s a single mother, Chakiya Littlejohn was struggling to support her children. She knew without a vocational or formal education, she would be stuck in a job with no future and would not be able to sustain her family. Littlejohn came to the Workforce Development Center last year, and with the help and guidance of her mentor, completed a training to become a licensed unarmed Security Guard. She then, with assistance from the Center, found employment with a local mall’s security team. When asked about her job, Littlejohn beamed. “I love my job and I love that I can provide for my children. I’ve learned to not wait to be the best I can be. Through the partnership between Dutchess County government, Dutchess County Department of Community and Family Services, and the Dutchess County Regional

Chamber of Commerce, Littlejohn and her family are well on the road to self sufficiency. Elizabeth Kwant is the Supervisor of Adult Programs, reach her at (845) 454-1700 ext. 1013 or email ekwant@dcrcoc.org.

he Chamber’s Workforce Development Center and Youth One Stop Business Service Initiative offers a host of programs that may benefit your staffing needs at no cost. If you have a current job opening, our employee match database will search for a possible job candidate who meets your job skills requirements. Participants in the Workforce Development and Youth One Stop programs are individually assisted by case mentors and attend a variety of job skills workshops. In addition, they are encouraged to build their career/ job portfolios through education, Certified Training programs and contact with local business employers. Training employees to specifically function within your business environment with job appropriate skills is invaluable. Internships, shadow days and volunteering as a speaker can offer you the opportunity to pre-screen candidates and start an on-target learning process specific to your industry.

Your involvement can allow for real-world experiences in the workplace, building self-confidence and growing a potential employee’s skill set. It is a win-win initiative! Wage subsidy programs such as Learn and Earn, On-the-Job Training and the Summer Youth Employment Program offer full and partially paid employee pro-

grams. Temporarily, your business would gain a trained employee who you could possibly hire!
