utchess County has a wide diversity of business, and the camaraderie our membership promotes is unparalleled. We have a community of small and large business owners who support each other and know there is more to business than just the bottom line. Members should soon be receiving a printed Chamber Business Directory in the mail. This is a multi-faceted tool, which I encourage all members to utilize. All Chamber members in good standing should see their company name, address, phone number and website included in this easy-reference format that allows potential customers and clients to find you based on your industry. Spring is here, so if you’re looking for a lawn maintenance company, head to the Landscaping Services section. Mother’s Day is right around the corner, so make a reservation at one of

the establishments under the Restaurants category. Or, explore local treasures listed in the Tourist Attractions category. There is a category in the directory for just about anything you’re looking for. A few new features to take note of are the highlighted President’s Circle and the Chamber’s Corporate Sponsors, which have all been emphasized as another way to thank them for their continued support. ‘Member since’ dates have also been added to each listing. We are proud of how steadfast our membership is and we want the public to see this tangible evidence. My company, KeyBank, is
listed under the Banks & Banking Associations, for example, and is highlighted as a corporate sponsor. KeyBank is proud to continue its partnership with the Chamber – we understand the importance of business associations in maintaining a thriving local economy. The Chamber encourages us all to Think Local First, which includes sharing the directory with your customers or using it yourself. In short, this is a tool to help promote your business, but also helps promote the great region in which we live. The Directory is additionally available at Dutchess Tourism Information Centers to help promote our members. For our nonmember readers, consider joining the Chamber to be included in the next edition. Rita McPeck is the SBA Business Sales Officer for KeyBank. Message from the
Chamber President 'SBOL $BTUFMMB +S
O
n behalf of myself and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s staff and board of directors, congratulations to the 2017 Forty Under 40 honorees. Since the award’s inception more than a decade ago, the Forty Under 40 has recognized the top young movers and shakers in our region, both to encourage them as leaders in the Hudson Valley and as a way to introduce them to an audience they may not otherwise be exposed to, and vice versa. It’s gratifying to have such a diverse group of honorees – everyone from health care professionals and entrepreneurs to teachers and nonprofit leaders. It just goes to show that no matter the talent or career path, everyone can make a difference in his or her community. This year was especially challenging to choose only 40 honorees. We received a record number of stellar nominations and our selection committee, comprised of past honorees, was faced with the daunting task of reading and scoring each one. I would like to thank the selection committee, especially co-chairs Amy Dittmar of Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation and Emily Saland of Marist College, for their dedication and commit-
ment to this awards program. I hope you’ll join us in recognizing the 40 laudable individuals who will receive Shaker Awards this year at the celebration scheduled for Tuesday, April 25th. A cocktail reception will be held at The Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel & Conference Center followed by the awards ceremony at ChangePoint Theater across the street. Tickets and complete event information is available on our website at dcrcoc. org/40under40. Between these honorees and individuals such as our Hudson Valley Young Professionals and Leadership Dutchess graduates, I see a bright future ahead and hope each and every one of them passes on their work ethic, sense of community, and dedication through mentorship and inspiration to generations to come. Congratulations again to all of the honorees. Keep up the good work! You are all helping to build a better future for our community!
Sincerely,
Frank M. Castella, Jr. President & CEO

Experience, skills lead to careers Participants grow thanks to community support By Jessica Vitolano, Director of the Youth One Stop
C
areer Pathways are a network of structured and connected education programs and support services that enable participants, often while they are working, to grow towards a specific career and higher levels of education and training. The Youth One Stop encourages the career pathways model with its participants. Each step on a career pathway is designed to strategically prepare youth to progress to the next level of employment and create channels of growth for those unemployed or underemployed. This model thus
helps produce a steady supply of skilled workers for local employers. Recently, a group of Youth One Stop participants were interested in becoming Pharmacy Technicians and attended a series of shadow days at a local Walgreen’s Pharmacy, where they spent the day learning the routines of a pharmacy. Following their shadow day, the youths had the opportunity to enroll in Dutchess Community College’s Pharmacy Technician class. This eight-week course covers topics such as pharmacy-specific medical terminology, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and de-
fining drugs by generic and brand names. During the class the youth also can participate in a work experience opportunity in a pharmacy. By gaining practical experience, the students are more likely to be employed following graduation from the course. This is just one of many such opportunities the Youth One Stop programs helps participants take advantage of. If your business is interested in hosting a youth for a job shadow or work experience day, please call (845) 454-1700, ext. 1053. Youth One Stop is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Are you hiring for entry-level job positions? If so, please contact Elizabeth Kwant, Director of Workforce Connections (845) 454-1700 ext. 1013 elizabeth@dcrcoc.org

