et in the holiday spirit and revel in the sounds of the season at the December Contact Breakfast on Wednesday, December 17 from 7:30-9 a.m. at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel and Conference Center. With performances by the Poughkeepsie High School Choir, Roy C. Ketcham High School Choir, FDR High School Concert Choir and the Arlington High School Brass Choir, as well as the annual Hudson Valley Fresh chocolate milk toast, even the most miserly among us will be filled with Christmas cheer.

In addition to enjoying the festivities, all attendees are asked to bring a new, unwrapped gift to donate to the Hudson Valley Young Professional’s Holiday Gift Drive. All donations will benefit local kids and teens served

by Grace Smith House. While all toys are graciously accepted, items for teens – books, DVDs, headphones, cosmetics, fragrance sets, sports equipment, etc. – are

cannot believe I’m opening this column with the words “this is my last letter to the Chamber membership as your Chairman.” This year flew by at a rate that seems much quicker than normal. But then again, I guess it’s true that time flies when you’re having fun.

Looking back, I’ve noticed a whole lot of changes at the Chamber, none larger than the announcement of the upcoming retirement of Charlie North, our President and CEO, and our subsequent choosing of a new leader who will take this Chamber to the next level. But aside from the obvious, our programs continued to grow, change and

In the first full year of the Youth One Stop program the number of people they are now serving is astounding, and they’re doing it efficiently and effectively! Equally impressive was the launch of our collaboration with the Poughkeepsie City School District to install

the Career Action Center at Poughkeepsie High School.

This partnership will, I believe, serve as a model for other chambers nationwide in how to prepare our youth for entry into the workforce.

These are exciting times for the Chamber and the Hudson Valley, I am so very thankful for the opportunity and privilege to serve the business community in my capacity as chairman. I have been truly blessed to have a front row seat for all of the great things we’ve been able to accomplish.

Adopt-A-Family and help spread joy this season

T

he Adopt-A-Family Program at the Workforce Development Center of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce relies on business leaders and local families to bring Santa Claus to local children who would do without this holiday season.

Families are selected from our Work Now, Responsible Parent Initiative, Youth Employment & Education Services, Step Up, the Youth One Stop programs, as well as the Career Action Center. In order to be selected the individual enrolled in the program must be a

“shining star” and be active in all aspects of their programs.

For our youth, it means they must be attending school, going to tutoring and passing their classes.

For the adults it means they must be working on their goals, which for most of them is finding a job. Most of the adults selected for this program are working. Some have completed a training program and received a certificate and are working entry level jobs and on a career path to change their situation.

The staff at the Chamber takes this program very seriously and recognizes that the companies and the families that adopt their participants work hard and are willing

to help a family in need yet at the same time have the expectation that the family is working to help themselves. The families that we select not only need the help but they are also actively working to improve their situation.

Last year at this time I met a little girl here at the Chamber.

Her mom was in our Work Now program. Her mentor helped her get a job and she was working but she still needed a little extra help that holiday season. I asked the little one what she hoped that Santa would bring and she said, “I would like a baby doll and a tea set, please!” I will admit that I wanted to go to the store and immediately buy her a doll and a tea set and wrap it up for Christmas, but I didn’t. I wrote up the family pro-

file and gave it to one of our wonderful businesses. I knew that her wish would be fulfilled, and it was!

Working on the Adopt-AFamily Program is my favorite thing to do at the Chamber. Each year I witness people giving from their hearts to families that I work with all year to push forward to their goals. I see the families that receive the gifts become so humbled and grateful for the support.

I think that their gratitude is not limited to the receiving of gifts but includes the realization that they are not alone, that there are people “out there” that care.

From the incoming President: An ode to Charlie North Back in 1982 when you arrived in Dutchess County, Little did the community know, Charles S. North would bring such great bounty.

Arriving here in a career in banking, you quickly moved up in your ranking.

From banker to Poughkeepsie Chamber in ’92, It didn’t take long for the community to band around you.

It’s hard to describe the energy you brought, But these words come to mind: dynamic, electric and well-thought.

Depending on who you ask, some would even say you’re funny, A short stent back to banking would prove your love for the Chamber and community wasn’t all about the money.

