TEG Federal Credit traces its origin to 1969, when teachers from the Wappingers Central school district decided to create an alternative to the banks they had been using. Desiring a financial institution that would provide fair and equitable treatment, they successfully chartered the Wappingers Central Federal Credit Union. Over the years, membership expanded; first offering the benefits of credit union membership to the government workers of Dutchess County and then, in 2002, offering service all who live, work, worship or attend school in New York’s Dutchess, Or-

ange and Ulster counties. With their expansion, the credit union’s name changed to Taconic Educational and Governmental Federal Credit Union, or TEG Federal Credit Union as they are known by today. The New York State Bridge Authority was born out of the necessity for a bridge over the Hudson River which would link the city of Hudson and the village of Catskill. On March 31, 1932, Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law a bill

sponsored by Greene County Assemblyman Ellis Bentley that created the Bridge Authority as an entity that would issue toll revenue bonds to pay for what would become the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. The New York State Bridge Authority has been selfsufficient throughout its more than seventy-five year history, operating without Federal or State tax monies and reinvesting toll revenues to continue to maintain and improve these vital Hudson River Crossings.

Honoring outstanding individuals he Chamber recently announced the Hudson Valley’s top Forty Under 40 honorees, and the list is full of future leaders from our com munity. The Forty Under 40, Mover & Shaker Awards are presented annually to 40 top young profes sionals who have shown a strong commitment to the Hudson Valley. The selected honorees are indi viduals who go be yond their careers, working to enhance their local com munity and beyond. More than 100 nominations were submitted this year, and the list of talent ranges across a wide variety of industries. I am very impressed with the forte and dedication that these young

he Chamber Foundation is accepting mentee applications for its Career Achievement Mentorship Program. This unique mentorship program pairs mentees and mentors for a yearlong mentorship relationship. Together mentees and mentors build a relationship, set goals and plan for the future. hank you to the Women’s Leadership Alliance for asking me to share a little bit about myself in advance of International Women’s Day. This year's theme is "Better the balance, better the world." This is such an unusual statement but I find it to be so true regarding my own life and experiences. I, Ruth Faircloth, was raised in the Hudson Valley by my migrant family. I became a farm Ruthfen Faircloth worker and a wife to Bishop Max Faircloth and a mother to five children. I'm also a proud grandmother of 13, a great grandma to two, as well as being a professional! When I look and wonder sometimes how my life touches other people, I think of my mother. I had a mother who was just a migrant woman but she had a big love for helping people. When I think of leaves falling from the tree, I think of myself and my mom. I have a love for children and I have a love for our community of women. I think that by growing up on the farm and in the rural area, I became connected with a organizational call that I had to answer. Through rural and migrant

Career Action Center mentors are stationed in Poughkeepsie High School to provide students with the necessary skills to identify and pursue their career interests and/or obtain employment. Mentors also facilitate an intensive job and career readiness mentoring program to 50 juniors and seniors at Poughkeepsie High School. The Career Action Center is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Poughkeepsie City School District and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Students access opportunity at college showcase By Nancy Herrera Career Action Center Mentor

ince 2014, the mission of the Career Action Center has always focused on providing youth with opportunities to explore various institutions of higher education. This year, in unison of the center’s mission, students participated in the 2019 National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Historically Black College Experience Showcase held on Staten Island. Since their inception, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) have promoted access to higher education for African-American students. Today, there are an estimated 101 HBCUs throughout the country

and 22 of them participated in this year’s showcase; notably Kentucky State University and Howard University. Ajunae Boston, a junior at Poughkeepsie High School, said, “I think it is really important to learn about HBCUs because it is part of

our history. We had the chance to talk to recruiters from all around the county.” Upon arrival, students received bags filled with information about the various schools in attendance. They were greeted by Staten Island NAACP members who were proud to share their 9th showcase. It was a day filled with knowledge and empowerment geared towards providing more opportunities for students. If interested, students were provided with interview attire including suits and ties. There were practice rooms in which organizers would conduct mock interviews with the students before they met with recruiters. Two workshops were held throughout the day: one helped students and parents navi-

Youth One Stop (YOS) is a comprehensive education and job-training program utilizing local resources to benefit at-risk youth in Dutchess County. The program is open to income-eligible youth, ages 14-24 who are facing obstacles inhibiting them from completing school, finishing their HSE or gaining employment. Youth One Stop is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board and The Chamber Foundation, Inc.

This young lady continues to take advantage of the workshops and activities we provide. As part of her initiative, she completed a transitional job with the Pines of Poughkeepsie to gain experience and pursue her goal. She successfully completed her classes at BOCES and earned her nursing assistant certificate. Through her work as an activity aid for the Pines of Poughkeepsie, she now holds a part-time nursing assistant position! Her ambition doesn’t stop there; she is now

attending Dutchess Community College for her nursing major. As a young mother, Jhaytem’s maturity and passion is quite apparent. She is a positive presence in our program and is always sharing that energy with the other participants. Jhaytem is committed to furthering her career. She

promises not to stop until she reaches her ultimate dream. As she works towards making her dream a reality, Jhaytem is appreciative of the Youth One Stop program. Youth One Stop is proud to say that this powerful woman is a success story for our program.

s a Case Manager for the Workforce Connections program of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, my position requires a fair amount of community outreach. Typically I focus my outreach efforts on two specific groups: community agencies and members of the community. The goal is to connect with community agencies, becoming aware of their services and how we can support each other. Areas of support that we solicit for include, but are not limited to, housing, food, clothing, childcare, and driving lessons. This outreach is a two-way street. I educate our community partners on the mission of the Work-

force Connections Program. In turn, our partners make connections, supporting members of the community in a real way. Through this outreach, we create relationships and offer case management to income-eligible individuals who are responsible for at least one minor. Part of our initiative is the empowerment of our community; we teach soft skills, assist with resume writing, and conduct mock interviews with the intention of our participants gaining, and retaining employment. Workforce Connections participants come to us from the community. Every case we work with informs our outreach program. As much as we support each individual, each individual also supports our programming by spreading the word. Connecting people with the services they need is extremely rewarding for all involved.

Chazen wins award for engineering excellence The Chazen Companies has been selected by The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC) for a 2019 Silver Award in Engineering Excellence. Chazen’s Alternatives Analysis for the Kaal Rock Park Connector won the Silver Award in the category of Studies, Research and Consulting Engineering Services. Chazen coordinated with Scenic Hudson and the Poughkeepsie Alliance to develop a design for the proposed suspended walkway and associated park improvements in the City of Poughkeepsie just north of the Mid-Hudson Bridge. Music festival coming to Airport in June What is certain to be one of the top rock performances of the summer has been announced, with the 2019 edition of the Tail Winds Music Fest. An angelic donation received by organization Angels of Light, a Hudson Valley 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization that provides holiday giving to children and families with life-threatening illnesses, is receiving a much needed digital facelift from local marketing agency Tipsy Social. Angels of Light has grown tremendously in the last four years, with the 2018 holiday season being the largest in its history. Their accomplishments have earned them national recognition, and most recently named them 2019 “Heroes of the Year” by Ronald McDonald House of the Greater Hudson Valley. Tipsy Social, a Hudson Valley agency offering comprehensive marketing and design solutions to small businesses, became involved with Angels of Light as a holiday Giving Tree sponsor.
