DUTCHESS COUNTY REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

BottomLine The

Speaker to discuss tourism’s impact in the Hudson Valley

Contact Breakfast sponsored by

Vrba has called the Hudson Valley home since 1977 and started her career in tourism in 1994. She has a background in recreation and in her past has worked as the Dutchess County’s Commissioner of Parks, Recreation, & Conservation, served as the Hudson River Valley Association’s director of tourism, was a partner in Crossroads International Management and taught as an adjunct professor at NYU’s hospitality program. In 2006, she was named director of Dutchess County Tourism; in early 2012, her title expanded to executive director and in that same year was elected to the board of directors of the Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation.

Vrba will be discussing tourism’s impact on the economy, future initiatives and what’s on the horizon for the Hudson Valley. To register for the August Contact Breakfast, please visit dcrcoc.org or call 845-454-1700 ext. 1000. Our August contact breakfast is sponsored by TEG Federal Credit Union. TEG Federal Credit Union’s local roots stretch back to 1969, when teachers from the Wappingers Central school district decided to create an alternative as they desired a financial institution that would provide fair and equitable treatment. Over the years membership expanded to government workers, employee groups and to all who live, work,

worship or attend school in New York’s Dutchess, Orange and Ulster Counties. They know that choosing where to save, invest, and where to borrow from, are some of the biggest decisions any person faces. That’s why they take their responsibility to their members seriously. They’re proud to be local, memberowned, and not for profit. For more information please visit them at tegfcu.com. The Chamber’s Ambassador committee has partnered with our Workforce Development Center to collect canned and dry goods at our Contact Breakfast. Your donations are greatly appreciated.

ith the 27th Annual Hudson Valley HotAir Balloon Festival in its rear-view mirror, the Chamber staff is already planning events for the second half of the year, as members and the business community will soon start thinking about 2019. Previously I have challenged our membership to be more engaged, and this month I ask you to become more proactive in your membership. While August can be a slower month for some, it is a good time for you to take stock of what your membership plans are for the remainder of the year. Our event calendar is the best place to start. The Chamber is steadfast in providing regular programming designed to align with your current and future business priorities. Balloon Festival a big success thanks to sponsors, partners

T

he 27th Annual Hudson Valley Hot Air Balloon Festival is behind us, and this signifies that more than half the year is over. And while we have many exciting events on the horizon, I would like to take this month’s message to give proper accolades to everyone who helped make the festival successful this year. As you know, one of the main goals of this event is to gain exposure to the Hudson Valley region and in particular local businesses and organizations. We unquestionably achieved this in 2018 for the Chamber and for our sponsors. Only a few short years ago we had about 10,000 page views on our balloon festival website. And as a result of promotion and media attention, we increased that this year to over 400,000 page views leading up to the event. And our social media reach through our efforts and to those of our partners exceeded 5.5 million impressions. This directly correlates to market penetration, event brand ownership, exposure and economic impact for our members. And consequently, traffic to our membership directory has increased significantly. For many years we have looked to the business community to help underwrite the expense of the festival, and as

always, this community delivered. We plan to thank all our sponsors at a special tourismthemed breakfast at the August Contact Breakfast but a special thanks now to our three main event sponsors -- Q92.1 FM (iHeartMedia), Bottini Fuel and LCS Facility Group. These organizations were true partners in this event, and they played an active role in its day-to-day success. Many volunteers signed up to help with staffing throughout the weekend, in addition to the support of several of our community partners. Whether providing logistics, promotion, security, or even printing materials, these organizations all went above and beyond both leading up to and during the festival weekend. You can still see the list of our sponsors and partners at www. balloonfesthv.com. Thank you to each and every one of you: our sponsors, volunteers, community partners, municipal agencies, the Fairgrounds, and our faithful and tireless Chamber employees, and attendees, for helping us to make this year’s festival a phenomenal success! Sincerely,

Frank M. Castella, Jr., President & CEO

Choices in fitness trackers By Jaime M. Butler

A

re you looking for a fitness tracker? This month we’ll compare two popular options, the Fitbit Versa and the Apple Watch to help you make a final decision. The Fitbit Versa for starters is a more affordable cost option than the Apple Watch. But if cost isn’t a deterrent, here’s some information and details that will further help in your decision. B o t h products share a similar look and feel, have interchangeable straps and a selection of finishes and faces so you can customize the look to your taste. They are both water resistant up to 50 meters, so showering or tracking laps in the pool won’t be an issue. Once we dig into their design features, like

comfort, the thin design of the Fitbit is hard to beat. However, changing the band becomes quite a struggle whereas for the Apple version, swapping straps is quite easy. The Apple Watch is overall smaller on the wrist, but the sensor on the bottom bulges out and may dig into your skin when the strap is set too tight. W h i l e both devices can send notifications to/from y o u r phone, only the Apple Watch gives you unlimited responses. You can handle quick replies on the Versa, but it has no microphone so you won’t be able to dictate or scribble a response like you can with the Apple. Both devices can give you deeper details about your fitness data over time. Fitbit consolidates this into its main phone app, while

the Watch splits this across the Watch app, the Activity app and the Health app on the iPhone. The Fitbit app has a better way to translate heart-rate readings into useful information like telling you if you were in a fatburning, cardio or peak zone during a workout. That said the Apple Watch will soon be upgrading their activity tracking fea-

