s we enter into the season of giving, what better time to pay homage to National Philanthropy Month, a time to celebrate the commitment of individuals, companies and foundations who reflect the spirit of philanthropic generosity, dedication and leadership in our communities.

Philanthropy is so inspiring to me, as no one is required to give of themselves. There are no requirements that we must volunteer or get involved. People are driven by various reasons to volunteer, but whatever the reason, it is the greater community that benefits as a whole.

We are fortunate that our Chamber is able to provide numerous benefits to its members.

staff, but by the philanthropic spirit of all of the members that provide support. Many members show their support by volunteering on Chamber committees, of which the Chamber currently has over 20. These dedicated groups of volunteers provide a multitude of benefits to all of our members.

The Chamber alone cannot serve all the needs of a varied business community like the one here in the Hudson Valley - they need you to assist, so please consider taking on a leadership

role or becoming a more active volunteer. And when you do take on that role, know that the Chamber, our members and our community are depending on you to dedicate yourself and use your leadership abilities to fulfill the expectations of that role. Yes, it is a commitment, but one that I know so many within our talented community are up for, and one that will produce great results.

As we gather with our family and friends to give thanks over the Thanksgiving holiday, we should also be giving thanks to those members and leaders of our community that so freely give their time and talents. It is because of the dedication of so many volunteers that our area an exquisite place to work and live.

As charter members of what is now the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce, Zimmer Brothers began with a small jewelry store on Garden Street.

Their extensive store is now located on Raymond Avenue in the Arlington Business District. Other services there include excellent repair service, jewelry buying and appraisals.

ecently I was struck by a piece of artwork in our community. No, I wasn’t touring the galleries at Vassar College; rather I was presented with a high school project created

by Marlasia Ashley, a student in the City of Poughkeepsie and a participant in the Youth Employment Services (YES) program run through the Chamber’s Workforce Development Center. This picture found its way to me because Marlasia painted a bowl of fruit with a simple phrase – Eat Local – across the top. Not only was the artwork beautiful, but also with a message that fits perfectly into what we as a Chamber represent, and I knew we had to share Marlasia’s work with the community.

The artist was joined by her sister and art teacher, as well as Dr. Nicole Williams, the Superintendent of the City of Poughkeepsie School District at our October Contact Breakfast, where she was introduced to the crowd and presented with

a framed copy of her artwork.

In the coming weeks, as you venture out to restaurants across the Hudson Valley, look for her message in the window of our great local restaurants.

And remember to Think Local First when dining out this autumn.

YES was started in 2006 to assist older youth with academic and employment support opportunities and other supportive services. The goal of the YES Program is to provide eligible youth with the tools, skills, and confidence necessary to succeed personally and professionally in the community. Ellen L. Baker graduated magna cum laude from Union College in 1979 and cum laude from Albany Law School of Union University in 1982. Following graduation from law school, she began work at McCabe & Mack. She became the first female partner of the firm in 1988, blazing a trail for two other women who have BAkEr followed in her footsteps. Today, Ellen is the senior attorney in the firm’s estates and trusts department.

Ellen is a member and a former president of the Mid-Hudson Women’s Bar Association, as well as a past delegate to the Women’s Bar Association of the State of the New York.

In 2002, Ellen received a Salute to Women award from the Dutchess County YMCA. The Anderson Center for Autism and Anderson Center Services awarded her a lifetime honorary membership in 2009.

Ellen and Jim consider their three children to be their greatest achievement. Laura is an elementary school librarian in the White Plains City School District.

Rachel, a recent college graduate, spent the last year studying Chinese in Beijing. Adam is a chemical engineering student at Northwestern University.

by bringing her leadership skills and dynamic energy to the notfor-profit sector. Since 1999, Natalie has been shaping an organizational culture that truly reflects a sense that “we are all in this together.”

As CFO, Natalie consistently seeks out opportunities to talk to the women who are working in the fields of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, mental health and other fields of human service and develops strategies and fiscal plans to support their difficult work.

