The staff can easily help find one to suit your interests. A committee is a great way to meet new people, enhance your Chamber benefits, and make a real difference in our community at the same time. Membership is what you make of it. You have to be involved, which means taking advantage of and utilizing the invaluable
resources of the Chamber. I promise, the professional staff will help you make connections and you will see the benefits. Lastly, share your successes and be an ambassador for everything the Chamber does within the community. Help spread the word about this organization to non-members, send referrals by visiting dcrcoc.org/referrals, and consider sharing a testimonial— after all, positive customer reviews go a long way towards broadening the Chamber’s reach. hank you to everyone who attended our January Contact Breakfast and Annual Meeting. It is rewarding to see so many of you participating in our events and contributing to the Chamber’s many accomplishments of 2018. You can view the text of the State of the Chamber on our website. We want to ensure you get the most out of being a part of this organization. At the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, we understand many entrepreneurs and business owners often experience the challenges and rewards of owning a company alone. However, we want you to know we’re here for you. Networking and educational events offer a forum for individuals to share resources, experiences, advice, knowledge, and skills. A dedicated professional staff is here to help promote your business through marketing opportunities and partnership initiatives. Expert advisors are available for complimentary and confidential consultations. THE BOTTOM LINE
FEBRUARY 2019
Don’t cut the (cable) cord too fast By Jaime M. Butler
A
s a business owner, you may offer your customers the opportunity to relax in a waiting area and enjoy some television before receiving their scheduled services. At the same time, you may have been considering ways that you can cut expenses in 2019, so you can continue to offer your clients the best services possible while reducing your overhead. Considering the marketing in favor of a streaming service, you may be thinking that cutting your cable service is a way to reduce, but is it really true? Here are some things
to consider before you call up your cable service and make the switch. Chances are you have bundled your internet service with your cable for your business and possibly phone service through your local provider. If you reduce your plan to just internet service, you may miss out on savings you could receive from adding one or two new streaming services. Plus, if your internet provider has a monthly data limit, streaming TV will use more data than anything else. You need to make sure you are able to set up an unlimited data plan, but those plans typically have a higher cost than data-limited plans.
Don’t forget the art of negotiation. It may be that you can negotiate with your current cable TV provider to drop the bundled price by $10 or $20, if they know you’re considering cancelling. You should also investigate other area providers and what their pricing is for “just internet”—as another bargaining tool.
Most importantly, you want to make sure you have the right technology in your business environment if you decide to make this switch. Your cable box won’t be needed, but you’ll need to make sure you have some sort of smart TV monitor or a streaming device like a Roku or Apple TV monitor. You’ll also want to verify that your network infrastructure is able to handle the network traffic in addition to your day-to-day business
7
operations that utilize your established wireless network. Make sure you consult with your IT provider to compile a complete list of what you may need to prepare for this type of change to your infrastructure. Tips on leading a heart-healthy lifestyle
T
he Health & Wellness Committee is comprised of like-minded Chamber members working to create awareness of good health and wellness throughout the Hudson Valley. Whether you want to live a healthier lifestyle yourself, or want to help encourage healthier habits in others, there are actives steps you can take to achieve such during February—Healthy Heart month. Supporting good health is good for your businesses, employees, and our community!
Here are a few suggestions from our Health & Wellness Committee members: Concerned about your heart health? Simply increase your Omega-3 fatty acids. From a nutritional perspective it might sound counter-intuitive adding fats to support heart health, but healthy fats are necessary for optimal brain and body function. Omega 3's are a type of unsaturated fatty acid that reduces inflammation throughout the body.
Invest in a heart rate monitor to make sure you are working out efficiently in the following ways: • Within the proper aerobic zone • Keeping track of your heart's recovery rate • Keeping track of your progress ~ Bob Gorman, Gorman’s Garage
Inflammation in the body can damage your blood vessels and lead to heart disease, or strokes. Omega 3's have also been known to decrease triglycerides, lower blood pressure, and reduce blood clotting. Eating at least one to two servings a week of fish will increase your Omega3's. Our top fish choices are mackerel, sardines, salmon, herring, and anchovies. Other foods containing Omega 3's are chia seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, and non-GMO soybeans (edamame). You can also supplement with a high-quality Omega 3. ~ Alyson Chugerman, Attain True Health
Keep your heart sweet for your Sweetheart in February, by scheduling a chiropractic exam and adjustment! The heart, as all the major organs and systems, relies on the nerve system to convey directions for its function and health.
Along with exercise, a proper diet, healthy weight, adequate sleep, and stress release, it is vital to keep your heart functioning at its best with a healthy, open nerve flow. Do your heart a favor by having chiropractic adjustments! Your Sweetheart will thank you for it! ~ Bill Linacre, DC, Linacre Family Chiropractic Health & Wellness February is American Heart Month, as well as an opportunity to assess our daily routine and incorporate physical activity. Although we are never too old to begin some form of exercise, it is important to understand the warning signs of over exertion, which may necessitate a visit with a provider. The signs are: • Discomfort in your chest, arm, neck, or back which may occur or worsen during exercise • Irregular heartbeat, which may feel like

