Richter new Director of Membership
D by Charles S. North Did you know that this year marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of democracy here in Dutchess County? In honor of such a historic occasion, it’s a pleasure to partner with Dutchess County Tourism and Dutchess County Government (as well as many other corporate supporters, volunteers and not-forprofit organizations) to hold Dutchess Heritage Days throughout this year. If you missed the big announcement about the event a couple of months back, let me fill you in. In honor of Dutchess County’s democratic anniversary and the significant role we played in New York becoming part of the Union in the 1700s, we’re hosting a deep roster of community events to help everyone get into the spirit! Headlining Heritage Days is the Chamber’s annual Balloon Festival, this year bigger and better than ever. There will be launches throughout the area beginning in the evening on Friday, July 5, and culminating in our signature
early morning launches over the Hudson River on Saturday, July 6 and Sunday, July 7. This year, we’re even bringing back a special “moon glow” night launch! In addition to the Balloon Festival, residents can watch and even participate in a great parade down Poughkeepsie’s Main Street on that Saturday morning. For people who want to be more active, there will be a 5K run and a swim across the Hudson as well. Whatever your preferred way to celebrate, there will be something for you. More information about Dutchess Heritage Days, including many other smaller events like historical lectures and re-enactments, is being released constantly. Keep checking dcrcoc.org for the latest information, and I can’t wait to see you out and about this summer. Sincerely,
Charles S. North President & CEO

Beware low-cost website hosting deals change hosting providers, in some cases you may not be able to take your design that you’ve been using with you. This is a serious factor to consider, especially if you are a start up and you based any other corporate branded material off your site. Customization may be what you get in name only. You may be able to choose colors and layout, but if you’re looking to add the Facebook or LinkedIn buttons that will either cost you extra or won’t be available at all. You can also kiss goodbye things like an eye-catching scrolling banner or a plug-in that translates your content into another language. A good website works for a business by keeping you competitive on search engines rankings and generating new leads. Websites built by online site builders are very nonsearch engine friendly. If your site

is essentially built by a robot, how will it know what keywords are important for search engine optimization or add alternative tags to your photos? You can also guarantee that with a site like this, analytics aren’t in place to give you a better understanding of the traffic you’re getting to your site and why you’re getting it. Consider a website like any other asset of your business. In the end, cheap and easy isn’t all it’s cracked up to be when it comes to the website for your business, but then again, there are very few things in life or in business where that works out well. here are a variety of wellknown hosting companies that offer businesses who are looking to develop a web presence a deal on creating a brand new website for next to nothing. With the purchase of a hosting plan they offer a do-it-yourself website for free or at a low monthly cost. Such deals promise expanded reach to prospective clients and new business. It really does make you sit and wonder, why would anyone want to spend the time or money on finding a reputable web developer when you could have a website up and running in a matter of minutes, but what are you really getting when you sign up for something like this? For one, you are also getting a web hosting package with whatever company you sign up with, which could have an additional monthly fee and will probably increase over time. What they also don’t tell you is that if at any point you decide the fees are too high and you want to

Seminar will focus on improving cash flow
T
his month’s Business Education Seminar will feature Ken Mann of Freedom Financial Solutions discussing how “Cash Is King.” According to Mann, cash is the heartbeat of your business and, when managed well, keeps your company healthy and strong. Cash flow simply means the movement of cash into and out of your business. While that sounds MANN simple, poor cash flow management is causing more business failures today than ever before. At this seminar, Mann will teach attendees principles for managing, tracking, projecting and improving a business’s cash flow. Mann is an IRS Registered
Tax Return Preparer and an Intuit Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor. As a profit and growth expert, he helps small business owners with three primary goals: reducing taxes, increasing profits and maximizing cash flow so they will have money in the bank when they need it. event The will take place at the Chamber on Thursday, April
25 from 7:30-9 a.m. It is complimentary for both members and non-members, and breakfast will be provided. You must register by going to dcrcoc.org or calling 845-454-1700 ext. 1000. The Business Education Seminar is sponsored by Gellert & Klein, P.C.

