Balloon Festival is summer tradition

he Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Balloon Festival, an annual summer tradition in the Hudson Valley, will take place from July 4-6 at various sites around the area. In total, over 75 balloon take-offs are scheduled during the weekend. All launches are open to the public and complimentary to attend, and many feature community gatherings, food and drink and much more. The Festival begins with evening launches scattered throughout Dutchess County at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 4. At 6 a.m. on Saturday, July 5, all balloons in town will dot the sky over the Hudson

River, taking off from the docks of the Hudson River Rowing Association. This event provides tremendous photographic opportunities and the Walkway Over the Hudson will be open early for

guests seeking a unique, elevated vantage point.

After the morning launches Saturday, stick around for the firstever Dragon Boat Race and Festival on the Hudson River. The event offers a fun day of recreational racing, food and music. All proceeds after expenses benefit two local non-profits: Arts Mid-Hudson and Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation. ecently, the Chamber has joined Marc Molinaro, Central Hudson and many other local elected officials in opposition to the new Capacity Zone proposal. We have been lobbying the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to stop this plan – one which will increase energy costs in the Hudson Valley by over $200 million dollars and increase the average home’s bill by perhaps as much as 10 percent. While FERC has so far refused to budge, we’re continuing to fight to have this poorly thought out plan that can kill commerce and make it harder to heat and light

Acting as an advocate for businesses in the Hudson Valley is a primary function of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. However, our voice is only as strong as our membership. ’m sad to say that with my coming retirement at the end of the year, the 2014 Balloon Festival will be my last as President and CEO of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. Out of all the events that we host at the Chamber, none have been closer to my heart or perhaps had as profound an impact on the community as the Balloon Festival, and I will sincerely miss organizing it each July. When the Chamber took over running the Balloon Festival so many years ago, people thought I was crazy. They asked me “Why would a business organization want to run a hot air balloon festival?” The answer is simple – when people come to the area, they shop in our local shops, eat in our local restaurants and use our local services. Each weekend during the Balloon Festival, over 25,000 people are out and about in the Hudson Valley, and that leads to a lot of commerce! We’ve also been able to use the festival to drive people to specific busi-

nesses in the area. For the longest time, all the balloons took off en masse at some large open site. Now, while we still have a mass launch on the banks of the Hudson River on Saturday and Sunday mornings, balloons also take off from area businesses all around Dutchess County. This gets people out to meet owners and allows them to in turn directly generate good will. It’s a win-win for everyone and a large part of why the Balloon Festival has been so successful. Whether you circle your calendar every year or this will be your first time experiencing the Balloon Festival, I hope you’re able to make it out and enjoy one of the best events of the year. It has been my pleasure to help keep this event going strong, and I can’t wait to see what it becomes in the future.

Being healthy starts at the top

he remarkable three-pound universe known as the human brain requires continuous care in order to function properly. We can regard the brain in three ways: The structures, such as the right and left hemispheres; the neurochemicals, such as serotonin and dopamine; and the electrical energy generated by the firing of the cells of the brain, the neurons. Each aspect needs our attention. So, wear a helmet when skiing, riding a bike or motorcycle; avoid head injuries as damage to the brain structures can result in permanent damage. Our neurochemistry thrives on a healthy diet, sufficient rest, and regular

exercise. The patterns of electrical energy, detected by the electroencephalograph, can be modified through activities like mediation or yoga or deep breathing. At the Hudson Valley Center for Neurofeedback we assess the electrical activity of the brain and, when necessary, help the individual to regulate that electrical activity toward the norm. This procedure enables the inattentive person to become focused, the anxious person to be calm, and the depressed person to become more positive in his/her outlook. Treatment is non-

invasive and free of side effects. Neurofeedback is recognized as a Level 1 intervention for the treatment of ADHD by the American Academy of Pediatrics. It is a wonderful alternative to medication. Youth One Stop trips provide summer fun by louise Mcloughlin vice President, Workforce development Center

ummer is a busy time in the Workforce Development Center. The trips that we spent all year planning are upon us. Some are just plain fun like our daycations to Bowdoin Park and Lake Compounce! Others are educational jaunts disguised as recreation like our Sloop Clearwater adventure coming up in August. You may wonder what a trip to a fun park or an adventure on the Hudson River has to do with mentoring and case management. I did at first. Let’s flashback to last August when we started the Dutchess County Youth One Stop (and to 2005 when we started our Youth Employment Services program). Take a moment to experience our program through the eyes of a young person who was referred to the Chamber by the Department of and Community Family Services or perhaps their guidance counselor at school. The program are requirements explained by a case manager and sound something like this: “Our mission is to work with you to achieve your high school diploma or equivalency,

discover a career and find employment.” Sounds boring to me, and if you were a young person between the ages of 14-21 I am sure that you would agree! So how do we achieve our program goals? You have probably figured it out by now… incentives! And while it is nice to receive a gift card for reaching a personal milestone, we have discovered that our youth excel when we spend quality time with them doing something fun, and having an educational element makes the grownups feel good! youth Our have enjoyed a trip to the movies; have learned how to bowl or ice skate, and how to properly maintain a car. We saw a baseball game at Dutchess Stadium. We hopped around at Bounce! and took a stroll across the Walkway Over the Hudson. We went for a hike at Val-Kill and learned about Eleanor Roosevelt.
