ebruary is Heart Month; a time to focus on heart disease, its consequences, and steps that can be taken to prevent it. In recognition, the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is proud to present Dr. Kari Reiber, Dutchess County’s Commissioner of Health, to discuss risk factors for heart disease and share some insight into health from a pathologist’s viewpoint at the February Contact Breakfast on Wednesday, February 18 from 7:30-9 a.m. at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel.

Dr. Reiber was raised in Europe and earned her medical degree in 1982 from the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid. She went on to complete residency training in surgery and forensic pathology

in the United States. She enlisted in the United States Navy in 1990 and served three years as a medical examiner for the Armed Forces in Washington DC. She then served as a deputy medical examiner in New York City for 10 years. Reiber was appointed chief medical examiner in Dutchess County in September 2003 and then Commissioner of Health for a period of two years following Dr. Caldwell’s retirement in June 2013.

f you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that you’re a member of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. That’s great. We’re glad to have you, and as President and CEO Frank Castella Jr. said in his State of the Chamber address, our organization is only as strong as our membership is deep.

But are you as active a member as you could be? Hopefully you’re attending some of our events, because if not, I worry that you’re not getting the full value out of your Chamber experience.

Membership is what you make of it. You have to get involved, and that means being at our monthly breakfasts, networking events and educational seminars. By

so much more that there has to be one that suits your interests. Giving back on a committee is a great way to help grow your Chamber and make a real difference in our community at the same time.

Lastly, I hope you’re serving as a good ambassador for all that the Chamber does in the community.

International Women’s Day to be celebrated on March 7

T

he Women’s Leadership Alliance of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce will celebrate International Women’s Day on Saturday, March 7 with its annual march across the Walkway Over the Hudson.

Catharine Bond Hill, the President of Vassar College will deliver the keynote address. The morning will also feature Minister Luader Smith, founder of House of Hope.

The first to attend will receive a special handcrafted gift from Woman for Woman, a group of Cambodian women challenged with physical disabilities. In a country without social services, the purchase of these gifts by the WLA will support their program

for a full year.

Everyone is welcome to join us, so spread the word! This is a wonderful opportunity for young women, families and students to learn about women’s issues and for

all of us to share in the solidarity of spirit with women around the world.

Workforce’s Adopt-A-Family makes holidays happier for local kids

T

he 2014 Adopt-A-Family Program was wonderfully successful thanks to the overwhelming generosity of local businesses and families. In total, 20 businesses and 13 families “adopted” 31 local families and provided gifts for many children who

would have otherwise not had a visit from Santa this year.

The Workforce Development Center would like to thank the wonderful individuals, businesses and families who worked to make Christmas brighter for these households this past year. Their

efforts to collect funds, shop for gifts, wrap and deliver the gifts is truly appreciated and created lasting happy memories for our deserving families. Thank you from us and from each of the 81 children you made Christmas morning magical for!

I

’m committed to making sure the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is active in advocating on behalf of our members when it comes to legislation that will affect the business community. Here are some successes we’re celebrating and things we’re working on in 2015.

First, Governor Cuomo has recently amended the Wage Theft Reporting Act so that employers are no longer required to notify each employee of their salary in writing every 12 months.

We lobbied hard for this law, one that created needless paperwork for New York businesses, to be altered, and we and our partners were ultimately successful.

We continue to fight for repeal of the Item Pricing Law and Scaffold Law, two anti-business policies creating needless red tape. In the case of the Scaffold Law; it places an unjust liability on our construction companies.

This month, members of the Chamber’s Legislative Action Committee will be traveling to Albany on Scaffold Law Reform Day to make sure

our voices are heard.

Simply put, your Chamber recognizes that New York is a difficult state in which to do business. According to Forbes Magazine, it costs more to do business here than it does in 45 other states. We’ve got the highest income tax rates in the nation, the fourth highest worker’s compensation insurance rates, and the sixth worst property taxes.

I pledge to you that as long as I’m President of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, we will work every day to ease this burden. If you have any personal concerns or helpful ideas, please don’t hesitate to bring them to my attention.

Stay connected to WiFi on the go

W

e are a nation of people who always want to be connected no matter where we are and because of that, we have seen the introduction of turning your vehicle into a roving WiFi hot spot so you’ll never miss a minute of connectivity.

More and more automotive manufacturers are installing onboard high-speed cellular modems and other equipment to offer consumers access to the internet and in some cases, to allow over-theair software updates to the vehicles onboard computer. Using Bluetooth capability doesn’t allow for the streaming of video, but that’s certainly possible with WiFi. Auto manufacturers agree that not everyone needs this type of service, but for families or professionals who

maybe spending a lot of time on the road; this could be a life saver.

GM is currently providing customers with the option of data plans who are or aren’t OnStar customers through AT&T with low cost plan options. If customers are already using AT&T for other devices such as their smart phones, they have the option of adding a GM vehicle with WiFi to the wireless carrier’s Mobile Share Plan starting at $10 a month.

Sprint is working with Chrysler to offer a pay per day option, weekly options or monthly options that don’t require any sort of subscription and comes with unlimited data. Ford doesn’t offer built-in WiFi, but through their MyFord Touch system, you can connect to other WiFi hotspots if you’re near one or you

have the option to plug a mobile broadband modem into the car’s USB port; effectively creating a mobile hotspot in your vehicle using a data allotment you’re already paying for with the mobile broadband modem and avoid a separate charge just for the car.

