t the suggestion of membership, the Chamber has recently introduced a new Health and Wellness Club. The group aims to promote health and wellness among area businesspeople and offers opportunities for everyone to learn about maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The goal of the committee is to create awareness about healthy choices, provide venues for the promotion of Chamber members in the health industry, provide opportuni-

ties to include members’ families in Chamber events, and promote healthy living to the community.

Dr. Pat Heaney, chairperson of the Health and Wellness Club, along with the other committee members, understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The group includes a physician, chiropractor, and nutritionist, as well as others. They hope to partner with many Chamber members and organizations to encourage a holistic and well-rounded approach

to wellness. Chamber CFO Audra Gerty and Nancy Amy, Director of Member Services, serve as the staff liaisons for the committee.

The Health and Wellness Club is excited about the events planned for 2013, including their first, a ski trip at Jiminy Peak scheduled for the first weekend in March. he Institute for Music and Health uses the musical approach inspired by its founder, John Diamond M.D. Originally a psychiatrist, Diamond has practiced for over 50 years developing his Diamond Method for Music, and he is now a world authority on using the arts to help people heal.

he Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse (CPCA) has been working diligently to prevent child abuse in Dutchess County since 1973. Originally named Task Force for Child Protection, CPCA encourages child sexual abuse prevention, multidisciplinary responses to child sexual abuse and severe abuse/neglect, and parent empowerment. At this time, CPCA is serving more than 15,000 children and adults.

Approximately 3,000 child abuse reports are handled each year in Dutchess County. Last year, the Child Advocacy Center (CAC), a CPCA program, worked with 823 of those children. Every year, the CAC serves a growing number of victims. CPCA also helps to educate parents through the Parent Empowerment Pro-

CPCA hopes to expand and develop their programs in a better-suited environment that would benefit both the workers and clients, with additional space and technology needed to serve the growing population of child victims.

CPCA further wishes to fill the walls of its new CAC with tiles of child artwork. A generous Ulster County artist is making these tiles onto which art can be scanned. Making your website an online business

ver the past several months, the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce has been working with Walkway Over the Hudson and Scenic Hudson on a comprehensive plan to help create, label, brand and promote the new “Greater Walkway Region.”

These efforts have included a large number of organizations and representatives from municipalities on both sides of the Hudson. We are all working together to boost the profile of the Greater Walkway Region, bring tourists to the Hudson River Valley and help the local economy by generating increased revenues and tax dollars. The Chamber has been working on behalf of our members to attain these goals.

The Poughkeepsie Journal noted these efforts in a recent editorial in particular the branding aspect of it. They wrote: One strategy is to create sharp, prominent signs promoting the “Greater Walkway Region” and using color codes and icons to depict the various offerings, from shops and restaurants to scenic views. These signs will be placed in neighboring areas around the span, enticing Walkway visitors to explore the surrounding communities.

Chamber members as well as the business community at-large have the opportunity to get involved in these efforts. There will be dozens of signs on both sides of the river directing visitors to the

Greater Walkway District. These signs will be large and very visible, and they can include your name as a way of promoting a business or organization. They will be placed throughout neighborhoods in Poughkeepsie and Highland, around parking lots, the train station, rail trails and more.

The Chamber has already committed to sponsoring one of these signs, located at the Parker Avenue parking lot at the east entrance to the Walkway. Attractive sponsorship packages will soon be available for all size businesses and organizations, and if you are interested in helping support these efforts and being recognized on one or more of these signs you should keep an eye out for more information from us, the Walkway and Scenic Hudson in the coming weeks.

This is truly one of the top tourist destinations in the Northeast.

We hope to not only attract people to our great communities, but also keep them here to take advantage of our wonderful restaurants, attractions and retail shops. Let’s all work together to embrace the Greater Walkway Region, showcase our area businesses, and (as always) Think Local First!

