Get ready for a cuisine supreme

F

or nearly two decades, the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the best restaurants, cafes, bakeries, farms and food providers for the culinary extravaganza known as Breakfast of Champions. This annual festival of the gastronomic arts returns on Wednesday, June 20 from 7:30-9:30 a.m. at the MidHudson Civic Center. As always, admission is free and the event is open to the public.

Breakfast of Champions does not feature merely breakfast foods, but rather everything under the culinary sun from cupcakes to the duck confit. And in a region that has recently been called the Napa Valley of food, Breakfast of Champions is your best and only chance to get to sample so many wonderful local products at one time for no cost.

Vendors continue to sign up every day, and the complete list of exhibitors can be found at dcrcoc.org.

While booths are going fast, there’s still space for more at the Breakfast of Champions. If you think your business could benefit from exposure to thousands of potential customers in a two-hour span, visit dcrcoc. org and download a registration form. There is no cost to be an exhibitor; the only expense is time and talent. And exhibitors aren’t feeding full meals to the public, but rather just providing a sample-sized tasting of their best work.

ow often do you “Think Local First?” The Chamber has certainly made a concerted effort to promote local products and services and have found great success, but now it’s time to kick it up a notch. All of us at the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce and in the Hudson Valley community need your help to make the impact even greater.

I regularly receive comments from naysayers saying, “It is impossible to always Think Local First.”

While this may be true to some extent, I would be willing to bet your business and family can do more to have a larger influence on our local economy by simply trying a little harder to “TLF.” I know at the onset it may take a little more effort to break old habits, but you will be pleasantly surprised to find a local provider for cardboard box packing tape and a vendor for personalized business checks. If we all focus a little more on supporting neighboring businesses, even for small things, we can make a

The Prescription Discount Program aims to do its part in helping to reduce those affected by escalating medical costs. Savings through the network can range up to 75% on generic drugs and up to 20% on brand names.

It isn’t a secret that the internet has hurt many industries and caused a great deal of small businesses to rethink strategies or even close their doors for good. As a printer, I can personally relate to the effects of the internet on my industry. The changes we have seen in the last several years, where technology is headed and the cost associated with competing on a global scale, is seemingly unsustainable. As a business person, we now have to think smarter, streamline, be more efficient than we thought we could ever be and lower our prices be-

yond points we thought we would ever see. Yes, in some industries the internet has helped boost business, and in others it has destroyed sales and margins, but I do know - you can almost always find someone to give you a higher level of service, at a competitive price, right here in the Hudson Valley. Do you want your blinds to come from another country with confusing do-it-yourself instructions when you can have then installed by a local professional for the same price?

So next time you consider a purchase --a new laptop computer, office supplies, car part, or a tool -- I urge you to reconsider some of your habit purchases from out-of-the-area vendors, even if it is for something as simple as printer ink, and place your order locally. You will find someone to do it for the same or less cost, give you better service and you will feel great for doing so! Don’t do this for yourself, do it for those relying on you to stay in business.

he Chamber is going the extra mile to help the Hudson Valley community Think Local First this summer by presenting the best local products and services to the public during the one-day-only Think Local First Consumer Expo on Saturday, July 7 from noon until 5 p.m. at the Poughkeepsie Galleria.

Spread throughout the Galleria’s lower level, vendors who exemplify the values of Think Local First, meaning those that commit to using local vendors, hiring local people, and giving back to the local community, will display their top consumer offerings and speak face-to-face with shoppers.

Plenty of one-of-a-kind items will be presented.

There is no admission fee or cost of any kind to browse the ta-

bles at the Think Local First Consumer Expo.

Hechler has been mentoring small business owners and entrepreneurs and developing small business seminars as a SCORE volunteer since 2005.

Arnoff Moving and Storage, one of the Northeast’s largest and most successful moving & storage businesses, recently celebrated its company’s biggest initiative to “go green” by creating one of the largest solar farms in the Hudson Valley at its Millerton warehouse.

