H
appy New Year to all my fellow Chamber members. I hope the holidays treated you well, but now it’s time to get back to a normal groove. As I’m sure you’ve heard, the Chamber has been making a great push to make its presence known in southern Dutchess County and even opened an office right around the corner from mine in Beacon. Everyone who knows me knows the dear place Beacon holds in my heart. I’ve seen firsthand that the Chamber understands what makes Beacon special, and how important every business there is to the fabric of that community. That’s why I’m excited to encourage everyone, espe-
Ori Brachfeld cially southern Dutchess business owners, to visit our new office on Henry Street and talk to one of the friendly Chamber staff members there. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how the Chamber can make the community stronger. Membership in the Chamber helps us hold great community events like the Balloon Festival and Breakfast of Champions

Message from the
Chamber President
Charles S. North
A
few weeks ago, I had the privilege of addressing the Dutchess County business community and delivering the annual “State of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce” address. In case you missed our breakfast that morning, I’d like to take this opportunity to recap of some of the highlights. We spent a lot of time talking about a Chamber’s role in government. With 2014 being an important election year, expect the candidate forums and meet and greets of the past to return full force. Also look for your Chamber to be very specific in going after reform. Getting relief from state mandated spending is something that we are looking to accomplish. Many mandates are important and we shouldn’t get rid of them all, but some can certainly go, and we’re going to help see to it that they do. We look forward to working with our representatives, including State Sen. Terry Gipson and State Assemblyman Kieran Lalor, who have proposed an amendment for relief on state mandate spending, as well as our County Executive Marcus Molinaro, who is looking to reduce state imposed
mandates. We are also excited to announce that we’re completely revamping our membership directory both in print and online. For those of you that like the tangible directory, we’re soon to roll out a streamlined and better-organized version that you can find at key locations throughout the area. Online, members will have complete control over a beautifully redesigned and functional web page that appears on dcrcoc.org. You can add photos, descriptions, maps, social media links, even a contact form so people can e-mail you. Being part of this online directory will also help improve your Google search ranking and will also be fully available on mobile devices as well. If you’d like more information about all that was discussed during the “State of the Chamber,” the full text is available online at dcrcoc. org. As always, if you have any questions or ideas, do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely,
Charles S. North President & CEO

Program develops future leaders
T
he Thayer Leader Development Group (TLDG) helps build leaders of character by offering leadership and ethics education grounded in the United States Army leadership philosophy of “Be, Know, Do” and the United States Military Academy values of “Duty, Honor, Country.” The program takes place at the inspirational venue of the historic Thayer Hotel at West Point. TLDG is the benchmark in leadership development, providing both world-class applied academic instruction and experiential learning in an unequalled inspirational setting. Just as the Army focuses on the “whole” leader--character, knowledge, and application--TLDG’s unique four-pronged approach to leadership development creates an extraordinarily complete, customized experience for participants: 1. Applied academics sessions, which are highly interactive and grounded in military practice, academic rigor, and practical applications. Faculty members are
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
top academic scholars and experts in leadership and ethics content; many of whom are graduates of West Point, have taught leaders of character at West Point and in other Army institutions, and have significant military experience. 2. Experiential learning and team building sessions that lever-
age the history and physical location of the Hudson River Valley and West Point and directly reinforce key leadership principles of strategy, communication, trust, and others. 3. Senior Advisors, who are retired General Officers, serve as coaches and mentors during the program and are available as resources to continue the leader development experience at client locations. 4. Keynote Speakers, who are inspirational and embody what it means to be a “Leader of Character.” TLDG offers both custom and open enrollment programs for leaders, and students of leadership, from corporate, not-for-profit, governmental, and educational institutions. TLDG has the leader development team to help grow leaders in a unique and inspirational way, and the Thayer Hotel at West Point is a powerful venue for any company training or meeting. For more information, contact 845-446-4731, ext. 7969.

Five reasons cyber criminals are looking at your business
D
espite what is reported by the media, the bulk of cyber attacks actually happen to small or midsized businesses. Attacks to companies of this size are much more costly than those that hit extremely large retailers or other corporations that have millions of customers. The goal of the attacks that take place now are focused on personal details, intellectual property, authentication credentials and the like. Here we’ll describe five reasons your business might be in more danger than you thought:
1- Your data could be more valuable than you think. It could be that criminals want your partner’s data, or maybe that of a sup-
plier. A few hops separate you from the real target; make sure you have the right measures in
place from a variety of angles. 2- Cyber attacks offer low risk and high rewards to criminals. Attackers are rarely caught or prosecuted for their crimes. Some malware is so sophisticated it can lay dormant for weeks before striking, and even clean up after itself once it has gotten the data it needed. 3- Let’s face it, you are an easy target. More than 40% of small to midsized businesses don’t see the value of proper security and well maintained IT infrastructure. 4- Your guard is down. In
a recent survey, 60% of small to midsized businesses don’t think cyber attacks are a threat to their organization and 44% don’t think strong security is a priority. 5- You don’t have the right defense mechanisms at your disposal. Having some virus protection and maybe a firewall installed is not enough to ward off today’s highly advanced and targeted attacks. So what can be done to prevent or mitigate the damage of these attacks? Definitely consult your IT manager or consultant and make
sure you put a layered defense plan in place. Take a look at your IT budget and then at the cost of hardware and software upgrades to prevent threats from entering. Compare the cost of upgrades to the total loss of your business if your sensitive data is stolen or used in criminal activity. This article was provided by Jaime Butler, Business Development Specialist at Integrated Enterprise Solutions, Inc. Health Quest has announced its recent investment into the superDimension i•Logic™ System using Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy® (ENB)™ technology, a lung navigation system designed to investigate lesions and abnormalities. In most cases it will replace more invasive surgical procedures to diagnose lung nodules, while reaching very distant regions of the lungs not previously accessible with more traditional bronchoscopies. “It is, essentially, a GPS for the lung, allowing pulmonologists and thoracic surgeons to diagnose lung nodules, determine whether or not a lesion is malignant, stage cancers more accurately, and eliminate the radiation exposure from the CT scans traditionally required for these patients. It is progressive and state-of-the-art, and we are very pleased to bring it to the Hudson Valley”, said Dr. Arun Agarwal of Putnam Hospital Center, the first physician at Health Quest to perform the procedure. “I am excited that we now have a less invasive way to obtain a lung biopsy from previously hard to reach distant areas of the lung, where more than two thirds of all the lung lesions are found,” said Rohit Shahani, Cardiothoracic Surgeon. The superDimension Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchosopy creates images of the lungs, and a clear visual path to facilitate effective diagnosis and biopsy. The technology will be available at both Putnam Hospital Center and Vassar Brothers Medical Center. he Adopt-A-Family Program was a huge success in 2013! 21 businesses and nine families “adopted” 30 local families that otherwise would not have been able to celebrate Christmas last year. Thanks to their generosity, 91 children received a visit from Santa. The Workforce Development Center would like to thank the individuals within these organizations and families for their tireless efforts to coordinate the collection, wrapping and delivering of the gifts. Their names are listed next to the business or family below. Helping so many families is a huge undertaking and requires a group effort. We would also like to thank those within the businesses and families that took the time to read the profiles and select an appropriate gift for each of the family members.
