I

’m happy to report that in just over nine short months, the Youth One Stop program run through the Chamber’s Workforce Development Center has met, engaged and enrolled 100 area youth. That means that 100 members of our community between the ages of 14 and 21 who are facing obstacles inhibiting them from completing school, finishing their GED or gaining employment are getting help from professional mentors in achieving their goals. They’re finishing degrees, getting jobs and helping to build a better Hudson River Valley.

I’d like to thank the hard work of the Workforce Development Center and Youth One Stop for exceeding expectations and doing so much good for so many.

I’d also like to acknowledge our partners at the Workforce Investment Board and Dutchess County Department of Community and Family Services for their support. Lastly, kudos to the many community service organizations and local school districts that have embraced this program

as a positive one for their students. With everyone working together toward a common goal, we’ve been able to make a positive impact on many lives.

Of course, we’re not stopping now. There’s no limit to the amount of good that the Youth One Stop can do in this community, and I look forward to watching it continue to grow. world environment where young people can learn how to manage all of their expenses within their monthly income. This program teaches how to save, prioritize needs and wants, and how to handle unexpected expenses.�

The local business community supports this learning activity and provides volunteers. The job of the volunteers is to upsell the youth, saying “you deserve a sports car� or “why cook every night when you go out and have a delicious steak dinner served to you?� The youth quickly succumb and before they know it they are out of money.

Now it is decision time. The youth ponders, “What can I change in order to make my paycheck stretch through the month?�

MEMBER NEWSLINE Carter Bernhard, a Hyde Park native that was diagnosed with spina bifida 20 weeks into his mothers’ pregnancy, is a little boy with huge spirit. When DBS Remodel saw the opportunity to help him out, they of course jumped at it.

They learned of his need for a ramp at his home to increase him and his family’s independence just a few months back through one of their lead project managers, Michael Whalen. When DBS contacted the family, they were more than glad to have DBS be a guest at their home, and welcomed the idea of a ramp for Carter.

DBS began preliminary construction on April 26 by digging footings and cutting back the blacktop driveway to make room for end the ramp. Employees are donating their time until the project is finished, as all participants are excited and eager to get this ramp up for Carter! The ramp will help the family tremendously, as every day Scott carries Carter (and his chair) up and down four stairs to get him in and out of the family’s home.

Health Quest and Walkway Over the Hudson are in the middle of a six-week program designed to promote health and wellness for the entire community. Open to the public, the Walkway Fitness Challenge calls for enrollees to walk, bike, or run on the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park for 30 minutes on 12 different occasions from up until June 14.

Health Quest and Walkway Over the Hudson also collaborated to build an activity log component into Health Quest’s free smartphone app, “Health Quest U.” The activity log button allows participants to enter the contest with their log details and activity, making them eligible for prizes such as a one-year membership to Walkway Over the Hudson, a massage from Women’s View at Northern Dutchess Hospital, clothing gear, and gift certificates to Mike Arteaga’s Health and Fitness Center.

In addition to the use of the Health Quest U activity log, participants will also be eligible to win prizes when “selfies” are posted from the midway point of the Walkway on Instagram or Twitter to @My_HealthQuest with hashtag #HQHealthySelfie, or by printing the registration form from healthquest.org/walkway. ntrepreneurs and anyone thinking of owning a franchise will want to attend the next SBA Days event scheduled for Thursday, June 12 from 7:30-9 a.m., at the Chamber’s Beacon office at 33 Henry Street.

The featured speaker will be Tom McQuade of McQuade Development/The Entrepreneur’s Source. He will be discussing the facts about regulation and the advantages and disadvantages of starting a business with a franchise. A discussion of the popular myths and the latest “hot” franchises will be included, as well as reviewing with attendees some financing options, including the

I am excited to see a great group of graduating students from both Leadership Dutchess and Youth Leadership, however, I am sad to see them move on. For nine months both programs meet monthly, but also put in many hours outside of “class time” coordinating events, selling products, and working on their various activities and projects. On May 17th, The Leadership Dutchess Class of 2014 divided and conquered, taking on two Day of Service Projects painting, cleaning and renovating. Benefiting from the class’efforts were Grace Smith House in Poughkeepsie and Mid-Hudson Animal Aid in Beacon. At Grace Smith House, the team repainted, redesigned and brought new life to the children’s multi-purpose room and outside play area. At Mid-Hudson Animal Aid, the team painted, renovated exterior conditions and cleaned up the property. Special thanks to Williams Lumber and Home Center for the donation of supplies for both projects.

Career Night for students At the final Youth Leadership session for the program year, The Chamber Foundation hosted its annual Career Night. With over 25 participating companies and services, the students were able to learn about a variety of careers and professions.

Rhett Myers from Vassar Golf Course offered a golf lesson and Dan Pizzarelli from DC Indoor Golf hosted the day for more than 20 students from Poughkeepsie High School and the Chamberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Workforce Development programs. Students enjoyed lunch at Billy Bobâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s BBQ and continued to meet with their mentors on their own at both Vassar Golf Course and DC Indoor Golf throughout the rest of May.