Natalie is a summa cum laude graduate of SUNY Albany with a degree in Business Administration. Linda Campbell has worked for Dutchess ARC since 1978, currently serving as they Director of Marketing and Employment. As a leader, Linda has truly inspired staff and the individuals they serve findby campBell ing people’s strength and mentoring them to reach their full potential. There have been countless examples where Linda has assisted other women (and men) with regards to their personal and professional development and many of these individuals are now key members of Dutchess ARC’s Marketing and Development Team. In 2004, Linda was the recipient of Dutchess ARC’s Mimi Stambrook Award that recognized

that her work in the field goes far beyond the scope of her position.

Linda has also been active with Camphill Village, a community of people, some with special needs, who live and work together caring for both each other and the earth. Over the years, Linda has also volunteered her time to the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure, AIDS Walk and Planned Parenthood’s Peer Education Program. She is an active member of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Women’s Leadership Alliance.

Lisa Marie Cathie is President, CEO and Trustee of Ulster Savings Bank. Prior to joining USB, Lisa was Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Orange County Trust Company. She directed the overall operations of the organicathie zation and helped the bank achieve substantial growth by nearly doubling its assets.

Steven Chickery is the President of the family-owned Hudson Valley Office Furniture, Inc. with showrooms in both Poughkeepsie and Newburgh.

He is particularly committed to downtown Poughkeepsie, an area that has undergone economic hardships throughout the years. chicKeRY He has been a loud voice in attracting individuals and businesses to the area in an effort to revive Main Street, and he has a unique and critical understanding of the intersection between economic development and quality of life.

Being in the office furniture industry has afforded Steven many opportunities to network with business, political and community leaders over the years and these relationships have helped build a strong desire to support the non-profit groups that serve the less fortunate in our area. Steven co-chaired the Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum Golf Tournament for many years, helping it become a very prestigious event and the single largest fundraiser for the organization. Currently, Steven is the vice president of the Bardavon 1869 Opera House board of directors.

Six years ago, Steven started to partner with the Grace Smith House, a Poughkeepsie based domestic violence shelter, and his desire to help victims and their families has driven him to become the current board chair.

Mid-Hudson Subaru Peter Maher was born and raised in the Hudson Valley where his father instilled in him a strong belief in community, hard work famand ily. Those beliefs have shaped Pelife ter’s and career, maheR as well as formed the foundation of Mid-Hudson Subaru, the car dealership he owns.

Peter is a strong advocate for women in an industry that is typically largely male. Peter allows for flex-hours and job sharing, granting moms the freedom to work and still be home for their children. Peter fully supports his staff in giving back to the community, giving them time off to participate with such organizations as Abilities First, International Women’s Day and Dining Out For Life.

Peter also hosts numerous events at the dealership including Drive Out Breast Cancer and the Annual Coat/Food Drive.

Peter is a big advocate of giving all employees the ability to reach their potential. He has supported and financially backed female employees attending training classes, workshops and business programs, including supporting his Director of Media and Public Relations with her participation in Leadership Dutchess.

The community has in turn shown its appreciation in the numerous awards and recognition Peter has received, among them the Chamber’s Headliner Award, Stellar Care Award, and Juvenile Diabetes Research for a Cure Award.

Foundation for Community Health Gertrude O’Sullivan has worked in the fields of public relations, publicity, general business administration and film and video production for all of her professional life.

After moving to Connecticut in 1979, she decided to bring this experience to the non-profit world.

As a video producer, Gertrude is a Northeast Regional Emmy nominee and a recipient of a Telly and an Aurora Award for the film “Exposed: The Continuing Story of AIDS.” She also takes pride in the fact that three of her needs assessment projects focusing on seniors

resulted in the establishment of a senior center in one community and a community center o’SulliVan in another.

Since joining the Foundation for Community Health as the Director of Communications and Special Programming, Gertrude has focused much of her time and energy on rural eastern Dutchess.

One of her signature accomplishments was to initiate and lead an Eastern Dutchess Transportation Task Force which has resulted in a regional Dial-A-Ride program shared by six towns and that now offers transportation to Sharon Hospital and other healthcare services. An active member of the Eastern Dutchess Rural Health Network, Gertrude has identified and taken action on a number of issues. She promoted the program and assisted Webutuck School District in applying for the Summer Food Program that provides free meals to children in the greater Millerton/Amenia area.

KellyOutwater Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union

Kelly Outwater is the Product Marketing Manager at Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union. She has worked at HVFCU since 1999, giving her over 18 years of financial services experience. Kelly was instrumental in helping the credit union launch its commercial and insurance divisions.

