s we near the end of the year, I must think back on my tenure as Chair of the Board of Directors for the Chamber. I am proud to have had this opportunity to work closely with the members and staff of this great organization. This has been a year full of new connections, old friends, and attending many events. I am honored to have been a part of it all. This year also saw a lot of changes at the Chamber. It was a pleasure to work with President & CEO, Frank Castella, Jr. and seeing the dynamic changes

n November, we pushed the Small Business Saturday initiative as hard as ever, driving consumers to our small business Members open the Saturday after Thanksgiving and who accept American Express. However, Think Local First is not a once-a-year holiday, but a lifestyle we at the Chamber have embraced. Think Local First doesn’t just encompass our spending habits, but our giving habits, too. I encourage you to think local not only when shopping, but also when giving. Donate your time at a local food bank or soup kitchen. Donate your talent through volunteerism to a local nonprofit. Donate your treasure to a local organization serving this beautiful community in which we thrive. Our generosity will help local people in need to have a warmer, brighter, and better holiday season and New Year. Say no to holiday stress By Anne De Muro Health & Wellness Club
T
he holidays are right around the corner. Some are excited for the challenge of finding that special gift, while others are dreading the hustle and bustle. Can you say stress? Many caregivers of family members or neighbors are already feeling overwhelmed with just daily responsibilities. For them, the holidays can seem like another impossible situation to navigate while trying to keep smiling.
Traditions The holidays are filled with traditions that offer a reassuring sense of nostalgia and wellbeing— just like when we were children. But, why not try to tweak them this year to reduce stress? Consider asking a family member to host the holiday dinner. Not an option? Try a potluck meal instead and let family and friends share in the fun (and work!) and don’t forget to have someone bring the fancy pa-
per goods and plastic utensils for easy cleanup!
So many invitations, so little time Every invitation doesn’t have to be answered with a yes. Friends often invite you, but will understand if you need to pass on the party this year, they don’t want to exclude you. Saying ‘no’ is an important option for setting healthy boundaries to simplify holiday activities. Enjoy the spirit of the season without falling prey to over-committing and the associated high levels of stress. Also consider putting events on your calendar tentatively. Waiting to see what the day is like allows for last-minute visits to share holiday cheer.
Gifts! It’s a good rule to accept all gifts offered. Gifts are fun for the giver and even more so for the receiver. Caregivers should be honest when thinking of things they need or want this year. This is the per-
fect opportunity to suggest something practical. Helpful items such as frozen meal, a night out for temporary relief of care-giving responsibilities, or even a rain check for help running an errand at a later date go a long way towards making a caregiver’s life a little easier. Maybe ask for a batch of your favorite cookies to share with a little company. Simplify giving with heartfelt notes or gift certificates. Family

Local nonprofits receive grants The Ulster Savings Charitable Foundation recently awarded
grants to three nonprofit organizations in the Poughkeepsie area. United Way of the DutchessOrange Region received $5,000 to support its Early Education Coalition Program, which aims to fight the low levels of childhood literacy in Dutchess and Orange counties by collaborating with other nonprofits, businesses, public sector agencies and community members to share resources, develop best practices and find creative solutions to serve the greater community. Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum received $5,000 to support the implementation of “Museums for All,” an initiative designed to ensure that every child and family has access to high-quality children’s museum experiences. The Museum’s goal is to have 10 percent of annual visitation be families from Ulster, Dutchess and Orange counties utilizing the “Museums for All” program within three years. Hudson River Housing received $10,000 to supplement its outreach, materials, and personnel for its Financial Fitness program, which aims to improve the financial stability of participants through workshops. Topics include proper income calculation, tracking household spending, why credit is important, and how to improve a credit rating.

Mentors in Workforce programs strive to improve lives
M
any participants and Chamber members have asked me about our Workforce Development Center and what it’s all about, so here’s a brief overview. The Workforce Development Center comprises three programs: Workforce Connections, the Career Action Center at Poughkeepsie High School, and the Youth One Stop. Our staff works hard to offer opportunities to participants. Pri-
marily, we help them find and keep a job, but there are lots of other things we help with, as well. In the Career Action Center at Poughkeepsie High School, the staff strives to keep the youth engaged in school and working towards his or her High School
Diploma. They also assist with college applications and scholarships, gaining admission to trade school, and preparing for interviews. In the Youth One Stop, case managers assist youth with increasing literacy and numeracy (or reading, writing, and ‘rithmatic)
levels, attaining a degree or certificate, and placement in secondary education and/or employment. Lastly, the Workforce Connections program prepares adults receiving government assistance to become self-sufficient through gainful employment. These are our goals, but to achieve them, we must think and work outside the box. Participants have taken a yoga and meditation class to learn how
to manage stress and channel anger, have attended family nights to learn parenting skills, and work closely with the mentors to develop the proper social skills necessary for success in the workplace. The staff at the Workforce Development Center meets individuals “where they are,” assisting them through mentorship and case management to achieve his or her goals. It is always encouraging when we see how many succeed with our help.

