t this time of year, many look back on intentions, dreams, and goals from the start of 2016. By taking stock of the successes and perhaps some of the goals missed, we are able to begin to shape our intentions for the New Year and years to come. Robert Fritz, a pioneer in the field of Structural Consulting, is the founder of Technologies for Creating, Inc. Fritz outlined a way of achieving desired outcomes (or goals), which he calls a “Structural Tension Chart.” This chart helps individuals incrementally move toward health-related, or any other goals. To begin, develop an outcome in as much detail as possible; this is the desired result at the end. For example, to become

healthier, first determine an ideal weight, Body Mass Index, waist size, and levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar, and blood pressure as well as any other concerning health markers. Place this outcome on the top of a sheet of paper. Next, on the bottom of the page, determine “current reality.” For example, list current weight, BMI, waist size, and health marker levels. The difference between the two values creates what Fritz calls “structural tension.” Shift toward the desired goal by listing and completing small, incremental actions in between them on your sheet of paper with a deadline to maintain forward progress. Listing the steps to take will naturally lead to your goals. For example, Dr. Wayne Andersen, a leader in creating

organization. The representative from the event sponsor will likewise have the opportunity to present. Guest presenters will be chosen at random from attendees regis-

tered at least one week in advance. In order to diversify these events, members are limited to attending a maximum of two and presenting at one Network, Present, & Refer events per year. In an ongoing effort to accommodate members’ schedules, events will be held quarterly either in the morning at various locations or in the evening prior to a Business After Hours. Thanks to our generous sponsor, this event is complimentary to attend, but registration is required. Call (845) 454-1700, ext. 1000.

Thank you for making 2016 a great success!

A

s New Year begins, I can’t help but reflect back on 2016. It has been a privilege and pleasure to serve and I cannot wait for this coming year and all the wonderful things we have planned. From revamped networking events such as the Network, Present & Refer to implementing new tools for our members to market and promote themselves, this year promises to be exciting! 2016 has been a successful year! We were named Chamber of the Year by the New York Business Council and we introduced a new, user-friendly website. We also saw victory in many of our advocacy efforts including repeal of item pricing laws and negotiating a lower minimum wage than New York City. This Chamber is part of a winning team of business owners and organizations who, together, can do great things. Moving into 2017, we will remain strong, working with elected officials on behalf of you, the business community. I encourage you to visit our Legislative Action Committee online for more information on all of our ongoing efforts. I’d like to thank the Board of Directors, the staff, and especially you, the members, for your continued support. I hope you all have a safe, happy and prosperous New Year.

Today, The Arc of Dutchess provides diverse services across the age spectrum in every corner of the county. Watch out for winter depression

f your mood takes a hit during the wintery months, you may be among the 5 to 10 percent of adults across the U.S. who suffer from a winter depression, says Kenneth Oclatis, Ph.D., Director of Outpatient Mental Health Services and Special Programs at MidHudson Regional Hospital. “Patients experiencing a low mood, and who may also be

sleeping or eating more to comfort themselves, can head off depression by using behavioral activation,” Oclatis says. “This simply means getting out of the house, going for a walk, and trying to interact with people more frequently.” For more acute cases of winter depression, known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), Dr. Oclatis

says it’s important to seek treatment. “For patients who can’t just bootstrap themselves out of it, it’s time to see a mental health professional,” he said. Dr. Oclatis urges anyone dealing with winter depression to “become more actively involved

with other people, engage in more physical activity, and find things that bring more fulfillment and enjoyment into your life.” To learn more about behavioral health services offered at MidHudson Regional Hospital, visit MidHudsonRegional.org.

