ith all the recent news impacting the regional job market, it’s nice to see the Chamber being proactive about the employment situation in the Mid-Hudson Valley.

Through the Chamber’s website, which was redesigned earlier this year, members now have the ability to submit their available job opportunities. Simply go to the “Employment” tab on dcrcoc.org, login with your member ID and password, and fill out the template with open positions, a job description, salary and any other information. These listings are visible to anyone searching the website.

Also on tap in September is the Chamber’s annual Job Fair, which this year promises to be bigger and better than ever.

ecause of the size of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce – over 2,000 members strong – we’re able to bend the ear of elected officials at all levels of government, from local legislatures to United States senators. One of our most important jobs here at the Chamber is making sure that that access and that voice is working for you.

We accomplish this in two main ways. First, by bringing elected officials directly to you at one of our events. Take this month’s Contact Breakfast for example, featuring New York State Senator Terry Gipson. Or last month, when the Hudson Valley Young Professionals hosted a forum with Gipson and New York State Assemblyman Kieran Lalor. These opportunities exist so you can hear from the people that represent us and ask them the questions that are important to you, with no filter and no middleman.

We also lean heavily on the Legislative Action Committee, co-chaired by Jeffrey Senft of S&O Construction and Paul Mancarella of De’S Jewelers, to help direct the policy initiatives the Chamber fights for.

Recently, the committee has organized meetings for business owners to better understand the impacts of the soon to be implemented Affordable Care Act as well as petition our leaders in Albany to reform the

Scaffold Law. The Legislative Action Committee is also active in making sure Chamber members are informed by regularly posting relevant content from The Business Council and others on their website. You can read that, along with Chamber Volunteer Government Liaison Howard Lynne’s Legislative Corner column, by visiting the committee online at dcrcoc.org and looking under the ‘Committees’ tab.

In addition, the Legislative Action Committee is currently seeking your feedback. There’s a short, anonymous survey available on their website where you can let us know about important economic issues facing the Hudson Valley from your perspective. Do please take a second and provide us this valuable insight.

• Don’t forget the customer service: If you are expecting employees or an office manager to interact with the phone system provider, you’ll want to make sure there is a trained and professional team ready and waiting to help them with any issues that could arise and get them resolved quickly. You also want your customers to have a good experience when placed on hold, transferred to different extensions or even re-routed to different office locations.

• Under-estimating growth potential or the lack of it: It is tricky to estimate how your business will expand, if at all. However, you need to make sure that the system you select is scalable and there aren’t any real long-term contracts that lock you into services you might not need if you don’t have the growth expected.

• Biggest mistake, picking a system that doesn’t work the way you do: Are you or your staff on the road a lot? Are there times when you have to work from home? Choose a system that works in multiple locations, has a focus on innovation allows you the flexibility to be reached or reach your customers from anywhere.

he Workforce Development Center of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce it has been awarded a 23-month contract from the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board (WIB) to create and administer the Dutchess County Youth One Stop program. Youth One Stop is a comprehensive education and jobtraining program utilizing local resources to benefit at-risk youth in Dutchess County. The contract officially begins on August 1, 2013.

“The Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is exceptionally pleased to be able to add the Youth One Stop to our Workforce Development Center,” said Charles S. North, President & CEO of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. “We’d like to thank the Workforce Investment Board for their faith in our ability to handle this important initiative and we’re looking forward to serving the youth of our county by creating career and educational opportunities that would not have existed otherwise.”

Youth One Stop is open to income-eligible Dutchess County youth and foster children ages 1421 who are facing obstacles inhibiting them from completing school, finishing their GED or gaining employment. Participants will explore career options in the community and gain practical experience through jobs and internships as well as have access to tutoring, mentorship and degree/certification programs. Wine and Food Fest returns to Fairgrounds

T

he Chamber will be on hand to cut a ribbon and help kickoff the 12th annual Hudson Valley Wine & Food Fest taking place September 7-8 at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck.

The Hudson Valley Wine & Food Fest, presented by WineRacks.com, is a celebration of the gourmet lifestyle in the Hudson Valley. The Fest features hundreds of wines from all over New York and the world, more than 100 gourmet specialty food, fine art, and lifestyle vendors, as well as food sampling from some of the region’s best restaurants and live entertainment.

Visitors can learn about wine and food from the many cooking demonstrations and food and wine seminars throughout the weekend. They can also enjoy the rare opportunity to meet and speak to the wine makers from some of New York’s best wineries.

You can purchase admission for one day or the entire weekend, with or without wine tasting, as well as beer fest tickets. Children under 12 are

admitted free, and there are group discounts available before September 1.

new this year to the Hudson valley wine and food festival is a craft beer pavilion, only now possible due to recently passed legislation allowing craft brewers to participate and sell products. craft breweries, defined as those producing 60,000 or less barrels annually, have lobbied for some time, along with leadership of the Hudson valley wine and food festival, to have the same opportunities that local wineries do, and met with success when the legislation was announced. the new legislation encourages the use of locally-grown ingredients, awarding brewers by giving them license as a “farm brewery” if 20 percent or more of their ingredients come from new york state. “the food and wine industry have long been a tremendous engine for economic development in new york state,” said michael babcock, President of wineracks.com and producer of the Hudson valley wine and food fest. “we lobbied hard to pass this bill, and we are thrilled to welcome the craft breweries to this year’s festival, along with the countless tourists who will now come to the event because of this news.”

Poughkeepsie hosting annual Jazz in the Valley event August 18 fter a successful Dutchess County debut in 2012, the Jazz in the Valley festival returns to Waryas Park in Poughkeepsie on August 18.

TRANSART and Cultural Services are celebrating the 13th annual festival, continuing the tradition of intergenerational programming. New this year, in addition to the Main Stage, is a free and open-to-the-public Pavilion Stage, which is sponsored by the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.
