According to the FDR Presidential Library, the $35 million renovation has improved drainage, modernized the plumbing and electricity, replaced the sheet metal roof with a slate one, enhanced security and
fire protection, created an entirely new HVAC system, and made the library and museum completely accessible for those in wheelchairs. had to take another glance when I looked at my calendar: how is it possible that we are halfway through 2013? This year has been moving at lightning speed, perhaps because the Chamber has kept me so busy this year with all of their events! I am still reveling in the Women’s Leadership Alliance’s (WLA) latest event, “An Evening with Barbara Corcoran.” I have to admit, I don’t often have the opportunity to watch television, so I wasn’t sure what this Shark Tank was that everyone was talking about. It wasn’t until I made the connection with The Corcoran Group that I appreciated how dynamic an individual Barbara Corcoran truly is. I found Barbara to be enlightening and empowering, and I was amazed at her ability to be engaging and
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR:
Jill Sammon come across as genuine without taking herself too seriously. Barbara is an inspiring leader who has triumphed in the face of adversity. Her enthusiasm was infectious and I hope all who attended left feeling energized by her. I would like to applaud the WLA for bringing such a powerhouse to Poughkeepsie to share her wonderful wisdom. Congratulations to Chairperson Irene Andujar and the entire WLA for an amazing event. The WLA is a network of professional women who help sup-
port the leadership and professional and economic growth of their peers throughout the Mid-Hudson Valley, and with this successful event, they did just that. I have grown accustomed to seeing many familiar faces at Chamber events. While it’s always wonderful to see those friendly faces, it was very refreshing to see others in the community come out to hear from Barbara Corcoran and see the benefit from the hard work the Chamber does in the community. I commend the Chamber for not only providing valuable events for their members, but for providing these events to the entire Hudson Valley and beyond! I’m already looking forward to seeing you at the next big event. Jill Sammon is the Director-Real Property Services for Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation.

T
hrough the Workforce Development program at the Chamber, we have a great working relationship with Dutchess County and the D.C. Department of Community and Family Services (DCFS). While we partner with them regularly to accomplish many things, I want to share one particular story of success with you. In previous years, DCFS worked with a California-based service to offer local TANF-eligible youth the opportunity to take part in a two-day computer camp over the summer. It was a fine and valuable program, but it didn’t sit right with Theresa Giovanniello, the Deputy Commissioner of DCFS, that the program wasn’t utilizing the local community, so she called the Chamber. To make a long story short, I’m exceptionally pleased that this year, through a partnership with the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce and Integrated Enterprise Solutions, Inc., our IT provider, the 2013 “Teen Computer Zone” program will be run entirely by local entities. In August, selected high school juniors and seniors will participate in a variety of
interactive computer classes, including maintenance and usage of a laptop computer, Intro to Word and Excel, and social media etiquette. Sessions will also include the development of a resume, a personal budget and preparing and submitting online employment applications. Upon successfully graduating from the two-day program, each student will be awarded their own laptop, complete with software, peripherals and a printer. They will have modern computer technology and better access to educational materials, employment opportunities and college courses. As a result of Theresa thinking that there could be a better way -- a local, way -- and the hard work of the Workforce Development staff to bring everything together, this year we’ll be able to welcome 15 students to the Teen Computer Zone program and make a greater impact on the local community. That my friends, is what Think Local First is all about!
Sincerely,
Charles S. North President & CEO

A note about parking when visiting Poughkeepsie Due to the construction of the Poughkeepsie Transit Hub, visitors to the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce office as well as the businesses of 1 Civic Center Plaza (including the Hud-
son Valley Federal Credit Union on Market Street) may have difficulty accessing parking. The Market St. entrance to the public garage will be closed through late July. The facility will
remain open and operational, however all traffic must enter via the Garden Street gate accessible from the westbound arterial. Vehicles will still be able to exit onto Market Street.
Smart Card discounts on website
DCRCOC.org has a new page where all Smart Card discounts can be seen. You can search for them by business name, category or even a keyword. Chamber members may also now submit their own Smart Card discount offer by filling out a simple template right on our website. Add your offer, a coupon, even an expiration date. Members and their employees just need to carry their Smart Card, show it at these businesses and receive the discount mentioned. That’s it! What a great way to save money, meet other Chamber businesses and “Think Local First!” Don’t have your Smart Card or need a new one? Call Nancy Amy at 845-454-1700 ext. 1004 and let us know.

ost of us are not raw ‘foodists,’ meaning people that survive solely by eating raw food or food not cooked above 118 degrees. However we all eat some raw food, most commonly in salads, fresh fruits, cut-up vegetables with dip, etc. I would like to offer you a challenge this summer - try to incorporate more raw foods into your diet while we have the beautiful bounty of the summer fruits and vegetables at our disposal. Raw foods can supply us with more energy than cooked foods. A complete raw food meal leaves you feeling light and full of energy, and our bodies need energy to survive. There are so many of us that are always in need of a boost. Could it be from what we are eating? Cooked foods are often missing things like things like en-
zymes, oxygen, hormones, phytochemicals and life-force, elements needed by the body for its optimal functioning. When you eat cooked foods, you put a heavy burden on your body to produce the enzymes missing in the food, which is one of the reasons you often feel lethargic after a cooked meal. Raw foods however are full of oxygen, especially green leafy vegetables that contain an abundance of chlorophyll. The chemical structure of chlorophyll is almost identical to the hemoglobin in our red blood cells. When you eat raw green foods, you oxygenate the blood. Just think of all the spinach, kale, collard greens, broccoli, bok choy and other nutrient– dense greens waiting for us at the farmer’s market! Eating healthy means giving your body power foods it can easily assimilate and use for regeneration and rejuvenation. With the
