A
s you are reading this, the Chamber is just days away from the 27th Annual Hudson Valley Hot-Air Balloon Festival at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck. Balloon Festival time signifies to us that more than half the year has passed. The Chamber as an organization is working to bolster our local and regional economy through events like the festival, and there is nothing better for our members than having thousands of people come from outside the area to one of our events in Dutchess County. This is a perfect time of year to pause and reflect on what the Chamber does for the business community, what it is to be a member, and how the organization can be the best advocate
Message from the Chair:

for your business. It is advantageous for a local business to be engaged in the programming and events that the Chamber creates expressly for its members. Being an active member is the only way to reap the full benefits of membership. Ongoing active participation helps us best represent the entire business community. A great example of what the Chamber does is a ribbon cutting. These events highlight everything from a grand opening
to a well-deserved milestone anniversary. Neighboring members are invited to support and celebrate these accomplishments, and witness economic growth in-action for our region. So, before next year’s Balloon Festival, as you hopefully attend our breakfasts, networking events, educational seminars, ribbon cuttings, and more, please recognize and support the Chamber’s mission. We appreciate being the advocate for the business community and the unwavering champion for the Hudson Valley’s economic health. Jeffrey B. Looking to buy an iPad - how do you choose?
If you’re looking for just a simple tablet, then you can use the 2018 version. However, if you’re looking for something
more, you may want to wait because there will be a 9.7 inch iPad coming out as well as upgraded iPad Pros. It’s expected that for the 2018 iPad Pro models, there will be details like face ID instead of touch ID added, along with more screen face and an overall smaller body with faster CPUs. If you’re looking for a great value, you can’t go wrong with the 10.5 iPad Pro; it’s the best quality iPad if money is not an object. This iPad has some nicer features like better quad speakers and stereo sound. It includes the A10X processor for better performance, the camera is improved and the side smart connector allows things like Apple’s smart keyboard cover to attach

without needing Bluetooth or separate charging. If you’re looking for something for your kids, you may just want to look beyond Apple altogether and consider a Fire table or Chromebook. These devices are more affordable and are perfectly good for reading, watching movies, playing games and doing plenty of things – specifically the FireHD 8. Chromebooks end up being a great choice for kids looking to use a laptop at home and some versions like Asus Chromebook Flip can transform into tablet-like devices pretty easily.

Message from the
Chamber President Frank Castella, Jr.
The Balloon Festival brings together our communities As many of you know, in just a few days, on July 6th, 7th and 8th, The Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce will once again host its signature summer event, the 27th Annual Hudson Valley Hot-Air Balloon Festival. At the forefront of the festivals’ growth is the support we have received from our sponsors. Our sponsors represent the business community, and our Chamber Members. They have generously backed our organization time-and-time again with the belief in, and understanding, that we are reaching an audience their organizations want to be in front of, at an event they want to be a part of, to support the mission of our Chamber and our community. A full listing of sponsors who’ve made this year’s festival possible are listed inside our Event Guide, the Hudson Valley Hot-Air Balloon Tribune. The Hot-Air Balloon Tribune is the source for all your festival needs. Some of the highlights of this year’s festival include: free morning launches, a community breakfast, a craft beverage tasting tent, a tap tent, and over 100 scheduled hot-air balloon launches by our 27 experienced balloonists. We’ve added a Warrior Wagon Tribute Ceremony, and brought back the popular illumination moon
glows. New balloons include the World’s Largest American Flag, AMERICA ONE, and PEA-NUT, the world’s largest elephant shaped balloon. We’re going to have dozens of activities, like the Two-By-Two Zoo, hayrides, live bands and over 90 food trucks and vendors. There will also be flyovers all weekend long from the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, and an airplane and car exhibit. We’ve added a dedicated performance tent to include Illusionist Ryan Dutcher, Bee Bee the Clown, and a birds of prey and reptile exhibition. All of our activities and a full schedule can also be found on our website at BalloonFestHV.com. Tickets for admission, hot-air balloon and helicopter rides are available in advance and are selling out fast. We also need volunteers to help with games, the information booth, setup/breakdown, prizes, balloon crew and more. To sign up go to balloonfesthv. com. With that I leave you to enjoy the rest of the month and I hope to see you at the 27th Annual Hudson Valley Hot-Air Balloon Festival! Sincerely,
Frank M. Castella, Jr., President & CEO