T
his fall the students of the Dutchess Community College High School Equivalency class hosted by Youth One Stop were asked to think of a product to sell as a fundraiser at the Business Expo in October. Students suggested cookies with the YOS logo, a keyboard duster with the YOS logo, and full size candy bars, but the winning idea was to make and sell Caramel Apple Kits. Inside a small mason jar, students placed individually wrapped caramel candy and tied an apple on top with string. Their teachers took full advantage of the potential math lesson and helped the students arrive at a minimum price after factoring in the cost of materials and “The Youth One Stop Candy Shop” was born. On the day of the Business Expo, two students were excused from class to assist with sales at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center and case managers were given strict instructions to not do it for them!
After a few panicked and pleading looks, they perfected their sales pitch. By describing the career advice and encouragement they received from case managers and mentors, the students successfully persuaded Expo attendees to purchase the kits. At the end of the day, all of the jars were sold and Youth One Stop had made over $100 to be used toward future programming. Thank you to everyone who purchased a Caramel Apple Kit! he idea of not being able to afford presents for my children at Christmas was a foreign concept to me until I started working with our families at the Chamber’s Workforce Development Center. Sure, I took a star off the tree at church and bought the requested item, went to the toy store to buy a gift for Toys 4 Tots, and dropped my spare change in the Salvation Army kettle, but I never truly understood the despair a parent feels when they know Santa is not coming. In December 2008, I remember sitting in my office when a mom shows up, just days before Christmas, with tears in her eyes because she doesn’t have gifts for her children. My initial reaction was to think the situation was due to a lack of planning; mom should have done a better job! After speaking with her and doing some math with her budget, I realized with a sinking heart she had not misspent her money, she did not make enough for any nonessential purchases. Unfortunately, I have witnessed this many times in subsequent years. Recently, we had a movie night in the office. We had popcorn and watched a movie from a staff member’s Netflix account. As one of the parents was leaving, she thanked us. “This is the first time I have been able to take my children to the movies,” she said through tears. Situations like this, while
heartbreaking, cause me to stop and realize how extremely fortunate I am. Since 2008, I have worked with Chamber staff to arrange the pickup and delivery of gifts (as part of the Adopt-A-Family program) from many local families and busi-

ach year, Mariapolis Luminosa has proven to be the perfect location and generous host of the ATHENA VIP Reception. The community welcomes us with open arms by preparing outstanding food and providing us with their beautiful facility. Mariapolis Luminosa, the Focolare little city for North America, is located in Hyde Park. The community hosts a great variety of gatherings for children and adults, families, entrepreneurs, and religious organizations including our annual reception. Chiara Lubich (1920-2008), a charismatic and significant woman of the 20th century, founded the international Focolare Movement in 1943 during World War II as a current of spiritual and social renewal. Community members strive to cooperatively build a more united world, respecting and valuing

diversity. It focuses on dialogue as a method and is committed to building bridges and relationships among individuals and cultures. This perfectly fits with the ATHENA model, which focuses

Metabolic Syndrome increases risk for diabetes, other diseases By Lou Paradise
M
etabolic syndromeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; also known as insulin resistance syndromeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; includes a number of serious health conditions such as high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar levels, body fat in excess around the waist and stomach spreading into the internal organs, high LDL cholesterol levels, and/or low HDL levels. When these conditions occur
together, individuals have an increased risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and even premature death. Many studies indicate consuming carbonated beveragesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;diet or regular sodaâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;as well as food or beverages containing high fructose corn syrup is directly linked to the obesity epidemic, diabetes, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome in both adults and children.
The cure is not going to be found in a laboratory or by taking prescription medication or nutritional supplements alone. t is hard to remember a time before business email. Email is often sent through a variety of providers, but typically through the cloud. However, not every cloud provider is right for every businessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs. Here are four questions to keep in mind before changing email providers: 1. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the experience level? Ensure the provider has the skills required to set up accounts, migrate customer data, provide support, maintain data centers and infrastructure, and enable mobile users. 2. What quality of customer support is available? A lot of providers offer 24/7 support services, but consider if the representatives are from an outsourced service or (preferably)
a Microsoft-certified technician. 3. What other hosted services could be integrated into the email offering? Integrating multiple cloud applications can be difficult. Consider asking providers what services are available in addition to email for a more streamlined approach. 4. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in the contract? Be clear whether any migration or onboarding services, support, or adding administrators will be included or cost extra. Prevent overlooked costs and surprises by understanding the ins and outs of the contract.
