e’ve all been using Microsoft Office programs to create documents since…well, what must seem like forever. However for those who have made the switch to using Microsoft Office 365 and the available apps, there is an update that has been made recently that seems to have a lovehate relationship with users. Most users are used to being able to open a document in programs like Word, Excel or PowerPoint and making some change to it and then saving it as a different file name so you have your original and then your modified copy. Recently Microsoft pushed out a change to Office 365 that means you can no longer work this way

without any notice to users. Any changes you make to a document are automatically saved so your original document is overwritten whether you wanted it that way or not. Another important thing to note is that not only has the document you are working been saved already; you won’t see a “Save As” option any longer. You can turn off the new AutoSave feature by clicking the toggle in the upper left corner of the screen you are on, but that only turns off this feature for the current document. There is no way to globally disable the feature. You have the option to turn off the AutoRecover feature; this is the feature that automatically creates a backup at regular intervals. This will disable AutoSave, but also leaves you without any sort of backup.

Astor Services for Children & Families provides behavioral and educational services for children and their families in the Hudson Valley and Bronx was among the dozens of providers that shared concerns related to New York’s vulnerable children and families, social service providers, and program funding needs during recent Lobby Day events in Albany. Throughout January’s Council of Family and Child Caring Agencies’ Advocacy Day, government officials met with various agencies, including a Bronx Delegation consisting of nine government representatives that convened with agency representatives. “The focus of our meetings was to bring to light the need of not only supports for the children and families we serve, but also the for supports for our various social service staffs that often go without adequate pay and supports all the while providing crucial and life changing services to the city and state’s most vulnerable populations dealing with a plethora of traumas,” said participant Jeannine Mendez of Director: Development, Public and Government Relations for The Children’s Foundation of Astor. A second Lobby Day in February concentrated on the need for immediate action from the legislature to bypass a proposed two-year waiting period to fund currently needed mental health and other Medicaid-mandated services. “We focused on bringing to light how vital continuous care is in the treatment of trauma and behavioral and mental health deficiencies,” Mendez said. Feldman Physical Therapy and Performance, a total body treatment, injury prevention and functional movement practice in LaGrange and Fishkill, announces the launch of Hudson Valley’s first Elite Running Team. Elite Running Team members will be selected through an application process. Cosimo’s event serves up support for Chamber Foundation

he Chamber Foundation held the 13th Annual Cosimo DiBrizzi Celebrity Servers Dinner on April 12, at Cosimo’s Brick Oven in Poughkeepsie. The dinner benefited the Cosimo DiBrizzi Culinary Arts Scholarship as well as the general Chamber Foundation Scholarship Program. Fourteen individuals traded in their business attire for an apron and served their guests while competing to raise the most in tips. Guests enjoyed a three course, wine-paired dinner and by the end of the evening, the event raised significant funds for our local students. un violence is often a touchy subject to speak about, especially after all the recent tragedies happening throughout our country. Fear is a constant factor in the daily lives of American students who have to attend their classes with a sense of uneasiness for their future and for their own safety. As a 16 year old student at the Poughkeepsie High School, I feel like gun violence is more than just a political debate about whether or not the government needs to be stricter on gun laws. People often forget to consider what the actual affected group feels like on the

matter, and why is that? It’s scary to be unsure of your own future, to be unsure if whether or not this lockdown is a drill or something serious. It’s downright nerve wracking and absolutely terrifying to even think about. Dire changes need to be made sooner than later; the safety of America’s youth is depending on it. I think a major change that needs to be considered is the meth-

od of kids getting into the school. At Poughkeepsie High, there’s only one main entrance that students are allowed to get in through. Two metal detectors are also put in place, which every student must enter though in order to get into the building, as well as security guards that go through book bags. It’s a slow and sometimes annoying process, but it helps to ensure our safety despite that.

Workshop helps with work-life balance

ecoming successful in attaining a work-life balance means something different to every individual. For some people, reaching this somewhat elusive goal of a stable work-life balance can be challenging. Knowing that many of their participants have extra barriers to overcome, the Case Managers

Youth One Stop is a comprehensive education and job-training program utilizing local resources to benefit at-risk youth in Dutchess County. The program is open to income-eligible youth, ages 14-24 who are facing obstacles inhibiting them from completing school, finishing their HSE or gaining employment. Youth One Stop is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board and The Chamber Foundation, Inc.

The Workforce Connections Program comprises both education/ training services and staffing resources. These organizations are often multi-faceted and offer several programs that help with both existing and future employees. The Workforce Connections Program is made possible thanks to a partnership with the Dutchess County Department of Community and Family Services and the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

of the Workforce Connection Program work diligently to help determine and conquer all obstacles. The Workforce Connections Program assists income-eligible individuals who have at least one minor child, in securing and retaining employment through one-on-one case management. This program offers a wide range of soft-skills training workshops and family-oriented activities to assist and empower individuals to reach their full potential. It is through these workshops, called “Talk Time” that we talk about the im-

portance of self-care, as well as how to recognize and deal with stress and other important employment-related capabilities. All of the individuals in the Workforce Connections Program work incredibly hard and for that reason, it is important to have some fun! Our “Thursday Evening Activities” or “TEA” focuses on family activities. Every Thursday evening, we offer our participants and their children arts and crafts, potluck dinners, or invite community speakers to share information and provide them with additional resources. This is a time to share ideas, learn from each other, and just gain or give support. In these ways, we attempt to inspire some sense of a work-life balance.

he Youth One Stop program year spans July 1 to June 30, with the close of Program Year 2017 (PY17) quickly approaching. Youth One Stop staff and participants have much to be proud of: • 50 out of school youth were enrolled as active participants. These are individuals who may have dropped out of high school and need to complete their education, or high school graduates who face a myriad of barriers before putting their hard-earned diploma to work for them. • 10 in school youth were enrolled as active participants. Ranging from college students in need of support to continue their college career, or high school students searching for guidance in crafting a plan for when they graduate. These students must also be low income and facing an additional barrier to their success. • 11 youth have completed, or are currently participating in a Work Experience Opportunity. These opportunities include Job Shadow Days, 75 hour internships, or 300 hour Transitional Jobs at various local businesses generously providing a real world encounter with the work place. Each youth is paid by Youth One Stop and meets face to face at

least one a week with their case manager to discuss professional skills they’d like to master. • 12 youth participants in need of a high school equivalency diploma enrolled in Dutchess County Community College’s Class offered on-site Monday thru Thursday. • 20 youth enrolled in an occupational skills training program. Youth One Stop is able to contribute a maximum of $5,000 towards a technical class via the Individual Training Account (ITA). Classes eligible for this grant must prepare students for an industry recognized and portable occupational skills certificate or license. Youth enrolled in a variety of courses including Certified Nursing Assistant training, Pharmacy Technician training, Emergency Medical Technician training, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Installation training, and Dental Assistant training. Besides these accomplishments Youth One Stop also had two potluck events, inviting participants to prepare and share a favorite dish; made apple pies and decorated Easter cookies with the Maple Ridge Burderhoff Community in the Poughkeepsie Underwear Factory Open Kitchen, and met with City of Poughkeepsie’s Mayor Rob Rollison. What a year it’s been!
