ontinuing an annual tradition at the May Contact Breakfast, The Chamber Foundation, Inc., the not-for-profit educational organization of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, will proudly award 31 scholarships to students planning to further their education in the Hudson Valley and beyond. This year, thanks to amazing community support at events like the Cosimo DiBrizzi Celebrity Servers Dinner, Twisted Gala, GolfA-Thon and more, the Foundation is able to present a record-setting amount of scholarship dollars, and will give over $53,000 in scholarship money to worthy recipients.

At the May Contact Breakfast on Wednesday, May 15 from 7:309 a.m. at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel and Conference Center, the

2013 scholarship winners will be officially presented their awards and ceremoniously introduced to attendees. These students represent some of the best and brightest in the region and are great names to know for the future. Chamber Foundation scholarships range from very broad to very specific in scope, some offered to students across disciplines, while others are precisely targeted for those pursuing a career in music, journalism, culinary arts, and more. According to the obituary in the Poughkeepsie Journal, Susan had a long career in advertising sales, leadership development and management. She cared deeply about helping businesses and nonprofit organizations succeed with their marketing and advertising efforts. She also worked with the developmentally disabled, helping them to achieve

personal and professional goals, develop their self-esteem and increase their independence. She was honored in the 1990s with the Dutchess County YWCA’s Salute to Women Award.

After living many years in Dutchess County, she moved to Waldoboro, Maine, and worked several years in advertising sales.

Armed Forces Day on the Hudson

ere in the Hudson Valley, we’re lucky to be a bastion of amazing educational opportunities.

Our public and private schools are first rate. Outside-theclassroom enrichment exists everywhere from the FDR Home and Museum to the Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries, and stellar colleges – Vassar, Marist, Dutchess Community College, The Culinary Institute of America, Bard, SUNY New Paltz and Mount Saint Mary’s – pull elite academics from all over the country to our area.

As President and CEO of not only the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce but also The Chamber Foundation, our non-profit educational organization, each May my team and I are exceptionally gratified to be able to award a wide variety of scholarships to deserving local students. I’d like to personally congratulate each scholarship recipient and make sure that they know just how proud we all are of what they’ve already accomplished and will accomplish in the future.

A 2012 Marist College graduate, Myriah has previously worked as an Associate Counselor at The Ivy Dean, a college admissions consulting company in Pleasant Valley. She also worked in the Marist College Admissions Department while a student at the Poughkeepsie college, and she spent time as a legislative aide in her home state of Texas.

In fact, a good MSP should have their systems set up to automatically diagnose and repair many computer issues before you even know they have occurred.

This will cut down on emergency problems. Automated alerts can get the attention of the MSP’s technical staff immediately.

Another advantage is the ability to solidly budget your IT services business expenses, as many MSPs offer programs at a flat rate to cover a set of machines, servers and networking equipment so there are no surprises at the end of the month. You also get tiered support and expertise so issues can be escalated as needed to technical staff that have a particular knowledge base or higher levels of expertise to handle any

t is a true statement to say that probably the two biggest fears that businesses have when they are approached by Managed Service Providers (MSPs), as it pertains to their business infrastructure and systems, is lack of control and lack of responsiveness.

Many businesses feel if they aren’t monitoring their systems and are allowing a third party to do it, they have somehow lost control of the day-to-day running of their business. Business owners also feel if they don’t have an in-house person who can respond to issues that are happening within the business infrastructure, the delay in contacting a third party could cost them valuable time and money.

Typically, these fears, though rational, can be handled by really evaluating the MSP properly.

A good MSP will explain their IT infrastructure and how they are capable of monitoring that of their clients’ that won’t interfere or slow down day-to-day operations. If you review this plan and you are finding holes or have concerns, this provider may not be the one for you.

The National Association of Letter Carriers and Dutchess Outreach are working together again this year to “Stamp Out Hunger” on Saturday, May 11 and they need your help. The Sports Museum of Dutchess County is hosting its second Annual Vehicle Racing program on June 9 at the Sports Museum on Wheeler Hill Road, Wappingers Falls.

The activities will start at 9 a.m. with a display of local stock cars, dragsters, open cockpit sprint cars, go carts and other

racing vehicles along with their owners and drivers. At 11:30 the Museum will be holding it first Racing Hall of Fame induction.

n Saturday, May 4, Walkway Over the Hudson will once again look to set a new Guinness World Record.

Last year, people from all over the Hudson Valley got their names in the history books as they came together on the Walkway to do the Hokey Pokey, marking the world’s largest such gathering. This second world record attempt will bring together friends, families, and communities to create the worlds longest chorus line where thousands of people will be singing and dancing in celebration of I Love My Park Day. Participation tickets are on sale now at w a l k w a y. o r g for $15. All entrants will receive a confirmation e-mail that will serve as their admission.

Space is limited, only 3,000 spots are available. Don’t delay, sign

IT Committee presents two seminars about using technology

T

he Information Technology Committee of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is holding two free seminars to help you learn more about technology that could greatly improve your business.

On Tuesday, May 7, the IT Committee will present a seminar entitled, “Information and Mobile Device Security,” from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at IBM in Poughkeepsie. It will include a panel discussion following the presentation where experts will answer questions

from participants.

This seminar will help to protect your business. With the increased use of technology in business, there’s also a much higher rate in cyber attacks, phishing, Internet scams, viruses, malware attacks, etc.

In one month, a small business with 5-10 computers can be the subject of 200,000 intrusion attempts, 80,000 virus attacks and 2,000 malware attacks. The IT Committee will

discuss how to set up a secure environment that can keep your business safe.

A week later, on Tuesday, May 14, the committee will hold a second presentation called “Web & Video 101.” It will also be held from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at IBM in Poughkeepsie and will include a panel discussion.

This seminar will focus on web and video, specifically teaching beginners in the field some of

the most effective uses of Internet Marketing. Some topics will include Search Engine Optimization (SEO), e-mail marketing and pay-per-click (PPC). Attendees will also learn how to best build a business website and about web video concepts such as compression, formats, codecs, frame rate, bit rate and resolution.

“As a member of Leadership Dutchess we recently participated in a session entitled ‘Communications.’

As part of the session we were each given a question. Mine was, “If you could be an animal what would it be and why”. We had 30 seconds to prepare an answer and we then had to deliver it out loud…standing up…. in front of everyone! This exercise

forced me to explore my biggest fear, public speaking. I was so scared, that I thought I might have to leave class for the rest of the day. However, I faced my fear head on. Through this exercise, I found that we all have the capability to develop a skill. We just need the experience and tools to do so. Leadership Dutchess is designed to enhance your current talents and develop new ones.”
