Smythe leaves Community Foundations
Helping people craft ways to give back to their community has been “challenging and all-consuming,” but it could not have been more rewarding. That’s how Nevill Smythe summed up his eight plus years as vice president of programs at the Community Foundasmythe tions of the Hudson Valley as he prepared to step down from the job. Smythe left his post June 15. His successor, Jennifer Killian, was named director of programs and began working on May 14. Smythe is also the outgoing chair of The Chamber Foundation, Inc. Andrea Reynolds, president and
CEO of the Community Foundations said, “I am grateful for his intelligence, diligence and support. Nevill has raised the visibility of the Community Foundations through his work, his many contributions and his sheer passion for the community and the Community Foundations. We’ve been fortunate to have him.” Tim Dean, president of Marshall and Sterling and current board chair, called Smythe “a true professional who we will truly miss. Nevill has worked tirelessly to promote our mission.” Killian said she was thankful for the guidance Smythe had provided as she began to assume her new role at the Community Foundations. “I know I have big shoes to fill as Nevill moves on to the next chapter of his life,” she said. “I look forward to a long and successful tenure at the Community Founda-
tions and the opportunity to make a positive impact on the communities we serve.” Smythe said he had always focused on the needs of the donors and the causes they chose to support. “It’s all about the donors and the recipients – I’m just the conduit,” he said. “Facilitating those partnerships has been thoroughly enjoyable.” For more than 40 years, Community Foundations has been a driving force for philanthropy in the region, distributing funds from thousands of donors and connecting people with causes that matter. Community Foundations and its affiliates administer more than $35 million through 525 charitable funds. Last year the agency accepted more than $3 million in donations and awarded $1.8 million in grants and scholarships.

lot of people seem to think business slows down in the summer, but I’m not one of them. There’s no question that taking time away from the office and spending it with friends and family is important, but so is making sure to use that time to Think Local First, and we at the Chamber are hard at work putting together a summer itinerary that lets you do just that. We just served up another spectacular Breakfast of Champions showcase. If you weren’t able to sample some of the best cuisine in the region, why not treat yourself and your family to a great meal at any of the fine restaurants in Dutchess County? Better yet, make an evening out of it by first stopping by one of our Balloon Festival launches on July 6 or 7. There are locations all around the area and undoubtedly one is close to you. Or perhaps you’re an early riser and want to check out our 6 a.m. launches over the Hudson River from the Hudson River Rowing Association docks or the Walkway Over the Hudson on July 7 and 8 and grab breakfast afterwards. Whichever you choose, you’re sure to have a memorable day. All the launch

sites and times can be found on pages 8-9 and on our website. This year, when you’re thinking Balloon Festival, remember that our first-ever Think Local First Consumer Expo is happening right alongside it. On Saturday, July 7, visit the Poughkeepsie Galleria between noon and 5 p.m. to browse the best and most unique consumer products and services the Hudson Valley has to offer. Like the Balloon Festival, admission is free. And speaking of balloons again, we’re launching right from the Galleria parking lot that Saturday night at 6 p.m., so join us for that too. Our region offers so much to do this summer season that there’s no reason not to make your vacation a staycation! There’s a whole section on our website dedicated to great things to do this time of year – just click on Summer Fun under the Members tab and go have some fun in the sun while Thinking Local First. Forty-two teachers and 20 students from public and private schools throughout the Hudson Valley received nearly $70,000 in grants and scholarships at Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley’s 27th annual Partnership in Education Ceremony. More than 100 educators, students, and Community Foundations volunteers and staff attended the reception at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel. Since the endowments for teaching excellence were first established in 1985, Community Foundations has distributed more than $900,000 to schools in Dutchess, Ulster, Putnam and Orange counties. “This endowment is called the Fund for Excellence in Education, and it is just that,” said Tim Dean, chair of the board of trustees of Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley and president of Marshall and Sterling Insurance in Poughkeepsie. Serving all of Dutchess, Ulster and Putnam counties, the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley channels much needed support to the community through grants and scholarships. The Foundation’s purpose is to connect people who care with causes that matter. For information about charitable giving through the Community Foundation, grant programs, or to obtain a copy of the organization’s Annual Report, call the Foundation at 845-452-3077 in Dutchess and Putnam or 845-338-2535 in Ulster; email cfhv@cfhvny.org or visit the website www.cfhvny.org. Keep cool – don’t overheat your IT infrastructure
M
ost business owners that have a larger server room to support their business understand that a considerable amount of cooling is required to prevent overheating of their necessary equipment and possible all-out hardware failure. However, there are little-to-no standards for this type of set-up in place, and often those additional spaces outside the IT server room are forgotten about until it’s too late and hardware fails causing critical data loss. In general, IT equipment vendors recommend not exceeding 104 degrees in an IT server room/ closet, but in reality the range should be between 68-77 degrees for optimal performance and for hardware not to fail. Think about heat as something that needs to be removed instead of how much cold air you can fill into a space. There are five ways you can remove heat and they vary in their performance, limitations and cost: • Conduction – it flows through walls

