mong many things, the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce acts as a tremendous resource for businesses, civic organizations and the community. Perhaps one of the most powerful tools we have at the Chamber is our website, and you can expect a great new look and many additional features for 2013. One such feature, already live now, is the community events calendar. Linking all facets of the Hudson Valley in one location and serving many purposes, the calendar is one of the largest listings of what’s happening in the Hudson River Valley.
It isn’t unusual to receive an invitation for an event – fundraiser, breakfast, luncheon, gala affair, festival, fashion show, ribboncutting – and then realize there are three organizations promoting their soiree on the same Saturday evening! It is a deciMESSAGE FROM difficult sion to choose THE CHAIR: between two or three great Frank organizations, so Castella, Jr. we hope to avoid this by asking event planners to visit our calendar prior to setting a date. If you’re involved with a notfor-profit organization or have a business within our community, we encourage you to take advantage
of this resource by posting your events on our community calendar. Not only will this help you with promotion of the function, but also it acts as a centerpiece for planning a new or annual event. If you check our calendar prior to settling on a date, even if it is a year out, this will ensure there isn’t overlap with other affairs on the same day or even weekend. We hope planning around one community calendar will boost your attendance and increase visibility for your organization. It is very simple to find our community calendar. Just visit dcrcoc.org, click on “Events,” then “Community Calendar,” and to add an event simply click on the link reading “Add New Event.” Also, keep an eye out for our new website launch in January of 2013.
Adopt a Family for holiday season Dear Santa, My teacher told us to write a letter to Santa. I never wrote a letter to Santa before so I am not sure what I should say, but I am going to give it a try. Thank you for the awesome Christmas last year! I wasn’t sure when I woke up on Christmas morning if you would come and leave presents while we were asleep. I think you missed us the year before because we moved into a different apartment and Mommy said that you probably couldn’t find us. But you found us last year and we had a great Christmas! We all got new warm pajamas, underwear and lots of socks! My

brother got winter boots and my little sister got a new snowsuit. How did you know they needed them? Well anyway, thank you! Mom got some new perfume and it smelled nice. We also got new dishes and some big towels for the bathroom. The towels are very soft. It is nice to have my own towel to use when I get out of the tub. Dad was happy to get pants for his new job. Some nice lady at the Chamber of Commerce helped him find the job. They helped Mommy too so now they are both working! Things at home are getting better. We also got some new toys and I loved the new outfit that I got for school. I am still having fun playing
with the new games that I got too. It was a Christmas that I will never forget! The Workforce Development Program at the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce has an Adopt a Family Program. Area businesses, agencies, clubs, families or individuals can provide Christmas to a local family that would not be able to afford to do so on their own. Family’s that are selected are working with a mentor and are either newly employed, actively seeking employment or in a training program. Call Louise to see how you can help (845) 454-1700 ext. 1024.

cial data or account passwords to use for their own personal gain. In addition, attacks were related to at least six modem manufacturers, including several of the most popular worldwide brands. In some cases, hackers not only took advantage of the less secure modems by accessing the administration panel and capturing the password, but also were able to find the vulnerable spots in Java code so they could silently install banking software for fraud purposes. In other cases, users were told they could install a plug-in to take advantage of additional site features that were
then used maliciously. What makes this type of attack so widespread and frightening is that it specifically targets a device that few of us spend time securing. So what can you do to protect yourself or your business from such an attack? First, make sure your modem is at the latest/highest level of firmware so you have the latest security updates installed. You should also make sure that you have reset your modem from the default user ID and password provided by the manufacturer, but that really goes for any device that you bring into your home/office and attach to your network. hen we think about network security and being secure when making internet transactions, it is less likely that we think of our own DSL modem as a weak point. However, recently it was reported out of Brazil that thousands of people were the victims of the exploitation of the DSL modem’s vulnerability. Have you ever thought about whether or not your DSL modem has the latest software upgrades to protect your network from hackers? Probably not, as this is not a typical thing that comes to mind. But this could be a valuable component to keeping your identity safe. The users affected in Brazil were unknowingly visiting imposter websites that looked like Google and a variety of other well-known and considered secure sites. Meanwhile hackers were obtaining finan-

ou know what I saw the other day? Christmas decorations. Like it does every year, the holiday season has snuck up on me – and I bet I’m not alone. As much as I can’t believe it’s not summer anymore, I’m excited to make new memories with my family and friends in the weeks ahead. However you’re planning to celebrate this holiday season, whatever your rituals and traditions may be, when you have the occasion to give a loved one a gift this year please Think Local First. No matter who’s on your list, I know you can find something unique and creative for them right here in the Hudson River Valley – even if you’re shopping online! To me, one of the best parts about living here is that we look out for each other. I hope you’ll keep that in mind when you’re out hunting for gifts or having a family night out, because buying local is the definition of camaraderie. You get a topquality product or service. You keep money earned by Dutchess County citizens here in Dutchess County. You help a fellow member of the community by frequenting their place of business. You help keep people employed. Thinking Local First is a
wonderful thing for everyone. I also know that a lot of people make charitable contributions at this time of the year. There’s no question that there are good causes throughout the country, but I hope you’ll consider supporting some of the great organizations doing important things right here in our community. Did you know that the Hudson Valley has local not-for-profits dedicated to everything from preventing breast cancer and child abuse to helping people find food and affordable housing? There are a lot of people out there doing wonderful things in our region, and I hope you’ll see fit to support them. I hope the holiday season finds you and your family happy and healthy. When you see me around town, make sure to tell me how you’ve been Thinking Local First this year! And as always, if you need help finding a great local business or not-forprofit to support, the member search at dcrcoc.org is a great place to start. Sincerely,
Charles S. North President & CEO
