Molinaro speaking on economy at breakfast

D

utchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro will deliver an abridged version of his 2015 State of the County address at the March Contact Breakfast on Wednesday, March 18 from 7:30-9 a.m. at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel.

Molinaro was elected to be Dutchess County’s 7th County Executive in November 2011 with 62% of the vote. At the age of 36, he took office as the youngest County Executive in Dutchess County history. He has previously served in the New York State Assembly and Dutchess County Legislature after beginning his political career as Mayor of Tivoli at the age of 18, making him the youngest mayor in the nation at the time.

PCI Compliance and your business

B

usinesses that use credit cards to process payments may already be familiar with the term PCI Compliance, but for those who may not be familiar this refers to the data security standards businesses who accept credit cards as payment must have in place to keep customer’s payment card data secure. The size of the business is one of the determining factors in the specific compliance requirements, but how do you go about making sure you have the proper measures in place?

First, assess – identify cardholder data, take an inventory of your IT assets and business processes for payment card processing, and analyze them for vulnerabilities that could expose cardholder data.

Second, remediate – fix any vulnerability and do not store card-

Third, report – compile and submit required remediation records (if applicable), and submit compliance reports to the acquiring bank and card brands you do business with.

The above three items may seem pretty common sense, but if you want more specifics, you’ll need to find out what your card brand may require as there are differences in standards among American Express, Discover, Visa, MasterCard, etc. In addition to

handling concerns about storing data, you must also research the requirements for the disposal of data.

Once you have all the proper network security pieces in place, as well as the processes of storing or deleting any customer data, you must continue to be vigilant against threats. This means you should be evaluating your systems regularly and testing your access control measures. You’ll also need to ensure you maintain your security policies and keep them up to date as the standards change.

arking the occasion for the fifth consecutive year, the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Women’s Leadership Alliance (WLA) is proud to celebrate International Women’s Day on Saturday, March 7 at 9 a.m. on the Poughkeepsie side of the Walkway Over the Hudson.

The WLA invites everyone to honor the achievements of women while remaining vigilant and tenacious for further sustainable change. For complete information about the event and to register, visit wlahv. org.

here are a lot of ways to Think Local First.

Certainly, when you shop and when you dine (and even when you shop online), I hope you’ll Think Local First, but for those of us in the business community, there are other things to keep in mind.

First, when you purchase supplies or services for your business, are you using local vendors? Just recently, the Chamber sent a note to all of our members in the food industry about Taste NY, Governor Cuomo’s program asking Empire State restaurants to commit to using locally sourced products.

We’re so fortunate to have the quality of food that we have here in the Hudson Valley, and the Chamber is happy to encourage all of our member restaurants, bars, farms and producers to support each other and the local community. If there’s a similar cause in your industry, let us know about it, and we’ll make sure others do as well.

I also hope you’re Thinking Local First when you

give back. There are so many worthy causes here in our local community that are deserving of support.

When it comes time for your business to support one that’s near and dear to you, I hope you take that chance.

The Chamber is happy to highlight some of these causes each month via our Nonprofit Awareness Program. WLA seeking mentors and mentees

C

an you recall someone in your personal or professional life that changed everything for you? Someone who took you under their wing and offered moral support, shared expertise and offered advice—all so you could flourish? There is, perhaps, nothing more rewarding than making that kind of difference in someone’s life or learning valuable skills from a seasoned professional to help you create your destiny— not to mention building lifelong friendships.

The Women’s Leadership Alliance Mentor Program began in February 2009 with a pilot group of 11. This first six-month program

was such a success, the program was extended to a year and we are about to wrap up and celebrate our sixth group of Mentors and Mentees.

With spring around the corner, it is time for new beginnings and we are ready and anxious to receive a new set of candidates.

We have quite a few experienced Mentors that will be available, but we are always looking for new volunteers. Though this initiative is spearheaded by the WLA, we welcome men as well. If you are a DCRCOC member, please consider joining this dynamic program.

While all the events have been successful, some develop into annual Foundation activities – such as our wing madness event, now known as Pigskins and Pints. With last year’s class “hitting it out of the park” by raising over $25,000 and creating unique partnerships along the way, this is the perfect opportunity to build upon their success and have some more fun along the way!

Please consider joining the planning committee for our 2015 Home Run Helicopter Drop. The committee will be responsible for selling baseballs, promoting the event and be involved in the overall planning.

The concept of the event is simple: after the Renegades game on August 5, a helicopter will fly over Dutchess Stadium and drop nearly 2,000 baseballs onto the field. The ball that falls into the targeted area will win $2,000! Plus there will be other prize opportunities throughout the event as well.

Baseballs will be sold for $10. A special game-day package will be available that will include a ticket to the game and baseball for the drop.

Leadership Dutchess learns about boards

n January 8, Leadership Dutchess held a session on Board Roles and Responsibilities at Anderson Center for Autism. Presenters included Andrea Reynolds and Jennifer Killian of Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley and Maureen Crush of de Ramon Crush, PC. In the afternoon, the class met with a panel of distinguished board members who brought a wealth of knowledge to share about becoming a board member.
