n behalf of myself and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors, congratulations to the 2015 Forty Under 40 honorees. Since the award’s inception a decade ago, the Forty Under 40 has sought to recognize the top young movers and shakers in our region, both to encourage them to keep shaping the Hudson Valley and as a way to introduce them to a wide audience they may not have otherwise been exposed to.

A

few years back, the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce was glad to work in conjunction with the New York State Funeral Directors Association (NYSFDA) to bring their annual conference to the Hudson Valley. The group stayed locally at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel, dined in our local restaurants, toured our local attractions and had a wonderful and productive time!

They had such a great experience that they’re coming back! We’re happy to welcome NYSFDA again in their return to the Hudson Valley this summer, and hope their time with us exceeds even their own expectations.

This got me thinking – Dutchess County and the surrounding area really is the perfect place for a business conference. We’ve got the facilities, the restaurants and entertainment options, the tourism attractions, and perhaps most importantly the willingness to go above and beyond for these groups to really

enjoy our area. In return, we see a significant spike in economic activity!

With this in mind, I’m happy to commit to working even harder than before on packaging and promoting Dutchess County as a destination for these types of events. The Chamber is planning to work closely with all of our strategic partners in making sure that anyone who needs a first-class destination to hold their next conference, meeting or multi-day event has Dutchess County in the front of their mind.

MEMBER NeWSLINe The Board of Directors of the United Way of the DutchessOrange Region announced today the appointment of Jeannie Montano as its next President and Chief Executive Officer. Ms. Montano will be introduced to the community at United Way’s Celebration of Service Awards dinner at Anthony’s Pier 9 in New Windsor on Thursday, March 12, 2015. She will officially assume her duties on March 18.

Ms. Montano has had a long history of successful leadership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, where she served as Executive Director of the Connecticut Chapter, as Northeast Division Director and as Executive Director of the Westchester/ Hudson Valley Chapter. In those roles, she was responsible for overall leadership, management and fundraising, including budgets as large as $35 million and staffs as large as 150 employees.

Believe it or not, proactive communications actually decreases the volume of inbound calls to your office, which can reduce overall costs and at the same time, leads to higher customer satisfaction. If your business is providing valuable reminders or notifications for customers, those customers tend to respond, provided the information is useful and relevant to their needs; we all know it costs more to acquire a new customer than to retain a current customer. KeyBank donates $3,500 to Foundation, Workforce mentoring

K

eyBank has donated $3,500 to The Chamber Foundation, the nonprofit educational organization of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, to support the Chamber’s Workforce Development Center’s iTrain Employment Mentoring Program.

The iTrain Employment Mentoring program was created in 2012 to address increasing economic challenges in Dutchess County. With competition for entry-level jobs high and employers reporting frustration at not being able to find skilled workers, development of the iTrain Emloyment Mentoring Program became a priority.

The iTrain Employment Mentoring Program provides a platform for personal and professional advancement. The mentee devel-

ops necessary hard skills while learning how to manage interpersonal relationships in the workplace.

This is done using partners both inside and outside of the Dutchess

County Regional Chamber of Commerce and through internal workshops, trainings and one-to-one sessions. In addition, a wage subsidy is offered to employers.

“The mentoring work done by both The Chamber Foundation and the Workforce Development Center is an important component of the Dutchess County Re-

gional Chamber of Commerce’s economic development strategy,” said Frank Castella Jr., President and CEO of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

“We’re doing everything we can to make sure Dutchess County has the deepest and most skilled workforce possible to support the businesses in our region.”

For more than 27 years, the Workforce Development Center has successfully linked businesses to the public workforce system.

The center’s staff members strive to increase business access to qualified workers and ensure that income eligible residents are prepared for the workplace environment, its responsibilities and job retention. Their programs are run in cooperation with the Dutchess County Department of Community and Family Services.

he construction industry needs people! I heard this over and over when I took a group of Poughkeepsie High School juniors and seniors to Hudson Valley Construction Career Day at SUNY Rockland Community College on March 12.

Twenty-five students along with 14 mentors and Chamber staff members had a “hands on” experience as we navigated dozens of booths focused on various construction trades.

“I operated a crane!” “I built a brick wall!” “I learned how to

weld!” Were some of the comments that I heard from the youth at this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Students met with representatives from construction firms, local trade unions and colleges that offer career opportunities in construction. This event was not only for those interested in learning a trade but was open to all youth exploring their career options. Students who excel in math, science and English are also needed in this demanding, fast-paced, safety driven field.

We met Charlie Cooper, a bricklayer for Local 5 Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, as he directed the youth in the finer techniques of constructing a brick wall. I asked

Charlie why he took a morning off to work with the kids. He told me that bricklaying is becoming a forgotten trade. “It’s a hard trade and demanding work,” he said. “Certain people are made for a trade. If you’re willing to learn and put in effort, you can make a comfortable living.”

Lucy Redzeposki, the Career Day Coordinator, headed the day’s events. She said, “The construction industry is a hidden treasure of employment opportunities. It is an opportunity to own your own business and take care of yourself.

Leadership Dutchess class planning Storage War

T

he Leadership Dutchess Class of 2015 announces Storage War – the class’s 2015 fundraising challenge project! This unique event will take place on Thursday, May 14 at Arnoff Moving & Storage (1282 Dutchess Turnpike, Poughkeepsie). Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The night will feature storage vaults containing prizes to be raffled and auctioned off. In addition to prizes, guests will also be able to sample some of Hudson Valley’s finest in food and drink.

The Class of 2015 is currently seeking area businesses to sponsor or contribute prizes to make Storage War a huge success. Proceeds will benefit The Chamber Foundation including its general scholarship fund,

Leadership Dutchess is a signature leadership program of The Chamber Foundation, Inc. and has been dedicated to educating and motivating citizens to serve in leadership roles within our community. This program was designed to foster the development of professionals, who grow and learn together as

THursDAy, MAy 14 a group over a nine-month period.

Along with a full-day session in each of the nine months, the class is assigned to complete a fundraising challenge and a community service project. Completion of these projects will put into practice the leadership skills presented at each month’s class. Past Leadership Dutchess events have included a Casino Night and the Home Run Helicopter Drop (which we are bringing back this year!).

DCSPCa hosting 9th annual Beacon Barks

oin in the area’s largest celebration of animal shelters and rescue groups on Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. through 3 p.m. at the 9th annual Beacon Barks on Main St. in Beacon. All donations will go towards the advancement of animal shelters and rescue organizations in the Hudson Valley to support them in all that they do for homeless and abused animals.

This event is fun for the entire family and continues to bring the community together in harmony for the love animals. Dutchess County SPCA and Beacon Barkery joined forces to plan and execute Beacon Barks back in 2007 and have been going strong ever

since. Past attractions included an agility demo, dog wash, pet lookalike content and an afternoon concert. Several stores along Main St. will host dog themed special events and offers throughout the day, and vendors will contribute to the fun-filled afternoon with animal-friendly products and services.

Adoptable dogs will be there for everyone to meet and potentially take home at the Dutchess Country SPCA booth in front of the Beacon Barkery.