The sky is the limit when you use the Cloud for technology

H

osted Exchange may be something you’ve heard about in conjunction with the “Cloud” on recent technology posts or in the news. Let’s understand what it is and what it could mean to your business.

Instead of having a physical server at your office that handles all of your email accounts, shared calendars and contact features that you need to maintain, update and keep running so you have email when you want it, your email accounts and associated information are hosted by a provider across the Internet on their virtual server in the cloud.

What’s the advantage of this

verses the traditional method?

For one, you have almost continuous access to your email at all times and it offers you a variety of features. You have none of the maintenance or management headaches that come with having your own physical server. If you don’t have an IT person on staff, this makes creating and managing accounts as simple as a phone call or email to your provider.

You also receive automatic back up of all mail accounts with most service providers, so if anything ever becomes corrupt and needs to be restored, the information is readily available – can you say the same about the accounts set up on your actual exchange server?

This isn’t something you want to enter into lightly; you want to make sure you consider all the factors including the costs involved, as a hosted exchange provider has a lot of options on how they decide to charge you for your accounts and their maintenance.

Depending on the size of your business, it could be more costeffective to keep your physical

server environment in place.

Hosted Exchange offers options like “Encryption” that ensures you are HIPAA compliant. Spam filtering is standard and it may be easier and more cost-effective to pay for Hosted Exchange accounts than to worry about obtaining all these pieces yourself. Timing is another factor. Moving from a traditional server to Hosted Exchange may only make sense if your current server is at its end of life. Another

consideration is your Internet connection. You may need to consider establishing a redundant Internet connection to make sure you always have access your email. As with any technology decision, look at the big picture.

he Woman’s Leadership Alliance (WLA) will once again be marching over the Walkway Over the Hudson in commemoration and support of International Women’s Day. Celebrated around the world on March 8, International Women’s Day raises awareness of women’s issues and highlights their many accomplishments. This year’s theme, The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum, focuses on these achievements and the progression of equality throughout time, while also encouraging women to remain persistent for further change.

The event begins at 2:30 p.m. with a ceremony in honor of International Women’s Day. The march over the Walkway then commences at 4:15. Attendees should meet at the Poughkeepsie entrance to the Walkway Over the Hudson, 61 Parker Avenue. It is suggested that participants park on the Highland side of the Walkway, where they will be shuttled to the location and back to their cars at the end of the walk. The entire event, including parking, is complementary.

Women’s Development Center opens at Marist

n January 31, the Women’s Enterprise Development Center Inc. (WEDC) celebrated the grand opening of the new Mid-Hudson Satellite Center located in the Hancock Center on the campus of Marist College.

Since 1997, entrepreneurs have turned to the non-profit WEDC for guidance, and now more than 1,000 women are graduates of the organization’s training courses. With the addition of this new satellite office, the WEDC will now make affordable, high-quality business training available to the residents of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester counties.

The goal of WEDC is to aid aspiring entrepreneurs and existing business owners in acquiring the skills, tools, and resources needed to achieve economic self-sufficiency. In turn, it hopes the businesses it helps start strengthen the local community and economy. The corporation believes in the strength of small business to create job opportunities for the region through their expanding success. WEDC wants to encourage this success through counseling, workshops, networking, and a variety of other methods. Clients will not only have access to this wealth of knowledge, but also to the technology offered in the Hancock

Center at Marist.

Lea Bishop, WEDC Satellite Director, began the grand opening event by explaining the mission of WEDC and the goals this new office hopes to accomplish.

Following Bishop, Hudson Valley Regional Director Susan Spear from the Office of U.S. SenaBIShoP tor Kirsten Gillibrand addressed the crowd.

In October, Senator Gillibrand encouraged the U.S. Economic Development Agency (EDA) to invest $488,000 in the WEDC. Beverly Franklin, co-owner of the small business Measured To Fit, is excited about the prospects the new incubator will have. “This organization will transform our business,” she said.

Franklin went on to express that there was still so much for her to learn about running a business and the WEDC would help to make her company more solid.
