hamber membership certainly comes with its benefits, and one of them is the opportunity to attend a variety of special events during the course of the year. Summer is a particularly exciting season for Chamber events, and there are a few specific ones that can get you out of the office and around the great Hudson Valley to meet fellow members and enjoy some great times. If you’re looking for a relaxing way to network with other professionals, this month’s Business After Hours on June 24 will be a Floating Business Break held aboard the Marika cruise ship. You can enjoy dinner and drinks on the Hudson, with some great music, too. In July, mark your calendar

for the Hudson Valley Hot-Air Balloon Festival, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. At 6 p.m. July 10-11, balloons will be launched near Shadows on the Hudson and at Migliorelli Farms in Tivoli. At 6 a.m. July 11-12, there will be launches at the Dutchess Airport. “Balloon Tycoon” Joe Daily of Q92.1 will be on-site offering regular updates about weather conditions and
launch times throughout the festival. And in August, during the world-famous Dutchess County Fair, the Chamber will hold its Business Expo presented by MidHudson Regional Hospital of Westchester Medical Center, in which members can purchase booths on a daily basis. This opportunity makes it possible for small businesses that otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford a presence at the fair to promote their services at less expense. ing options. Prior to her hire at the Chamber, Nealy worked in multimedia advertising sales for the Poughkeepsie Journal and in admissions at the Culinary Institute of America. Y
ou may have heard that the Special Olympics will be coming to Dutchess County in February 2016. This joint venture with Dutchess County Government and Dutchess Tourism is exciting news for a variety of reasons. Not only is the county thrilled to host such an important event, but the Special Olympics are expected to draw around 2,500 people to our community at a time of year when the cold, snowy weather often brings activity grinding to a halt for our local restaurants, hotels and other businesses. It’s a crucial injection of vitality into our local economy at a time when many businesses often struggle. This highlights a key element of the Chamber’s mission – forming partnerships not only with local firms, but also with nonprofits and other organizations – that aim to bolster the local economy by encouraging more people to utilize our local venues. Visit the Walkway Over the Hudson, and you’ll see another example of the Chamber’s partnerships in the new signage, kiosks and other improvements. These are part of The Greater Walkway Experience Initiative, a joint effort on behalf of the Walkway Over the Hudson, Scenic Hudson and the Cham-
ber that aims to leverage the Walkway’s economic potential by enhancing the Walkway experience and encouraging visitors to explore nearby attractions and businesses. And if you see groups of unfamiliar people around Poughkeepsie wearing nametags or lanyards in midAugust, be sure to thank them for coming! The New York State Funeral Directors Association Inc. has selected the Mid-Hudson Civic Center and The Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel for its annual convention from Aug. 16-19 this year. The event will feature a variety of local activities, including a fireworks show on the Hudson River. Participants will be dining in local restaurants, visiting local tourist spots and becoming better acquainted with everything our fantastic region has to offer. Every day, in so many ways, the Chamber is working to help local businesses thrive. Partnerships that get more visitors to experience our area are an important part of this strategy and a key part of Thinking Local First.