Believe it or not, if you aren’t in the market for one of the newer, already equipped vehicles out there, you can buy an aftermarket addon for your current vehicle as well.

Manufacturers are expecting the number of WiFi vehicle users to grow from about 3 million vehicles globally in 2014 to more than 10 million by 2021.

MEMBER NEWSLINE The Mid-Hudson region is the home of a major contingent of comic book inkers, artists, writers and creators and Arts Mid-Hudson will mount a show to highlight the work of nine of these creative people from Feb. 13 through March 7 in the organization’s gallery at 696 Dutchess Turnpike, Poughkeepsie.

“Komic Kreators of the MidHudson Valley” will feature the work of Joe Sinnott, long-time inker of The Amazing Spider-Man Sunday comic strip; Ramona Fradon, best known for her work on Brenda Starr; Joe Staton, current Dick Tracy artist; Charles Barnett III, an inker who has worked on Thor, The Avengers and other comics; Terry Austin, inker of “XMen: Days of Future Past” upon which the 2014 movie is based; Eliot R Brown, penciler for the Avengers and Captain America among other Marvel titles; Fred Hembeck, cartoonist best known for his parodies of characters from major American comic book publishers; Herb Tempe, inker for Hulk and Wolverine; and, Liza Donnelley, New Yorker cartoonist and author.

The show will open with a preview party from 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb.13 for which attendees are encouraged to wear costumes. Tickets are $15 or 2 tickets for $25 for the preview party. Comic artists will be on hand to autograph work at the preview and at the grand opening on Feb.14. The show’s hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Grand Master Ounam Kwon, owner of KWON’S Martial Arts, has been teaching Martial Arts and participating in community events in Hopewell Junction for the past 12 years. He has now expanded his school by relocating his Martial Arts school to Poughkeepsie on Route 9 (across from the South Hills Mall).

KWON’s Martial Arts has an After school Program where they will pick up your child from their school and transport them safely to KWON’S Martial Arts. KWON’S Martial Arts also offers a Home School Program on Tuesday and Thursdays from 1:30-2:30 p.m. where all the family members are welcome to participate. They will be hosting a Spring Break Camp the week of March 30th and a Summer Camp for nine weeks starting on June 29 and ending on August 28.

Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue was recently awarded $1,500 in funding support from the Com-

munity Response Fund through the Community Foundation of Dutchess County. This grant money will be used to upgrade office equipment to better organize therapeutic programs and records.

The Community Foundation of Dutchess County is an affiliate of the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley, but initially grew out of The Area Fund, which began in 1969.

Guided by a local board of community leaders, monies raised for Dutchess County stay in Dutchess County. The board’s goals are to grow philanthropy in Dutchess County, raise money, establish new endowed funds and make grants to enrich the quality of life for Dutchess County residents.

In order to receive this grant, Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue had to go through an application process and provide detailed information about the non-profit and how the funds would be utilized.

The Hudson Valley Community Center (HVCC), situated west of Vassar College on South Grand Avenue in Poughkeepsie, is bringing back its popular swim program DIVE IN. The drop-in program allows children ages four and under to, with the company of a parent or caregiver, enjoy swimming in the HVCC’s heated indoor pool for just $5.00 per child. The parent or caregiver swims free.

DIVE IN is available from 10:00 am to 11:30 am each Thursday from January through April.

Volunteers take Foundation higher

T

he Chamber Foundation plays an important role in our community, serving youth in high school to adults hoping to better themselves personally and professionally. Our leadership, scholarship and youth development initiatives are second to none when it comes to building confidence, enhancing skills and providing financial assistance. As is the case for the numerous nonprofits through the region, the work of The Chamber Foundation is never-ending.

How do we make it happen?

How do we achieve positive results and success? The answer lies in the

extensive network of volunteers that not only give of their time, but also give their passion and heart. With nearly 100 volunteers throughout the year, each plays an important role in advancing The Chamber Foundation’s mission. In fact many of the volunteers have benefitted from The Chamber

Foundation and, as a result, found a passion for the organization.

From mentorship to program development, event planning to fundraising – every aspect of The Chamber Foundation involves volunteers. Most notable is The Chamber Foundation’s Youth Leadership Program that “staffs” 18 individuals to help mentor the over 90 enrolled students. These volunteers attend every Youth Leadership session and also meet outside of the program to help review and prepare for the following month’s session.

In short, we can not do it alone and The Chamber Foundation would not be where it is today - growing and thriving without the hard work of these dedicated individuals.

We do not take their work for granted and thank each of them for bringing out the best in all that we do and for letting The Chamber Foundation shine.

Health and Wellness Club introduces wellness challenge

T

he Health & Wellness Committee is pleased to announce the launch of The Wellness Challenge, its next major initiative to improve the health of our community members. This is a 10-week program combining easy lifestyle, nutrition and activity changes that anyone can make to improve his or her overall sense of wellbeing. Individuals that participate in the Wellness Challenge may even lose up to ten pounds in ten weeks!

Participants will be grouped in teams of ten, and led by a volunteer

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Team Captain.â&#x20AC;? Groups of family members, friends and co-workers are encouraged to band together, assign a captain and participate in the program. Team Captains will attend an orientation workshop, and then help motivate and inspire their team to stay with the Wellness Challenge. All participants will record simple metrics at the start and end of the program, as well as track daily meals, activity, and sleep habits, etc. and then make a weekly