Joined by U.S. Congressman Chris Gibson, Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro and elected officials and business representatives from around the region, Arnoff Moving & Storage President, Michael Arnoff “flipped the switch” on their new 96 kw solar farm.

“We’re very excited to have worked locally with Hudson Solar to make our Millerton building more energy efficient,” said Arnoff. “It’s been a goal of ours for many years to change Arnoff ’s carbon footprint and to take our business green. Arnoff is a forward-thinking, environmentally-aware business that takes going solar seriously, and so we plan to lead by example!”

The company employs 250 plus staff, has six U.S. locations for shipping throughout the U.S., Canada and internationally, and is dedicated to “green” initiatives. The Arnoff solar project is the largest of its kind in the region.

The third Cancer Prevention Study of the American Cancer Society will be enrolling participants at Vassar Brothers Medical Center on June 22 and 23. As part of enrollment, individuals who choose to participate will simply fill out a comprehensive survey packet about health history, provide a small blood sample (to be collected by trained phlebotomists) and provide a waist measure. Enrollment will take approximately 20-30 minutes. From that point forward, study participants will be

followed over time to update information via periodic, mailed surveys. Your involvement in CPS-3 will help American Cancer Society researchers understand the causes of, and ultimately determine ways to prevent cancer.

If you are willing to make a long-term commitment to the study (which involves completing follow-up surveys periodically over the next 20-30 years), are between the ages of 30 and 65 years old and have never been diagnosed with cancer, then you will want to participate in this study.

Nonprofit organizations discuss community issues The Chamber’s Women’s Leadership Alliance Committee presented the Wares and Wisdom Tabletop Expo, which included a panel discussion as business leaders describe the ongoing challenges of starting and running a business, and how today’s economic climate challenges them to be creative in order to grow.

The Chamber was proud to help welcome adventurers Richard Harpham and Glenn Charles to Poughkeepsie, along with Mary Kay Vrba, Dutchess County Tourism; Marcus Molinaro, Dutchess County Executive; Catherine Maloney, Dutchess County Economic Development; and Chamber members Tarryl Gabel and Joseph Bertolozzi.

More than 30 Mid-Hudson nonprofit representatives had the opportunity on April 24 to take part in a community forum on the impact of the 2012 New York State Budget on nonprofit organizations led by United Way of New York State President & Chief Professional Officer Susan Hager.

The forum, held at Mount Saint Mary College, was hosted by United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region in partnership with the Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley, Community Foundations of Orange & Sullivan, Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, Orange County Chamber of Commerce and the New York Council of

Nonprofits (NYCON).

Attendees included nonprofit leaders from Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan, Putnam and Ulster counties.

Hager addressed topical issues related to the 2012 Budget identified through a recent survey conducted by United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region. Topics included: the state’s executive budget and legislative processes, local nonprofits’ basic needs and their prompt contracting concerns as well as questions from nonprofit representatives in the audience.

This community forum was one of an ongoing series of periodic conversations related to key community issues. Working with partner organizations, United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region brings together nonprofits and community leaders that share the task of building a stronger, healthier place to live.

On Saturday, June 9, the entire Hudson Valley community is invited to do the Hokey Pokey on the Walkway.

Register now for this oncein-a-lifetime opportunity, as there are only 3,000 spots available.

Upon receipt of your $15 per person registration fee, you will be sent an email confirmation notice that will serve as your ticket to the event, and confirm your place on the Walkway and in history. Participants can choose to come to either the East or West entrance of the Walkway (you must check-in on event day at the side you check when you register!). Check-in is from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 9. All participants are encouraged to wear comfortable, weather appropriate clothing and footwear. Please do not bring pets to this event.

Once you’ve entered the Park, Walkway’s Volunteer Ambassadors will direct you to your place in line. It is important that everyone stay in line until they receive the signal to start dancing. (It is strongly suggested that you eat and using the restroom prior to venturing on the bridge.) Guinness World Records will send a judge to the event to confirm that there are enough people doing the Hokey Pokey for five full minutes to set a new world record.
