org or calling 845.454.1700 x 1000. Tickets are $25 for members and $35 for non-members. Marcus J. Molinaro was elected as Dutchess County’s 7th County Executive in November 2011. Upon taking office, he sought to create a comprehensive economic development strategy, one that more aggressively attracts and retains private sector companies and jobs. Since 2012, Marc and his administration have transformed the way County Government does business – making it smaller, smarter, and more effective. Marc has been leader on Open Space Protection and Farmland Preservation, an advocate to preserve the Hudson River Valley Greenway and a supporter of the Greenway Compact. In 2015, Marc launched “Think Differently,” an initiative to ensure equal access

and service, along with greater outreach, to those living with special needs and developmental disabilities. Now, nearly 100 communities across New York are implementing the “Think Differently” principles. Marshall & Sterling Insurance is proud to sponsor the March Contact Breakfast. Celebrating 155 years in business, Marshall & Sterling is a full-service insurance, benefits and risk management agency headquartered in the City of Poughkeepsie. With over 25 branch offices and over 450 employees throughout New York, Michigan, Virginia, Florida, California, and the US Virgin Islands, Marshall & Sterling Insurance is currently ranked the 32nd largest independent insurance agency among more than 40,000 privately held insurance agencies

Business After Hours returns to network at the CIA

E

njoy gourmet hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar all while networking at the Culinary Institute of America in the Marriott Pavilion for the next Business After Hours on Wednesday, March 27 from 5-7 PM. This complimentary event is sponsored by TEG Federal Credit Union and the New York State Bridge Authority. Pre-registration is requested. To RSVP, visit dcrcoc. org or call 845.454.1700, x 1000. The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) is widely recognized as the world’s premier culinary college. Their industry-wide reputation for excellence is evidenced by their outstanding faculty, passion-

ate students, and more than 50,000 accomplished alumni across more than seven decades. TEG Federal Credit traces its origin to 1969, when teachers from the Wappingers Central school district decided to create an alternative to the banks they had been using. Desiring a financial institution that would provide fair and equitable treatment, they successfully chartered the Wappingers Central Federal Credit Union. Over the years, membership expanded; first offering the benefits of credit union membership to the government workers of Dutchess County and then, in 2002, offering service all who live, work, worship or attend school in New York’s Dutchess, Or-

ange and Ulster counties. With their expansion, the credit union’s name changed to Taconic Educational and Governmental Federal Credit Union, or TEG Federal Credit Union as they are known by today. The New York State Bridge Authority was born out of the necessity for a bridge over the Hudson River which would link the city of Hudson and the village of Catskill. On March 31, 1932, Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law a bill

sponsored by Greene County Assemblyman Ellis Bentley that created the Bridge Authority as an entity that would issue toll revenue bonds to pay for what would become the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. The New York State Bridge Authority has been selfsufficient throughout its more than seventy-five year history, operating without Federal or State tax monies and reinvesting toll revenues to continue to maintain and improve these vital Hudson River Crossings.

nationwide. Founded in 1864, they are proud to be one of the charter members of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. Marshall & Sterling provides a full range of commercial property & casualty insurance, personal home, auto, life and umbrella coverage, group health benefits, wealth management, financial planning, risk management and loss control services. Marshall & Sterling has direct and preferred relationships with the leading insurance carriers and financial service firms throughout the world, including Lloyds of London, providing their clients with a broad array of competitive choices.

Honoring outstanding individuals he Chamber recently announced the Hudson Valley’s top Forty Under 40 honorees, and the list is full of future leaders from our com munity. The Forty Under 40, Mover & Shaker Awards are presented annually to 40 top young profes sionals who have shown a strong commitment to the Hudson Valley. The selected honorees are indi viduals who go be yond their careers, working to enhance their local com munity and beyond. More than 100 nominations were submitted this year, and the list of talent ranges across a wide variety of industries. I am very impressed with the forte and dedication that these young

These individu als volunteer a consider able amount of time to score each nomination, and the awards are based solely on their consideration—not sponsorship, nor Chamber membership.

The awards ceremony is on April 4. It’s a great night full of celebration for these honorees and their accomplishments. I encourage you to attend, join ing the Chamber Board and fel low members in a salute to the future leaders of our business community. For more info and tickets, visit dcrcoc.org/40under40. f you are in a position that requires you to work in the field, you may have been given Chromebook a computer due to its flexibility and While features. Chromebooks do a fairly good job of keeping personal and sensitive data protected right out of the box with their multiple layers approach, there are some additional security measures you may want to consider before meeting your client at the local coffee shop. Sleep locking: Sure, it’s very convenient to have your Chromebook go to sleep when you close the lid, while everything stays as you left it the next time you open it. Turns out, the state of the computer in sleep-mode is vulnerable to security risks. Configuring your settings and making sure that a password is required when the Chromebook sleeps is a much

extension when trying to connect to a website, but unable to connect to the site, you can further config-

