ratitude. That is the overwhelming feeling I have as I write my final Bottom Line article. It has truly been my pleasure to serve as Chair of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce over the past year. It has been a delight to work alongside this group of talented leaders.

I commend all of the Board members of both the Chamber and the Chamber Foundation for their leadership and support not only to the Chamber, but to our entire community.

or the past year, my staff and I have had the pleasure of working with Jill Sammon of Central Hudson as the chairperson of our board of directors. At the Chamber, this is not a ceremonial position. Jill has taken countless hours out of both her work schedule and personal time in order to serve the members of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, where she has sat on committees, attended events and made presentations at just about every ribbon cutting ceremony we performed this year. Through it all, she always represented the Chamber with class and professionalism, and I cannot thank her enough.

The Chamber’s board of directors is a very active body, holding regular meetings and doing a real service in positioning the Chamber for future success. Jill not only oversaw their work, but also kept an eye on the heads of all the other Chamber committees. She did all this as a volunteer because she believes in our mission.

Jill’s easygoing nature and approachability were great assets for our Chamber. She made members feel like family at events, was always willing to lend an ear to their concerns and has turned into quite the emcee!

Among her most enduring legacies will be the time and energy she spent supporting our legislative action efforts on behalf of our members. Our Legislative Action Committee helps you stay connected to elected officials, and Jill has been front-and-center in advocating for your interests from town hall to Albany and beyond.

She also has helped make sure our Gala is the finest in the region. Jill personally sat in on every meeting, offered helpful suggestions and rolled up her sleeves when the work of planning a major event like the Gala needed to get done.

As Jill passes the gavel to Ori Brachfeld for 2014, I’m happy to report that she’ll remain active on Chamber committees and I’m certain she will be no stranger to Chamber events. On behalf of the Chamber staff, our members and myself, I want to again give my most sincere thanks to Jill Sammon for everything she did for us during her year as chairperson. She without a doubt made our Chamber better.

All sport changes with the times

ll Sport Health and Fitness is 34 years strong. From its beginnings as a racquetball club, All Sport has expanded into a large health and wellness center, offering many sports, personal training, nutrition, wellness and fitness options – including of course, racquetball. All Sport is community minded and family owned and orientated. Children under 12 are free with an adult membership.

Much like the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, All Sport is constantly changing and improving with the times. Through the years, the physical structure has been expanded numerous times.

Preventing sPAM – rules to live by

within an email until you can verify the link will take you to a desired website. You can do this in Microsoft Outlook by holding the mouse over the link, without clicking on it, and wait for the actual link to display. As an example, the text in the email may show https://www.paypal.com, but the actual link may take you to a hacker’s site where it mimics the PayPal login page. If you attempt to login to the “fake” site, the hacker has just captured your login credentials.

5) Do NOT send bulk email from your corporate email servers. This can cause your email server to be viewed as a source of SPAM, resulting in emails sent from your server being blocked by the recipient’s email server.

How? There are legitimate servers that scan the Internet for email traffic coming from email servers. If the traffic originating from your server increases drastically, or is sending out large amounts of email, it is listed on what is called a “reputation server.” Your reputation can be “good”, “bad”, or “undetermined”. Instead of sending mass emailings from your email server, use a bulk email provider, such as Constant Contact or Mailchimp.

Keep these tips and tricks in mind as you go to open your email, but the best advice that can be offered is one of common sense; if it looks at all suspicious, don’t open it and delete it or contact your IT professional to verify the contents.

This is impractical in today’s high-paced electronic world. Here are a few things you can do to help delay the discovery of your email address by SPAMmers, stay off the lists as long as possible, and reduce the SPAM in your inbox to a manageable level.

1) Do NOT display your email address on ANY website, including social media sites like Facebook or Twitter.

2) Do NOT click on the “unsubscribe” link at the bottom of the SPAM, or UCE. This only confirms that a human reads email sent to your address.

3) Leave your preview pane off in your email client. If you have your preview pane on, a cleverly crafted email can automatically confirm you read the email, and the SPAMer gets paid.

Figure out what a customer of yours might want, and make sure you give it to them upfront. You don’t want to bury the most popular content deep within your site. Use your analytics tools wisely to find out what people are looking for,

and give it to them! If you search for what your customers are looking for, you should come up in the results.

3. Look like the biggest thing out there!

A website is a perfect opportunity to present yourself as well, or better than your largest competitor! It doesn’t cost any more, or it shouldn’t, to add all the bells and whistles so that you are perceived as an industry leader. Couple the look and feel of your site with solid information, and you will BE the industry leader!

Foundation campaign getting closer to its goal

Consider helping those less fortunate this holiday season

was talking to a three-year-old girl the other day, and mentioned that I was meeting with Santa next week. Her eyes instantly lit up. I told her that I could tell Santa what she wanted for Christmas. She said, “I would like a baby and a tea set please.”

In that moment I was remind-

ed of my daughter at that age. She had the same flyaway blonde hair that no matter what you do won’t be tamed. She spoke in the same happy, breathless way. And she was filled with the same innocence and joy.

There was a big difference, though. Santa came to our house every year without fail. I looked to her mom, who was busy filling out our Adopt-A-Family wish list.

We exchanged a glance that said it

all: without the assistance of our Chamber members or a local family, this little one may not get her Christmas wish.

We select our families based on their performance within our program. This little girl is lucky

that her mom has been working hard all year to improve the quality of life for her family, and was selected to be part of Adopt-AFamily.

In this season of giving we all have many opportunities to help our neighbors. Whether you call the Chamber and “adopt” one of our families, drop a toy off at Foam & Wash or Chamber event for our Hudson Valley Young Professionals Toy Drive, or select an

angel off a tree in your place of worship, it is extending a hand to help someone up.

One of my happiest moments this year was sending out the family profile for my new little friend and knowing that under her tree there will be a doll and a tea set.

Nominations open to recognize future leaders

he Chamber’s annual Forty Under 40 awards will be presented on April 22, 2014. Nominations are now being accepted.

Do you know an outstanding person under the age of 40 who is making a positive impact in the community? If so, nominate them for a Shaker Award, an honor presented annually to the rising stars in the region.

A good nominee is between

the ages of 18-39 and is committed to making the Hudson Valley a better place to live, give back, work hard, play hard, and ultimately put down roots. Successful candidates might be a young business leader, a trailblazer with a new idea, someone who shows an outstanding dedication to volunteerism, or just a person who, in their own way, makes a difference day in and day out.
