T

o all of the members of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, I’d like to say, thank you! We’re delighted to have you as part of the organization, and as President and CEO Frank Castella, Jr. said at the January Contact Breakfast, the focus this year will be on bringing more value to Chamber membership than ever. Ensuring you are as active a member as you’d like to be is one of the Chamber’s top priorities. Hopefully you’re attending events, because networking is essential to business and personal success, but Chamber membership is so much more than that. From marketing opportunities to unique partnerships, the Chamber has specific tools designed to bring more exposure to your business or organization. Membership is what you make of it. You have to be involved, which means taking advantage of

all the promotional opportunities available on the new website, considering sponsorship of an event or initiative, and utilizing the invaluable resource of the Chamber’s professional staff. I promise, they will help you make connections and you will see a distinct benefit. If networking gives you sweaty palms, consider getting involved and give back by volunteering for a committee. The Chamber has groups designed for women in business, for young professionals, for those committed to health and wellness, people who are concerned with legislative issues,

and so much more. The staff can easily help find one to suit your interests. A committee is a great way to meet new people, help grow your Chamber, and make a real difference in our community at the same time. Lastly, I ask you to serve as an ambassador for everything the Chamber does within the community. If you’ve seen success, help spread the word about this organization to non-members, send referrals by visiting dcrcoc.org/referrals, and consider sharing a testimonial—after all, positive customer reviews go a long way towards broadening the Chamber’s reach. Thanks again for being a member of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. I hope to see you at an event, soon. Rita McPeck is the SBA Business Sales Officer for KeyBank. T

hank you, to everyone who made it to the January Contact Breakfast and Annual Meeting. While the meeting portion and my address were brief, it was rewarding to see so many of you in the audience learning about all we accomplished in 2016 and are working towards this year. The complete text of my address is available online at dcrcoc.org. I would like to highlight some of what I am especially proud of, such as how we’ve taken your feedback and are working to bring added value to being a member through unique collaboration with various organizations and entities. We are your union, and we want to ensure you get the most out of being a part of this organization. At the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, we understand a lot of entrepreneurs often experience the challenges and rewards of owning a business alone. However, we want you to know we’re here for you. Networking and educational events offer a forum for individuals to share resources, experiences, advice, knowledge, and skills. A dedicated professional staff is here to help promote your business through marketing opportunities and partnership initiatives. Expert advisors are available for complimentary and confidential

consultations. We are tireless in our efforts to advocate to elected officials to streamline the planning and development process in our cities, towns, and villages. Our Chamber is fortunate to be part of a collaborative community. I am especially excited to announce a new opportunity to promote our members in print and online through a unique partnership with Poughkeepsie Journal Media. Every Monday, Chamber members and relevant community happenings will be featured on the new “Hudson Valley Business Scene page. This collaboration will provide a much-needed source of LOCAL business news for our media partner and an exceptional added value to our members. We acknowledge our members are invaluable to our success and their success can only help us fulfill our mission of growing our local economy and improving the community and business climate. I am excited for this year as we continue to add value to Chamber membership, listen to our members, and maintain our growth momentum.

Sincerely,

Frank M. Castella, Jr. President & CEO

Before 2016 when I joined the Dutchess County Regional ChaPEer of CoPPerce I was ErieĹ´y a PePEer of three other chambers. However, I left feeling like these organizations were not for me as I simSly Said the dues and e[Sected the beneĆ“ts to come to me without any real effort. When I joined this Chamber, I became an ‘active’ member, not just a member. I started attending the events and quickly realized the resource I had in the chamber staff—whatever I wanted or needed to start accomplishing my goals, they were willing to lend a helping hand in whatever capacity they were able. From the CEO, who made it a point to familiarize himself with ABC Go Digital’s product to the front desk staff, who epitomize service with a smile, or the Communications Department, who literally walked me around the room at my Ć“rst Contact Breakfast making introductions, or the Membership Department, who gave me tips on strategic approaches for potential clients. Of every staff person, I can say without a doubt I have always gotten the information, answers, and guidance I sought, and then some. If you own a business and have not yet joined the Chamber, you are missing out on some valuable opportunities to grow your business. All you have to do is join, be as active as you can, and just ask. I promise, you will not be disappointed.

T

he first day I walked into the Career Action Center, I had a feeling I wasn’t going to like it, but after a while I learned it was actually really fun. Over the past two years, The Leadership Connections Program has allowed me to connect with some very important people. For example, I met with a professional in the theater industry on how to pursue my singing career. He helped me prepare for a mock-audition with Half-Moon Theater and later helped me successfully apply for a scholarship to a singing camp called Capella Festiva. This program has been such a resource. The staff and volunteers are so kind and open-minded. I know I can go to Ms. Gobins when I’m having a bad day or need advice. As I’m going through the college process, I am grateful to have

help applying for scholarships and choosing which classes to take. This program has opened my eyes to many career paths, college options, and different perspectives on life as well as helping me make connections. Another example is when the program introduced me to AT&T who helped me get a phone for Christmas. Career Action Center is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Poughkeepsie City School District and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Heart rate and exercise, how do you match up? By Dr. John Quinn

T

he human body is constantly working to keep its system clean and efficient. The heart plays one of the most vital roles in keeping the body running, and an even more important role in exercise and fitness. During exercise, the heart works to increase the flow of oxygenated blood so muscles can produce the energy necessary to sustain activity. The higher the activity level, the harder the heart must work to deliver blood quicker. The heart contracts at consistent intervals, or beats. Understanding the importance of heart rate to exercise is crucial for maximizing performance and achieving goals such as weight loss and cardiovascular health. Depending on age, gender, and fitness level, during exercise, the heart increases the number of beats per minute (BPM) going from 60-100 BPM at rest to around 200 BPM. Knowing your resting heart rate is invaluable. Each morning, take an accurate resting heart rate and keep a log. This log will provide feedback on injury, illness, overtraining, and stress. It is also a simple gauge of improvements

in fitness level. In general, fitter people tend to have lower resting heart rates because a stronger heart works more efficiently. To gain the most from an exercise program, try to achieve a target heart rate — the level at which your heart is being exercised and conditioned, but not overworked. Under-training happens when a person’s heart rate is too low, resulting in a low-intensity workout, which will not burn enough calories to lose weight or build endurance or strength, thus taking significantly longer to see desired results. Over-training can be just as dangerous. Exceeding a target heart rate can lead to problems such as dehydration and consistently over-training risks infection, chronic pain, and even damage to the heart. Monitoring heart rate throughout a workout will avoid these complications. Target heart rate is different for every individual and is based on age, fitness level, and medical history. Healthy individuals should first calculate his or her maximum heart rate by subtracting age from 220. For example, a 30-year-old would subtract 30

13

Health

& Wellness

from 220 to get a maximum heart rate of 190 BPM. Then, use the maximum heart rate to calculate target heart rate and the needed exercise intensity:

performance. Improper calculation of target heart rates or poorly structured exercise programs can lead to injury, illness, and overtraining.