The organization without you became broke while entering a new millennium, It was changing times, but you knew if you built it – they would come.

More than ever our community needed a great leader, Someone who knew there was no time to take a breather.

Months went by and you didn’t draw a salary, You paid bills from your home equity - all to benefit our beloved Hudson Valley.

Ribbon cuttings, breakfasts, expos, forums, festivals, foundation, mentoring, transitions, consolidation, young professionals, committees, boards and campaigns galore, our community kept begging for more.

You earned respect and many awards, but to you it was onwards and upwards.

It never was about accolades; you did it to make sure businesses stayed.

You promoted the Chamber, saying “it isn’t better than any of the rest,” You often stated, “this Chamber is simply different, and not the best” But when you sold it – members were always impressed.

You grew membership and quenched their thirst, becoming Mr. Think Local First.

Though a Dutchess transplant you have proven yourself quite the wordsmith, To us, you will always be a driving force to be reckoned with.

Your humor… is something we will all sure miss, Just like the time you gave the County Executive a big…fat…kiss, Or when you wore leather chaps at our Gala with a Twist.

Joanne, Alex and Joe, we don’t have to tell you, he’s a combo of Larry, Curly AND Moe. And so yes, it is that time… as written in your recent poem, It’s hard for ALL of us, but we know it’s time for you to go.

You will be back in one form or another, A few months up here…and the rest souther.

You can’t stay away for too long, for it’s Dutchess where your heart is…and belongs.

But there is something we need to share with you before you leave, I speak for the community when I say a sincere thank you for all you have achieved.

Feel good about eating at Soul Dog

A

t Soul Dog in the City of Poughkeepsie their mission statement is simple: serve delicious food that people can feel good about eating. And that’s exactly what they do.

Located on Main Street two blocks east of the train station, Soul Dog is a perfect place to grab a quick bite. They serve a variety of house-made foods with something for everyone. Meat lovers will be happy to know that the store serves all beef, natural casing hot dogs, as well as locally made chicken and Italian-style dogs.

Supporting other local businesses is foremost in Chef/Owner Susan Ardito Wysocki’s purchasing decisions. There are also inventive vegetarian and vegan options such as quinoa chili, grilled cheese sandwiches and their signature plantain veggie burger.

our kitchen is a dedicated gluten free space. That includes the ovens and deep fryers,” Wysocki says.

They do bring in regular wheat hot dog and hamburger buns from an outside producer to serve to folks that prefer them.

Chef Wysocki believes in producing food the “old fashioned” way. Her concept at Soul Dog is serving slow food in a fast food setting. This is in line with the restaurant trend of recent years of getting back to consuming local, in-season foods.

Charlie leaves a great Foundation

T

his month, as the community honors Charlie North, The Chamber Foundation extends its appreciation and admiration for the man who has given so much and embodied the mission of our organization.

With a focus on youth and education, The Chamber Foundation was formed in 2002 under

In 2011, The Chamber Foundation broadened its scope taking on two major leadership programs: Youth Leadership and Leadership Dutchess. Over the years, the Foundation has added additional programming including the ATHENA Awards as well as additional youth development initiatives all with one thing in mind – to strengthen leadership and

build a future of bright, energized individuals.

Charlie is The Chamber Foundation’s biggest cheerleader. There is nothing he would not do to promote and enhance the work of the Foundation, from dressing up in chaps at the Twisted Gala to hopping in a golf cart to personally thank each of the golfers at the annual Nussbickel Memorial Golf Tournament. Charlie even started a scholarship fund in his name, The Charles S. North Scholarship Fund, encouraging the pursuit of music in education – a personal passion of his.

Charlie’s commitment to the leadership programming was unwavering as well. No matter what his schedule, he always made time to visit and participate, bringing his leadership experiences to the classroom setting for participants to experience and learn from.

Yes, The Chamber Foundation has been supported by many donors, board members, volunteers and committee members, all helping to push the Foundation forward. But it is our leader, Charlie North, who helped bring us all together and strive for the same goal. His efforts were tireless, and as we celebrate his accomplishments, we thank Charlie for building a future of strong, vibrant leaders to carry on the legacy that he leaves behind.
