hamber members, please check your mailboxes – you should have received the Chamber’s new business directory by now. The streamlined directory, less than half the size of previous versions, will now be published twice a year to keep Hudson Valley shoppers up-to-date on the latest and greatest. Keep a copy in your car, at work, with your shopping bags or wherever else you might want to Think Local First. Every single business in the directory is a local business. That means that even though there are chains and “brand names” represented, they all believe in keeping money spent here in the Hudson Valley involved in the Hudson

Valley economy. Businesses in the directory don’t ship all their profit back to corporate headquarters, they reinvest it in Red Hook, Beacon and everywhere in between. Maybe it’s through hiring additional workers or making a donation in support of a local charity. Whatever they do, the businesses we highlight care about the community and give back. They’re worthy of your support.

Whenever you have the occasion, please continue to Think Local First and support the businesses that support us all. You’ll not only get a top-notch product or service, but you’ll be working with a neighbor, someone you can actually get on the phone when you need them. Maybe you’ll even make a new friend! As our friend Charlie likes to say, we all have a choice where we spend our money. So make the right choice, and Think Local First. I hope the new business directory helps you do just that. And if you are not a member, we can help with that too. Just call the Chamber offices and let them know you are interested in being in the next business directory.

A
s a member of the Hudson River Valley community, I believe it’s extremely important that we foster the growth and development of the next generation. At the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, we’ve advanced that mission through our Workforce Development Center, which helps youth and young adults find jobs, internships, or complete school; through The Chamber Foundation, which runs the signature Leadership Dutchess and Youth Leadership programs; and by annually honoring the top forty people under the age of 40 with Shaker Awards. I hope you’ll be able to join us on Tuesday, April 22 as we gather together to salute this year’s Forty Under 40. The evening begins with a cocktail reception at the Poughkeepsie Grand prior to the awards ceremony at The Bardavon 1869 Opera House and it is a wonderful, upscale evening out, a great chance to network and an opportunity to prove you
care about our future and what the Hudson Valley becomes. So much of the future growth potential of our region depends on encouraging the next generation of leaders to stay here, raise a family here and have a vested interest in the success of the area. Supporting the Forty Under 40 is a great place to start. Get your tickets now by logging on to dcrcoc. org/40under40. And if you’re interested in maybe being one of the movers and shakers in the future, being part of those leadership programs I mentioned earlier is a great place to start. Both Leadership Dutchess (for professionals) and Youth Leadership (for high school sophomores and juniors) are currently accepting applications. I invite you to visit ChamberFDN.org for more information.

We’ve reviewed in the past a variety of hardware solutions that could be implemented, and we may have touched on some antivirus software solutions at various points as well. These options are very important and should be reviewed with your IT staff or consultants to make sure you have the right hardware and software in place to protect your network and business infrastructure from
a variety of angles or possible entry points. It’s also important to get your web developer involved in the process of making sure your website is secure. There is software available that can run vulnerability tests against your company website to highlight any problem areas. There are also free services. Probably the most popular is Google Analytics that can be used to really monitor and understand your website’s activity. It’s important you work with both your IT and web development professionals to make sure you are getting the best protection available to you and your customers. The expansion, which has been ap-
proved by the Town of Fishkill, calls for the building of a 25,000 square foot extension of the current building at 200 Westage Business Center Drive. The new extension, which would expand the western side of the current building, is intended to house medical office space as well as outpatient and ambulatory care services. “We had the foresight to plan for this expansion when the original facility was first conceived,” says Ted A. Petrillo, Principal at Westage Companies. “Now that the original building is full, we are able to move to Phase Two.” Westage has already begun work on the project with the expansion of the facility’s parking lot. Space is available for lease in the new extension, including prime locations on the ground floor. The expansion will allow new healthcare tenants to have access to a broad spectrum of clinicians all in one convenient location. It can also accommodate potential tenants who are in need of more square footage than is currently available in the Phase One Section of the facility. is Mid-Hudson rts the new name for the Dutchess County Arts Council, as the group celebrates its 50th anniversary. The name reflects the organization’s expanded leadership in and support of the arts, artists and arts organizations in Dutchess, Ulster and Orange counties. To mark this milestone, on March 18 AMH launched a robust Golden Anniversary celebration including visits to arts, community and other events at 50 locations in the three-county region over 50 weeks. AMH will also conduct an informal survey at each site to gather information from the community on what arts and culture is presently available in their neigh-
borhoods, and what they would like to see in order for Arts MidHudson to build a regional Cultural Arts Plan with community input. Local arts and cultural programs add more than $30 million annually to the economy through jobs and arts-related spending, as well as by attracting visitors to the region and providing quality-of-
life benefits that corporations and their employees look for in their home community. the During last 20 years, alone, the Arts Council awarded in excess of $5 million toward more than 500 projects and programs in Dutchess and Ulster Counties, directly empowering local artists and arts organizations while bolstering community bonds and the region’s economy. Workforce program has students saying YES by louise Mcloughlin vice President of workforce development
T
he Dutchess County Department of Community and Family Services funds the Workforce Development Center at the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. One of our programs is the Youth Employment Services Program, or as we call it, the YES Program. Maryann McKenzie is our Director of Youth Services and the YES Program mentor. In 2005, the YES Program was created to address a gap in youth services. It provides young public assistance recipients in high school (ages 14-19) with academic and vocational training using a non-traditional model. The program encourages young people to stay in high school and earn their
diploma. Internship experiences are provided so that our teens learn job readiness skills. Our mentor also works with the youth on securing employment. And of course there is always room for fun! Participants go ice skating, walk on the Walkway Over the Hudson and to see exhibits at local museums. You may have even met one of them at a Contact Breakfast or Business After Hours. Recently, I have had the pleasure to watch two young women in our Youth Employment Services

Program learn and grow. They are Marlasia and Maryah, two local sisters. They told me that Maryann and the YES Program have helped them become more independent and less shy. Through the program they received their first work experience - an internship - and then using the skills they learned, they landed summer jobs. Because of their hard work, Marlasia was able to use her own money to do her school shopping, which made her feel accomplished. The YES Program has tutoring and homework help twice a week. Maryah says that it is easy to get her homework done her at the Chamber offices, saying that the tutors help clarify what she learned at school. Before joining YES, Marlasia was failing two classes, but is now back on track academically and making passing grades in ev-
ery subject. She was also recognized at a recent Contact Breakfast for a painting and logo that she created for her art class at Poughkeepsie High School. You may have seen her “Eat Local” poster at an area restaurant. The success that Marlasia, Maryah and the rest of our YES students are experiencing is proof that Dutchess County cares about our youth. The Department of Community and Family Services, the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce and our business community offer opportunities to at risk youth. If you previously haven’t thought about having a student intern or if you have an entry level job opportunity call Maryann or any of our mentors within the Workforce Development Center. You’ll be glad you did.
