ear from developer Michael Treanor, founder of Claremont Partners Limited, about how the proposed Nevele Resort and Casino can positively impact the Hudson Valley at the March Contact Breakfast on Wednesday, March 19 from 7:30-9 a.m. at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel. Treanor has over 20 years of real estate and investment experience. He graduated from The College of the Holy Cross in 1988 and earned a Juris Doctor in 1992 from Fordham University School of Law. In 2011, Treanor founded Claremont Partners Limited to focus on early-stage gaming projects. In 2011, Claremont purchased all of the assets of AMZ
Holdings consisting of the largest private undeveloped land site in Penghu County, Taiwan. In 2012, Claremont purchased the Nevele Grande in New York, and also in 2012, Claremont negotiated casino development rights for a property in South Florida. All three projects are on track for development into destination gaming resorts in the coming years. Also, Dr. Kari Reiber, Dutchess County’s Acting Commissioner of Health, will discuss the 2013-2017 Community Health Assessment and Improvement Plan, which is the culmination of a multi-year collaborative process to identify opportunities to improve the health of our county.

ven nearly a decade later, I still feel honored to have been chosen as one of the Hudson Valley’s inaugural Forty Under 40 Shaker Award recipients way back in 2006. That day is special to me for a number of reasons. Personally, my wife and I were just moments away from the birth of our daughter when the event took place. Professionally, it was amazing to have my work highlighted among the wonderful contributions of 39 other leaders and citizens who care just as much as the Hudson Valley as I do. Then when you factor in the
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR:
Ori Brachfeld fact that the recipients were chosen by a group of our peers, it makes the award even more special. That’s why I’m proud to encourage you to meet and appreciate this year’s “movers and shakers. You can check them out online by visiting dcrcoc.org and then pur-
chase your tickets to attend the annual awards ceremony event, this year scheduled for Tuesday, April 22 at The Bardavon in Poughkeepsie with a reception at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel to precede the festivities. All the information is on the Chamber’s website. Congratulations again to the worthy honorees. And to those that weren’t chosen – we received over 120 applications this year – keep doing your thing, don’t stop working to make our hometown better, and apply again next year. If we all band together, there’s nothing we can’t do.

Message from the
Chamber President Charles S. North
D
o you have five minutes to make our Chamber better? The easiest thing anyone in the business community can do to help us become bigger, better, more responsive and more inclusive is to send us a referral. You know you’re doing business with someone who is not yet part of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. It could be a supplier, a vendor, the place next door – anyone. If you could do me a favor, take a couple of minutes and tell them why you’re a Chamber member. Then let us know that you did, and we’ll have our membership department get in touch. Doing this is easy too. Just go to dcrcoc.org/ referrals, provide us with some basic information, and you’re done. Or you can call our office and we’ll get that information from you. By sending us a referral, you’re helping us grow our membership base. This means we’ve got a stronger community to draw from to be sure that the people we
do business with believe in the values of the Think Local First campaign and see the reward in giving back to the local community. It also means that when we go and approach our state senators or U.S. congressmen or even the governor, there’s more weight behind what we say. It’s another person to network with, a new product to try, a potential new customer for your business or your friend’s business, another potential volunteer or sponsor for your favorite community event and who knows what else. So please, send us a referral. Then make sure you’re doing business with fellow Chamber members. A great place to start is by checking out our new, streamlined member directory that you’ll be receiving shortly. Keep and eye out, and keep on Thinking Local First. Sincerely,
Charles S. North President & CEO