Networking in all the right places By Lisa Morris Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union
W
e all need to network to build our personal and professional brands. Expanding the scope and diversity of people you know can lead to increased business, as well as greater personal development and growth. A key step in proper networking is choosing which events to attend, Morris because not all are created equal. Time is a valuable commodity, so you should spend it wisely. Here are five questions to ask yourself, so you can network in all the right places. 1) Who will be there? – If you’re unsure what type of audience may be attending an event, pick up the phone and ask the organizer. A simple inquiry can let you know the types of contacts
you’ll meet. A phone call, rather than email, can also set you apart from others who may be attending. There’s a good chance the organizer will remember your call and help introduce you to others, should you decide to attend. 2) What group is sponsoring the event? – Consider the organizer’s goal for the event. A non-profit fundraiser with an emphasis on “fun,” may attract a completely different set of people than a business development breakfast focusing on economic achievements. 3) When will I need to attend? – Know the schedule that works for you. If you know you have trouble leaving the office mid-day, don’t RSVP for a lunchtime event. Consider the investment the sponsor is making. Whether you realize it or not, no-shows are noticed. 4) Where is it located? – Where an event is located can give
you a clue to its audience, but also consider how long it may take you to travel. If you’ll be meeting a number of contacts at a high-quality event for leads, it may be worth a little extra travel time to a distant location. 5) Why this event? – Consider what attracts you immediately about the event. If the guest speaker is someone relevant to your industry, it might be the perfect spot to meet some like-minded professionals. If the venue is a brand-new one in the area, attendance might be larger as you and others want to check out the new spot. Regardless, have a plan on whether you’ll focus on personal or professional development to help you find the right audience when you arrive. Finally, accept that not every event you attend will lead to a sale the next morning. Networking is building relationships, and
Relax. We got this.
the best relationships don’t happen overnight. Some professionals you’ll meet at events will be fantastic personal contacts; they will be people who can help your career grow. They may eventually become clients, but the important thing is to look at each new person you
meet as someone who can expand your horizons. Lisa Morris is the Assistant Vice President for Public Relations & Corporate Communications at Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, and a former ATHENA Awards recipient.

Workforce Connections announces new staff By Meredith Madden, Program Data Coordinator
G
reat changes are happening in the Workforce Connections Program! We are excited to announce two new case managers— already creating a buzz. Joe Flores is positive and laid- Flores back. His diverse experiences range from workforce development with youth formally
incarcerated, to community-based outreach helping families with medically fragile children. Joe has traveled extensively, working and providing community service from Compton, CA; Brooklyn and Harlem, NY; all the way to India and South America. He thrives focusing on individuals’ strengths, empathizing, and Watkins being non-judgmental. Dee Watkins is one of our
own, born and raised in Poughkeepsie. She was naturally drawn to human services, and began her career as a home health aide worker. Soon after she became a family educator, then worked to help local individuals mange and improve their mental health by finding stable housing and resources. Dee has a no-nonsense, straightforward style while striving to meet individuals where they are. She encourages setting goals while supporting that process. Please join us in welcoming Joe and Dee to the Workforce Connections Program.
Youth One Stop (YOS) is a comprehensive education and job-training program utilizing local resources to benefit at-risk youth in Dutchess County. The program is open to income-eligible youth, ages 14-24 who are facing obstacles inhibiting them from completing school, finishing their HSE or gaining employment. Youth One Stop is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board and The Chamber Foundation, Inc.
Youth One Stop paves way for future leaders By Rosemary Grabowska Youth One Stop Assistant Coordinator
I
n August of 2018, a young lady named Te’Reah Foxx came to Youth One Stop’s office. BOCES Adult Learning Institute (ALI) referred her to YOS as a resource that could help her pay for their Certified Nursing Assistant class. The Individual Training Application (ITA) awards scholarships of up to $5,000 to youth enrolled and active in YOS. The motivation for offering this opportunity is to ensure not only that they earn a certification in a particular vocation, but also that they are able to successfully obtain employment upon completion. YOS also considers that the chosen vocational training and career path should be one that the youth is personally motivated to accomplish. YOS case managers work with the youth to identify training opportunities aligned with
their interests. To help youth develop a realistic understanding of what their desired career requires, the program assigns employees in their field of interest to interview and shadow
during an average workday. This has proven to be very helpful. Youth have walked away from this process informed about their choice and have been able to make positive decisions for their career. Youth also compose a lifestyle budget to compare with the average earnings of the occupation they are interested in, to make sure they will be able to afford the lifestyle they wish to live. Needless to say, this application takes time to complete as well as for staff to review and approve; it is an opportunity for youth to demonstrate their commitment to this goal. Te’Reah maintained a steady focus on her ITA. She worked with her case manager to complete the application before the start of class in September. She thrived in the class, passing the certification exam on her first try, and she is now applying to facilities to put her CNA certificate to use.

Careers in law enforcement By Nancy Herrera Career Action Center Mentor
W
e welcomed in the new year alongside amazing partnerships at the Career Action Center. This year, students in the Career Actions Center’s Intense Mentoring Program are interning alongside the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department to learn about the opportunities law enforcement offers. By connecting our youth to programs like these, students can experience firsthand what their field of interest is like. It is also an opportunity build a positive relationship between the youth and law enforcement personnel. The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department, working in partnership with the City of Poughkeepsie Government, sponsors a 14-16 week Introduction to Careers in Law Enforcement Program. The program is designed to introduce young people to the various careers found in the law enforcement field. With the cooperation of several local, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies, they
deliver training using curriculum specifically tailored to engage hard-to-reach youth. This month marks the program’s 24th year since 1995. Lieutenant Melvyn R. Clauson, Sergeant Joseph Ciardi, and Detective Christopher Libolt oversee the program. Gabriel Castro, Kiev Thompson, Angel Rivera, and Abdul Azim are just a few of the students participating in the program. “Careers in Law Enforcement showed me what it takes to be a police officer,” said Kiev Thompson, a Poughkeepsie High School senior. The program also provides instruction that helps youth identify the requirements necessary for entry into various occupations, as well as the application procedures, required training, hiring procedures, and required credentials related to specific careers. Gabriel Castro, senior at PHS stated, “It was a great experience. I learned what fields I can go into and it taught me how much our police officers do for our community.” If you are interested in hosting a student, please contact Nancy Herrera at nherrera@dcrcoc.org.