Hot-Air Balloon Tribune HUDSON VALLEY HOT-AIR BALLOON FESTIVAL EVENT GUIDE
27th Annual Event will be BIGGER, better than ever T
JULY & 6 ,7 8
he Hudson Valley Hot-Air Balloon Festival is in its 27th year of hosting balloonists from all over the country. This year due to growth and need for expansion, the balloon festival will be at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck, New York. This move will enable the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce to offer new expanded activities for ALL AGES! The Fairgrounds for the first time will enable the hot air balloons to fly in all directions. Balloonists will have additional room to launch many more balloons this year as well as have tethered balloon rides. The abundant room that the Fairgrounds allows will result in FREE and easy parking and intimate interaction with the balloons as well as their pilots. The 27th Annual Hudson Valley Hot-Air Balloon Festival has expanded significantly over the years, with more than 25,000 people attending in 2017. By moving to the iconic Fairgrounds, the event will be able to continue to grow, as well as offer a stable and proven infrastructure that hosts hundreds of thousands of people each year. A total of more than 100 balloon launches are planned during the weekend, with mass launches scheduled in the evenings Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and the popular sunrise launches on Saturday and Sunday. This year hot-air balloon illumination moon glow will be set to patriotic music, preceded by the Warrior Wagon Ceremony with a tribute to the Year of the Veteran. In addition, there will be tethered balloon rides available throughout the festival. Students recognized for completing H.S. career mentoring program By Nancy Herrera Career Action Center Mentor
A
s the school year comes to an end, the Career Action Center is proud to congratulate the class of 20172018 for successfully completing the Career Exploration Intensive Mentoring program. The Career Action Center is a collaborative initiative between the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Poughkeepsie City School District. Since it’s inception in 2014, the intensive mentoring program has worked with select juniors and seniors. Through internships, college exploration, job searches, interview preparation, students worked with mentors to gain career and job readiness skills. Recently, students partici-
pated in the Career Exploration Mock Interview Day. For weeks, students practiced behavioral interview questions, created resumes, cover letters and reference pages. The Career Action Center was very lucky to have businesses like Hudson River Housing, Office for the Aging, Planned Parenthood, The Art Effect, and The Chamber volunteer their time to interview and critique students. The purpose of the mock interviews is to provide a safe and educational environment where stu-
dents can develop and strengthen their interviewing skills and make them stronger candidates in a tough job market. It provides the opportunity to work through the interview jitters and become more confident. After the successful completion of the mock interviews, students were rewarded with a breakfast ceremony where friends and family celebrated their achievements in the program. Also in attendance was Superintendent of Poughkeepsie City School District, Dr. Nicole Williams, as well as Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer Audra B. Gerty, and President & CEO of the Chamber, Frank M. Castella Jr. The Career Action Center would like to give all our intern-
ship sites a big thank you for opening their doors to our students. It’s because of their time and generosity that our students had the time to truly explore their career interests, an opportunity that not many high school students receive. As Jose Martinez, graduating PHS student, describes, “Opportunities like these changed my life. It helped me figure out what I really wanted to do.”
Career Action Center mentors are stationed in Poughkeepsie High School to provide students with the necessary skills to identify and pursue their career interests and/or obtain employment. Mentors also facilitate an intensive job and career readiness mentoring program to 50 juniors and seniors at Poughkeepsie High School. The Career Action Center is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Poughkeepsie City School District and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

he Youth One Stop (YOS) Program partners with many community organizations in Dutchess County to enhance our program offerings. One of these partnerships is with the Nubian Directions II Program (NDI). Over the last few years YOS and NDI have come together to provide better services for the youth in Dutchess. This complimentary relationship between both programs helps ensure we all meet our benchmarks, which in turn provides the youth we serve with a better chance of success. NDI and YOS work together for higher enrollment to both programs in order to safeguard these goals. NDI does this by working with individuals on getting their High School Equivalency as well as providing them with Ameri-
Corps hours. Part of the program allows them working hours on residential property projects in the area to help rebuild houses that need to be remodeled allowing hands on construction experience. NDI offers individuals the opportunity to receive training and certifications in fields such as OSHA 10, NARCAN, and EPA. Alternatively, Youth One Stop offers soft skill workshops cov-
ering topics like resume writing, plicants. Together YOS and NDI will interviewing skills, budgeting and effective communication. We pro- continue to grow and empower vide paid internships to continue Dutchess County youth with the real-work experience. We also offer formal training like HVAC and C.N.A through BOCES, along with other training. When individuals come to the Youth One Stop from NDI, our concurrent mission is that both programs be on the same path to benefit the students. Students take an active role and get to set goals in each program. YOS and NDI meet monthly to discuss barriers or successes for each individual. The partnership continuously works to enroll ap-