Ways to make your website mobile
M
obile apps are no longer the “wave of the future”. They’re here now, and they’re here to stay! Do you need one for your business? Here’s what you need to know: • A mobile app is generally something that provides a unique user service or experience that someone can NOT get by simply going to your website. Don’t bother just duplicating your web content. That’s unnecessary. • If you want to provide a simple representation of your company as an app, check out CONDUIT MOBILE, or something like it. You pay a monthly fee for a simple app and you can be up and running in minutes. Be prepared to answer the question “Does anyone care?” • If you want something custom that takes advantage of the latest features of mobile devices, like
MAXIMIZE YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE:
Neil Eisenberg tracking, mapping, alerts etc., then you want to look for a reputable mobile app developer, and start planning. Apps can be expensive; in many cases more than a web site, so generally you want to plan on building something that drives revenue, sales, or visibility. Make sure you are providing a service people want, and not just a commercial for your business. Be prepared for a long process (6 months to a year) of develop-
ment, testing, submitting to the various app stores, and be prepared for possible rejection. Apple only approves apps they think are useful, or different. In short, start with a website. Look at the opportunities for a mobile version or custom mobile experience. Develop a mobile app ONLY if you think you have something unique to offer with revenue generating potential, that people will want to use on a mobile device! Be prepared so Mother Nature doesn’t damage electronics
A
s we hopefully prepare for spring after what was a rough and downright frigid winter here in the northeast, let’s talk about the weather and how it can affect your favorite electronics. Sure, we all know it’s not good to leave your phone out in the rain or drop it in a bucket of water. However, maybe you are less familiar with some of the more subtle weather effects that can damage your electronics or smart phones. Here is a small list of some weather conditions that could catch you off guard: Wind – I know, you are probably scratching your head at this
one, and in and of itself, not a particular threat. However, wind usually carries with it teeny tiny particulate, from dust to sand or
Solar Radiation – This is actually a serious problem for those in the communication industry if you weren’t aware. This can actually garble radio transmission and fry electronics on satellites or in antennas. During strong solar activity, shortwave communications are particularly problematic, with range being significantly affected. Satellite operation, particularly those used for global positioning systems, television and radio sustain the harshest affects. Humidity – Maybe you thought you knew about this one already, but did you realize that
actual debris. Dust and sand can cause severe damage to electronics over time and that’s why it is important to try and clean your keyboards, dirty fans in your tower, etc.
the lower the humidity, the more likely it is that damaging static charges will build up quickly? Most of us are quick to recognize that in high humidity, condensation within electronics can cause problems and even corrosion. Those devices moved between two different environments with changing humidity levels should be given time to adjust to room temperature. Some devices, such as VCR’s will have a humidity sensor that will prevent the device from powering up when dangerous condensation levels are detected.
So as you deal with what could be the last burst of winter before spring finally makes it way here to greet us, be careful and mindful when using your electronics. These sensitive devices may not like the sometimes severe changes in weather, just like their human counterparts. But what if it were? What will an intruder observe about your business and your life? This seminar will give attendees the
tools that will build layers of security. To register for this webinar, visit dcrcoc.org or call 845-4541700 ext. 1000. Whether you’re technical or non-technical, you still have the opportunity to be a member of the IT Committee. The group meets once a month on a Thurs-

All cash, checks and food items donated to Dutchess Outreach from March 1 to April 30 will be counted toward the Feinstein Challenge. For the 17th consecutive year, The Feinstein Foundation, a philanthropic organization devoted to ending hunger in the United States, will divide $1 million among hunger fighting agencies nationwide us-

Since the campaign’s inception, The Feinstein Foundation has raised over $2 billion for more than 1,800 agencies and houses of worship nationwide, helping the needy. The Beverly Closs Food Pantry at Dutchess Outreach is experiencing a major food shortage due to a significant increase in demand. More than 800 people were served in January; more than 300 of them children! The pantry provides a three-day supply of food to low-income families, senior citizens, the unemployed and to those who are unable to work. Items needed the most include: canned meats (such as hash, stews, etc.), tuna, canned vegetables, fruits, soups, canned yams, potatoes, spaghetti, pasta, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, jelly, powdered milk, cereals and juices. Many braved the unrelenting snow and came out to celebrate the Grand Opening of Bounce! Trampoline Sports in Poughkeepsie. Some jumped and bounced for hours while others just took in all the action from the sidelines. The WOLF Radio station was on hand to broadcast from the facility as well as give out prizes and even New York State Senator Terry Gipson came by for the ribbon cutting. People were encouraged to indicate which organization they were supporting and by the end of the day The Boys and Girls Clubs of Kingston had received a donation of $2,950 while Vassar Brothers Medical Center received $1,560 and the Boy Scouts of America Hudson Valley totaled $1,050. “We were thrilled to see so many folks come out to support these important local organizations and have such fun doing it,” stated Co-Owner Bill Mer-

