Holdings consisting of the largest private undeveloped land site in Penghu County, Taiwan. In 2012, Claremont purchased the Nevele Grande in New York, and also in 2012, Claremont negotiated casino development rights for a property in South Florida. All three projects are on track for development into destination gaming resorts in the coming years.

Also, Dr. Kari Reiber, Dutchess County’s Acting Commissioner of Health, will discuss the 2013-2017 Community Health Assessment and Improvement Plan, which is the culmination of a multi-year collaborative process to identify opportunities to improve the health of our county.

ven nearly a decade later, I still feel honored to have been chosen as one of the Hudson Valley’s inaugural Forty Under 40 Shaker Award recipients way back in 2006.

That day is special to me for a number of reasons. Personally, my wife and I were just moments away from the birth of our daughter when the event took place. Professionally, it was amazing to have my work highlighted among the wonderful contributions of 39 other leaders and citizens who care just as much as the Hudson Valley as I do. The easiest thing anyone in the business community can do to help us become bigger, better, more responsive and more inclusive is to send us a referral.

You know you’re doing business with someone who is not yet part of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

It could be a supplier, a vendor, the place next door – anyone. If you could do me a favor, take a couple of minutes and tell them why you’re a Chamber member. Then let us know that you did, and we’ll have our membership department get in touch. Doing this is easy too. Just go to dcrcoc.org/ referrals, provide us with some basic information, and you’re done. Or you can call our office and we’ll get that information from you.

By sending us a referral, you’re helping us grow our membership base. This means we’ve got a stronger community to draw from to be sure that the people we

Ways to make your website mobile

obile apps are no longer the “wave of the future”.

They’re here now, and they’re here to stay! Do you need one for your business? Here’s what you need to know: • A mobile app is generally something that provides a unique user service or experience that someone can NOT get by simply going to your website. Don’t bother just duplicating your web content. That’s unnecessary.

• If you want to provide a simple representation of your company as an app, check out CONDUIT MOBILE, or something like it. You pay a monthly fee for a simple app and you can be up and running in minutes. Be prepared to answer the question “Does anyone care?”

• If you want something custom that takes advantage of the latest features of mobile devices, like

MAXIMIZE YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE:

Apps can be expensive; in many cases more than a web site, so generally you want to plan on building something that drives revenue, sales, or visibility. Make sure you are providing a service people want, and not just a commercial for your business.

Be prepared for a long process (6 months to a year) of develop-

ment, testing, submitting to the various app stores, and be prepared for possible rejection. Apple only approves apps they think are useful, or different.

In short, start with a website.

Look at the opportunities for a mobile version or custom mobile experience. Develop a mobile app ONLY if you think you have something unique to offer with revenue generating potential, that people will want to use on a mobile device!

Be prepared so Mother Nature doesn’t damage electronics

A

s we hopefully prepare for spring after what was a rough and downright frigid winter here in the northeast, let’s talk about the weather and how it can affect your favorite electronics. Sure, we all know it’s not good to leave your phone out in the rain or drop it in a bucket of water. However, maybe you are less familiar with some of the more subtle weather effects that can damage your electronics or smart phones.

Here is a small list of some weather conditions that could catch you off guard: Wind – I know, you are probably scratching your head at this

Humidity – Maybe you thought you knew about this one already, but did you realize that

actual debris. Dust and sand can cause severe damage to electronics over time and that’s why it is important to try and clean your keyboards, dirty fans in your tower, etc.

So as you deal with what could be the last burst of winter before spring finally makes it way here to greet us, be careful and mindful when using your electronics.

These sensitive devices may not like the sometimes severe changes in weather, just like their human counterparts.

Since the campaign’s inception, The Feinstein Foundation has raised over $2 billion for more than 1,800 agencies and houses of worship nationwide, helping the needy. The Beverly Closs Food Pantry at Dutchess Outreach is experiencing a major food shortage due to a significant increase in demand.

More than 800 people were served in January; more than 300 of them children! The pantry provides a three-day supply of food to low-income families, senior citizens, the unemployed and to those who are unable to work. Items needed the most include: canned meats (such as hash, stews, etc.), tuna, canned vegetables, fruits, soups, canned yams, potatoes, spaghetti, pasta, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, jelly, powdered milk, cereals and juices.

The Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is proud to partner with Hudson River Housing’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program to help create a database of employers willing to help out of work veterans.

Participating employers will be connected with SSVF case managers for more information.

Funded primarily through the VA, the goal of the SSVF program

A healthy strategy can let you deal with the effects of diabetes

iabetes is a demanding disease. Because of Topical BioMedics’ active involvement helping with people who suffer from diabetes, we have insights into just how challenging it is.

A person with diabetes needs to deal with the disease throughout their entire day. They have to regularly pause to ask themselves how they are feeling, remember the last time they ate, and determine whether they need to test their blood. New York State high school equivalency: A new era

or seven decades, the term “GED� was synonymous with attainment of a high school equivalency diploma. At the start of the new year, the GED was replaced with a new exam that also will lead to a high school equivalency diploma in New York state.

The new exam, the Test Assessing Secondary Completion or TASC, is similar to its predecessor

The staff of this organization goes out of the way on a regular basis in order to make sure that we are taking full advantage of everything they have to offer, which, by the way, is a lot.

in many ways. It is still a paper and pencil test and it still consists of five content areas: reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Since there is some prior knowledge required specifically for the science and social studies sections, students are advised to take a preparatory course for the exam.

We are fortunate in New York state that there has never been a charge for taking the exam that leads to a high school equivalency diploma. This continues

to be true; there is no charge for taking the TASC exam in New York State.

For those students who tested prior to January 2014 and received a diploma, that diploma continues to be valid. For students who tested and did not pass the exam, it is possible to carry over some of the scores. Students should contact a high school equivalency (HSE) preparation program for more information on this regulation.

Dutchess Community College

offers the TASC exam preparation classes in Poughkeepsie, Wappingers, Beacon, Millerton, Amenia, Dover Plains, Pawling, and Brewster with classes offered in both English and Spanish. Tuition for all HSE classes is $20.