ure your Chromebook settings. In the same configurations you have the option to block all unencrypted sites, so you never have the temptation to visit a site that is not secure. Guest mode: If you find yourself in a situation with a client who needs to borrow your Chromebook, you may want to set your device to guest mode. This feature allows guests to have all the features of the Chromebook that they may need, without the administrative settings required to change your settings. Not only that, any information your guest user may generate from browsing history, cookies, bookmarks, or downloads will all be deleted when they exit guest mode. Your Chromebook will be secure, and you won’t be tripping over data you don’t want on your system the next time you log in. hank you to the Women’s Leadership Alliance for asking me to share a little bit about myself in advance of International Women’s Day. This year's theme is "Better the balance, better the world." This is such an unusual statement but I find it to be so true regarding my own life and experiences. I, Ruth Faircloth, was raised in the Hudson Valley by my migrant family. I became a farm Ruthfen Faircloth worker and a wife to Bishop Max Faircloth and a mother to five children. I'm also a proud grandmother of 13, a great grandma to two, as well as being a professional! When I look and wonder sometimes how my life touches other people, I think of my mother. I had a mother who was just a migrant woman but she had a big love for helping people. When I think of leaves falling from the tree, I think of myself and my mom. I have a love for children and I have a love for our community of women. I think that by growing up on the farm and in the rural area, I became connected with a organizational call that I had to answer. Through rural and migrant

Students access opportunity at college showcase By Nancy Herrera Career Action Center Mentor

ince 2014, the mission of the Career Action Center has always focused on providing youth with opportunities to explore various institutions of higher education. This year, in unison of the center’s mission, students participated in the 2019 National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Historically Black College Experience Showcase held on Staten Island. Since their inception, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) have promoted access to higher education for African-American students. Today, there are an estimated 101 HBCUs throughout the country

and 22 of them participated in this year’s showcase; notably Kentucky State University and Howard University. Ajunae Boston, a junior at Poughkeepsie High School, said, “I think it is really important to learn about HBCUs because it is part of

our history. We had the chance to talk to recruiters from all around the county.” Upon arrival, students received bags filled with information about the various schools in attendance. They were greeted by Staten Island NAACP members who were proud to share their 9th showcase. It was a day filled with knowledge and empowerment geared towards providing more opportunities for students. If interested, students were provided with interview attire including suits and ties. There were practice rooms in which organizers would conduct mock interviews with the students before they met with recruiters. Two workshops were held throughout the day: one helped students and parents navi-

Youth One Stop (YOS) is a comprehensive education and job-training program utilizing local resources to benefit at-risk youth in Dutchess County. The program is open to income-eligible youth, ages 14-24 who are facing obstacles inhibiting them from completing school, finishing their HSE or gaining employment. Youth One Stop is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board and The Chamber Foundation, Inc.

gate the complicated process of financial aid; the second addressed the benefits of joining a HBCU. Speakers highlighted the importance of feeling accepted and cared for at college. They explained the unique position of a HBCU’s ability to relate to their students, and in turn how students relate to their peers and professors. When exploring college options, the Career Action Center emphasizes to students the importance of finding a college that feels supportive. Experiences like the showcase help students at the Career Action Center discover the answers to important questions in a supportive environment. The HBCU trip was just one component of the center’s celebration of Black History Month. An-

attending Dutchess Community College for her nursing major. As a young mother, Jhaytem’s maturity and passion is quite apparent. She is a positive presence in our program and is always sharing that energy with the other participants. Jhaytem is committed to furthering her career. She

promises not to stop until she reaches her ultimate dream. As she works towards making her dream a reality, Jhaytem is appreciative of the Youth One Stop program. Youth One Stop is proud to say that this powerful woman is a success story for our program.

other component of the month’s classroom activities is a black history film directed by Career Action Center students in coordination with The Art Effect. The video presentation was presented by students at the Chamber’s February Contact Breakfast, and can be seen on the Chamber’s Facebook page. The initiative helped to empower the community, especially the youth, and served as a reminder to honor past and present leaders who have fought for the rights of many. s a Case Manager for the Workforce Connections program of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, my position requires a fair amount of community outreach. Typically I focus my outreach efforts on two specific groups: community agencies and members of the community. The goal is to connect with community agencies, becoming aware of their services and how we can support each other. Areas of support that we solicit for include, but are not limited to, housing, food, clothing, childcare, and driving lessons. This outreach is a two-way street. I educate our community partners on the mission of the Work-

force Connections Program. In turn, our partners make connections, supporting members of the community in a real way. Through this outreach, we create relationships and offer case management to income-eligible individuals who are responsible for at least one minor. Part of our initiative is the empowerment of our community; we teach soft skills, assist with resume writing, and conduct mock interviews with the intention of our participants gaining, and retaining employment. Workforce Connections participants come to us from the community. Every case we work with informs our outreach program. As much as we support each individual, each individual also supports our programming by spreading the word. Connecting people with the services they need is extremely rewarding for all involved.
