Before summer ends, turn up the heat on your business. In August and early September the Chamber is hosting many great events sure to improve your bottom line. Start by hitting your networking out of the park - all the way into Orange County, with the joint Business After Hours at Dutchess Stadium on August 8. This Chamber tradition is always a big hit with members, and immediately following the After Hours, all attendees are invited to attend that evening’s Renegades game free of charge. Sounds like a home run to me. Get back on track at our August Contact Breakfast. The Chamber has invited Joseph Lhota, the Chairman and CEO of the MTA, as our guest speaker. Lhota leads an organization that has a significant presence in our region and a big impact on local business. Getting to hear from him directly

is something I’m sure you’ll find beneficial. This is definitely a train you won’t want to miss! Do you whine at the prospect of joining or posting on Facebook? Think you just don’t have the time to keep up with it all? Well, being visible on social media is more important than ever, so don’t forget to bring your laptops or iPads and pour on out to the Millbrook Winery on August 22 for a pre-Business After Hours seminar on common Facebook mistakes and a dialogue about best practices. Surely some new

ideas for building your businesses brand will begin to ferment. When you shop, when you dine, and when you roll your office chair over the finish line – Think Local First! Do you think your job sitting in an air-conditioned office all day is a challenge? Are you “that person” who would never trade in your hard hat for an office chair? Well sit on this, the Third Annual Office Chair Challenge Fueled by Hudson Valley Office Furniture is back September 12 at All Sport Health and Fitness in Fishkill, and your office can compete in an obstacle course putting your desk chair to the ultimate challenge. Proceeds will benefit the Hudson Valley Young Professionals Chamber Foundation scholarship. While it might be summer vacation for some, as you can see, in the business community, things are in full swing. I hope to see you out and about at some events soon!

nless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that this fall is election season, and that could mean big changes in the Hudson River Valley. With so many races for key offices being contested, there’s a lot to learn about and keep track of as you make your decisions about who to vote for. Hopefully we at the Chamber can make it a little easier for you. At the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, we pride ourselves on being an advocate for our members and the business community at large when it comes to matters of government. We want to make sure your concerns are heard, and that you can speak to those representing you directly. To this end, we’re looking forward to hosting forums with the candidates at our upcoming Contact Breakfasts and other events so you can hear firsthand how different platforms may affect you and your business. If you’re a Chamber member and have a thought regarding something in the political arena, I recommend you channel it through our Legislative Action Commit-

tee. With monthly meetings to debate issues and determine the best policy outcomes for the business community, speaking to this group is a great way to let your voice be heard. Legislative Action Committee members also participate in frequent closed-door luncheons with elected officials, ensuring they’re always engaged with the process. For more information about the committee or to raise a concern, contact our Volunteer Government Liaison Howard Lynne at howard@ dcrcoc.org. Whatever your political leanings may be, this is an important year to be involved in the process. Whether you’re a Republican, Democrat or Independent, make sure you’re well informed about the issues and the candidates, and that you get out there and vote in November!

Sincerely,

Director of Media Content at the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, will address common mistakes of Facebook users and what works when it comes to using the social networking site to promote yourself and a business. ost business owners have come to the realization that mobility with regards to your network infrastructure is priceless when you have a workforce that is dispersed across a large area, working remotely or trying to deal with clients and their needs on a 24x7 basis. You have to be concerned with the infrastructure that supports your business from a wired and wireless standpoint and if you are conscious of some key details, your Wide Area Network can offer you big returns on investment so you can keep up with your competition and your customers. When you look at your wide area network set up for your business or look to your network provider, keep these items in mind: • Mobility – If the solution you have in place or are considering setting up doesn’t allow for your mobile work force to connect and access applications or data just as quickly as those sitting in your branch office, you may need to look for other options to reap the benefits. • Cloud & Virtualization – Using the cloud and virtualized servers/workstations is becoming

increasingly popular for business owners, your solution should be able to allow access to these types of set ups with proper security against hacking into sensitive data areas. • Disaster Recovery – If you are using your WAN set up to help with the consolidation and back up of your sensitive data, you need to look further out from your current set up as you don’t want to get caught changing your WAN set up if you should change your storage provider. Always keeping an eye towards the future for your local and wide area network will always keep you one step ahead of the curve and your competition. One of the direct benefits of participating in LD was that it provided me with first-hand interaction with many non-profit organizations in Dutchess County. In fact, one of my favorite sessions involved our visit to the Family Partnership Center, where we were exposed to a number of charitable groups. As a direct result of this

How have the skills you’ve learned by going through the LD program impacted your personal & professional life? Before reflecting on the knowledge and skills I developed through the program, I have to emphasize the great relationships I made, many of which continue through my involvement with the Leadership Dutchess Committee.

