Local high school students take center stage as The Chamber Foundation, the not-for-profit educational organization of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, proudly presents over $65,000 in scholarships to those looking to further their education in the Hudson Valley and beyond.

The total amount awarded will shatter last year’s record of over $53,000.

’m sure that you’ve by now heard rumblings of revitalization in Poughkeepsie. Whether it’s down on the banks of the Hudson River, in the historic business district encompassing Main, Market and Academy streets, or further west in the Middle Main neighborhood, people are organizing, making plans and fighting for change.

As an owner of a City of Poughkeepsie building and business owner myself, this issue is especially important and even personal to me. I believe, like so many others, that Poughkeepsie has great potential. I know that if we work together we can solve

he Dutchess County Historical Society is celebrating its 100th birthday in 2014, and the Chamber is helping celebrate by presenting a special breakfast on Wednesday, June 11 at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel and Conference Center. The event will begin at 7:30 a.m.

This is one of several events marking the Historical Society’s centennial, and it will recognize Dutchess County businesses that have served our community for a century or more. Generational businesses will also be recognized.

he Chamber has recently updated many of the most popular sections of our website to create a better user experience for you, our members!

First, you’ll notice a completely reimagined online business directory featuring a modern and responsive search function. Gone are the days of needing to know a business’ exact name to be able to find them on our website. Now search is responsive and the layout of the results make it much easier to navigate and find the information you want. We’ve also condensed our categories and made them easier to search, and will soon be rolling out all of this information to your mobile devices through our new app.

These changes have significantly enhanced member listings. Now you can add links to your social networks, upload logos, photos and videos, craft a welcome message about your business and even have potential customers contact you directly through the Chamber. And you can do it all yourself by visiting our members only area and logging in. If you haven’t logged in yet, call us

at 845-454-1700 ext. 1000 and we’ll get you online in no time.

The second major change is to our events calendar. We’ve simplified both the way events are presented on our website and also how you register for them. You no longer need to know random combinations of numbers to log in and RSVP, now you can do it all by entering some very basic information about yourself and your business.

And once you register for your first event, our new system will save your details so you don’t need to enter them every time!

Is the cloud for you?

T

here is information you may see about moving various parts of your business infrastructure to “the cloud” and maybe you are at the point you are ready to dive in, but how do you choose a service provider that is right for you? Once you have a handle on the services you are looking for, here are some key questions to help you make the right decision: 1.

What is your pricing structure? Be wary of large upfront costs, as that’s a sign of a possible scam. You should see some sort of pay-as-you go plan with the ability to add services as you need them if the service provider is reputable. Pricing can vary significantly from $1-$100 per month per user and up depending on the needs of the company.

2.

How secure is your cloud? Next to pricing, security is the next biggest concern when it comes to putting your customers’ sensitive information in the cloud. What business owners

should be looking for are things like firewalls, antivirus detection, multifactor user authentication and data encryption, and routine security audits.

Make sure you’re also asking who within the service provider’s organization will have access to your data and if they do their own employee background checks to eliminate potential thieves. Depending on your industry, you may also want to ask questions about compliance with government legislation.

What’s the downtime 3. history? You never want to be unable to access your data via the Internet, however, even the best providers experience occasional downtime. Some vendors post their history in logs that you can review online, but if that’s not available, make sure you ask about their track record.

What if my data gets 4. lost? At the end of the day, there are still humans in the mix and accidental deletions or the pos-

sible loss of data could happen.

Be sure you know what steps they have in place to address data loss in any agreements they provide, and if compensation to you is also included.

Once you have a handle on how the service provider is prepared to meet all of your needs and you have a good sense of the level of security they have to offer, you’ll be in a better position to cut costs and streamline your workflows by taking advantage of what the cloud has to offer.

MEMBER NEwSlINE The Ulster Savings Charitable Foundation recently awarded a $10,000 grant to Literacy Connections of the Hudson Valley, Inc. in support of their “Education Technology Project”.

Literacy Connections, located in Poughkeepsie, serves adults who are functioning at the lowest literacy levels and help them acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for self-sufficiency and employment.

In an effort to prevent adult illiteracy, Literacy Connections also works with local school districts and government agencies to work with young children who experience difficulty with reading. Over the past two (2) years, they have served over 600 adult students and 140 children “We’re happy to support the Education Technology Project as it will provide both tutors and students with the equipment and resources necessary to successfully continue Literacy’s outreach efforts throughout Dutchess County,” said MaryRose Warcholak, Executive Director of the Ulster Savings Charitable Foundation.

As part of Subaru’s Share the Love event, Mid-Hudson Subaru collected $30,000 for Grace Smith House. Mid Hudson Subaru has the honor of being recognized as collecting the largest donation for any one charity in the country.

