JUNE 2014
Message from the
Chamber President Charles S. North
I
’m happy to report that in just over nine short months, the Youth One Stop program run through the Chamber’s Workforce Development Center has met, engaged and enrolled 100 area youth. That means that 100 members of our community between the ages of 14 and 21 who are facing obstacles inhibiting them from completing school, finishing their GED or gaining employment are getting help from professional mentors in achieving their goals. They’re finishing degrees, getting jobs and helping to build a better Hudson River Valley. I’d like to thank the hard work of the Workforce Development Center and Youth One Stop for exceeding expectations and doing so much good for so many. I’d also like to acknowledge our partners at the Workforce Investment Board and Dutchess County Department of Community and Family Services for their support. Lastly, kudos to the many community service organizations and local school districts that have embraced this program
as a positive one for their students. With everyone working together toward a common goal, we’ve been able to make a positive impact on many lives. Of course, we’re not stopping now. There’s no limit to the amount of good that the Youth One Stop can do in this community, and I look forward to watching it continue to grow. If you’re an employer who might be able to provide an opportunity for a Youth One Stop participant, check in with us at dcrcoc.org/youthonestop. And as you’re driving around the area this summer, keep an eye out for our special Youth One Stop billboards letting you know how your membership and support of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is helping touch lives and develop youth all across the region.
Sincerely,
Charles S. North President & CEO

Secrets of selling – eCommerce tips that you need to know
I
f you’ve always dreamed of opening an online store, or believe that your business could be taken to new heights of success by opening it up to e-commerce, there are some things you may want to know to make sure you are successful and can handle your competition. 1. Make sure you register a business name that accurately reflects your product niche. Advertising your business both on- and off-line to drive traffic to your site is essential. 2. Choose a good niche. Your niche will succeed if it pertains to your geographic area of residence. 3. Quality design and functionality of your website will encourage traffic. Your site needs quality graphics, data encryption to ensure the safety of customers’ data, and payment processing.
4. Easy to shop = better sales. If it’s hard to navigate or find the products and get checked out, you’ll end up driving your potential customers to your competition. 5. Comparison shop. If you shop online, make sure you make note of things you love, like and don’t like about the sites you frequent so you’ll know how to tailor your site to your potential customers. 6. Keep your site updated. Keeping your product list up to date, having sales or specials will get you more attention from search
engines and potential customers. Patience is a 7. virtue. It’s going to take time and hard work to get you a steady stream of customers, so don’t give up too quickly. You also have the option to work with a web designer/ developer that has experience producing successful e-commerce sites for other local businesses in your area for additional assistance to get the site you need and want. The more prepared and knowledgeable you are about your needs and how you want the site to look, feel and function the better the chances that your site will beat out the e-commerce competition. Teens given real world experience with Mad City Money By Louise McLoughlin Vice President of Workforce Development

of nights of week. It doesn’t seem that hard, so you start to relax and think “this is easy, but then the volunteers throw in the curves. As you walk around you are handed bills. “Your car broke down and you have to pay this bill this month, says Nancy DeWitt from Bridgeway Federal Credit and, “Oh don’t forget to stop at the daycare to find out how much you are paying for child care each month! What?! Reality has firmly set in. Melissa Walsh, Vice President of Marketing & Branch Administration said, “Our Mad City Money Workshop provides a real
DCRCOC
world environment where young people can learn how to manage all of their expenses within their monthly income. This program teaches how to save, prioritize needs and wants, and how to handle unexpected expenses. The local business community supports this learning activity and provides volunteers. The job of the volunteers is to upsell the youth, saying “you deserve a sports car or “why cook every night when you go out and have a delicious steak dinner served to you? The youth quickly succumb and before they know it they are out of money. Now it is decision time. The youth ponders, “What can I change in order to make my paycheck stretch through the month?

