A

s you know, The Chamber is dedicated to not only improving our local economy and business climate, but also the community as a whole. It accomplishes this largely through the programming and events put on by its nonprofit, fundraising arm, The Chamber Foundation, Inc. In May, The Chamber Foundation presented the inaugural Hudson Valley KidVenture. Thousands joined us on the streets of downtown Poughkeepsie for a weekend of discovery, adventure, and learning. I think it’s safe to say the event was a huge success! Other notable May events include more than 85 local high school students completing the Youth Leadership Program and more than a dozen pairs of adult professionals starting a year-long mentorship relationship through the Career Achievement Program. In June,

Message from the Chair:

Rita McPeck

the new Executive Leadership Program—a four-part, high-level, educational series for current and potential senior executives in the Hudson Valley—will hold its second session on strategic planning and implementation. June is also packed with other Foundation events. I hope you’ll join me at the June Contact Breakfast, where we will again give thousands of dollars to local students to further their education goals. See Page 1 for complete event information. Also this month, 30 adult professionals will graduate from

Leadership Dutchess, joining the ranks of more than 700 individuals who have benefitted from this signature leadership program since its inception in 1986. The Class of 2017’s recent Speakeasy fundraising event was a huge success and the final fundraising total will be revealed at their graduation this month. In short, The Chamber Foundation is deeply rooted in its mission to further enhance the future of our community through training, education, mentorship, and commitment to community service. I hope you’ll join me in acknowledging the hard work and dedication of The Chamber Foundation’s staff, but also in supporting these invaluable community resources—together we can make a difference in our community. For more information on The Chamber Foundation’s programming and to donate, visit chamberfdn.org. Rita McPeck is the SBA Business Sales Officer for KeyBank. Chamber President Frank Castella, Jr.

Balloon Festival returns in July to Barton Orchards

T

he Hudson Valley HotAir Balloon Festival will be back at Barton Orchards on July 7-9. We are very excited and are planning for the biggest and best event ever. In an effort to make this a true festival, our hosts at Barton Orchards have expanded activities to include one of the greatest displays of fireworks in the northeast and a Moon Glow on both Friday and Saturday evenings. In addition to hot-air balloon launches we invite you to take an extended balloon ride, tethered balloon ride, or helicopter ride. Thanks to the Barton family there will be a petting zoo, hayrides, a tap room, bakery and market, fire pits, games, and live music on two stages from great local bands! Parking, shuttle service, and morning launches will be free all weekend. Admission after 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday is $10 in advance, a limited number of tickets will be available at

the gates for $12, and $5 at the gate only on Sunday. Our Balloon Meisters, Michele and Roger Hooper, have signed on balloonists from all over the country and with five launch times there are over 80 flights scheduled to take place over the course of the weekend! Balloon flights are weather dependent of course, but if the balloons aren’t able to fly there are plenty of activities available to keep the entire family entertained. This event has grown exponentially the past years and I cannot wait to welcome visitors from all over the country to our beloved Dutchess County. Visit our Balloon Festival website at balloonfesthv.com for tickets, schedule of events, sponsors, FAQs, and more. I sincerely hope to see you there in July! Sincerely,

Frank M. Castella, Jr. President & CEO

The technology of a good night’s sleep By: Jaime M. Butler

D

o you ever feel like you just can’t seem to get a good night’s rest, no matter what you try? No matter if its playing music or silence, soft light or complete darkness, you still wake up feeling tired. Maybe it’s your pillow. Technology has recently become available in a smart pillow from Mode Modern, which boasts it will improve your night’s sleep. The memory foam pillow can track your movement while your sleep and color-changing LEDs will mimic a sunrise and help you wake-up in the morning. Speakers can play nature sounds or white

noise to help you fall asleep and then switch to music to start your day. Sync this pillow with Mode Modern’s smart alarm, which will wake you during your lightest sleep and has an app to review audio recordings taken during periods of restless sleep to help identify disturbances. If you still need something more, try the Sleep Number 360 mattress. This bed has built-in sensors to warm the foot of the bed to help you fall asleep and sleep more comfortably. It can read biometric cues to find out if you snore and can automatically raise head of the bed to alleviate it. This bed will even integrate with products from other

manufacturers and should be on the market this year. Jaime Butler, business development specialist at Integrated Enterprise Solutions, Inc., contributed this article. For more information about IES, visit ies-ny. com or call (845) 226-9983.

