In that position, she worked to drive the organization’s pro-jobs agenda. Prior to joining The Business Council, Briccetti worked as a consultant and lobbyist for Powers and Company and as special counsel to then-Attorney General Cuomo. hile the winter months can entice one to hibernate, that never holds true at the Chamber. The Chamber is active as ever, and they are busy working on all the exciting things for spring (Yes, I admit, I am one of those people that count down the days until spring. As I write this there are only 56 more days to go!). After attending January’s Business and Basketball After Hours at Marist with the Hudson Valley Young Professionals, I am highly impressed with the caliber of our young professionals in our area. I am anxiously waiting to see who will be among our 40 Under 40 nominees this year! Equally impressive are the businesses which make up our community. Do you know an outstanding Hudson Valley business or organization? If so, please consider nominating them for our annual Headliner
Awards. There are five categories in which a business or organization can be nominated: Leadership in Organization & Community, Outside-the-Box Innovator, GreenFriendly Organization, Continued Growth in Current Economy and Customer Service. An organization can be nominated in a maximum of three categories. Nominations are due February 25 for achievements that occurred in 2012. The awards will be presented at our April Contact Breakfast. The committee has also been known to issue a “Special Award” for
an organization that really stands out, so please take a moment to visit our website and nominate a business or organization that has left a positive impression on you. Lastly, I would like to highlight our Membership Ambassador Committee. This committee does a tremendous job at helping our members find their comfort zone at the Chamber. In addition to helping new and existing members, they are dedicated to helping our community by hosting a food drive throughout 2013. So as you head out to the monthly Contact Breakfasts, please consider grabbing an item from your cabinets to donate, because when we think and give local first, we all benefit! Best wishes for an early spring! Jill Sammon is the DirectorSpecial Services for Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation.

y now, I hope you’ve taken the time to visit the newly redesigned Chamber website at dcrcoc.org. Neil Eisenberg of Design Intervention Studio did a tremendous job in crafting a modern, functional, and well-organized site that reflects the values and hard work of the Chamber. If you haven’t yet clicked over to see it, I highly recommend you stop by soon. The first thing you’ll notice on our new website is just how much information is available as soon as the page loads. The most important goings-on are highlighted in our main image rotator. Upcoming events are listed right alongside that and featured videos, Chamber news, photo galleries, and even news releases direct from our members are not far away either. Make sure you take advantage of our new member news feature. When your business has something to share – a new hire, an award, anything you want people to know about – submit it to our website. Most items will remain archived for over a month, and all items will rotate through the featured Member News block of our homepage, generating a large amount of exposure. And if the news you’re submitting is for a specific event you’re involved in, don’t forget to post it to our Community Events calendar accessible under the ‘Events’ tab in our main navigation. This open-source calendar is yours, member or not, to let
everyone know what you’re planning. The new dcrcoc.org is a great source of finding contact information too. If you need to get in touch with an elected official or government office, our Government Guide has that for you. All of our members are also searchable through a comprehensive database, meaning if you need a phone number for an accountant or you’re unsure of a good place to provide a service, our new website has you covered with just a couple of clicks. We’ve also made it so much easier for you to RSVP for events, submit nominations, join committees and more. Gone are the days of printing out and faxing in a piece of paper; now everything can be done through web forms. And speaking of committees, each one has it’s own dedicated space where you can keep up with meeting dates, upcoming events, and more. There’s so much our new website can do for you and your business. I hope you’ve enjoyed working with it so far. Please, do send us feedback about the site; we’d love to know what you think. Our website has a form you can use to get in touch!
Sincerely,
Charles S. North President & CEO

f you hear technology mentioned in the news, I bet you’ve seen the words “Server Virtualization”. Unfortunately for most of us, this is confusing and we don’t know why it is important to business owners. Let’s make it simple to understand by discussing 3 key benefits. Benefit #1 - Virtualizing a server environment consolidates your hardware and gives you flexibility. Don’t confuse it with the Cloud. You can have a virtual server environment in your office. It is a question of reducing the number of physical servers. You can control your IT spending with more precision by setting a budget for upgrades that makes sense for your business. Normally you have a physical server for your email, and separate physical servers for your domain controller and your applications or file storage. With a virtualized environment you only need one physical server and you can install multiple virtual servers, each running their own operating system. The environment will monitor and adjust resources where and when you need it most, reducing your overall cost of hardware. Since it can manage those
resources, you may be able to keep your physical server longer than the traditional three years. Benefit #2 – Hardware independence for increased flexibility and responsiveness. Traditionally, you had to have identical hardware available to you in the event that disaster struck and you needed to recover quickly, but the cost of this set up was expensive. With a virtual environment you have the ability to take a copy of your server as it exists today (virtualize the image) and run it on whatever hardware you have available. The virtual layer that your server image exists on can move to Dell, HP or any physical piece of hardware without having to worry about compatibility, which makes you much more flexible and responsive. Benefit #3 – A virtualized environment can be extended to your desktop machines. Not only can
you manage your server in a virtualized environment, but you can also offer your staff virtual desktops that are customized for them. They can use a ‘zero client’ (lower cost than a workstation) on their desk in the office and another PC to connect remotely. The desktop is the same no matter what. There’s no change in performance to open large applications or access other network resources. Just as with the servers, the resources are managed and given to those virtual desktops as they need it when they need it. Using a profile as a template, imagine the ease in which you can have your IT department prepare for new employees coming on board. You can’t deny the cost savings of not purchasing and maintaining workstations that have a tech shelf-life of 3-5 years before they’re obsolete. While we are it, don’t forget how “Green” the technology is as it reduces your physical footprint and your utility expenses too.