ou’re a teen in our Youth One Stop program. You have arrived at the Chamber to attend a financial literacy workshop but have found that you have taken on the role of an adult in a futuristic Mad City. Bad dream? No, you are participating in Bridgeway Federal Credit Union’s Mad City Money Financial Education Program! As you enter Mad City, you find that you are in a shopping mall and are told that you will be able to buy things in these stores. Cool! There are many stores including a clothing store, grocery store and a real estate agency. In the first five minutes you learn you have a spouse, occupation, student loan and credit card debt, medical insurance payments and (gulp!) a child! As you move through the mall, you decide whether you live in a house or an apartment, take the bus or drive a sports car and cook at home or eat out a couple
The Mad City Money program allows the youth to make mistakes and suffer the consequences of their decisions in a realistic and safe environment. Laraine Kautz, Executive Director of the Workforce Investment Board, participated in Mad City Money at the Chamber in April. She said, “I had so much fun participating in the Mad City Money program. It’s an exciting program that introduced the youth to budgeting in a realistic fashion. I think it was eye-opening for everyone to contemplate cost of living expenses.

MEMBER NEWSLINE Carter Bernhard, a Hyde Park native that was diagnosed with spina bifida 20 weeks into his mothers’ pregnancy, is a little boy with huge spirit. When DBS Remodel saw the opportunity to help him out, they of course jumped at it. They learned of his need for a ramp at his home to increase him and his family’s independence just a few months back through one of their lead project managers, Michael Whalen. When DBS contacted the family, they were more than glad to have DBS be a guest at their home, and welcomed the idea of a ramp for Carter. DBS began preliminary construction on April 26 by digging footings and cutting back the blacktop driveway to make room for end the ramp. Employees are donating their time until the project is finished, as all participants are excited and eager to get this ramp up for Carter! The ramp will help the family tremendously, as every day Scott carries Carter (and his chair) up and down four stairs to get him in and out of the family’s home.

Health Quest and Walkway Over the Hudson are in the middle of a six-week program designed to promote health and wellness for the entire community. Open to the public, the Walkway Fitness Challenge calls for enrollees to walk, bike, or run on the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park for 30 minutes on 12 different occasions from up until June 14. Health Quest and Walkway Over the Hudson also collaborated to build an activity log component into Health Quest’s free smartphone app, “Health Quest U.” The activity log button allows participants to enter the contest with their log details and activity, making them eligible for prizes such as a one-year membership to Walkway Over the Hudson, a massage from Women’s View at Northern Dutchess Hospital, clothing gear, and gift certificates to Mike Arteaga’s Health and Fitness Center. In addition to the use of the Health Quest U activity log, participants will also be eligible to win prizes when “selfies” are posted from the midway point of the Walkway on Instagram or Twitter to @My_HealthQuest with hashtag #HQHealthySelfie, or by printing the registration form from healthquest.org/walkway. The winners will be announced at the Treetops to Rooftops 5K Race awards ceremony on June 14.

These Are The Facts: mental illness does not discriminate. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anyplace. Mental illness is not a character flaw. It is a brain disorder that is treatable but not curable. 1 in 4 Americans and 1 and 5 Children struggle with mental illness every day. Chances are somebody in your social network is also affected by mental illness. Unfortunately, because of the stigma associated with mental illness, many people are too ashamed or embarrassed to seek the help they need for themselves or their loved ones. Serious mental illness costs America $193.2 billion in lost earnings. About 9.2 million adults have co-occurring mental health and addiction disorders. 90% of persons who commit suicide had a diagnosable mental illness, and an estimated 22 veterans die from suicide each day. May is Mental
Health Awareness Month. NAMI-MH works with the community, schools, other mental health agencies, and local businesses to raise awareness and reduce the stigma that surrounds mental illness. It is a time to express compassion for those who struggle with mental health issues and to draw attention to the proven methods that can help, change, and improve the lives of the 13.6 million people that suffer from some form of mental illness.

Leadership classes set to graduate
T
his is always a bittersweet time of the year for me. I am excited to see a great group of graduating students from both Leadership Dutchess and Youth Leadership, however, I am sad to see them move on. For nine months both programs meet monthly, but also put in many hours outside of “class time” coordinating events, selling products, and working on their various activities and projects. I am with them every step of the way

supporting, encouraging and even getting fully immersed in the tasks at hand. Yes, the programming that
The Chamber Foundation puts forward benefits each participant involved – but I too get something in return, growing and learning from each involved. I commend all of our graduates on a job well done. Each program has made remarkable strides and accomplished great successes – but most of all, made me proud. Thank you to each participant and best of luck. I look forward to watching you take on the world!