Local generosity spreads holiday joy

T

he holidays are a wonderful and fun-filled time of the year. With family gatherings and joyful activities, it is easy to forget that for some, the holidays are filled with stress and even sadness. The families of the Workforce Development Center often feel the stress of the season, and many worry about how to provide the Christmas they want to give their children. Through the amazing generosity and giving spirit of our Chamber community, this year, our participating families did not have to feel the worry. Instead, our many Santas delivered a holiday filled with joy and laughter. The staff of the Chamber would like to thank all of our generous donors. Thank you for giving our families a holiday that they will cherish forever. The Chamber Ambassador Committee

Achievement Program helps professionals grow, succeed By Crys McCuin, Executive Director, The Arc of Dutchess, Career Achievement Program Committee Member

A

s a new year begins, many of us will set personal goals, embrace new opportunities, and commit to making a difference in our lives and the lives of others. The Chamber Foundation’s Career Achievement Program offers a unique opportunity to accomplish all of that and more. The program, part of the Professional Development Programming of The Chamber Foundation, is dedicated to cultivating professional growth and development for individuals who have made the decision to challenge themselves to reach the next level in their ca-

reer. Community volunteers serve as mentors working with professionals on self-identified goals for a yearlong mentorship. “The Career Achievement Program has … given me the opportunity to work with a mentee and learn what challenges they face as well as what successes they achieve. Those experiences have broadened my insights and have allowed me to be a better leader,” said mentor Diane L. Nameth, Vice President, Sr. Relationship Manager, Commercial Lending at M & T Bank. Nameth’s mentee, Kristin Westervelt, Officer, Senior Learning and Development Business Partner for Tompkins Financial, said being paired with someone else in finance made a difference.

Micah Bennett and his mentor Rebecca Simpson

Ashley Gannon and her mentor Crys McCuin “The Program has allowed me to explore my future goals and steps to take to get there. [Diane] has reinforced the things I know I am doing right and shared ideas and plans to help me be even more successful,” Westervelt said. The Career Achievement Program is seeking the next class of

mentors and mentees with an official kick-off scheduled in the spring. All interested professionals should visit ChamberFDN.org to submit an application and learn more. Applications ae due by March 1st. Call (845) 454-1700, ext 1026 with questions. On behalf of the professional

Theresa Giovanniello and Bridget Laubacker development programming committee, we look forward to helping the men and women of our community achieve success and reach their goals.

Program puts leadership skills to work By Rebecca Oberle and Phil Rottkamp, Youth Leadership Students

T

he Chamber Foundation’s Youth Leadership Program teaches high school students how to put leadership skills to work to run a company and prepare for the future. Every month, students meet and are given insight as to what running a company and being a leader is like. At the beginning of each meeting, experts on a variety of topics help students learn skills they can then apply in life. Following this educational presentation, students

are split into two tracks. Our track – Track 1 – is working on the Junior Achievement company model. We began by forming five departments: business development, finance, human resources, marketing, and production. Each must work together for the company to run smoothly. After brainstorming and researching possible products to sell later in the program and selling stock to fund production, we have decided to sell water bottles with fruit infusers under the company name Refreshed Water Company. In the coming months, com-

pany representatives will attend Chamber events and be out at other locations selling our product. We hope you will support us!

Smarter technology elevates phone photography By Jaime Butler

U

sing a smartphone camera to take photos is becoming more common, but users are limited to the built-in features on their iOS or Android phones. New applications are allowing smartphone shutterbugs to take photography to the next level. Here are a few of the options available to smartphone users:

ProCamera The ProCamera iOS app offers professional-level image controls, making a standard smartphone feel like a single-lens reflex camera. With just a few taps, users can adjust exposure, enable flash, and display a grid to compose a better shot. It even has an anti-shake feature to prevent blurring.

Adobe Photoshop Fix Adobe Photoshop Fix gives smartphones the photo-editing capabilities of the standard Photoshop software, including the ability to adjust shadow intensity and contrast or add effects. There is also a tool to smooth images and add shape-modifying effects. The app offers built-in help and is available for both iOS and Android devices. Camera FV-5 For Android users, Camera FV-5 offers many of the same features as ProCamera. It also includes a live histogram, burstmode, exposure bracketing, and time-lapse imagery. Users can also choose from a selection of file types when saving images.
