After being involved with the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce for over six years, Charlie North, Audra Gerty, Gloria Cukar and the entire Chamber staff never cease to amaze me. From all that the Chamber has to offer its members to all the Chamber does to benefit the community, I am thrilled to be Chair for 2013. I would like to commend Frank Castella for the tremendous role he played as the 2012 Chair. Frank is an outstanding example of a local businessman who wholeheartedly cares
about his community. Frank never hesitates to lend a hand, both personally and professionally, whenever there is a need. I feel so very fortunate to have been able to learn from him. Frank, thank you. To share some perspective from being behind the scenes, the staff MESSAGE FROM Chamber is comprised of THE CHAIR: individuals that their roles Jill Sammon view with passion and treat it as a lifestyle, rather than a job. This dynamic team continues to look for new and innovative ways to benefit their members. In 2013, the Chamber will roll out a newly
designed website. Additionally, look for some exciting changes to our signature events; I hope many of you plan on attending. There are so many ways you can participate in all the Chamber has to offer. Consider nominating your favorite business to be recognized with a Headliner Award. Nominations are due February 25 (see page 15 for more). Or perhaps recognize an impressive young leader by nominating them for a Forty under 40 Shaker Awards (see page 15). Both of these awards are a wonderful way to recognize and highlight our local talent. I am honored to be the Chair of this dynamic organization for 2013, and I am looking forward to seeing many of you over the coming year! Jill Sammon is the Director-Special Services for Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation.

Protecting your business from disaster

A
t this time of year, I always like to look back and take stock of our Chamber, and look ahead to the plans we have for the next 12 months. It’s satisfying for me to recall all our successes in 2012, including: • A full slate of high-profile events, such as one of the best Balloon Festivals of recent memory and our very popular Business Expo in Fishkill • All the ribbon cuttings we performed to celebrate new businesses and significant milestones • The accomplishments of our Chamber Foundation, which awarded more than $48,000 in scholarships this past year • Innovations such as online ribbon cuttings, where we produced multimedia presentations for those members who might not necessarily have places of businesses to visit • Strong advocacy and the access we gave our members to your elected officials • The fine contributions of our Workforce Development Center But while it’s rewarding to look back on 2012, it’s time to look ahead to 2013. We’ll do just that at our January Contact Breakfast and Annual Meeting, where I will give the State of the Chamber speech. There will be plenty of news
and information shared on the morning of January 16, but suffice it to say: the state of our Chamber is as strong as ever. We have plans for bigger and better events, many informative educational seminars, vibrant committees and even more member services. We also will be unveiling the new design of our website in January. You are going to love it – it’s so easy to use, interactive, searchable, connected to all our social networks, full of pictures and video, and clean navigation. I can’t wait for you to see it! And of this that we have planned is in service of you. I’ll say it again: The state of our Chamber is strong, and that is a testament to our members, friends and partners in the various municipalities of Dutchess County, local government, and the terrific staff with whom I work on a daily basis. We are looking forward to a great 2013, and I want to wish you and your families a very happy, safe, and prosperous new year! Sincerely,
Charles S. North President & CEO

eteorologists have a very difficult job. There are so many tiny things that affect such large changes in the weather, who would ever want the task of predicting what Mother Nature was going to throw out next? As some areas are still recovering from Hurricane Sandy, we all continue to hear stories about home owners and business owners who really didn’t think this storm would have been responsible for some of the devastation it caused. What about your business? Are you prepared to take on a natural disaster? Statistics show that even without Mother Nature’s help, one out of three servers will fail in a year. Typically this is due to human error but that can equate to $150,000 in downtime after a system failure. What costs do you think Sandy has racked up for
some businesses? Far more! Now more than ever, preparing for the worst is a critical business strategy, but this can also be a path towards growth and prosperity. Here are some steps to consider as you develop your plan to keep your business running, no matter what: • Be Prepared – Develop action plans that mitigate risk and accentuate your strengths and prepare you for future infrastructure upgrades/modifications • Build your A-Team – Consider intelligence, attitude and aptitude vs. skill, experience and

Business Education Seminar: Business plans
Start the new year with an investment in your business: an upto-date written business plan. If you have previously created a plan, it’s time to update it for 2013. If you don’t have one for your business, this is a great time to create one. John Moriarty, Small Business Development Center Counselor, will help us understand why a business plan is so important, who uses a business plan and how the plan
can help you manage your business to achieve success. The business plan is a key management tool. It helps you set direction, monitor progress and ensure linkage between your current operations and strategic direction. There will be time for your questions. The Business Education Committee presents this seminar on Thursday, January 24
from 7:30 a.m.-9 a.m. at the Chamber offices, One Civic Center Plaza in Poughkeepsie. It is sponsored by Gellert & Klein, P.C. It is complimentary for Chamber members and non-members, but please register by going to dcrcoc.org or calling 845-454-1700 ext. 1000.
Networking opportunities coming in January Early Bird Connections will take place on Friday, January 11 at The Daily Planet Diner, 1202 Route 55 in Lagrangeville. This is an early morning speednetworking event that allows Chamber members the opportunity to deliver a strategic 2-minute promotional pitch to all participants. It’s fast, it’s fun and, most importantly, it produces results.
The workshop is provided to 20 guests and is complimentary thanks to our sponsor, QB Collision. Attendance is industry-exclusive, so sign up early. Then on Tuesday, January 29, there will be a Chamber Connections event, from 4-6 p.m. at Coppola’s Bistro, 4167 Albany Post Road in Hyde Park. It is sponsored by Ulster Savings Bank. Chamber Connections is a timed
networking event with 40 business representatives in non-competing categories. There will complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar available. Only telephone or email reservations will be accepted for these events. If you are interested, please contact Membership Director Christine Desmoni at 845-454-1700 ext. 1009 or Christine@dcrcoc.org.

The collaboration that comes from both of these projects provides invaluable lessons and insight into leadership, volunteerism, and project management. Outside of these two major programs, The Chamber Foundation continues to build connections between students and our community in numerous ways including: College Campus Tours, Spring Golf Mentoring and Students Making Connections. Each of these miniprograms gives select area high schools the opportunity to invite their students to connect with local business professionals and learn about real word experiences beyond the classroom. For many, these opportunities can be remarkable – something that they might not be able to experience otherwise.

The Adopt-A-Family Program was a huge success in 2012! Twenty-one businesses and 11 families “adopted” 35 local families that otherwise would not have been able to celebrate Christmas this year. Thanks to their generosity, 87 children received a visit from Santa. The Workforce Development Center would like to thank the organizers within these organizations and families for their tireless efforts to coordinate the collection, wrapping and delivering of the gifts. Their names are listed next to the business or family below. Helping so many families is a huge undertaking and requires a group effort. We would also like to thank the individuals within these businesses and families who took the time
to read the profiles and select an appropriate gift for each of the family members. Many of these businesses and families offer their support year after year. Adopt-A-Family is not simply a hand-out, it is a truly a hand-up. The families who receive the gift of Christmas for their children realize that they are not alone. There are people who are rooting for them to succeed. This year we received calls from families who were helped in the past offering to help another family. For us, that is truly going “full circle”. Thank you so much for your support. It is appreciated. – Louise McLoughlin, Vice President of Workforce Development at the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce
