us extremely well going forward. Thanks to her, we have an excellent sense of what the railway will cost and the public benefit it will provide. I have some big shoes to fill, and I’m grateful that Anne remains part of our leadership team. We work extremely well together.” The Chazen Companies, a leading provider of engineering, land surveying, environmental, planning, and landscape architecture services, announced that Danielle Marxer has joined the firm as the new Director of Business Development and Marketing. Submitted by Tina Walz, M&T Bank Leadership Dutchess Class 2003
Tell us a little about Carol L’Heureux I’ve been in banking for 25 years and have worked in many various departments. I was a Branch Manager for many years until I took on a new opportunity with Mahopac National Bank as the Branch Administrator. I have been in this role for four years. I feel this has truly been my most accomplished position. I have the opportunity to work with the best managers developing them in their role. I also have the opportunity to get to know the business clients and the communities we serve.
How did your involvement in LD help you in your personal and professional life? Leadership Dutchess taught me how to have more confidence in a leader-
ship role where I can lead by example and always know that I would never ask anyone to do anything I would not do myself. It has also allowed me to not be hesitate to open doors and take changes with my career and people I care about.
Are you or have you been on any boards since you graduated? Although I am not currently serving on any boards, I was a board member for a local Rotary club and have been an long time advocate for many charitable organizations and took a lead role for organizing various charity events that we have at the bank.
What was your favorite experience from Leadership Dutchess? My favorite experience was all of the wonderful people I have met and continue to be friends with a few of my classmates. We will always hold a special bond and remember our experiences that we shared.