A lifelong resident of the Hudson Valley, Kelly is deeply vested in the community. Family Services is particularly close to her heart, and she has served in numerous leadership roles there. She is a member of their Development and Family of the Year Committees, and previously chaired their Marketing and Public Relations Committee. She also helped lead the organization’s successful rebranding to outWateR

better convey the depth of their services to the community.

Kelly has been a fierce advocate for her son, Dylan, who was born with some complex neurological issues. Kelly and her husband Scott were proactive and relentless in ensuring that Dylan received an accurate diagnosis and access to all services necessary for him to continue on his own path to excellence. Dylan is thriving in his mainstream classroom, and was recently selected as a scholarship recipient for a science, technology, engineering and math summer camp.

Kelly is a previous recipient of the ATHENA Adult Scholarship.

AngellineSmalls An’tyrice Salon & Spa

Angelline Smalls is a wife, mother, model, producer, entrepreneur, philanthropist and a force to be reckoned with. She has been a social entrepreneur and an expert in cosmetology, innovative hair design, beauty and fashion for the past 14 years.

In 2009, Angelline opened An’Tyrice Salon and Spa, which became the first full service salon and spa owned and operated by an African American woman in the City of Poughkeepsie. With her second location open in Wappingers Falls, she now manages two high-end salons. In 2013, Angelline launched an online boutique availing women around the world the opportunity purchase high quality, custom-made hairpieces, wigs and hair extensions. Angelline used this venture to develop local and national partnerships with organizations including the American Cancer Society, Specialty Fittings, and Grace Smith House to offer customized services SmallS and products that help promote female empowerment and encourage women to overcome life’s circumstances by loving themselves first and eliminating all negative aspects of their lives, starting over, and realizing their own strength and beauty.

Angelline believes in paying it forward. She established an apprenticeship program that offers hairdressers practical tools to help them achieve their goals by supporting and mentoring them for success in the world of cosmetology and hair.

SueSywetzSullivan St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital

Since 2001, Sue Sywetz Sullivan has served as Vice President, Advancement and Government Affairs, bringing more than 20 years of leadership experience to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH). Sue leads four key areas in the hospital: government affairs, marketing and communications, philanthropy and community engagement.

Under her direction, the St. Luke’s Cornwall Health System Foundation has raised more than $85 million in support of the capital and programmatic needs of the hospital and SLCH has undergone a complete rebranding and estabSulliVan lished itself as a community leader. Sue also serves as the hospital’s principal spokesperson both locally and nationally.

Sue also serves as the Executive Director of The Greater Newburgh Partnership (GNP), a newly formed 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to renewing the city of Newburgh. Under her leadership, significant milestones have been accomplished including seven cleaning and greening efforts, the development and successful submission of the Land Bank application (Newburgh is the only city in New York to receive this designation) and cooperative agreements with the city of Newburgh.

Tom Wade mentored Sue in her fundraising career, working with key local non-profit organizations including Newburgh YMCA, Grace Smith House, Tuxedo Park Library and the Kingston Hospital Foundation.

internship hosts needed High school students visit local colleges for Youth leadership

T

he Youth Leadership Program is proud to offer our track two students the opportunity to intern in an industry that aligns with their future career goals. This internship program helps the students determine if their current career aspirations are the right choice for them. In partnership with College Planning 101, The Chamber Foundation is hard at work starting the process of placing these students and is looking for internship hosts.

The internship experience should be a mutually beneficial relationship and learning experience both intern and internship host. Each mentor/mentee relationship is unique and will develop independently.

Youth Leadership intern hosts will: • Share career specific expertise including education required and personal experiences • Give plenty of hands on experience and structure student

Students from Beacon and John Jay High Schools toured the Culinary Institute of America and Dutchess Community College during the recent College Campus Tours. The Chamber Foundation hosts this unique opportunity twice a year.

Leadership participants learn, play Members of The Chamber Foundation’s Leadership Dutchess and Youth Leadership programs have been busy learning this fall … and having a little fun. Both groups recently spent a day at Sharpe Reservation in Fishkill where they participated in workshops, interactive group sessions and worked together on the ropes courses. Teamwork is important for these groups, and a day of bonding at Sharpe goes a long way toward their overall success.