• Passive venting – it can flow to cooler air via a vent or grille with no fan or air-moving device • Fan-assisted venting – it can flow to cooler air with the help of a fan or air-moving device • Comfort cooling – the building’s AC system helps to move the warm air to cool air • Dedicated cooling – there is a specified AC system in the IT/ server closet to remove hot air Review the pros and cons of each and decide what’s best for you and your business, but always remember that cooler is always better. hen the Rutberg Basso Law firm started, as simply Rutberg Personal Injury Law in Poughkeepsie in 1999, its founder, Marty Rutberg, had one goal: to help injured people and their families. Through years of success on behalf of clients and the expansion of his practice to three additional locations, that commitment to representing the best interest of his clients has never wavered. More than a decade later, the firm’s personal injury lawyers earned have an outstanding reputation become and both respected and much sought-after names in the legal community, so much so that the firm expanded to offices in Utica and Monticello, NY. In 2012 Rutberg Personal Inju-
ry Law expanded again, when respected trial attorney John J. Basso joined the firm and brought another office location in Newburgh. Though the firm’s name became Rutberg Basso Law Firm, its tireless work on behalf of personal injury victims has not changed. Rutberg Basso Law Firm is known not only for achieving significant injury verdicts for its clients but also for its unwavering dedication to community service. The firm has consistently supported the Newburgh Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, the American Cancer Society’s Hudson Valley Birthday Bash celebration and Dutchess Outreach, as well as many other non-profit organizations. Both Rutberg and Basso earned recognition in “Super Lawyers,” the prestigious listing that rates attorneys based on research, personal achievement and peer recognition. The entire team of staff attorneys is justifiably proud of having earned impressive settlement and verdict victories, and is available for those in need. Contact the Rutberg Basso Law Firm at (845)4860300 if you or a family member has been injured.

T
he mysterious ruins of the Bannerman Castle stand sentinel on tiny Pollepel Island, and are seen in passing by thousands of commuters every day on the busy Metro North rail line. But the castle offers much more
than a pretty view. Steeped in history, Bannerman’s is also alive with current events.
Originally built by Francis Bannerman in the style of a Scottish Baronial palace in 1901, the
site later was used for munitions storage during and after World War I. Bannerman Castle has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982. Today, thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers, Bannerman Castle boasts a variety of entertainment: Tours of the castle are available through the fall. Special events -- including the Fourth of July Picnic Bash; performances of the musical “Showboat,” on July 7 and 8; the annual Music Lunch Box concerts featuring a variety of talented musicians; and “Poetry through the Ages,” on July 28, featuring actor and playwright Carey Harrison -- will all take place this summer. The final event, featuring gourmet
meals prepared by five prominent local culinary artists, is the Hudson Valley Chefs Farm Fresh Dinner, scheduled for September 8. The nonprofit organization, Bannerman Castle Trust, hopes that the event proceeds -- along with donations -- will provide the funds necessary to continue restoration of the Castle to fulfill its potential as a significant tourist attraction. For more information on the island and its many special events, visit www. bannermancastle.org or call (845) 831-6346. Want to donate to the ongoing restoration effort? Send your support to The Bannerman Castle Trust, Inc. P.O. Box 843, Glenham, NY 12508.
