T
he approach of the Hudson Valley Hot-Air Balloon Festival this month is a reminder of one of the many advantages of Chamber membership. Chamber members have purchased vendor space at this premier event to showcase their wares to a crowd of thousands over the weekend of July 7-9 at Barton Orchards in Poughquag. This is a great way for local businesses to get extensive exposure at a low cost. This is just one of the many advantages to belonging to the Chamber. Members also have a variety of networking opportunities; including the monthly Business After Hours and Contact Breakfasts in addition to targeted referral generation and network-

ing at the new Chamber Network, Present & Refer. Membership also includes access to Business Education Seminars, which provide helpful insights on a variety of subjects. In May, the seminar took a look at the next level of social media including working efficiently through sites such as Hootsuite and how to use Facebook’s Business Manager to build social media ads. In June,
the focus was on how members can make most of their Chamber membership. The next will be in September and will cover content marketing, including blogging and submitting content to other businesses’ websites. Members can also look to the Chamber to be their advocate in the community by hosting events that spur economic activity, such as this month’s balloon festival and the Think Local First Business Expo returning in October. All in all, summer is a great time to take advantage of what the Chamber has to offer. I encourage you to join if you aren’t already a member, and if you are a member, I look forward to seeing you out at the many great events coming up.

ecoming a member of the Chamber is just the beginning. Once you’re a part of the organization, a whole world of business education, political advocacy opportunities, networking and marketing services are at your fingertips. Whether a brand new member or just getting back into the swing of things, the best place to start is by attending the next Master Your Membership event on Tuesday, July 11 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Chamber’s boardroom in Poughkeepsie. Sugar & Spice Café will provide lunch at this complimentary event thanks to our generous sponsor Ulster Savings Bank.
Attendees will meet the Chamber staff and learn how the departments of membership, events, communications, The Chamber Foundation, and Workforce Development Center operate for the benefit of members. Information about all the services included with your membership dues will be provided and this is a great opportunity to ask questions. Since 1851, Ulster Savings Bank has been a locally focused and operated bank, with locations throughout the Hudson Valley. HVYPs to network in Wappingers
Message from the
Chamber President Frank Castella, Jr.
Expos, forums keep us educated and informed
A
dvocacy is just one of the many benefits of Chamber membership. And that’s advocacy on every level – whether it’s spreading the word to the greater community about all the phenomenal products being produced right here in the Hudson Valley, hosting candidate forums to keep our community informed come election season, or working with local government officials on policies to help businesses grow. The Chamber’s Expo season—including the Work Local First Job Fair in September at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel, and the Business Expo coming up in October—is a prime example of how the Chamber staff works hard on behalf of our members by helping to promote their products and services. Expos offer venues for potential customers and business contacts to learn what you have to offer, creating a strong foundation of support for regional businesses. Our Legislative Action Committee is also working to bring individuals running for elected office in front of our membership to discuss issues
important to the business community. This advocacy effort takes the form of both exclusive events such as our recent Legislative Action Breakfast (see Page 13) and more public events, such as candidate forums. These forums are another important benefit of Chamber membership, and one the Chamber takes very seriously. The Chamber is a union for the business community. We work hard to help promote businesses of all sizes and the products and services they offer, as well as supporting probusiness government. I hope you will visit us at the Expos this season to support your fellow members and participate in our candidate forums by attending or submitting questions. Remember, many voices are stronger than one. We can achieve much with the strength of our members behind us.
Sincerely,
T

Subtitles could spell disaster By Jaime M. Butler
I
f you download movies from sites such as Popcorn Time or others available, you may want to think twice. According to researchers at Check Point Software Technologies, vulnerability was discovered in several streaming platforms. This means more than 200 million video players and streaming service providers were at risk of downloading malware to their devices. Because users and devices alike consider many of these online film repositories to be trusted sites, they create an easy, and much overlooked, path for hacking. Security professionals view the subtitles for movies as harmless text files, so a user’s anti-virus or other security measures won’t assess the real nature of the files, which results in serious risk for exposure.
Services that have read or were alerted to Check Point’s research, such as VLC, Kodi, and Stremio, have all worked to fix the issue and have provided updates to their apps. However, leadership at these companies is still skeptical of the problem. The maker of Kodi said it is extremely rare for a user to download a subtitle in a .zip file format and even if it were downloaded, there is no way to execute the code, so the malware wouldn’t work and, they feel, it would be almost impossible for it to do any real harm. Regardless, whatever service you use, be aware of the risk and the consequences it might have for your device and any files you may want to protect. Jaime Butler, business development specialist at Integrated Enterprise Solutions, Inc., contributed this article. For more information about IES, visit ies-ny. com or call (845) 226-9983.

JULY 2017
By Rosie Grabowska Youth One Stop Assistant Coordinator
A
bright, sunny, and warm day in June—a welcome break from nearly two weeks of rain—was a perfect day for a barbecue at Waryas Park in the City of Poughkeepsie. That afternoon, a small army of staff and participants from Youth One Stop and the Workforce Development Center arrived, armed with tablecloths, charcoal, hot dogs, hamburgers, and all the fixings. Tucked under the arm of the Youth One Stop coordinator was a folder thick with certificates signed by Workforce Program Manager Anne DeMuro and President and CEO Frank Castella, Jr. They said things like, “this certificate is awarded ‌ for attaining a Certified Nursing Certificate.â€? After a few attempts, the
charcoals were lit and soon the merry sizzle of burgers and hot dogs filled the air along with the appetizing smell of homemade salads. Participants and staff piled their plates high, sharing in the delicious fare and wellearned break in routine. After a well-fed silence settled on the group, Mr. Castella spoke to the participants. “We really appreciate how hard you’ve worked on improving your lives, he began. “These are some major accomplishments you’ve achieved and we’re very proud. Please know our door is always open to you whenever you need help. Many individuals in attendance received a certificate, some for achieving his or her High School Equivalency Diploma, others for completing an occupational skills class. Regardless, each stood for a photo next to Mr. Castella with a proud smile, soaking in the recognition of their accomplishments. Following the official business, the atmosphere relaxed again as another round of hamburgers and hot dogs were cooked, conversations turned to stories and laughter, and a feeling of pride crept over the whole affair. Later, each picked up his or her certificate with care, determined not to get them creased or wrinkled—some even thinking of framing it. Youth One Stop is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. rector of Education, said Isaacs was a great “brainstormer, a hard-working team member, and a “brilliant performer, while Sharrock “went from zero camera experience to being a very talented cinematographer! The ladies worked together on a film, Santa Woman, which was selected as a top five finalist in The America I Am Youth Film Competition, a division of the Tribeca Film Festival. The film won the festival’s Best Collaborative Vision Award.