Hospital verified as level II trauma center

W

ith more than 20 years experience as a New York State designated Level II trauma center, MidHudson Regional Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, recently passed a rigorous peer review process to become the Hudson Valley’s first and only trauma care program verified “Level II” by the American College of Surgeons. “A trauma center receiving verification from the ACS is key, as New York State now only utilizes the ACS verification program as its standard to designate trauma centers,” said Rifat Latifi, MD, FACS, Director of the Department of Surgery at Westchester Medical

Center, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and MidHudson Regional Hospital. “This verification

program applies a comprehensive review process that all centers … must undergo for official status. No other trauma center in the Hudson Valley area has passed this strict scrutiny.” The Poughkeepsie-based hos-

pital joins Westchester Medical Center and Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital as ACS-verified trauma centers in the Hudson Valley with Level I designation for adult and pediatric trauma care, respectively. “We are strongly committed to providing our community with the finest trauma care available, and are gratified that the American College of Surgeon’s has conferred this designation,” said Paul Hochenberg, Executive Director of MidHudson Regional Hospital. For more information about the trauma care available at MidHudson Regional Hospital, visit MidHudsonRegional.org.

Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Frank Castella, Jr. opened the event with a rousing Ribbon Cutting with remarks from City of Poughkeepsie Mayor Rob Rolison and Poughkeepsie City School District Superintendent Dr. Nicolè Williams. “It is a testament to the commitment our businesses show our community and school district that this job fair has so many local businesses involved!!” Mayor Rolison said during his remarks. “The Buzz in Poughkeepsie is back because partnerships like this exist.” Understanding that careers

can take multiple paths, the fair was broken into a road map, of sorts. Students and faculty from the high school traveled down Finance Drive and spoke to local banking institutions. The Military District had recruiters from the

errance Clarke enrolled in the Youth One Stop program in August last year. Quiet and calm, the United States Army veteran said he was looking to gain more career skills. He already had a job as a desk clerk at the Best Western Inn, but wanted a career in the medical care field. The program’s case managers walked him through the process

of enrolling in the BOCES C.N.A. class, and a few months later, he attained his certificate on the first try. The next step was CLARKE a 40-hour paid internship with Wingate at Dutchess, a Fishkill-based short-term re-

Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy and other military branches. NonProfit Street featured local nonprofit organizations and Trades Highway had representatives from various trades such as HV/AC technicians and auto mechanics. Superintendent Dr. Williams said besides being the most vendors to date, there was also a record number of student scholars in attendance, a fact she says can be contributed to the rising number of students who have a dream for their future after high school. “We believe in partnerships and collaboration. The more students and our local businesses work together, the closer we are to achieving excellence. We believe ‘Excellence is Possible.’” There was a lot of excitement as youth explored career paths within each of the career clusters hab, long-term care, and respite care facility. After his internship, Clarke was offered a position as a full-time C.N.A. Today, Clarke works fulltime at Best Western and Wingate, while also attending classes at Dutchess Community College, working towards his Associate’s Degree in Nursing. He’s on track to receive his phlebotomy certificate this summer and is saving to treat himself to a birthday trip to Alaska. Clarke impressed the staff of Youth One Stop with his strong work ethic, calm demeanor, and humility. They can’t wait to receive a postcard from Alaska! Youth One Stop is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Cultivate better balance early to prevent falls By Dr. Lori Schneider Health & Wellness Club

D

id you know one in three seniors over the age of 65 experiences at least one fall each year? Many of these falls result in serious injuries including fractures, internal bleeding, organ damage, and head trauma; estimated to cost $54.9 billion by 2020 in the U.S. Balance difficulties exist due to joint stiffness, muscle weakness, advanced medical conditions, certain medications, pain, and/or a sedentary lifestyle. The good news is balance difficulties and falls can be prevented and the earlier prevention starts, the better.

Here are some tips to improve balance: • Have your primary care physician monitor your biometrics

(height, weight, blood pressure, lipid profile, body mass index, vision, etc.) at an annual physical • Have your physical therapist or a fitness professional assess problem areas related to loss of range of motion, strength, and function. • Drink plenty of water daily. • Stretch daily, focusing on the heel cords, hamstrings, buttocks, and spinal musculature. • Strengthening exercise 3-4 times per week. • Stand up straight with your

head over your spine to naturally engage your core muscules to maintain good posture. • 20-30 minutes of endurance activity daily. • Practice higher level balance tasks daily such as standing on one foot, walking heel-to-toe on a line, or try arm or leg exercises while standing still or moving. Human nature dictates if it’s

Health

not fun and doesn’t show immediate results, we rarely stick with it. However, there are many alternatives to choose from, including home gyms or health clubs; classes in Tai Chi, Pilates, Yoga or Dance; or even fitness apps on mobile devices or DVD recordings. Choose what works for you and don’t hesitate to change it up to get the results you seek. Retirement should be about enjoying your later years with family and friends. Don’t let the consequences of a potential fall stand in your way. Dr. Lori Schneider, PT, MS, DPT, is a Regional Director for Access Physical Therapy and Wellness, with over 25 locations in the Hudson Valley, including LaGrange, Hopewell Junction, and Rhinebeck.