“The partnership between Mid-Hudson Subaru and Grace Smith House has been beneficial to both businesses.” said Peter Maher, owner Mid Hudson Subaru.

“Together we were able to raise awareness within the community,

both for the charity and for signs of high risk relationships. We are incredibly proud to say that 99% of our eligible customers chose Grace Smith House as the Share the Love recipient.”

Grace Smith House will use a portion of the donation to continue to operate their Prevention Program for teens and young adults in Dutchess County schools. The goal is to run the program in every school in every district. Another portion will be used to keep the Youth Education Coordinators program operating at 100%.

Now in its fourth season, Beacon Flea Market is established in specializing in quality vintage, antique, collectible and hand crafted items. More than 50 regular and one-time vendors sell a variety of items, including refinished furniture, antiques, vintage purses, mid-century cookware, collectible vinyl, old books, handmade jewelry, and local crafts. Residents who wish to sell house clean out, gently used home and garden items, and boxes from grandma’s attic are also welcome.

Vendors are invited to submit photos of their items to the website, which is updated weekly to offer customers a sneak peek of the offerings for the upcoming Sunday.

Beacon Flea Market provides free booth space for Beacon schools.

Non-profits, such as animal shelters, and Beacon residents who wish to sell clean-out items can vend at a discounted rate. In support of the local community the market does not sell food or new items, and visitors are encouraged to check out the local cafés, restaurants, and shops.

In our YES program, we celebrate when a high school student increases their school attendance and begins to get passing grades in all of their classes. One of our students told me, “I was failing four of my six classes, but am passing all of my classes now. The extra tutoring and my mentor in the YES program helped.”

In our Responsible Parent Initiative program, we stop and commend a parent who took the first step to attend mental health counselling or maybe worked hard to comply with both the RPI program and the Department of Community and Family Services. I was told by one parent, “It wasn’t easy to admit that I had a problem but I am glad that I did. By getting help for myself, I have helped my children.”

In our new Dutchess Youth Dutchess County One Stop program our young people set their own goals. They include increas- Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce ing their literacy and numeracy skills, attaining the National Work Readiness credential, graduating high school or earning their high school equivalency, earning a vocational certificate, enrolling and

attending college, and gaining employment. I don’t think 10 years from now that they will necessarily remember all of these things but what they will remember are the celebrations.

Last month, County Executive Marcus Molinaro and City of Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik took time to meet and have lunch with our young people and tell them about their personal journeys. The youth learned about civic responsibility and voting but there was much more that they learned. They learned that they are important members of the c om mu n it y.

This is a victory.

he Women’s Leadership Alliance of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce is bringing key representatives from women-focused organizations in the Hudson Valley together to share ideas, grow our networks, promote our causes and create change.

Foundation grows its programs thanks to committees, supporters

ridges to Community is again offering a “Bridges to Community Annual Scholarship” and Chamber members are encouraged to apply.

Bridges to Community is an international non-profit organization based in New York working to help meet basic human needs in impoverished communities in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. Bridges pursues these goals by engaging groups of volunteers from the United States and Canada to assist materially poor communities. For more information, visit bridgestocommunity.org.

Volunteers serve for a period of one week living and working

MEMBER SPOTlIgHT in the rural community being served. The available scholarship provides full payment of the fee of $1,295 for the trip. All meals, in-country travel, and lodging are included; however the scholarship does not include airfare (estimated to be around $600 from

a New York airport). Trips are safe and secure with all lodging, food, and arrangements made by Bridges staff members, who accompany volunteers throughout the experience. Volunteers need no experience in construction or heavy construction tasks.

Look at the world upside down

Jill Bolte Taylor, neuroanatomist and author of My Stroke of Insight, suggests hanging a familiar item upside down. It makes the brain work differently to get the information it is looking for.

Turn on your ears

Paula Oleska, founder of Natural Intelligence Systems, uses this exercise to help people stimulate the left hemisphere of the brain. Ears are very important sensory organs, but they “switch off ” with excessive noise, diminishing the amount of information being received. We can even experience temporary hearing loss or confusion from too much noise.

This exercise turns the ears back on, improving clarity of hearing and overall alertness.

Firmly take hold of the tops of your ears and unroll the crease, pulling toward the back of your head. Repeat this movement, go-

Oleska also suggests the cross crawl exercise to increase energy and stimulate memory and recall.

By crossing the midline of the body, you activate the connections between the right and left hemispheres of the brain.

While standing, lift your left knee and touch it with your right hand. Then change to the right knee and left hand. Repeat for one to three minutes.
