llow me to introduce myself – I’m Ori Brachfeld, and I am honored and privileged to be the 2014 Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. Those who know me, know that those words don’t really sound like me. I’m not an “official kind of guy. I am a small business owner, a member of the community, a parent. I am – basically – you, a fellow member of the Chamber. Only you are probably better looking. As the Chairman of the Board, it is my responsibility to work with the rest of the Board as well as Chamber President and CEO Charlie North and his staff to best

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR:

Ori Brachfeld serve the Chamber membership. Throughout the years I have worked closely with other business owners and the Chamber staff to take advantage of the resources they provide. I know that Charlie is always accessible to work with you to make your business better. If you have a question or problem, give him a call or any of the folks whose name and num-

ber are to the left of this column. They will help, as will I. There will be no bigger cheerleader for local businesses than me during the next 12 months. I will try to attend as many events and ribbon cuttings as possible, but between operating Dash, Lock & Key in Beacon and my new venture The Ugly Mug coffee shop in Poughkeepsie (opening this spring), you can understand I might be a little busy. Finally, I want to thank Jill Sammon of Central Hudson, our outgoing chair, for doing a tremendous job the last year. Hers are big (and prettier) shoes to fill, but I will do my best to serve the Board and our members.

Chamber President Charles S. North

f you’re confused about healthcare, you’re not alone. With all the new regulations being put in place, deadlines being delayed, websites malfunctioning, and rules changing, it’s a very uncertain time when it comes to making sure you and your family are protected in case of medical emergency. But it doesn’t have to be. Forget the health care exchange. Don’t dial a national 800-number or speak with a so-called navigator. You can get your healthcare questions answered and even purchase a new policy by simply Thinking Local First. There’s a host of great Chamber members available to meet your needs - all offering personalized service and products priced the same as anything available through the exchange. Simply visit our membership directory at dcrcoc.org and find the one that’s right for you. Complete Benefit Solutions, better known as COBESO, is the Chamber’s health insurance broker of record, and they have graciously offered their expertise to guide Chamber members through any

insurance questions or challenges they might have – and they’re doing it at no cost and with no obligation to purchase. If you’ve got a question, any question about healthcare, call COBESO today at 845-279-2742. And when it’s time to purchase, comparable plans from local brokers cost no more than what’s available on the exchange. Why Think Local First when it comes to health coverage? For the same reasons you do when ordering a pizza or hiring a plumber. Local insurance brokers hire local people, purchase from local vendors and make positive contributions to the community. So don’t fret about health insurance. Get the answers and the products you need direct from a local source and turn your confusion into the confidence and peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re protected.

Ski trip offers great fun, exercise

W

e have been a part of the Health and Wellness Club since its inception, and we were able to help plan and participate in the club’s first annual ski trip last February at Jiminy Peak. The event was planned to attract Chamber members, the community and family and friends of the newly formed Heath and Wellness Club. We immediately thought it was a great opportunity to alert our core group of clientele. We gear some of our programs toward

specific conditioning, which can be achieved by participating in activities our clients enjoy. We shared information about the ski trip with our clients in hopes of getting them more excited to strength-train. On the day of the event we did not know what to expect, as neither of us had skied before. We were pleasantly surprised at the ease of the trip – riding in a coach bus to the resort and then locating equipment to rent, which ended up being a breeze. The flow of the day made the ski trip enjoyable. We took a group lesson that was meant for six people,

but we ended up being the only takers. The staff at Jiminy Peak was extremely helpful, to us especially, being that it was our very first time. We had no trouble locating staff once we were on the mountain, and our instructor was exceptional and taught a great lesson. The day ended with a light snack before boarding the bus back to Poughkeepsie. The group that went was great – tired in the early morning but very lively by day’s end. We were glad to have been part of the first annual ski event, and we look forward to the next one in February 2014.

Thousands of people in our local communities face food insecurity and hunger throughout the year, but with the help of organizations like the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, many of those who might otherwise go without food have a place to turn. That is why CDPHP® is proud to once again support the Regional Food Bank’s BackPack Program through the annual CDPHP Holiday Appeal. The program, which provides nutritious, easy-to-prepare foods to children in need in grades K-6, has grown tremendously over the past year, now serving 1,000 children in 42 schools across 14 counties. Each Friday, these students receive a backpack filled with food to take home over the weekend. Throughout the month of December, CDPHP matched donations, dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000. All funds designated for the 2013 CDPHP Holiday Appeal will go toward the BackPack Program.

Take that, auto correct! Maybe you have a younger

child who isn’t ready for the responsibility of carrying a cell phone so you can keep track of their whereabouts or make calls. It could be a good time to bring home a FiLIP. This is a wrist watch looking, generic cell phone that can be used by younger children with ease. It allows the child to make or receive calls, but only from a select set of numbers that can be programmed into the unit itself and a limited amount of texts. It also has a GPS tracking feature so you can be aware of your child’s location at