Mentors also facilitate an intensive job and career readiness mentoring program to 50 juniors and seniors at Poughkeepsie High School. The Career Action Center is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Poughkeepsie City School District and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Students gain skills through the Summer Youth Employment Program By Katrina Gobins Director of Career Action Center

E

ven in the heat of summer, the Career Action Center (CAC) is open and assisting students throughout the season. This summer, 12 students from Poughkeepsie High School are participating in the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). Each year the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board awards grants to different agencies who have submitted an application to either employ youth in Dutchess County or to place them with a business in the community. The Career Action Center was excited to receive the award grant which alotted for 12 spots to place youth with a local business. Students are able to work up to 20 hours a week for 6 weeks in the summer with the hopes of gaining positive workplace habits that help them learn skills to obtain perma-

nent employment. Once a week students meet at the Chamber office and attend job readiness training. By the end of the program they will have developed a resume, have increased knowledge of financial literacy, developed computer skills, and become aware of various career options. Ty’shea Cumminings, an upcoming junior this fall is part of this program and is currently working at Crunch Fitness in Poughkeepsie. Ty’shea was interested in possibly pursuing a career in the field of Athletics, so this position was a good fit. When asked about the program Ty’shea stated, “I like the program because everyone involved is very uplifting and it’s a good fit for my future because of the access to different experiences. At my job, I am learning everything from customer service, intake procedures, and learning about using office equipment”.

The Workforce Connections Program comprises both education/training services and staffing resources. These organizations are often multi-faceted and offer several programs that help with both existing and future employees. The Workforce Connections Program is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Dutchess County Department of Community and Family Services and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Participants get a hand up in navigating job search By Elizabeth Kwant Director of Workforce Connections

T Together the CAC and the SYEP are helping program particapants increase their employability skills, as well as providing much needed exposure to various careers that they wouldn’t normally have access to. These experiences help students learn valuable long term life skills on how to be successful in the workplace. This combined with the commitment from local community businesses that are willing to work with our youth - is what makes this such a meaningful experience for these students.

Youth One Stop is a comprehensive education and job-training program utilizing local resources to benefit at-risk youth in Dutchess County. The program is open to income-eligible youth, ages 14-24 who are facing obstacles inhibiting them from completing school, finishing their HSE or gaining employment. Youth One Stop is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board and The Chamber Foundation, Inc.

he journey to employment can be a long and often overwhelming for many job seekers. Individuals who have been out of the workforce for any period of time often have a difficulty readjusting to the working world. Having a knowledge base of office etiquette, job searching skills, problem and conflict solving, and resume writing helps to give the Workforce Connections Program (WFC) participants a hand up while navigating the employment process. Laying the foundation of this knowledge begins upon enrollment into the Workforce Connections Program. Upon enrollment, each participant is assigned a case manager, whom they will work one-on-one with to receive advice, encouragement, mentoring, supportive services, and so much more. WFC participants then be-

gin attending regular workshops about budgeting, soft skills, life skills, and personal and professional development. Each participant creates a resume and cover letter and works one-on-one with their case manager to job search and eventually secure employment. After gaining employment, the WFC case managers work to assist their participants in retaining their jobs. Ultimately, WFC case managers will provide the ongoing supportive services necessary to aid their participants in their success.

For YOS student, motivation and excellence drives success By John Pierre-Louis Youth One Stop Case Manager

T

his month we are profiling Khalil Charles, who we’re proud to say met all of his goals this year for the Youth One Stop program. Khalil enrolled into the program in June of 2017. Despite facing some challenges, he persevered and is working full time at the Anderson Center for Autism

as a direct support professional. Khalil’s motivation is his new born son, girlfriend, and his siblings. He understands the importance of having a full time job and taking care of his family. He is looking forward to growing within the company at Anderson in hopes to become a shift supervisor or a manager of a house. He loves working and helping clients who have difficult needs. Khalil is also

an active mentor with students on a day-to-day basis and always up for the challenge in particular when a new intake arrives. He strives for excellence in his work and methods, adheres to his training schedule and attends all his required classes. He also continues to be an active participant in the Youth One Stop program attending monthly activities. Youth One Stop will continue

to follow up with Khalil to make sure he continues to meet his goals and continues on his path. We wish him the best in continuing his employment and pursuing his dreams, which include aspirations for college. We will continue to be a level of support in helping him and all of our graduates reach their goals. Khalil is an upstanding individual and he was a pleasure to work with.
