lot of people have asked us what we’re doing to commemorate Charlie North’s retirement and honor his many years of service to the local business community. We’re happy to announce that on Thursday, December 4, from 5-8:30 p.m. at The Grandview, we’re hosting Charlie North’s official retirement party with all proceeds benefitting The Chamber Foundation. The reception will feature a Dixieland band led by Charlie’s son Joe as well as heavy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Chamber members are encouraged to RSVP for $30, and all others are welcome for $40. Reserve your place by visiting ChamberFDN.org. All who attend will not only be saluting a real local legend, but are also helping send Hudson Valley kids to college. Last year, The Foundation awarded over $65,000 to deserving students.

ovember brings with it the definitive end of summer, the eating of the bird, and the urgency to get ready for the inevitable arrival of snow. While snow will make some of you groan and think about blowers, scrapers and school closings, the Health
and Wellness Club is thinking of skiing, riding, snowshoeing and cross-country. If you think as we do, November is a great time for visiting a local sporting goods shop for purchasing or tuning up your equipment, checking your sportappropriate clothing, planning destinations and finding ways to manage the considerable cost of skiing and snowboarding. Going directly to the website of any ski area, or getting on its mailing list, will get you cost information on season passes (commit early!) and on specially priced days. Being a member of a ski club is probably the best way of bringing down the cost of lift tickets for single days or club organized trips (and possibly getting free instruction). aturday, November 29, the day after Black Friday, is Small Business Saturday 2014. The Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce has been a partner with American Express in promoting Small Business Saturday in the Hudson Valley every year since the campaign’s inception in 2010, and we’ll continue to work with them to shine a spotlight on the places that are the cornerstones of our business community. Last year, over 1,450 neighborhoods like ours officially participated in Small Business Saturday, generating over $5.5 billion in economic impact. We hope you and your business will consider joining the movement again (or for the first time!) this year. If you want to get involved locally, visit dcrcoc.org/ shopsmall and let us know. From there, we’ll send you a promotional package and key information for how to get the most out of Small Business Saturday. To learn more about the national movement, visit ShopSmall.com. Participating in Small Business Saturday is just another great way to Think Local First. When you Think Local First,
you’re supporting a business or service provider that has a vested interest in what the Hudson Valley becomes. This helps a significantly higher percentage of the dollars you spend stay here at home. What follows is re-investment, either through other like-minded businesses, community organizations or as tax revenue for our local government that is used to keep our social services and infrastructure strong. Imagine if every time you made a purchase, you were helping a local businessman make a larger contribution to a local charity. What if every meal you ate at a restaurant was helping the family farm down the road stay in business and perhaps expand? Your dollars go farther when you Think Local First, and you’re getting much more in return, even if you can’t see it at the time. Support the Hudson Valley business community. Think Local First on Small Business Saturday and every day.
Sincerely,
Charles S. North President & CEO

The Brookmeade Community Foundation asks for the support of neighbors and local businesses to support projects that will enhance the quality of life for these residents. Projects include the creation of the Mason-MacDonald courtyard and on-site special events and family programs. The Foundation will be hosting their Third Annual Gala recognizing Robert X. Monahan and Jill Welch for their outstanding work with those suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. The night will be filled with dinner, dancing and a silent auction, all benefiting the Brookmeade Community Foundation. The gala will take place at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 15 at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel. For more information please visit www.communityatbrookmeade.com

Mentors working to fill your jobs
T
he simple statement, “I saw a help wanted sign” or “XYZ Business is hiring” is enough to clear the office at the Workforce Development Center at the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. There will be frenetic activity; program participants will be called, resumes will be printed and there may even be a last minute stop at Dress for Success or the Salvation Army to acquire that perfect jobready look. Then they are off! Mentors from Work Now, Step Up, Responsible Parent Initiative and Youth Employment Services are always ready to answer the call of “someone is hiring.” In fact most of a mentor’s day is firmly entrenched in preparing individuals for work; creating resumes, preparing for interviews and developing the necessary soft skills to keep a job once one is acquired. The Workforce Development Center works with the Temporary Assistance staff at the Department of Community and Family Services. It’s a simple process – individu-
als are referred to our mentoring programs and our goal is to help them achieve self-sufficiency. But the results are amazing. The transformation from being reliant on financial assistance to standing on your own two feet empowers our participants. Our mentees increase self-confidence, take more pride in and accept responsibility for their choices and inadvertently increase their professional development. But what is mentoring really? It’s not someone telling someone else what to do and how to live. It’s meeting an individual where they are and assisting them in their desire to move forward and reach their personal goals. W h e n asked about the success of the mentoring at programs the Chamber, Robert Allers, Commissioner of the Department of Community and Family Services said, “Everyone has heard the saying ‘success breeds success’ – the mentoring program has a history of over 70% success in helping persons get and keep a job. Many times these jobs are a person’s first foray into the field of employment. Starting a person off with a ‘success’ is the

She recently told me, “I have made a lot of personal improvements. Jessica, my mentor, has helped me stay calm through a tough situation. Now I’m working full time and I am looking forward to moving into my own apartment next month.” Help Wanted. To some people it is just a sign, to others it is a lifeline. The Corporation, which annually honors exceptional businesses of all sizes and sectors in a variety of categories, says it received a total of 52 nominations this year, the most it has collected in the award program’s 16-year history. The 2014 Business Excellence Awards honors business entities that impact the economic vitality of Dutchess County and allows for nominations in eight categories: agriculture, entrepreneur, innovation, manufacturing, newcomer, nonprofit organization, small business and tourism. A single winner is picked in each category by a
selection committee comprised of community business leaders and former Business Excellence Award recipients. A Grand Award recipient is also chosen. Businesses are selected based on a variety of criteria that includes creativity, innovation, community participation and the impact the business has made on its professional area. The Business Excellence Awards will be presented on Thursday, November 13 at 5:30 pm at The Grandview in Poughkeepsie. For over 30 years, the DCEDC’s mission has been to attract, retain, and expand for-profit and not-forprofit businesses for the benefit of Dutchess County and to maintain Dutchess County’s healthy economic diversification. The 2015 Chamber Foundation Campaign
Please consider making a gift to The 2015 Chamber Foundation Campaign. Your support of the Campaign will allow The Chamber Foundation to continue to expand its signature leadership programming and youth development initiatives, including the newly formed Student Mentorship Program. Dollars raised will also fund our remarkable scholarship program that awarded over $60,000 this past spring to deserving students and continuing education students throughout the Hudson Valley. Your support will help to ensure that we can continue to provide hope for future generations of students. All donations are fully tax deductible. Thank you for investing in our future.