Protect your electronics in the heat
A
s more people use of portable devices such as laptops, iPads and smartphones, the chances of heat destroying these devices increases in the summer. Here are a few easy tips to protect your devices during your summer adventures: It should be a no-brainer, 1. but don’t leave your electronics in your car to weather the summer heat. If you must bring your devices along, put them in the trunk or under your seat where they won’t be in direct sunlight and will stay cooler. If you’re not using your 2. devices, make sure it’s in a shady spot until you need it again. If you are planning to 3. use your device for a long time while outdoors in the sun, think about getting a cooling pad. Try us4. ing a foamed, neo-
prene cover. This material conducts heat less efficiently than cotton or other fibers. Certain kinds of plastic can also help, but make sure you read reviews carefully before making your selection. Devices like Kindles are 5. glare-free a n d can be
used in the sun, but when they are not in use, try to put them in a shaded area. Too much time in direct sunlight can actually bleach your screen. When you are away from 6. home, don’t forget about the devices stored there as well. If you turn off your air-conditioning while you’re on vacation, be sure to set your thermostat to at least 80 to make sure your devices don’t overheat. If you want a single, quick rule of thumb – treat your devices like you treat yourself. If you are too hot in your car or outdoors, chances are pretty good your devices are, too. O
pportunity. We all have our own definitions of it. Adults and youth in our Workforce Development Center Programs are able to dream big and work with their mentors to achieve goals they often felt were unreachable. One goal is achieving a high school diploma or equivalency. Our programs offer professional tutors to help our in-school youth advance a grade level and ultimately earn a high school diploma. We work with Dutchess Community College (on-site) and BOCES (one floor down) to host daily High School Equivalency (HSE) classes for both older youth and adults. Some of our participants will be the first person in their family to achieve a high school diploma. Having a high school diploma or equivalency creates opportunities. Another big goal is finding
stable full-time employment. The road to a full-time job ideally starts early. Our high school students are placed in meaningful internships that help them explore career fields of interest. Internships help some solidify a chosen career path and send others “back to the drawing board,” which can be just as valuable. Part-time employment for a youth can be extremely gratifying and establishes the positive mental connection between earning money and being able to afford immediate needs as well as some “wants”! Most of the adults coming to our program want to work. They want to find a job where they feel connected to their co-workers and are successful members of a team. The Chamber mentors work hard to match their mentees’ skills with an employer’s needs. The relationship doesn’t end when someone starts work. Actually, it has just begun. Helping new workers retain their jobs is just as impor-

We often work with people whose immediate needs must be solved before they can even begin to dream. Establishing stable housing that is not a homeless shelter or borrowing

When a mentor helps a family achieve its basic needs, opportunity knocks. Opportunity is different for everyone, but opportunity elicits hope – and with hope, you can

leadership class ends on high note Golf Mentor Day
S
pring is a busy time for the leadership programming of The Chamber Foundation, especially Leadership Dutchess. As part of the curriculum, the class is responsible for coordinating and executing both a Day of Service Project and a Fundraising Challenge Project. On April 25, the Leadership Dutchess Class of 2015 partnered with Rebuilding Together and to help fix a house on the south side of Poughkeepsie. With around 30 people on hand, the class completed all of the projects assigned by Rebuilding Together and also took on other tasks. Participants painted rooms, sealed windows, repaired and repainted the garage, took up carpeting, landscaped and much, much more. The owner was overwhelmed by the good work the class did and thanked them for all that they accomplished. The purpose of the Leadership Dutchess Day of Service is to give the class an opportunity to pay it forward and learn how beneficial and rewarding volunteering can be. Over the summer months, The Chamber Foundation seeks nonprofits to submit projects they would like Leadership Dutchess to coordinate. If you are, or know of, a nonprofit that has a project for the Leadership Dutchess Class of 2016, please check out chamberFDN.org to find out more information. Proposals are due August 14. On May 14, the class also successfully pulled off Hudson Valley’s first Storage War event. With more than 200 people in attendance, guests enjoyed drink samples from vendors from around the county and food provided by Chocolate Mousse catering. All storage bins were stuffed with raffle prizes – 15 bins were part of an open raffle, and five higher-level bins were part of a
live auction. Two of the five higher-level bins were locked closed – one contained $2,500 cash, the other more than $3,000 in prizes! The evening culminated with a live auction conducted by Rob Doyle, with the two bidders opening their respective storage bins to reveal their winnings. Be sure to read next month’s Bottom Line to find out how much the class raised. Final numbers will be unveiled at the graduation on June 11! as a way to tie in all the leadership skills learned throughout the year. Together, the students must form an entire event from concept to execution. All proceeds benefit future Leadership Dutchess classes as well as The Chamber Foundation. Thank you to Rhett Myers of Vassar Golf Course for hosting our annual Golf Mentoring Day, which is now part of The Chamber Foundation’s Mentorship Program. Students enjoyed learning about golf and how it relates to the game of life. Special thank you to Billy Bob’s BBQ for lunch and to our program sponsor, TD Bank. The Chamber Foundation Mentorship Program pairs students from Poughkeepsie High School with business professionals. The program started in January and will finish in June. Advocacy takes center stage at Chamber legislative breakfast