rying to find employment to sustain the needs of a family while lacking in experience, training, or other essential skills can feel impossible. The families of the Workforce Connections program know this feeling all too well. Participants enter the program often under stressful circumstances, in need of a job, and sometimes without hope. Program mentors work one-on-one with them to resolve the barriers that have prevented each participant from becoming employed. While many of these barriers feature recurring themes, the mentors treat each situation as unique, helping individuals overcome and progress. The next step is to work on improving skills with trainings, workshops, and real-life experience. When businesses hire one of our

akial Smith, currently a junior, is a student in the Career Explorations class offered at Poughkeepsie High School. During this course, offered through the Career Action Center, Smith has been exposed to interest and strength assessments, potential occupations, and paths to possible careers. He is also in the process of creating a résumé. For his 25-hour internship Smith knew he would enjoy some type of “hands-on” work.
He was placed at Bolt Mechanics where owner, Adam Albertelli, is a Poughkeepsie High School graduate. “I think the experience has been positive for us and Makial,” Albertelli said. “He’s been a hard worker and eager to learn more about cars. Even though Makial is interested in HVAC and electrical work, I think he’s much more aware of the [possibility] for him to have a career in the trades.” Smith has since determined
participants for an entry-level position, they are gaining an employee with extensive soft-skill knowledge and with a support system available to help them succeed. The Workforce Connections program would like to extend thanks and appreciation to all of the businesses that help and have helped participants in the past. Whether through employment, job shadows, or onthe-job trainings, each opportunity is another step towards lasting success. If your business would like more information on how to hire Workforce Connections participants, please contact Director of Workforce Connections Liz Kwant at (845) 454-1700, ext. 1013. Workforce Connections is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Dutchess County Department of Community & Family Services and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. auto mechanics is not his passion, but he has gained a mentor. “Our focus hasn’t been to teach him [all about] auto repair, rather how to act and communicate with people in a professional setting,” said Albertelli. As for Smith—who balances sports, school, and family—having the extra care and support has been motivating. Smith hopes to enlist in the Air Force after graduation. “My experience at the internship has been great! They have taught me … about the automotive industry, and they also have expressed how much they would love to see me make it out of Poughkeepsie,” he said. Career Action Center is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Poughkeepsie City School District and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Make backup, recovery easier with consolidated IT solutions By Jaime Butler
I
n today’s IT environment, businesses need to defend not only their local infrastructure, but also assets in the cloud and other virtual realms. The trend is to lean towards solid, all-in-one solutions. Here are some key reasons to consider this trend:
End the finger pointing Instead of trying to decipher which vendor to contact if a breach or failure occurs, IT administrators are choosing vendors who offer management of the physical, virtual, and cloud assets.
Turnkey access Just as it’s easier having one vendor handle all assets, it’s also easier if said vendor provides equipment that is installed, turned on, and runs with a minimum of infrastructure changes or management. Intuitive solutions should grow with a business and be easy to manage, thus eliminat-

ing costly staff training in case of crisis.
Enterprise Technology should be able to handle unified application and data integration on a single platform as another cost saving measure.
Security. Security. Security. Businesses are transitioning from Windows backup appliances, which are susceptible to malware, to those with a Linux operating system to improve security. Viruses are de-
veloped daily to attack Windows environments, but the same can’t be said for the Linux platform.
Service and support Using one vendor gives a higher level of service and confidence in the solution selected. One-stop shopping for a backup and disaster recovery solution will save valuable time and money should rebuilding after an attack ever be necessary. Jaime Butler, business development specialist at Integrated Enterprise Solutions, Inc., contributed this article. For more information about IES, visit ies-ny. com or call (845) 226-9983.