A healthy strategy can let you deal with the effects of diabetes By Lou Paradise, President, Topical BioMedics Member: Health and Wellness Club
D
iabetes is a demanding disease. Because of Topical BioMedics’ active involvement helping with people who suffer from diabetes, we have insights into just how challenging it is. A person with diabetes needs to deal with the disease throughout their entire day. They have to regularly pause to ask themselves how they are feeling, remember the last time they ate, and determine whether they need to test their blood. Depending on the results of testing (or guessing their blood sugar level), they
must plan when to eat or take their next insulin shot. This is just a ‘snapshot’ of how managing diabetes greatly impacts those dealing with it as well as their family members. When a loved one is diagnosed with diabetes, it can be stressful for everyone. Spouses can feel stressed adjusting to dietary restrictions or medication management. Children might feel anxious with changes in routine, including doctor visits and daily blood glucose monitoring. Further complicating the situation is the fact that 60-70 percent of people with diabetes have neuropathy – a burning pain in their feet – that can interfere with sleep
Health
& Wellness and the desire to stay active. So having a good health strategy is important for the diabetic and their family. Making healthier eating choices together, enjoying regular physical activities as a family, says “We can do something about this, and overcome this challenge together.” For 20 years Topricin pain relief products have provided families affected by diabetes education and pain relief solutions to end the misery of neuropathy, and enjoy a full, robust lifestyle. New York State high school equivalency: A new era By Lydia Binotto Dutchess Community College
F
or seven decades, the term “GED was synonymous with attainment of a high school equivalency diploma. At the start of the new year, the GED was replaced with a new exam that also will lead to a high school equivalency diploma in New York state. The new exam, the Test Assessing Secondary Completion or TASC, is similar to its predecessor

oining the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce has been one of the best decisions I have made towards growing my business. The staff of this organization goes out of the way on a regular basis in order to make sure that we are taking full advantage of everything they have to offer, which, by the way, is a lot.
in many ways. It is still a paper and pencil test and it still consists of five content areas: reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Since there is some prior knowledge required specifically for the science and social studies sections, students are advised to take a preparatory course for the exam. We are fortunate in New York state that there has never been a charge for taking the exam that leads to a high school equivalency diploma. This continues
to be true; there is no charge for taking the TASC exam in New York State. For those students who tested prior to January 2014 and received a diploma, that diploma continues to be valid. For students who tested and did not pass the exam, it is possible to carry over some of the scores. Students should contact a high school equivalency (HSE) preparation program for more information on this regulation. Dutchess Community College
offers the TASC exam preparation classes in Poughkeepsie, Wappingers, Beacon, Millerton, Amenia, Dover Plains, Pawling, and Brewster with classes offered in both English and Spanish. Tuition for all HSE classes is $20. Those with questions or wishing to register may call the Office of Community Services at Dutchess Community College at (845) 4318905. Students also may register in person at the DCC main campus, DCC South, or at other sites throughout the county.

There is always something going on through the chamber and they are continually adding more. As a small business owner, I always want to make sure that everything I do adds value to my company. That’s why whenever I see an opening in my schedule, the first thing I often do is check the calendar on dcrcoc. org to see what’s going on because anything they have going on is well worthwhile.
This is one of the most well run organizations I have ever encountered. So much so that I have even used some principles from the chamber as examples to help other organizations I belong to run more effectively. On top of that, the chamber staff consists of some of the smartest, most talented, funny, and all around good people I cannot say enough I have ever had the good things about pleasure of knowing. the Dutchess County Even before joining, Regional Chamber they were all so of Commerce. Since dcrcoc.org/ welcoming and I joined, it has been testimonials a source helpful. Immediately of valuable upon joining, the staff all new business connections, went out of their way to get information, friendships, and to know me and to make sure that support. It has been one of the they are helping in any way they best things I have ever done for my possibly could. business.