Firm specializes in health care, gives back to community
I
seman Cunningham Riester & Hyde, LLP was founded in Albany in 1991 by Bob Iseman, Mike Cunningham, Fred Riester, and Carol Hyde. The Poughkeepsie office was opened in 2002 when Rick Mitchell joined the firm as a partner. Today the firm is comprised of 11 partners and 9 associates, including the newest member of the team, David Wise, who joined the firm as a partner in the Poughkeepsie office in January this year. The firm has an active health care practice, and three partners of the firm – Bob Iseman, Carol Hyde and Rich Frankel – were each recently named a 2013 Top Rated Lawyer in Healthcare by American Lawyer Media and Martindale-Hubbell. Bob, Carol and Rich – along with partner
MEMBER SPOTlIGHT Mike Cunningham – have also received an AV Preeminent® rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the highest rating in legal ability and ethical standards based solely on peer review. The firm has also been recognized for its excellence and quality service by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Lawyers. ICRH offers a wide range of services in areas other than
health care, including commercial and personal injury litigation, corporate, labor and employment, commercial real estate, bankruptcy, and insurance defense. The firm represents a variety of clients, from individuals to Fortune 500 companies, including heath care systems and services, banks, manufacturers, and not-for-profit corporations. The firm’s approach to providing legal services and advice is unique, in that clients are given directive advice, not just what their options are in a given situation. In other words, ICRH’s lawyers will tell clients exactly what they would do in the same circumstances, and why. While the firm’s attorneys always attempt to settle disputes cooperatively in order to avoid costly courtroom proceedings, they are prepared
and have the experience to aggressively pursue litigation when necessary. ICRH offers the professionalism and innovation of a large firm, while maintaining the personal service and understanding that is only available at a small
firm. ICRH and its attorneys believe in giving back to their communities. The firm has given thousands of dollars in donations to local charities, and many of its partners and employees have taken leadership roles in community programs. One of the firm’s associates, Omer Gil, is the president of Rebuilding Together Dutchess County, and recently started a new not-forprofit program, The Poughkeepsie Basketball Project, designed to help motivate students to participate in school and give back to their community. ICRH’s offices in Albany and Poughkeepsie allow it to efficiently service clients throughout New York State. For more information, visit the firm’s website at www.icrh.com.
Positive outlook will help you achieve goals by dan danieluc nasM-Cpt d&d health and fitness llC
W
hen we talk about achieving any kind of goals, we should talk about motivation, determination, focus, self-control and discipline. Motivation is literally the desire to do things. It’s the crucial element in setting and attaining goals. So figure out what you want, power through the pain period, and start being who you want to be.
Goals provide focus: With no guiding vision or plan, people tend to drift. Goals provide a measuring stick for progress. Goals enhance productivity. They bolster self-esteem. And most of all, goals increase commitment, so you’re more likely to achieve whatever you set out to conquer. Visualize yourself having achieved each of your goals. The more real you can make your visualization, the better. Get organized. When you are
organized, you will feel better about your ability to reach your goals. Having information scattered in too many places makes you feel out of control and undermines motivation. Set up a filing system, set aside your workout clothes. Decide for yourself why you want to exercise. An excellent reason is to maintain your good health, functional fitness, and independence. Make a commitment to exercise on a regular basis. Set aside a certain amount of time every day and stick
to it! Be faithful to your commitment. When you stay fit, you burn more calories even when you are at rest. Plus, being fit gives you the energy to be more physically active and exercise harder and more efficiently. Remember, your comfort range changes daily; so don’t get discouraged if you can’t do the same amount of exercise as the day before. Instead of focusing on what you can’t do, think about what you can. Positive thoughts are known to produce results.

Leadership Dutchess:
The class is working on their fundraising and community service projects – a requirement of each Leadership Dutchess class. By executing each of these tasks, much of the leadership skills that are taught throughout the course are brought together, utilized and understood. Save the date – Vegas Night,
a fundraiser by the Leadership Dutchess Class of 2013, will be held on June 6 at The Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel and Conference Center. Sponsorship packages are available. Please contact Erin Blabac at eblabac@VDDW.com to find out how you or your business can support the cause. For this year’s community service project, The Leadership Dutchess Committee chose Rainbow’s End Child Development Center, Inc., in Salt Point. Activities will include painting, building vegetable gardens, creating a rain-
bow mural and more. The Leadership Dutchess team also hopes to give Rainbow’s End a special gift by the time the project is complete. The class welcomes anyone who would like to help – and are especially looking for handymen and women with the expertise in renovation projects. Please contact me if you would like to lend a hand.