The program exposed me to several impressive individuals, with different educational and professional backgrounds, in a forum in which we all came together and worked towards a common goal.

If you could go back and take part in one of the 10 sessions offered in the program again, which would it be and why? The “Communications” session held at Central Hudson. Among other speaking tasks, this session required us to break up into teams, assess an urgent crisis, and present the facts and background of the situation, as well as an immediate plan to resolve the situation. Something I always tell younger people and students training to be professionals, is that they should never miss an opportunity to speak in front of others, especially when it forces you to step outside your comfort zone. No matter what field you work in, the ability to communicate with others, in both small and large groups settings is essential to being successful.

Would you recommend this program to your family, friends & colleagues? If so, why? Yes – I would absolutely recommend this program to others. It is a unique opportunity to sharpen your leadership skills through education and experience, while also networking with other professionals, and broadening your interaction with charitable organizations in our community.

eadership Dutchess is dedicated to building a network of community leaders who will utilize their diverse talents, skills and unique perspectives to address community-wide challenges, identify viable alternatives, and help solve problems facing the Hudson Valley, both today and in the future. Along with business development and education, the program is designed to help businesspeople become more active in the community. Each program year, participates are required to spend a day together and devote a certain amount of volunteer hours in order to give back to our region. This annual day of service is designed to foster team building,

leadership skills, and effective collaboration amongst participants. Are you a community based service organization looking for assistance with painting and renovations to improve the safety, usefulness and appearance of facilities? Or perhaps adaptive reuse of space or energy efficiency improvements and/or enhance outdoor recreational spaces, such as for youth, seniors, etc.? T

he Mount Beacon Incline Railway Restoration Society has made great strides toward their goal of restoring the Mount Beacon Railway. Newly appointed president Mike Colarusso aims to continue the momentum that former president Anne Lynch left him with, and focus on an assessment of fundraising feasibility. The society recently completed a detailed market analysis and business feasibility study thanks to a grant from the Dyson Foundation.

The study, conducted by ConsultEcon, Inc., had very significant findings. It estimated that the incline will have an annual ridership of 192,000 people, create a regional economic impact of $30 million and sustain 480 jobs as a result of tourism spending. The report is great news for the Railway Restoration Society and provides a solid case for the restoration of the railway. Not only has the Mount Beacon Incline Railway Restoration Society completed an impressive market analysis, but it also secured an estimated reconstruction cost and timeline, finished a restoration concept plan complete with

ll businesses that take electronic payments could be putting themselves and their customers at risk. Electronic payment security standards and requirements are becoming more and more serious with the growing threat of identity theft. Many data security requirements are not fully understood by business owners and some payment processing companies are simply fining the merchant for not being compliant but do little to assist them in remedying the problem. With all the advancements in technology, identity theft is a fast growing crime. Cyber thieves are constantly adapting and learning new ways to steal data and per-

sonal information. The need for businesses to be compliant with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards is exponential. Many small businesses feel that they are too small to be targeted by cyber thieves and as a result do not take the necessary precautions. However, the majority of data breaches come from these small businesses. In fact, your business could already be breached without you knowing it which is why being PCI DSS compliant is mandatory for any business. Many businesses believe that they are compliant when they are not. If you do not have a compliance certificate and a compliance manual then you are not compliant. Paying

a “compliance fee” to your payment processing company does not mean that you are complying with PCI DSS standards. Payment processing companies are putting more pressure on businesses to becoming compliant and are placing heavy fines on those who are not. Businesses would benefit from ensuring that they are compliant before facing these hefty or fines or worse, being breached by a cyber thief. For help in becoming and staying PCI DSS compliant, a business can reach out to a Qualified Security Assessor or find a Payment Processor who develops and implements anti-fraud systems. Do not wait until your data security is compromised, get compliant today.

architectural, interpretive and design elements, and established an endowment with the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley to ensure financial viability of the railway. The society has also remained focused on educating students and community members with many classroom presentations, as well as continuing research of the historical Mount Beacon property. The society now looks to plan for a capital campaign to raise the estimated $20 million needed to rebuild the incline railway and create a world class nature park. There are many upcoming events to help raise funds and awareness about the project including, The Beacon Sloop Club Corn Festival on August 12, the 12th Annual Hudson River Valley Ramble Hike on Sep. 15, the Incline Railway Fall Fest/Park Quest on Oct. 7 and the Beacon Sloop Club Pumpkin Festival on Oct. 14.
